Doris Bender Maxwell, M.D.

January 13,1999

Doris Bender Maxwell, M.D., died on January 13, 1999, at Westmoreland Regional Hospital, Greensburg, Pa.

She was born Doris Harriet Bender on May 8, 1920, to Norman O. and Mary Ellen Bender of Stroudsburg. In 1937, she was graduated from Stroudsburg High School. In 1941, she received a B. A. degree in Biology and Chemistry from Temple University.

She enrolled in medical school at the University of Pennsylvania and earned the M.D. degree in 1944. Her postgraduate internship was also completed at the University of Pennsylvania in 1944 and 1945. From 1945 to 1950, she was a surgical resident in Philadelphia at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and at Children's Hospital. She was the sixth woman in the United States to be board-certified in surgery.

In 1949, she was married to Dr. James Dinsmore Maxwell. They decided to establish their surgical practices in Greensburg, Pa. In 1989, she retired from surgery but continued to remain active until the day of her death in the affairs of Westmoreland Hospital.

Dr. Maxwell received several recognitions for her contributions to medicine.

She was a longstanding supporter of the Westmoreland Museum of American Art. She supported many other charitable and civic causes.

She was preceded in death in 1975 by her husband, James D. Maxwell, and in 1989 by a sister, Janet L. Bender of Stroudsburg.

She is survived by a brother, Norman O. Bender of Newport, N.C.; and by four children, Jane Bardeen Maxwell of Rockville, Md., John Bender Maxwell of Greensburg, Pa., Ellen Maxwell Durkee of Pinehurst, N.C., and Elizabeth Maxwell- Schmidt, M.D., of Annapolis, Md. She is also survived by four grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 16, at the First Presbyterian Church in Greensburg. In lieu of flowers, contributions be may be made to the Westmoreland Museum of American Art or to the Doris B. Maxwell, M.D., fund at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Suite 400, Medical Arts Building, 3708 Fifth Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15213-3405.

Joseph J. Vogt

January 9, 1999

Joseph J. Vogt, 73, of Skytop, Pa., died Saturday, January 9, at Brookmont Health Care Center. He was the husband of Stella (Yarmosh) Vogt.

He was born in Buck Hill Falls, Pa., the son of the late Charles and Mary (Smith) Vogt and graduated from Barrett High School and Palmer Business School.

Mr. Vogt worked with his Father and brother operating Vogt Plumbing and Heating. In 1970, he founded the Joseph J. Vogt Insurance Agency in Mount Pocono. He was an insurance agent and president until his retirement.

He was an active member of the Barrett Township Rotary Club where he served as past president, a Boy Scout Institution Representative, and received the Rotary Club's Paul Harris Fellowship Award. He was one of Barrett Township's first Eagle Scouts and a Boy Scout Master. He was a member of St. Bernadette's Church and the Knights of Columbus. He served on the Barrett Township Planning Commission, the Barrett Library Board, and the Barrett Historical Society. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, served as an auditor for Monroe County, and was a member of the Skytop Country Club.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Attorney James Vogt of Scottsdale, Ariz.; a daughter, Kim Sarratt of Lilburn, Ga.; two sisters , Mary Vogt and Bertha Deihl, both of Stroudsburg; four grandchildren, Renee and Susan Vogt of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Leslie and Lauren Sarratt of Lilburn, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Vogt, Jr., of Buck Hill Falls.

Funeral services will be 9:30 a.m. Monday, January 18, from the Bolock Funeral Home with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Bernadette's Church, Canadensis, Father Alfred Vito, celebrant. Interment will follow at the Moravian Cemetery in Canadensis. There will be a viewing on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Bolock Funeral Home, corner of Routes 940 and 390, Paradise Valley.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Parkinson Foundation, Presbyterian Hospital, 622 W. 168th Street, New York, N.Y., 10032.

Germain M. Ristoff

January 12, 1999

Germain M. Ristoff, 88, formerly of Tobyhanna, passed away Jan. 12, 1999, at a hospital in Colorado Springs, Colo. She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Ristoff was born Jan. 18, 1910 in Liege, Belgium to Florent and Sidonic (Danloy) Marenne. She was married in 1947 to William Ristoff, who is deceased.

