James M. McGarry

James M. McGarry, 61, of Marshalls Creek, died Sunday, September 27, 1998, in Bay Pines Veterans Hospital in Florida.
He was the husband of Joan (Damp) McGarry.
Born in Long Island, N.Y., he was the son of the late James M. McGarry Sr. and Catherine (Hurst) McGarry of Clearwater, Fla.
He was a resident of Monroe County for 21 years, prior to that he resided in Long Island, N.Y.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters , Lisa A. Miller of Reeders and Heather E. Kintner of Bushkill; a son James M. McGarry Jr. of Stroudsburg; and five grandchildren.
He served in the U.S. Navy. He was a member of Local 88 Tile Setters Union in New York.
Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial mass on October 17, 1998 at 10 a.m. at St. Matthews Church in East Stroudsburg.

Florence I. Zacharias, 83 of RR #1, Kunkletown, died Monday, October 5, 1998, at the Palmerton Hospital in Palmerton, Pa.
She was the wife of Homer Zacharias. They had been married 59 years. Born in Dotter's Corner, Kunkletown, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Gertrude (Young) Shupp.
She had worked at Scottie's Fashions in Kresgeville as a Seamstress for over 30 years retiring in 1976. Prior to that she had worked for the Former Midway Pines Mill in Kresgeville.
She was a member of the Salem St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Kresgeville, Pa.
She was a member of the Fairview Senior Citizens in Gilbert, Pa., and the Young at Heart Senior Citizens in Kresgeville, Pa. She had also been a member of the Gnaden Huetten Chapter #203 Order of the Eastern Star in Lehighton, Pa. She was a Recording Secretary for the Patriotic Orders of America #245 in Kresgeville, Pa. She was a member of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union and also a Union Chairlady.
In addition to her husband, Homer, she is survived by 2 sons , Wilbert Zacharias and William Zacharias, both of Lehighton, Pa.; 1 daughter, Emma wife of John Bradford of Landing, N.J.; 2 sisters , Miriam Dotter of Brodheadsville and Jennie Grenz of Gilbert, Pa.; 1 brother, Steward Shupp of Kresgeville; 6 grandchildren; and 3 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, October 8, 1998, at the Donald N. Gower Funeral Home, Inc., Route 209, Gilbert, Pa., with the Rev. Deborah Scheffey officiating. Interment will be in the Dotter's Corner Cemetery, Kunkletown, Pa. Viewing will be held from 7 to 9 p.m., Wednesday, October 7, 1998, at the Funeral Home.

Gloria "Sarge" Sobol

Gloria "Sarge" Sobol, 61, of Scotrun, died Monday at home.
Born on April 25, 1937, in Scranton, she was a daughter of the late Gustav and Anna Sobol and had lived in Monroe County for the past forty years. She had worked at Buck Hills Falls and Skytop and then for East Stroudsburg University for thirty years.
A veteran of the Korean Conflict, she served in the U.S. Army.
She is survived by two uncles, Erwin Sobol of Palmerton and Adam Sobol of Warminster; an aunt, Mary Coe of New Hartford, N.Y.; and special friends Darryl, Darlene and Matthew Frasier of Brodheadsville and Joyce Pugh of Stroudsburg.
Graveside services and burial will be held on Thursday at 2 p.m. in the Tannersville Union Cemetery.

Emma B. Bitzer, 91, of Stroudsburg, died Friday, October 2, in the Slate Belt Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Bangor. She was the wife of the late Wilbert C. Bitzer who died in 1990.
Born on April 12, 1907, in Pittsburgh, she was the daughter of the late Henry G. and Helen (Schwertner) Wachter and had lived in the area since 1968, moving here from Pittsburgh.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Stroudsburg and a former member of the Dames of Malta.
She is survived by two sons , Howard W. Bitzer of Norwich, N.Y., and John H. Bitzer of Stroudsburg; a sister, Helen Watts of Pittsburgh; a brother, William Wachter of Pittsburgh; six grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held on Sunday, October 25, at 3 p.m. in the First Presbyterian Church of Stroudsburg, Main Street, Stroudsburg with the Rev. George Taylor officiating. Cremation was in the H.G. Smith Crematory, Stroudsburg.

