LaVern E. Staples, 80, of Stroud Township, died on Sunday, Dec. 13, in Pocono Medical Center, East Stroudsburg. He was the husband of the late Helen (Slater) Staples.
Born in East Stroudsburg, he was a son of the late Clarence and Anna (Cobb) Staples. He was a lifelong resident of Monroe County.
He was employed as a welder for Patterson Kelley in East Stroudsburg, working for 25 years before retiring in 1978. His prior employments included working as a stock holder and working for the King Ribbon Mill in East Stroudsburg for 15 years.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps, serving as a sergeant during World War II.
Memberships include the J. Simpson Africa Lodge 628 in Stroudsburg, where he was a 32nd degree mason; the Consistory in Scranton; the Veterans of Foreign Wars in East Stroudsburg; the Eagles Lodge in Stroudsburg and the George N. Kemp American Legion Post 346 in East Stroudsburg.
He is survived by a son, Robert L. Staples of East Stroudsburg; two brothers , Louis Staples of East Stroudsburg and Ernest Staples of Pen Argyl; four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; several nieces and a nephew.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Dec. 19, at 11 a.m. in the Lanterman & Allen Funeral Home with the Rev. Raymond Poortstra officiating.
There will be a viewing from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 18, in the funeral home.
Committal will take place in Prospect Cemetery, East Stroudsburg, with the Rev. Raymond Poortstra officiating.

Clarence W. "Nipper" Stettler
December 12, 1998
Clarence W. "Nipper" Stettler, 79, of East Stroudsburg died on Saturday at Pocono Medical Center in East Stroudsburg. He was the husband of Geraldine F. (Hardy) Stettler at home.
Born in Pocono Township, he was a son of the late Edwin and Cora (Brown) Stettler and was a lifetime resident of Monroe County.
He worked as a galvanizer for McGraw Edison in East Stroudsburg for 29 years before retiring in 1982.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, serving during World War II, and was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles 1106 in Stroudsburg.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters , Patricia A. Fenstermacher of McMichaels and Kathryn Lloyd of Holts Summit, Mo.; a brother, Elwood Stettler of Tannersville; seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
There will be no calling hours. A private family service will be held at the convenience of the family in the William H. Clark Funeral Home with the Rev. David Humphrey officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial contributions be made to the American Lung Association, 302 N. Main Avenue, P.O. Box 115, Scranton, PA 18504.

Charles L. Kates Jr.
December 11, 1998
Charles L. Kates Jr. of Pocono Pines died on Friday, Dec. 11, 1998 in the Pocono Medical Center after an illness. He is survived by his widow Helen Burns Kates.
Born in Philadelphia, son of the late Charles L. Sr. and Elsie Keen Kates, he resided in the Philadelphia area until his retirement from the Philadelphia Electric Co. of Philadelphia.
He served in the Army Air Corps in World War II and was very active and held the rank of past Captain in The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. He was also a member of the Melita Lodge #259 F&AM Philadelphia and a member of Mary Commandery #36 Knights Templar. He was also Past Commodore of The Lake Niomia Duster Fleet.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons , John of Cave Creek, Ariz., and Boyd Taylor of Scottsdale, Ariz. He was also preceded in death by a son Charles L. III who passed away in 1972. Also surviving are two daughters , Joan Merritt of Douglasville, and Jeanne Anderson of Blairstown, N.J. Also one sister Dorothea Molony of Boca Ratan, Fla.; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the James M. Hook & Co. Funeral Directors, on Tuesday, Dec. 15 from 6 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. at the funeral home with Father Edward Sykes of the Trinity Episcopal Church officiating. Interment to follow in the Laurel Hill Cemetery, Philadelphia.

Emelia Scavone, 98, of Kresgeville, formerly of Keansburg, N.J., died Monday, December 14, 1998 at the Brookmont Health Care Center in Effort.
She was the wife of the late Salvatore Scavone who died in 1966.
Born in New York City, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Antonio and Giovannina (Montefuco) Bernero.
She was a member of Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Gilbert. She as also a member of the West End Senior Citizens of Brodheadsville.
She is survived by a daughter, Lorraine, wife of Charles Free of Kresgeville, with whom she resided; and two grandsons, Richard Free of Kresgeville and Michael and his wife Beverly (Burnside) Free of Dalton.
Funeral services will begin 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the Donald N. Gower Funeral Home, Inc., Route 209, Gilbert, followed by a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Gilbert, with the Rev. Father William McCawley and Rev. Father Arthur DeMaio celebrants.
Interment will be in the Middlecreek Cemetery, Kresgeville. Viewing will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Roy A. Vealey

