William Hamilton Jarvis

October 13, 1998

William Hamilton Jarvis, 65, of Tobyhanna, died Tuesday at home.

He is survived by his wife, Jacqueline C. Jarvis.

He was born in Chesapeake, Va., the son of the late Gideon and Arizona Jarvis. He was a graduate of Princess Anne City Training School, Virginia Beach, and Central State University, Wilberforce, Ohio. He was a member of Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity.

He was a U.S. Army Retired Lt. Colonel and an entrepreneur. He twice received the Bronze Star and Meritorious Service Medals.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by William H. and Janice Jarvis of Dallas, Tx.; Robert and Lori Jarvis of Thornhurst; two daughters , Cleopatra Jarvis of Kansas City, Mo., and Sonia Jarvis of Washington , D.C.; four brothers , Gideon Jarvis of Long Island, N.Y.; Gene Jarvis of Virginia Beach, Va.; Wilbert Jarvis and Lafayette Smith of Chesapeake, Va.; a sister, Doris Jarvis Cuffee of Virginia Beach, Va.; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Javier Lovelace.

Funeral services will be conducted by Rev. Linda Prince of Lake Hopatcong United Methodist Church on Thursday at 1 p.m. at the Bolock Funeral Home, corner of routes 940 and 390 in Mount Pocono. Friends may call from noon until the time of service. Interment will take place at 2 p.m. Friday at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Fort Indiantown Gap.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Memorial Sloan-Kettering, New York, N.Y.

October 11, 1998

Oberton "Olden" Hill, a/k/a Elliott, 56, of Paradise Township, died on Sunday, October 11, 1998 in his home.

Born in Georgia, he resided in Monroe County for more than 15 years.

He was employed as a cook for Strickland Resort in Paradise Township for 15 years.

Graveside funeral services will be held on Monday, October 19, 1998 at 2:30 p.m. in Stroudsburg Cemetery, Stroudsburg, with the Rev. Edward Kimes officiating.

There will be no viewing.

October 14, 1998

Lawrence Douglas Hardy, 72, of Cresco, died Wednesday, October 14. He was preceded in death by his wife Catherine and his son Michael Hardy.

He is survived by three sons , Jake, Cliff and Doug Hardy; a daughter, Margaret Ann Yoder; fifteen grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be private.

Memorial donations may be made to the David Skae Cancer Fund, RR#3, Box 6, Cresco, PA 18326.

Earl R. Thomas Jr.

October 16, 1998

Earl R. Thomas Jr., 77, of Canadensis, died Friday morning in his home. He was the husband of Marjorie (Heller) Thomas with whom he had celebrated 51 years of marriage.

Born on November 4, 1920 at the Overlook in Canadensis, he was a son of the late Earl R., Sr. and Elizabeth E. (Besecker) Thomas and was a lifetime resident of the area.

A United States Navy veteran of World War II, he was employed by Skytop Lodge for nearly 50 years and was a former Justice of the Peace in Barrett Township.

He was a former member of the Barrett Township Lions Club and the Evans-Blitz Post 922 American Legion in Canadensis.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Gloria Thomas Wilhelm; a grandson, William D. Neith, Jr.; a great-granddaughter, Grace Elizabeth Neith; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, John S. Thomas and a sister, Gloria Thomas.

Funeral services will be held at 12 noon Monday from the William H. Clark Funeral Home, 1003 Main Street, Stroudsburg, with the Rev. Gwyned Williams, pastor of the Newfoundland Moravian Church, officiating. Burial will follow in the Hopedale Moravian Cemetery, Newfoundland.

There will be a viewing on Monday from 11 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers the family requested that memorial donations may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Wilfred Vergara

October 14, 1998

Wilfred Vergara, 49, of Canadensis, died Wednesday, Oct. 14 at his home. He was the husband of Loretta (Laura) Vergara to whom he was married for 21 years.

He was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, the son of Maria (Roman) Vergara of Puerto Rico and the late Viriglio Vergara. He was a resident of Canadensis for the past 9 years and prior to that he lived in the Brooklyn, N.Y. area. He was employed as a steam fitter with the Metal Traders Union Local #638 of New York for 10 years from 1970 until 1980. He was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War and was a life member of Disabled Veterans of America.

He was a member of St. Bernadettes Roman Catholic Church of Canadensis.

In addition to his wife Loretta, he is survived by four sons : Frederick J. Vergara, Thomas J. Vergara, Anthony M. Vergara, and Alexander F. Vergara, all at home; a brother Robert Vergara of Palm Beach, Fla.; a sister, Norma Lopez of Puerto Rico; and several nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, Oct. 20 at 9 a.m. from St. Bernadettes Roman Catholic Church of Canadensis with the Rev. Father Alfred J. Vito as celebrant. Burial will be in the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery in Annville.

Visitation will be on Monday, Oct. 19 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Joseph J. Pula Funeral Home, .

Janet M. Cohen

October 15, 1998

Janet M. Cohen, 59, of Saylorsburg, died Thursday in the Palmerton Hospital.

She was the wife of the late Robert S. Cohen.

Born in Newark, N.J., she was the daughter of the late Frederick and Anna Weidermeyer.

She was of the Lutheran faith.