She is survived by two sons , Guy M. and Thomas; a sister, Antoinette Marenne; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Private family services will be held. Inurnment will be at Memorial Gardens Mausoleum in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of giver's choice.

Hans Peter Ernesti

January 9, 1999

Hans Peter Ernesti, 62, died Saturday, January 9, in Lebanon VA Medical Center, Lebanon.

He was a long time resident of Delaware, N.J. Prior to retiring he was employed for several years by Rudolph Technologies, formerly Rudolph Research, in Flanders, N.J.

Born June 20, 1936 in Saskatchewan, Canada. He was raised in Germany, came to live in Canada in 1953, and then to the United States in 1958. He served two years in the United States Army doing his term in Germany from 1960 to 1962.

He is survived by his wife, the former Lola St-Amour; a daughter, Ann Ernesti of Virginia Beach, Va.; and a son, Daniel Ernesti of East Stroudsburg. He is also survived by three sisters : Margaret Klaus of Paxinos; Agnes Hennemann of Dorsten, Germany; Erika Schopohl of Lichtenau, Germany; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, January 23, at 10:30 a.m., in St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church, 327 Greenwich Street in Belvidere, N.J.

Memorials in his name may be sent to the American Cancer Society, 4 Opdyke's Lane, Oxford, N.J. 07863.

Niles R. Heller

Niles R. Heller, 83, died on Jan. 6, 1999 in Sun City West, Ariz.

He was born on Aug. 9, 1915, in East Stroudsburg.

He was a graduate of East Stroudsburg High School and also of East Stroudsburg College in 1937.

He was a teacher at Portland High School for three years.

He was a radar officer in the 5th fleet in the Pacific in World War II.

He was then a government employee with a Navy research lab in Washington , D.C., for 12 years.

He was an electronic engineer with NASA for 16 years. A division chief of satellite tracking and data analysis network at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., and Apollo and Gemini Programs.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy of Sun City West, Ariz.; two sisters , Ann Feltham and Dorothy Sturdevant of Stroudsburg; a daughter, Nancy Brungart of Annapolis, Md.; a son, Gary Heller of Greenbelt, Md.; and three grandchildren.

Harriet Crowning

Jan. 15, 1999

Harriet Crowning, 82, of Parsippany, N.J., died Friday, Jan. 15, at the Hillcrest Retirement Community in Jackson Township. She was the wife of the late Robert J. Crowning.

She was born in Newark, N.J; a daughter of the late Charles and Sarah (Reville) Landells. She had been a resident of Birchwood Lakes, Dingmans Ferry, Pike County, for more than 30 years. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Arema Chapter in Belleville, N.J. She was a member of the Dingmans Ferry Ambulance Corps for 12 years.

Prior to her retirement, she was employed as a secretary by the Scandia Corp. in Kearny, N.J., for more than 20 years.

She is survived by a daughter, Lorraine Chesnick of Parsippany, N.J.; a son, Robert J. Crowning Jr. of Edison, N.J.; two sisters , Lillian Gettler of Branchville, N.J, and Vera Perry of Barnaget, N.J.; a brother, Charles Landells of Totowa, N.J.; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Graveside funeral services and burial will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 19, at 10 a.m. in the East Ridgelawn Cemetery, Clifton, N.J., with the Rev. Otto Baker officiating. There will be no viewing.

The Lanterman & Allen Funeral Home, 27 Washington St., East Stroudsburg, is in charge of arrangements.

Gerald S. Byers

Jan. 16, 1999

Gerald S. Byers, 78, of Tannersville, died on Saturday, January 16, at the Mercy Hospital in Wilkes Barre. He was the husband of Mary Ann R. (Dunkleberger) Byers to whom he had been married for 44 years.

He was born in Cherry Tree, son of the late George M. and Francys (Stayer) Byers. He had been a resident of Monroe County for 30 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in World War II in Company G, 120th Infantry, 30th Division in the European Theater. He received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He was a life member of the military Order of Purple Heart — Lehigh Valley Chapter #190 and was Commander at the time of his death. He was also a life member of the Disabled American Veterans, Pocono Mountain Chapter #41. He was a member of the Mount Pocono United Methodist church. He attended Penn State University.

