Thomas Ventre Sr.

August 9, 1998

Thomas Ventre Sr., 84, of East Stroudsburg, died on Sunday, August 9 at Pocono Medical Center in East Stroudsburg. He was the husband of Jennie (LaPiana) Ventre, at home.

He was born in Wind Gap, a son of the late Angelo and Mary (Paolucci) Ventre. He was a member of St. Matthew's Catholic Church in East Stroudsburg.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during World War II. He was a member of the George N. Kemp American Legion, Post 346 of East Stroudsburg.

Prior to his retirement he was employed by the former Ronson Lighter Corp in Delaware Water Gap as a tool and dye maker for 30 years.

In addition to his wife he is survived by 3 daughters , Mary Jacobs of San Jose, Calif., Amy Ventre of Lake Tahoe, Calif.; and Jane Marie Ventre of East Stroudsburg; 2 sons , Anthony V. Ventre of East Stroudsburg and Thomas V. Ventre of Tannersville; 2 brothers , Frank Ventre of Winter Haven, Fla., and Tony Ventre of Wind Gap; 2 sisters , Anna Bobalik of Bethlehem, and Rose Cortez of Wind Gap; 4 grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

No funeral services will be held at this time. There will be no viewing.

Cremation will take place in the Arlington Crematory, White hall. Burial will be private in the Stroudsburg Cemetery.

At the request of the family, in lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, Monroe Unit, RR 2 Box 2138, East Stroudsburg, PA 18301.

Margaret Buenzli

August 9, 1998

Margaret Buenzli, 85, of East Stroudsburg, died Sunday, August 9 in Laurel Manor Nursing Home, Stroudsburg.

Born in Washington , N.J., she was the daughter of the late Ernest and Mamie (Sinkbeil) Buenzli.

She was a life long resident of the East Stroudsburg area and was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church of East Stroudsburg. She was employed as a housekeeper for many years.

She is survived by a cousin Christopher Sinkbeil of Phillipsburg, N.J.

Graveside funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 12 at 9 a.m. in the Prospect Cemetery in East Stroudsburg with the Rev. Phyllis Hammel officiating. Interment will follow the service.

Herbert Cone

August 8, 1998

Herbert Cone, 85, of Stroudsburg died Saturday at Pocono Medical Center in East Stroudsburg. He was the widower of Elizabeth (Mendler) Cone.

Born in Philadelphia, he was a resident of Stroudsburg for the past 20 years. Prior to that, he lived in the Philadelphia area.

He was employed by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation as a state road inspector for many years. He was a Navy veteran of World War II

He is survived by two daughters , Joyce Harris of Harleysville and Lynn Schmidt of Perkasie; nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday from the Joseph J. Pula Funeral Home with the Rev. John Puleo officiating. Burial will be in the Stroudsburg Cemetery. Visitation will be on Wednesday from noon until the time of the services.

Roger Taylor

August 9, 1998

Roger Taylor, 55, of Effort, died Sunday in the Pocono Medical Center, East Stroudsburg.

He was the husband of Willie Mae (Walker) Taylor. They had celebrated their 8th wedding anniversary in October of 1997.

Born in Evergreen, Ala., he was a son of the late Ralph and Mamie Lue (Finkles) Taylor.

He had worked for Penn DOT for the past 5 years. Prior to that, he had been a school bus driver in the Pleasant Valley School District for 3 years.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by 6 brothers and 4 sisters .

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday from the Second Mt. Zion Church in Evergreen, Ala. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. A viewing will be held on Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. from the Kresge Funeral Home, Route 209, Brodheadsville.

Carmen A. Centrella

August 9, 1998

Carmen A. Centrella, 63, of Stroudsburg, died Sunday, Aug. 9 in Pocono Medical Center, East Stroudsburg. He was the husband of Joan E. (Schlosser) Centrella.

Born in Pittson, he was the son of the late Alfred and Jenny (Frusciante) Centrella. He was a resident of Stroudsburg for the past 20 years and prior to that he lived in the Flemington, N.J. area.

He was a 1961 graduate of East Stroudsburg University receiving his bachelor of arts degree in education and a master's of arts from Trenton State College in Trenton, N.J. In 1965 he received his master's of administration from Rutgers University.

Carmen devoted his life to education as a teacher, principal and assistant superintendent in the New Jersey area. He retired in 1988 from education and in 1990 until the present he was an associate realtor with the Michael J. McKeown Real Estate Office of Stroudsburg.

He was a member of St. Luke's Roman Catholic Church of Stroudsburg and served in the U.S. Airforce.

In addition to his wife Joan, he is survived by three sons : Nicholas and his wife Diane Centrella, Christopher Centrella, and Sean Cuff, all of Stroudsburg; a daughter, Kathleen Cuff of Stroudsburg; four brothers , Alfred and John Centrella, both of Pittston, Anthony Centrella of Old Forge, and Joseph Centrella of Laflin; one sister, Helen Piorkowski of Seymour, Conn.; two grandchildren, Garland and Nicole; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother James and a sister Theresa.

A Memorial Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, Aug. 12 at 10 a.m. from St. Luke's Roman Catholic Church of Stroudsburg. There will be no visitation.