She is survived by a son, Robert Cohen of Saylorsburg; two daughters , Diann Cohen of Gilbert and Nancy Cohen of Saylorsburg; a sister, Frances Williams of Sayerville, N.J.; and five grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday from the Kresge Funeral Home, with the Rev. Michael Frost officiating. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery, Linden, N.J. A visitation will be held on Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the family in care of the Kresge Funeral Home, P.O. Box 25, Brodheadsville, PA 18322.

Arthur C. Johann

October 17, 1998

Arthur C. Johann, 68, of Stroudsburg and formerly of Queens, N.Y., and Ridgefield, N.J., died Saturday at his home. He was the husband of Crescenza P. "Chris" (Sammatro) Johann, at home.

Born on October 30, 1929, in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was the son of the late Arthur Charles and Ann Josephine (Swords) Johann and moved from Queens, N.Y. to New Jersey 40 years ago and then to Pennsylvania where he lived for the last five years. He worked for Standard Corrugated in Ridgefield, N.J. for 25 years, acting as general manager for the last 16 years. He was then a salesman for State Container Corp. in Moonachie, N.J. for 15 years, retiring in 1994.

A graduate of St. John's Prep in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was a 15-year member of Trout Unlimited and was an avid woodworker.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Mary Scarnecchia, wife of Richard, of Bushkill; a son, Raymond Johann, husband of Helene, of Saddle Brook, N.J.; two step- daughters , Mary Vassallo, wife of Joseph of North Bergen, N.J. and Janet Burke, companion to Andrew Grechniv of Southfields, N.Y.; five grandchildren, Renee Johann, James Johann, Eric Wuenennberg, Jackie Wuenennberg and Melissa Scarnecchia; mother -in-law, Charlotte Sammataro and former wife, Beatrice Johann.

Funeral services will be held today at 4:30 p.m. in William H. Clark Funeral Home, with Rev. Thomas E. Richards, Jr. officiating. Burial will be on Monday at 11 a.m. in Cresthaven Cemetery, Clifton, N.J.

There will be a viewing today from 3-4:30 p.m. and from 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Doris Kelly Woods

October 17, 1998

Doris Kelly Woods died Saturday at St. Clare's Hospital in Dover, N.J., She was 76-years-old.

Born in Rockaway Boro, N.J., she lived in Dover, N.J., before moving to the Lower Berkshire Valley section of Roxbury Township, N.J., in 1956, where she lived until moving to Stroudsburg in 1985. She moved to Andover, N.J., in 1991.

Mrs. Woods was a secretary for the Roxbury Board of Education for 20 years, retiring in 1984.

She was a member of St. Mary's Church of Wharton, N.J.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Warren "Bucky" Woods in 1987. She is survived by three sons , James of Newton, N.J.; Jere of Harveys Lake; and Jeffery of Lower Berkshire Valley, N.J.; one daughter, Anne Reed of Newton, N.J.; a brother, Robert Kelly of Dover, N.J.; and nine grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. from the Bermingham Funeral Home, 249 S. Main St., Wharton, N.J., to a 10 a.m. funeral mass at St. Mary's Church in Wharton. Interment will follow at Succasunna Presbyterian Cemetery, Succasunna, N.J. Visitation will be on today from 3 to 5 and from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Joan E. Tramontina

October 16, 1998

Joan E. Tramontina, 65, of Buck Hill Falls, died Friday evening in Lehigh Valley Hospital Center, Allentown. She was the wife of Albert Tramontina at home.

Born on Nov. 3, 1932, in Philadelphia, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Edna (Goldbeck) Gower, and had lived in the area for the past 28 years, moving here from Lansdale, where she had been active in the Playcrafters in Skippack for six years. She had worked in the cafeteria for the North Penn School District, then for the Pocono Mountain High School, and last worked for Connaught Laboratories in Swiftwater in the cafeteria food service division.

She was a member of the Mountainhome United Methodist Church.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, Mark Tramontina of Buck Hill Falls; a sister, Lois Flemming of Hatfield; two grandsons, Brian of Tarawa Terrace, N.C., and Brantley of Lawrenceville, Ga.; two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, Oct. 24, at 2 p.m. in the Mountainhome United Methodist Church with the Rev. Herbert Detweiler officiating. Cremation took place in the H.G. Smith Crematory, Stroudsburg.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Monroe County Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 144, Stroudsburg, PA 18360.

October 17, 1998

Karen A. Coates, 56, of Leisure Lands, died on Saturday, Oct. 17, 1998, in her home. She was the wife of the late Alan D. Coates.

Born in Irvington, N.J., she was a daughter of the late Frank McKenna and Anna (Lazauskas) McKenna of Red Bank, N.J. She was a resident of Monroe County for the past 10 years, prior to that of Red Bank, N.J.

Karen and her late husband, Alan, were truck drivers, leasing from Transcontinental Refrigerated Lines in Pittston, driving their own rig cross country for five years.

In addition to her mother , she is survived by a brother, Frank McKenna of Palm Springs, Calif.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. in the O'Brien Funeral Home, Wall, N.J. Visitation will take place on Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and on Thursday from 10 a.m. until the time of service in the funeral home.

Entombment will take place in St. Catherine's Cemetery, Wall Township, N.J.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Lehigh Valley Hospice, 1273 N. Ninth St., Stroudsburg, PA 18360.

Local arrangements are by the Lanterman & Allen Funeral Home, 27 Washington St., East Stroudsburg.
