John P. Muchnicki

January 11, 1999

John P. Muchnicki, 75, of Tobyhanna died at home Monday after an illness. He was the widower of his wife Helen Reid Muchnicki, who preceded him in death. He also leaves behind his cherished friend Donna Dailey.

Born in Archbald a son of John and Josephine Perock Muchnicki, he was employed by the General Electric Company as a machinist until his retirement in 1986. He served in the armed forces in World War II, and became active in the American Legion Post 99, located in Kearny, N.J.

He was also preceded in death by a son John, who died in 1979. He is survived by two daughters , Debra Orr of Cresco and Susan Listowski of New Jersey. He is also survived by two brothers , Edward of Florida and Robert of New Jersey; and two sisters , Florence Michallis of New Jersey and Dorothy Huyler of New Jersey.

Friends may call at the James M. Hook & Co. Funeral Directors, 35 Sterling Road, Mount Pocono on Wed. Jan. 13 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Ann Church, Tobyhanna on Thursday at 9:30 a.m. with Father Martin Boylan officiating.

Interment will follow at Pocono Lake Cemetery.

Carlyle J. Strunk Jr.

January 12, 1999

Carlyle J. "Butch" Strunk Jr., 52, of RR #5, Saylorsburg, died early Tuesday morning, January 12, in his home. He was the husband of Linda M. (Smith) Strunk, at home, with whom he had celebrated 33 years of marriage last September.

Born on December 7, 1946, in East Stroudsburg, he was a son of Carlyle J. Strunk, Sr., of Stroudsburg and Mae E. (Kresge) Decker of East Stroudsburg, and was a lifetime resident of Monroe County.

He had worked as a tool grinder for the Alstom Corporation in Easton for 32 years and was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose #1336 in Stroudsburg.

Surviving in addition to his wife and parents are a son, Scott M. Strunk and his wife, Maria, of Franklin Park, N.J.; a sister, Beverly Rode, of East Stroudsburg; three brothers , Charles Strunk of Neola, William Strunk of East Stroudsburg and Bruce Strunk of Stroudsburg; two half-brothers , George Strunk of East Stroudsburg and Kevin Strunk of Stroudsburg; a half-sister, Denise Warren of New Jersey; his mother - and Father -in-law, Marvin and Hazel Smith of Stroudsburg; two sisters -in-law, Theresa and her husband LeRoy James and Deborah and her husband Russell Silfee of Stroudsburg; and many nieces and nephews.

Friends and family are invited to attend memorial services on Friday, January 15, at 2 p.m. from the William H. Clark Funeral Home, 1003 Main Street, Stroudsburg, with the Rev. Robert B. Shrom, chaplain of Lehigh Valley Hospice, officiating. Cremation will take place at the H.G. Smith Crematory, Stroudsburg.

The family has requested that memorial contributions may be made to the Lehigh Valley Hospice, 5003 Route 611, Stroudsburg, PA 18360 or to the American Cancer Society, RR #2, Box 2138, Stroudsburg, PA 18360.

Cecelia E. Houseman

January 11, 1999

Cecelia E. Houseman, 88, of Mountainhome, died Monday, January 11, at Pocono Medical Center after a brief illness. She was the widow of William Houseman, who died on October 27, 1982. They had been married for 54 years, at the time of his death.

Born in Staten Island, N.Y., on July 1, 1910, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Jessie (Stern) Sleight. She lived in Mountainhome for the past 27 years. Prior to that, she lived in Englishtown, N.J., for 12 years.

Mrs. Houseman was a member of the Mountainhome United Methodist Church and a member of the daughters of the American Revolution. She was one of the founders of The Harvesters of Barrett Township, as well as being very active with the Senior Center in Mountainhome. While living in Englishtown, N.J., she was active with the Freehold Hospital Auxiliary.

Mrs. Houseman was known for her homemade breads, jams, and goodies, which she sold at the Mountainhome YMCA Flea Market for over 20 years. Most of all, she was a "professional grandma" to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by two daughters , Barbara Stuhl of Staten Island, N.Y., and Carol Del Nero of Mountainhome. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, Theodore Carves and his wife Ruby of Bernardston, Mass., Frank Del Nero, Jr., and his wife Lori of Mountainhome, Barbara Lynn Barger of Conway, S.C., Scott Stuhl of Newawa AFB, Japan, Kim Warner of Franklin, N.C., Lawrence Stuhl and William Stuhl of Staten Island, N.Y.; three step-grandchildren, Robert Del Nero of Tempe, Ariz., Carolyn McKeown of Colonia, N.J., and Jimmy Del Nero of Union, N.J.; five great-grandchildren, Jennifer Stuhl of Conway, S.C., Jason Cretacci of Franklin, N.C., Maegan, Jennifer and Jessica Carves of Bernardston, Mass.; and six step-great-grandchildren, Nicholas and Roxanne Del Nero of Tempe, Ariz., Jason and Christy Del Nero of Union, N.J., and Theodore and Michael McKeown of Colonia, N.J.