The family request memorial donations to be made to the Stroudsburg High School Marching Band attention Wm. Austell c/o Activity Office 1100 W. Main Street, Stroudsburg, PA 18360 or the General Ambulance Corps 1000 Sunrise Drive, Stroudsburg, PA 18360.

Steven A. Shepard

August 10, 1998

Steven A. Shepard, 49, of Mountainhome, died Monday in the Pocono Medical Center, East Stroudsburg.

Born on January 22, 1949, in East Stroudsburg, he was the son of Bernice E. (Rinehart) Shepard-Albert of Mountainhome and the late Donald S. Shepard and the grandson of the late Elmer and Flora Rinehart. He was a life long resident of Mountainhome and was a member of the Mountainhome United Methodist Church.

A graduate of Pocono Mountain High School, Steven was an active member of the Greene-Dreher Volunteer Fire Company for the past twenty years. His many activities included being Santa Clause, planning the annual Easter Egg Hunt and a member of the fire police.

In addition to his mother , he is survived by two brothers , Donald S. Shepard of Newfoundland and Michael B. Shepard of East Stroudsburg and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. in the Mountainhome United Methodist Church with Rev. Herbert Detweiler officiating.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Greene-Dreher Volunteer Fire Company, Newfoundland, PA 18445.

James W. Walter

August 11, 1998

James W. Walter, 66, of Cresco, died Tuesday in the Veterans Hospital Center, Washington , D.C.

Born on May 25, 1932 in Barrett Township, he was the son of the late James E. and Margaret (Klippert) Walter and had lived in Barrett Township all of his life.

He had been the owner/operator of Walter's TV Sales and Service in Mountainhome.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean Conflict. A graduate of Barrett High School, he was a member of the Mountainhome United Methodist Church and the Pocono Lodge #780 F & AM, Cresco.

He was a former fire chief for the Pocono International Raceway and a four term Fire chief for the Barrett Township Volunteer Fire Company.

He is survived by a daughter, Wendy Sue Young, wife of John, of Greencastle; and two grandsons, Cody Young and Joshua Young. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Tami Lynne Walter in 1975 and a son, Terry William Walter in 1958.

Funeral services will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. in the William H. Clark Funeral Home, with the Rev. Russell E. Walters officiating.Burial will follow in the Oakland Cemetery, Mountainhome.

There will be a viewing on Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Barrett Township Volunteer Fire Co., P.O. Box 1, Buck Hill Falls, PA 18323 or to the American Cancer Society, RR 2, Box 2138, Stroudsburg, PA 18360 or to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Reba B. Hughes

August 11, 1998

Reba B. Hughes, 89, of Market Street, Bangor, died Tuesday morning, August 11 in Lehigh Valley Hospital Center, Salisbury Township, following injuries sustained in an automobile accident on Saturday, August 8th on Route 209 and 115 in Monroe County.

She was the widow of Evan H. Hughes, who died on October 30, 1979.

Born May 14, 1909 in Portland, she was a daughter of the late George and Lucy (Brands) Houck.

Mrs. Hughes was last employed as a sewing machine operator by the former Chi Chi Fashions in Bangor, retiring in 1978. Prior to this she was employed by the former Stylecraft Mill in Bangor, and the former Julius H. Kayser Hosiery Mill in Bangor.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Bangor, where she was a member of the Adult Sunday School Class and the United Methodist Women.

She was a member of the St. David's Welsh Society of the Slate Belt, and the Slate Belt Chapter of A.A.R.P. Also a member of the Liberty Ambulance Ladies Auxiliary, Dyle E. Bray, V.F.W. Post #739, Ladies Auxiliary and the Bangor Elks Lodge #1106, Ladies Auxiliary, all of Bangor. The I.L.G.W.U. and the Portland High School Alumni Association.

She enjoyed doing word search puzzles.

She is survived by a daughter, Louise E. Edelman of Wind Gap; a sister, Ida H. Hocking of Bethlehem; Sandra Labar Capozzolo of Bangor, who she helped to raise 2 granddaughters. She is preceded in death by one brother and one sister.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday from the Hough Home for Funerals, Inc., 207 Market Street, Bangor.

Interment will be in St. John's Cemetery, Bangor. Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church, 55 North Third Street, Bangor, PA 18013.

August 11, 1998

Amy K. Manser, 96, of Stroudsburg, died Tuesday, August 11, in the Pleasant Valley Manor Nursing Home, Snydersville, where she was a resident.

She was the wife of the late Spencer Manser and the companion of the late William M. Wehr.

Born in Marshalls Creek, she was the daughter of the late Joseph H. and Carrie (Walters) Kennedy. She was a life long resident of the Bushkill area and with her family they owned and operated the Bushkill Inn for 27 years.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held today, Aug. 13 at 1:30 p.m. from the Joseph J. Pula Funeral Home, 23 North Ninth Street, Stroudsburg.

Burial will be in the Shawnee Presbyterian Cemetery, Shawnee-on-Delaware.

Visitation will be from 12:30 p.m. today, Aug. 13, until the time of the services.
