Miriam Cathey Chant

December 20, 1998

Miriam Cathey Chant, known by her many friends as "Mims", passed away at her Milford home on December 20, 1998.

Mims was born in Gastonia, North Carolina on September 20, 1908, the daughter of Fredrick Alexander Cathey and Myrtle Davis Cathey, and had been a resident of the Milford and Twin Lakes area for almost 70 years.

She was predeceased by a son, Gerald Fredrick Porter in 1972, and her husband, B. Ryall Chant in 1994.

She is survived by a son, Davis Ryan Chant of Milford; two granddaughters, Holley Chant Hunter of Los Angeles, Calif., and Tamara Chant Saltzman; and two great grandchildren: Hannah Ryall Saltzman and Jacob Colin Saltzman of Paris, France.

Mims was an active member in community service in the Tri State area for over 60 years, with particular interest in the Milford Garden Club and the Antiques Study Club.

Her business career started in the mid-1930s as a real estate appraiser in New York City for the Federal Home Loan Bank and in later years, as an office manager for B. Ryall Chant Associates here in Pike County.

Family and friends delighted in the occasions when Mims would share the happenings of her life, whether it be detailed recollections of stories told to her by Mrs. Rosalie Abbott, a survivor of the sinking of the Titanic who lived with Mims' family for a year after this major ocean disaster, or the stories about New York City during the depression including a very polite gentleman who sold pencils on the corner near Mims' office and at the end of the day, walked around the corner to be picked up by a chauffeur and limousine, or the very colorful description of the glamorous social life that was enjoyed during the summers in the 1930s in the Milford area and Tri State area.

The death of this classy lady truly marks the passing of one of the last members of the Old Guard of our area.

Memorials in the memory of Mims Chant can be sent to the Milford Garden Club, P.O. Box 764, Milford, PA, or the Milford Square Enhancement Committee of the Milford Community House, c/o Arthur Ridley, Esq., 221 Broad Street, Milford, PA 18337.
