Carleene L. Soter

December 1, 1998

Carleene L. (Nanny) Manfra Soter, 72, of Albrightsville, passed away in the presence of her loving family on Tuesday, Dec. 1, in Salisbury Township.

Born in Jacksonville, Fla., she was the devoted wife of husband Stanley Z. Soter. She was the daughter of the late Otis and Ruth Gotto.

She had lived in the Albrightsville/Snydersville area for the past 40 years. She was a homemaker all her life and was of the Presbyterian faith.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons , Howard T. Manfra of Hackettstown, N.J., and Michael W. Manfra Sr. of Washington , N.J.; a daughter, Betty Ann, wife of Ted (Brooklyn) Stevens of Stroudsburg.

She is also survived by a step son Stanley J. Soter of Clarks Summit; a step daughter, Mary Alice Lutz of Scranton; a son-in-law Douglas Hunter of Bucks Township; two sisters , Betty Starkey of Indiana, and Ann Breeden of Mt. Juliet, Tenn.; a brother, Wayne Gotto of Nashville, Tenn.; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a daughter Janice E. Hunter of Bucks Township, who died on Dec. 2, 1994.

When Carleene was not spending time with her best friend and husband Stanley, she was enjoying a good game of bingo.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, Dec. 4 at 11 a.m. from the Joseph J. Pula Funeral Home, with the Rev. Carol S. Brown officiating. Burial will be in the Stroudsburg Cemetery.

Visitation will be on Thursday, Dec. 3, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial donations can be made to the Monroe County Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 144, Stroudsburg, PA 18360, or the Hospice St. John, 1007 Oak Street, Pittston, PA 18640.

November 30, 1998

Ann Marie Smith, 50, of Tobyhanna, died November 30 at Moses Taylor Hospital in Scranton. She was the wife of Kenneth M. Smith Jr.

Born in Oceanside, Long Island, N.Y., she was the daughter of Ann M. Briggs of North Merrick, N.Y., and the late Edward F. Briggs. She grew up in Freeport, L.I., and graduated from Roosevelt Senior High School in Roosevelt, L.I. She attended Nassau Community College, and graduated from Mrs. Skinner's Secretarial School, where she later taught.

She was employed as a supervisor at K-Mart in Mount Pocono.

She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Mount Pocono; a member and past president of the Coolbaugh Township Ladies Auxiliary; a former Girl Scout Leader; and served as an elected auditor for Coolbaugh Township.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters , Ann Marie Smith and Dorothy Margaret Smith, both at home; and a brother, Edward F. Briggs Jr., of North Merrick, N.Y.

Father Joseph DeAcetis will conduct a funeral service at 10 a.m. on Thursday, December 3 at Trinity Episcopal Church, Trinity Hill Road in Mount Pocono. Interment will follow at Prospect Cemetery, Exit 51 (I-80), East Stroudsburg. There will be a viewing on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Bolock Funeral Home, Corner of Routes 940 and 390 in Mount Pocono.

Memorial donations may be made to the Coolbaugh Township Fire Company, Laurel Drive, Tobyhanna, PA 18466, or the Coolbaugh Township Volunteer Ambulance Association, 3040 Memorial Boulevard, Tobyhanna, PA 18466.

Nov. 27, 1998

Florence S. "Flo" Ceccarelli, 83, of Lexington, Ky., wife of Renato T. "Chic" Ceccarelli died Friday afternoon in the emergency room of Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington, Ky.

She was born in Reeders, daughter of the late John and Della (Snyder) Siptroth. She was past president of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 313 in Lexington, Ky.

Other survivors are a brother, Claude H. Siptroth; a sister Ann Butts; and several nieces, nephews and cousins, all of East Stroudsburg.

Funeral services will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the W.R. Milward Mortuary Southland in Lexington, Ky., conducted by the Rev. Stuart Turner. Burial will be in the Lexington Cemetery.

Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

Helen C. Sandt, 81, of Jackson Township, died on Friday, Nov. 27, 1998, in Pocono Medical Center, East Stroudsburg. She was the wife of the late Jackson H. Sandt.

Born in Minisink Hills, a daughter of the late Luther and Jennie Smith. She was a life-long resident of Monroe County.