Visitation will be held at the Bolock Funeral Home, Corner of Routes 940 and 390, Paradise Valley, from 10 to 11 a.m. on Thursday, January 14, with a service to be held immediately following with Rev. Elaine Barnes officiating. Interment will be in Oakland Cemetery, Mountainhome.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Barrett Volunteer Ambulance Corps, P. O. Box 105, Cresco, PA 18326 or to the charity of your choice.

January 12, 1999

William C. Fish, 78, of Stroudsburg, died on Tuesday, January 12, at the Brookmont Health Care Center in Chestnuthill Township. He was the husband of the late D. Catherine (Akers) Fish who died in 1997.

He was born in East Stroudsburg and was the son of the late Charles and Adeline (McDonald) Fish. He had been a resident of Monroe County his lifetime. He was a member of the East Stroudsburg United Methodist Church.

Prior to his retirement, he was a co-owner with Bill Huffman of Metal Air in Marshalls Creek for 12 years. Prior to that, he was employed as a sheet metal worker for Ed Katz.

He was an avid gardener, having many beautiful rose gardens at his home. He was also an avid hunter and fisherman. He was also a member of the Moose Lodge in Stroudsburg.

He is survived by a daughter, Barbara E., wife of William E. Custard of Stroudsburg; a son, Ronald W., husband of Lucille L. Fish of Stroudsburg; a sister, Dolores Clark of Freemansberg, Pa.; a brother, Paul Fish of Beaver Valley, Pa.; 5 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 14, at 1:30 p.m. in the Lanterman & Allen Funeral Home, 27 Washington Street, East Stroudsburg, with the Rev. Raymond Poortstra officiating.

Interment will be in the Delaware Water Gap Cemetery, Delaware Water Gap. Relatives and friends may pay their respects on Thursday from 12:30 p.m. until the time of the services at Lanterman & Allen.

January 12, 1999

Mary L. Tompkins, 80, of Bushkill, died Tuesday, January 12, in Stroud Manor Nursing Home, East Stroudsburg. She was the wife of the late Wilbur F. Tompkins.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Herman and Caroline (Sturken) Machold. She was a resident of Pike County for the past three years. Prior to that, she resided in Bayshore, N.Y.

She was employed as a school aide for the New York City Board of Education for over 30 years until her retirement.

She is survived by three sons , George K. Tompkins and Patrick Tompkins, both of Levittown, N.Y., and William T. Tompkins of Bayshore, N.Y.; two daughters , Maryann Mansfield of Bushkill and Barbara J. Place of New Hyde Park, N.Y.;three sisters , Minnie Praher of Williston Park, N.Y., Caroline Bohmfeld of Elmore, N.Y., Mildred Damiani of Ocala, Fla.; one brother, Herman Machold of Woodlawn, N.Y.; 9 grandchildren; and 1 great-granddaughter.

Family and friends may pay their respects on Wednesday, January 13, from 2 to 5 p.m. and from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Lanterman & Allen Funeral Home, 27 Washington Street, East Stroudsburg.

Interment will take place in the Calverton National Cemetery in Calverton, N.Y., on Friday, January 15.

Joseph J. Vogt

January 9, 1999

Joseph J. Vogt, 73, of Skytop, Pa., died Saturday, January 9, at Brookmont Health Care Center. He was the husband of Stella (Yarmosh) Vogt.

He was born in Buck Hill Falls, Pa., the son of the late Charles and Mary (Smith) Vogt and graduated from Barrett High School and Palmer Business School.

Mr. Vogt worked with his Father and brother operating Vogt Plumbing and Heating. In 1970, he founded the Joseph J. Vogt Insurance Agency in Mount Pocono. He was an insurance agent and president until his retirement.

