Marjorie Cleaves Sills
December 2, 1998
December 2nd marked the passing of former East Stroudsburg resident Marjorie Sills, beloved wife and mother and special friend. Her special gift was to savor life, to enjoy each and every day, a gift that was echoed in the lives of those she touched. Margie loved and enjoyed her numerous friends and family, and was always ready to offer a helping hand. Though legally blind for more than twenty years and physically limited for the past two, she continued to participate in many of the activities available at Suncoast Manor. Although it was very difficult for her, she was happy that she was able to knit several hundred patches for the lap robes used by the residents of the Health Center.
Born in Altoona, May 13, 1918, Margie was the daughter of Benjamin F. and Mabel D. Cleaves. She graduated from Altoona High School, was awarded her bachelor's degree from Bucknell University, a master's degree from Marywood University and a teaching certification from East Stroudsburg University. Following her graduation from Bucknell she took a position in the advertising department of the William F. Gable Department Store in Altoona.
In 1940 she married Frank D. Sills and moved to Lancaster. In 1943 their daughter was born and for the duration of World War II Marjorie was kept busy "following" her husband who was in the United States Navy and taking care of her daughter. After the war (1946) the family moved to Iowa City, where her husband worked on his Ph.D. A son arrived in 1947, and a year later Marjorie took a position as secretary to the Dean of the Engineering School at the University of Iowa. In addition to her secretarial work, she typed and proofed numerous theses, dissertations, and text books.
When her husband accepted an invitation to join the University of Iowa Faculty, Marjorie soon accepted the position of continuity director for radio station KXIC, Iowa City. A position she filled until the family moved to East Stroudsburg in 1959, when her husband joined the faculty of East Stroudsburg University as a professor and administrator.
Marjorie's lifelong interest in education was influential in her acceptance of a position in the Business Education Department of the Pocono Mountain School District. In addition to her teaching, Marjorie was a licensed real estate agent, and the accountant for Planned Parenthood of Monroe County. She gave freely of her time as a volunteer to Child Welfare, Girl Scouts, American Cancer Society, and the American Heart Association. She served as a member and officer of a number of professional organizations including AAW, DAR, University Club, and the East Stroudsburg University. During the thirty years Marjorie lived in the East Stroudsburg area she was active with the Episcopal Church Women and the Altar Guild of Christ Episcopal Church.
Marjorie enjoyed horseback riding, ice skating, bridge, and many other recreational sports and activities. She traveled extensively with her husband throughout Europe, Asia, Africa and the Southwest Pacific. Marjorie and her husband moved to Avon Park, Fla., in 1988 and to their present residence at Suncoast Manor, 6909 Ninth Street, S. #430, Saint Petersburg, Fla, 33705 in 1991.
She is survived by her husband Frank, daughter, Angelyn of Tinian, M.P. CNMI, and son, Dr. F. Eric Sills of Douglassville; and three grandsons. A Requiem Mass Memorial service will be held at St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church on Wednesday, December 9 at 11 a.m.