Michael Charles Pirdy of Tobyhanna passed away at the home of his daughter on Sunday, October 4, 1998.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Sutera. He was born in Jersey City, N.J., a son of the late James and Anna Schmidt Pirdy.
He was employed as a Transporter for the Bon Secours Health System.
He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by 4 daughters , Michele Grossman of Bethlehem, Marilyn Holdren of Port Charlotte, Fla., MaryAnn Yankovic of Tobyhanna, and Denise Durasky of Punte Gorda, Fla. Also surviving are 3 brothers , Bernie of New Jersey, Edward of Virginia and James of Florida; 2 sisters , Ethel Fleming of New Jersey and Florence Romano of Florida; 12 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

George Ralph Chapman Wilkins, 69, of Effort, died Tuesday, October 6, 1998, at the Allied Skilled Nursing Center in Scranton. He was the husband of Virginia (Turano) Wilkins. They had been married 44 years.
Born in Verdun Quebec, Canada, he was the son of Ethel (Chapman) Wilkins of Melville Sask, Canada, and the late Arthur Wilkins.
He had been an Insurance Agent for Prudential Insurance in Clark, N.J., for over 29 years until his retirement in 1985.
He was an Army Veteran having served during the
Korean War.
In addition to his wife, Virginia, and mother , Ethel, he is survived by 3 daughters , Pamela wife of Fred Stueber of Rahway, N.J., Jill Wilkins of Iselin, N.J., and Victoria wife of Rubin Perez of Cooper City, Fla.; 5 grandchildren, Shawn and Casey Stueber of Rahway, N.J., and Angela, Nicholas, and Jesse Perez of Cooper City, Fla.; 2 sisters , Mary Setter of Melville Sask, Canada, and Nora Cassidy of Quebec, Canada; 3 brothers , Charles Wilkins of Roscommon, Mich., Clifford Wilkins of White Lake, Mich., and Russell Wilkins of New Baltimore, Mich.
Funeral Services will be held 1 p.m. Friday, October 9, 1998, at the Donald N. Gower Funeral Home, Inc., Route 209, Gilbert, with the Rev. Gerald Miller officiating. Alice M. Tierney, 82, Stroudsburg, died on Wednesday at Pocono Medical Center in East Stroudsburg. She was the wife of the late John Tierney, who died in 1976.
Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late John and Barbara M. (Gilbride) Hogan. She was a member of St. Luke's Church in Stroudsburg.
She was employed by Lisa Bee Blouse Mill in Stroudsburg for several years.
She is survived by a daughter, Barbara Hodgson of Stroudsburg; a granddaughter, Mary Alice Shand of Stroudsburg; a grandson, Mark Hodgeson; three sisters , Ann Hogan of Stroudsburg, Catherine Ruddy of Enola and Helen Ratchford of Virginia; three brothers , Robert Hogan and Thomas Hogan, both of Hudson, Fla., and Redmond Hogan of Manchester, Conn. She was preceded in death by a sister, Mary McDonald, who died in 1987.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, Oct. 10, 1998 at 10 a.m. from St. Luke's Church, 828 Main Street, Stroudsburg, with Father Carmen Perry as celebrant. Burial will be in the Gates of Heaven section in Laurelwood Cemetery.
There will be a viewing on Friday, Oct. 9, 1998 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. from the Thomas Funeral Home, .

William D. Higgins, 86, of Colorado Springs, Colo., died on Monday, Oct. 5. He was the husband of Florence (Cole) Higgins to whom he was married 48 years.
He was born Nov. 12, 1911 in Brooklyn, N.Y. He was a retired packaging engineer for Moving/Storage Company.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters , Kathleen Fox of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Geraldine Shane of New York; two sisters ; six grandchildren; and 1 great-grandchild. He is precede in death by five sisters and three brothers .
Cremation is planned. Funeral services will be private at the convenience of the family.

Freddie F. Tittle, 37, of Saylorsburg R.R. 1, died Tuesday in Sacred Heart Hospital in Allentown.
Born in Easton, he was a son of Carol (Bonney) Tittle of Saylorsburg R.R. 1, and the late George Richard Tittle.
He had worked for Tittles Used Auto Parts in Saylorsburg for the past 21 years.
A 1979 graduate of Pleasant Valley High School, he was an avid skier and photographer.
In addition to his mother , he is survived by two brothers , Richard and Yon Tittle, both of Saylorsburg; two sisters , Lorrie Tittle of Wind Gap and Roxanne Stevens of Saylorsburg; a maternal grandfather, Douglas Gist of Richmond; one niece; and one nephew.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday from the Kresge Funeral Home, with teh Rev. Robert Hampton officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Eaton Cemetery, Saylorsburg. A viewing will be held on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m.