Prior to his retirement in 1970, he was vice president of Steel Crest Homes in King of Prussia. Upon moving to the Pocono area, he taught carpentry and wood working for 15 years at the Monroe County Area Vo-Tech night school.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Betsy Boyer of State College; three sons , William D. Byers of Tannersville, John E. Byers of Simi Valley, CA, Donald G. Reed of Pennsburg; a sister, Peggy Shipman of Sunbury; four brothers , John Byers, Gene Byers, Robert Byers and Richard Byers, all of State College; five grandsons and two great-granddaughters. He was preceded in death by a son, Robert G. Byers; a sister, Jane Buck, and a brother, William Byers.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 20 at 1 p.m. in the Lanterman & Allen Funeral Home, 27 Washington St., East Stroudsburg, with the Rev. John E. Charnock Jr. officiating.

Internment will be in the Laurelwood Cemetery, Stroudsburg. Relatives and friends may pay their respects on Wednesday from noon until the time of the services at Lanterman & Allen.

Jan. 16, 1999

Lee A. Tucker, 58, of Marshalls Creek, died on Saturday, Jan. 16, at the Pocono Medical Center in East Stroudsburg. He was the husband of Helen E. (Place) Tucker, at home.

He was born in Mitchell, Ga., a son of the late Felton and Sarah C. (Brown) Tucker. He had been a resident of Monroe County for the past 40 years and prior to that of Georgia.

Prior to his retirement due to illness, he was self-employed.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by twin daughters , Linda Tucker and Brenda Tucker, both of Thompson, Ga.; a son, Andrew Widmer of East Stroudsburg; maternal grandmother, Millie Refroe of Mitchell, Ga.; two sisters , Sarah A. Tucker of Stroudsburg and Burnestine Ofoegbu of East Stroudsburg; three brothers , Joseph Tucker of Scranton, Samuel Tucker and Douglas Tucker, both of Stroudsburg; three grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy A. Tucker, and two brothers , John Wesley Tucker and Felton L. Tucker Jr.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 20, at 11 a.m. in the Middle Smithfield Presbyterian Church, 5205 Milford Road, East Stroudsburg, with Pastor William Schram officiating.

Interment will be in the Middle Smithfield Presbyterian Cemetery. Relatives and friends may pay their respects on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of the services at the church.

The Lanterman and Allen Funeral Home, 27 Washington St., East Stroudsburg, is in charge of arrangements.

At the request of the family, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, Monroe Unit, R.R. 2 Box 2138, Stroudsburg, or the church of one's choice.

Jan. 16, 1999

Anne H. Kelley, 84, formerly of Scranton, died Saturday, Jan. 16, at Community Medical Center in Scranton. She was the wife of the late Joseph Kenneth Kelley.

She was born in Scranton, the daughter of the late Tomas and Anne (Leeds) Hartley. She graduated from Scranton Technical School.

For more than 20 years, she was employed as a medical secretary for the Radiology Department of Mercy Hospital in Scranton, retiring in 1971. Prior to that she was employed at the Scranton State Hospital.

She is survived by a son, Kenneth Kelley of San Jose, Calif.; two daughters , Phyllis Seip of Buck Hill Falls and Carole Sowers of Seal Beach, Calif.; two sisters -in-law, Betty Hartley of Scranton and Claire Calaghan of Dover, N.J.; 11 grandchildren, Anne Renee Seip of Easton, Jacob and Marcy Seip of Buck Hill Falls, Charles Jessup of Stroudsburg, Phyllis Ann Sowers, Elizabeth Sowers, John Sowers and Joseph Sowers, all of Seal Beach, Calif., Dayna Kelley of Idaho, Evette Kelley of California, Kenneth Kelley of Washington ; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Joan Jessup of Philadelphia.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Edmond Coppinger at St. Ann's Church in Tobyhanna, on Tuesday, Jan. 19, at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at St. Catherine's Cemetery in Moscow. There will be a viewing from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at the Bolock Funeral Home, corner of routes 940 and 390, Paradise Valley.