Roy A. Vealey, 65, of Weeki Wachee, Fla., formerly of Sciota, died October 31, at the home of his daughter in Brooksville.
Born in Franklin, Mr. Vealey was a career naval officer with a total of twenty years of active duty and ten years of reserve time. He was an aircraft structural radiographer and retired from the reserves in 1981 with the rank of chief petty officer.
Mr. Vealey was the son of the late Percy A. and Dorothy Shauger Vealey. He was a graduate of Franklin High School and had retired in 1990 as a truck driver for Casey Paving and Landscaping in Tannersville. He resided in Ogdensburg and Franklin following his Navy service and moved to Sciota in 1989 and to Florida in 1995.
He was predeceased by his wife, Patricia in 1986, by a brother, Leon in 1994 and a sister, Gloria Wesolowski in 1997.
Mr. Vealey is survived by four daughters : Donna Cochrane of Brooksville, Susan Van Horn of Unionville, N.Y.; Valerie Vealey of Randolph and Marianne Van Horn of Huguenot, N.Y.; two brothers , Paul of Supply, N.C., and Floyd of Mansfield, Ohio; a sister, Janet Wottle of N.Canton, Ohio; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Private cremation was held in Florida.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, Dec. 17 at 8 p.m. at the Goble Funeral Home, 22 Main Street, Sparta, N.J., with visiting hours for one hour prior to the service. A private committal service will be held Friday at North Hardyston Cemetery, Hardyston Township, N.J.

Paul O. Shuman, 77, of Ackermanville Road, Washington Township, died Wednesday afternoon, December 16th in Easton Hospital, where he was a patient since December 1st..
He was the husband of Evelyn O. (Brown) Shuman, who died on September 24, 1984.
Born July 24, 1921 in Washington Township, he was a son of the late Roy J. and Mary E. (Brinker) Shuman.
A farmer, he owned and operated a Dairy Farm, for 43 years, retiring in 1990.
Mr. Shuman was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Plainfield Township. Also a member of the Blue Mountain Gas and Steam Engine Association, Jacktown.
He is survived by a daughter, Lios G. Shuman of Washington Township; two sons , Alfred "Butch" P. Shuman of Washington Township, and Bruce A Shuman of Saylorsburg; a brother, Walter V. Shuman of Flicksville; four sisters : Gladys E. Burden and Mae B. Frable, both of Saylorsburg; Fae P. Randall of Washington Township; and Ruth M. Achenbach of Plainfield Township; four grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
She is preceded in death by two brothers , Floyd Shuman and James Shuman and a sister, Beulah Sanders.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday from The Hough Home for Funerals, Inc., 207 Market Street, Bangor. Interment will be in Plainfield Cemetery, Plainfield Township. Friends may call Friday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Marilyn E. Adams, 59, of Bartonsville, died on Tuesday, December 15, at her home. She was the wife of the late James E. Adams Jr., who died in 1979.
She was born in East Stroudsburg, a daughter of the late John and Evelyn (Lebar) Fox. She had been a resident of Monroe County her lifetime.
She was employed as a clerk at the Salvation Army Thrift Store in East Stroudsburg and prior to that she was employed by the former LeAnna Woodcraft in Stroudsburg.
She is survived by a daughter, Theresa A. Lambert of Bartonsville; two sons , James E. Adams IV of Tannersville, and John J. Adams of Bushkill; five sisters : Dolores Faulstick of Saylorsburg; Joyce Hallet of Stewartsville, N.J.; Johanne Trayes of Lincolnton, N.C.; Carolyn Klinger of East Stroudsburg; and Connie Newby of Cresco; a brother, John Fox of Kunkletown; five grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Barbara Counterman.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 18 at 11 a.m. in the Lanterman & Allen Funeral Home, with the Rev. Raymond Poortstra officiating.
Cremation will take place in the Arlington Crematory, White hall Township. Interment will be at a later date in the Sand Hill Cemetery, Shoemakers. Relatives and friends may pay their respects on Friday from 10 a.m. to the time of the services at the funeral home.

Christian Tyler Bird, infant son of Walter W. Bird and Trisha Gunderman of Stroudsburg, died on Saturday, December 12, at University of PA Hospital in Philadelphia.
He is also survived by grandparents: Eileen Ehrman of Stroudsburg; John Gunderman of Blakeslee; and Catherine and Edward Wilkey of East Stroudsburg.
Graveside funeral services and burial will be held on Tuesday, December 15 at 10:30 a.m. at the Stroudsburg Cemetery with Rev. Raymond Poortstra officiating.

Suzanne B. Cornine, 51, of Effort, and formerly of New Jersey, died Sunday in the Pocono Medical Center, East Stroudsburg.
Born in Morristown, N.J., she was a daughter of the late Harry and Frances M. (Shadwell) Barker.
She was a graduate of Morristown High School and she had attended Brookdale Community College in Monmouth County, N.J. She had resided in Morristown, Highlands, and Mountain Lakes, N.J., before moving to Pennsylvania in 1990.
She had done volunteer work at King James Nursing Home in Atlantic City, N.J., and she was an Emergency Medical Technician with the West End Ambulance in Effort, for 8 years.
She was an avid supporter of Animal Rights and a staunch proponent of Judicial Environmental Management.
She was of the Catholic faith.
She is survived by a brother, Donnell Barker of Boonton, N.J. and a companion, John P. Lynch of Effort, with whom she resided.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday from Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Gilbert, with the Rev. William McCawley as celebrant. A viewing will be held on Friday from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. from the Kresge Funeral Home, .
