Ralph Ravell
January 23, 1999
Ralph Ravell, 84, formerly of Swiftwater, died Saturday, Jan. 23, in New York City. The European born son of German movie producer Rudolph Meinert, Ralph Ravell loved America and dreamed of immigrating here long before his plans and dreams were interrupted by the Nazis.
After escaping Hitler's Army, he aided the Allies in the Underground, transporting information to the English and later to the American Army. After being liberated by the Americans, he assisted the Occupation Army in Frankfort by building a theater from a bombed out building and producing shows to promote amicable relations between the Germans and Americans. His work for the U.S. Special Services was so highly valued and appreciated that he was awarded honorary citizenship and arrived on the shores of New York City in April 1948 as an American.
While preparing a dance act with his first partner, German born Corine, he worked as a maitre d' at Longchamps Restaurant. With the act Corine & Ravell, he performed on the remaining Vaudeville Circuit including a one night stand at a quaint country inn that had no stage, no band, no lights and had to leave without doing the show. That was Mount Airy Lodge in the Poconos, 1957.
The owners, John and Suzanne Martens, embarrassed at their leaving without performing, called with an invitation to return as their guests so they could learn what Mount Airy needed to do to have professional entertainment at their lodge.
This was the start of a more than 30 year relationship not only with Mount Airy, but with the Pocono Mountain area as a new frontier for entertainers.
Ralph Ravell brought show business to the Poconos. He put Mount Airy Lodge on the map by creating night clubs, house bands and providing new talent with a place to break in their new routines and try out their musical arrangements and acts — great talent the likes of Pat Cooper, Norm Crosby, London Lee, Pat Henry, Rodney Dangerfield, Rip Taylor, Corbit Monica, King Henry and the Showmen, and broke racial barriers with Jimmy Randolf, Melba Moore, Maurice and Gregory Hines. The list of artists that Ralph Ravell introduced on the stages of Mount Airy Lodge and later Pocono Gardens Lodge that established the prestige and notoriety that provided the impetus for their success is endless.
After Corine retired her dancing shoes, Ralph expanded his impresarial efforts with full production shows in which one of the featured dancers was Marcella, later to become his wife and partner of the celebrated dance team Marcella & Ravell.
Together they performed in the top theaters and night clubs, including Las Vegas, Lincoln Center, the Concord Resort, the Fountainbleu, the Hollywood Bowl, the London Palladium, etc., opening shows for great headliners such as Joan Rivers, Englebert Humperdink, Lisa Minelli, Joel Gray, Anthony Newley, Yul Brynner, Sammy Davis Jr., Louise O'Brien, Tony Martin and on and on.
After an accident forced Marcella off the stage, the Ravells launched their building company, Marvell Designer Homes. Designing was Ralph's avocation which turned into a successful vocation inspired by the home the Ravells built with their own hands that won accolades and awards and brought attention to their innate design talent. The theatrical stylization of the homes attracted professional and artistic clients including Italian singing star Enzo Stuarti.
They returned to the stage with a come back from 1979 to 1985 when they hung up their dancing shoes and went on to create the first interior design firm in the Poconos, Marcelle Design Inc., which brought their design talents to new heights and continues today under the direction of Marcella.
Besides Ralph's closest friend to the end, Marcella, Ralph is survived by his lovely god-daughter Aralee Dorough, whom he loved dearly and his loving and devoted friends whose lives he touched as a man with multiple talents, integrity, charity and truth. His endearing personality and gentleman-like manner was unique and not soon to be forgotten.