He was an active member of the Barrett Township Rotary Club where he served as past president, a Boy Scout Institution Representative, and received the Rotary Club's Paul Harris Fellowship Award. He was one of Barrett Township's first Eagle Scouts and a Boy Scout Master. He was a member of St. Bernadette's Church and the Knights of Columbus. He served on the Barrett Township Planning Commission, the Barrett Library Board, and the Barrett Historical Society. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, served as an auditor for Monroe County, and was a member of the Skytop Country Club.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Attorney James Vogt of Scottsdale, Ariz.; a daughter, Kim Surratt of Lilburn, Ga.; two sisters , Mary Vogt and Bertha Deihl, both of Stroudsburg; four grandchildren, Renee and Susan Vogt of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Leslie and Lauren Surratt of Lilburn, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Vogt, Jr., of Buck Hill Falls.

Funeral services will be 9:30 a.m. Saturday, January 16, from the Bolock Funeral Home with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Bernadette's Church, Canadensis, Father Alfred Vito, celebrant. Interment will follow at the Moravian Cemetery in Canadensis. There will be a viewing on Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Bolock Funeral Home, corner of Routes 940 and 390, Paradise Valley.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Parkinson Foundation, Presbyterian Hospital, 622 W. 168th Street, New York, N.Y., 10032.

January 12, 1999

Paul W. Cossman, 73 years of age, of 3512 51st Avenue, Drive West, Bradenton, Florida, formerly of Jim Thorpe, died Tuesday at the Blake Hospital in Bradenton, Florida. He was the husband of Rose M. (Cerchiaro) Cossman. They observed their 51st wedding anniversary on June 29th.

Paul was a new car dealer for 17 years at the C & D Motors Garage in Jim Thorpe. He later was employed by the Monroe County Vocational School in Bartonsville for 19 years as an instructor, prior to retiring.

Born in East Mauch Chunk, he was a son of the late William and Ida (Marie) Cossman. He was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Bradenton, Fla. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. He served 31 years as a director of the Lehigh Valley AAA Motor Club. He served as a Past Exalted Ruler of the Lehighton Elks Lodge #1284. He also was a member of the Kirby Stewart American Legion Post in Bradenton, Fla.

Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons , John of Scottsdale, Ariz., and William of Emmaus; a daughter Paula, wife of Ronald Cardullo, of Mt. Laurel, N.J.; and 6 grandchildren.

A Memorial Mass will be held at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Bradenton, Fla. Interment will be in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery in Jim Thorpe at a future date.

Funeral services for William C. Fish have been rescheduled because of inclement weather. Services will be held today at the Lanterman & Allen Funeral Home, 27 Washington St., East Stroudsburg. Visitation will begin at 12:30 p.m. and continue until the time of services at 1:30 p.m.

Elizabeth B. Brader

January 13, 1999

Elizabeth B. "Betty" Brader, 79, Tannersville, died on Wednesday evening at Brookmont Health Care Center. She was the wife of the late Charles A. Brader, who died in 1995. The couple was married for 49 years.

Born in Woburn, Mass., she was the daughter of the late Fred and Ethel (Bell) Hill. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Scotrun.

She was a graduate of Choate Hospital School of Nursing. She served in England as an Army Nurse during World War II. She worked as a registered nurse at Pocono Hospital and for Dr. E. T. Horn, Jr., in Tannersville. She served as the "Tannersville Neighborhood Nurse" ministering to friends in her community. She also worked as the assistant Postmaster in Tannersville before retiring in 1984.

She was a longtime member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church where she sang in the choir and was a communion steward.

She was a very active member of the Girl Scouts of America. She was a member of Scranton Pocono Girl Scout Council, the Tannersville Cookie Chairman, served on the Board of Directors, was the Executive Secretary, the Neighborhood Team Service Coordinator, and a troop leader. She was the recipient of the Religious Lamb Award which was presented by the Scranton Pocono Council.

She was also a member of the American Red Cross and was involved with many blood drives, the Pocono Township Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary, and the Elsie Longacre Rebekah Lodge.

She is survived by two daughters , Nancy Lewis, wife of William Lewis, of Canadensis and Patricia J. Michael, wife of Rodney Michael, of Tannersville; two sisters , Dorothy Hill of Tannersville and Jean Rogers of Scotrun; two granddaughters, Julie Bree and Britney Lewis; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Brent Brader Lewis, who died in 1990.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, January 16, at 1 p.m. from the Thomas Funeral Home, 401 North Fifth Street, Stroudsburg, with the Rev. Martin Acker officiating.

There will be a viewing on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial donations should be made to the Monroe County Campership Fund, Scranton Pocono Girl Scouts Council, 333 Madison Avenue, Scranton, PA 18510 or St. John's Lutheran Church, Scotrun, PA 18355.