A graduate of East Stroudsburg High School, she and her husband were the prior owners of the former Chatter Box Restaurant (now Shorty's) in East Stroudsburg for 25 years. Her prior employment was for the former Security Bank (now Mellon Bank) in East Stroudsburg as a teller for many years. She was a member of the Thomas P. Lambert Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2540 in Stroud Township.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 2, at 1:30 p.m. in the Lanterman & Allen Funeral Home, 27 Washington St., East Stroudsburg, with the Rev. Raymond Poortstra officiating.

There will be a viewing on Wednesday from 12:30 p.m. until the time of service in Lanterman & Allen.

Committal will take place in Stroudsburg Cemetery, Stroudsburg.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the United Way of Monroe County, P.O. Box 153, Tannersville, PA 18372.

November 12, 1998

Mildred S. Williams VanWhy, 92, of Stroudsburg, died Thursday night at Pleasant Valley Manor, Hamilton Township. She was the wife of the late Arthur L. Williams and the late Chester VanWhy.

Born on May 28, 1906 in Shawnee, she was the daughter of the late Daniel and Anna Elizabeth (Trach) Dingman and had lived in the area all of her life. She was a self employed seamstress, also working at the Shirt Waist Factory in East Stroudsburg and ART Metal in East Stroudsburg as an assembler.

She was a Methodist. She was a member of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union and a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

She is survived by two daughters , Betty P. Williams and Alberta J. Fisher, both of Stroudsburg; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, A. Lewis Williams in 1993.

Funeral services will be held on Monday at 11 a.m. in the William H. Clark Funeral Home, 1003 Main Street, Stroudsburg, with the Rev. Joseph W. Barth officiating. Burial will follow in the Stroudsburg Cemetery.

There will be a viewing on Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home.

November 26, 1998

Barbara J. Burnett Katz, 69, of Stroudsburg, died Wednesday evening in the Lehigh Valley Hospital Hospice Unit, Allentown. She was the wife of the Sidney Katz, at home.

Born on May 16, 1929 in Allentown, she was the daughter of the late Carl and Viola (Zellner) Remmel and had lived in the area for the past 50 years. She had worked in the garment industry, retiring 20 years ago, and was a member of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Patricia G. Franks of White hall; a son, Lawrence Burnett of Allentown; granddaughter, Kellie Lynn of Exton; two step grandsons, Anthony Smyth and Harvey Smyth, both of Stroudsburg; a sister, Jean Chemello of Bath and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Edward L. Burnett in 1978.

Funeral services will be held on Monday at 10:30 a.m. in the William H. Clark Funeral Home, 1003 Main Street, Stroudsburg, with the Rev. Ann G. Huey and Rabbi Sheldon Davis officiating. Burial will follow in the Laurelwood Cemetery, Stroudsburg.

There will be a viewing on Sunday from 7-8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Lehigh Valley Hospice, 2166 South 12th Street, Allentown, 18103-9845.

November 27, 1998

Thelma M. Field, 83, of Hamilton Township died Friday Nov. 27 in Laurel Manor, Stroudsburg. She was the wife of Robert H. Field, at home. They were married on Feb. 18, 1933.

Born in Hamilton Township, she was a daughter of the late Richard S. and Myrtle E. (Hartman) Metzgar. She was a lifelong resident of Monroe County.

She was employed by Pocono Medical Center in East Stroudsburg as a nurse's aide for 13 years, retiring in 1981. Her former employment was with NuMaid Hosiery Mill, where she worked as a topper for nine years. She also wrote Bartonsville news for the former Daily Record.

She was a member of the Christ Hamilton United Lutheran Church, Hamilton Square, and the Daughter of the American Revolution. She was formerly a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Bartonsville, where she taught Sunday School for more than 30 years, and was secretary of the church's board for 25 years.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by three sons , Robert W. Field of Bartonsville Richard T. Field of Allentown and John E. Field of Hamilton Square; a sister, Kathryn Horvatin of Forest City; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Private graveside funeral and committal services will be held Monday in St. John's Cemetery in Bartonsville with the Rev. Ralph A. Boyer and Rev. James Griel officiating. There will be no viewing.

Arrangements are by the Lanterman & Allen Funeral Home, 27 Washington St., East Stroudsburg, Pa. 18301.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church, 7005 N. Easton Belmont Pike, Stroudsburg, Pa. 18360 or to Christ Hamilton United Lutheran Church, R.D. 4 Box 4293, Stroudsburg.
