John W. Jenkins

August 4, 1998

John W. Jenkins, 76, of Effort and Englewood, Florida, died on Tuesday, Aug. 4, 1998 at the home of his daughter Nancy J. Landis of Moore Township, Northampton County where he was living. He was the husband of Doris S. (Shearer) Jenkins, at home; they were married July 26, 1947.

He was born in Easton, on August 4, 1922, the son of the late William A. and Margaret I. Edwards Jenkins. He was a member of Effort United Methodist Church, Effort.

He was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving during World War II; He was a member of the American Legion Post #0397 Hellertown for over 50 years; and a member of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter FL82 since 1984.

Prior to his retirement in 1974, he worked as a salesman for Tastykake in South Bethlehem and Hellertown for 30 years. Prior to being in the service he worked at Bethlehem Steel for several years.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by 1 son, Craig W. Jenkins of Herndon, Va.; and 2 daughters , Nancy J. wife of Lynn Landis of Moore Township and Jennifer A. wife of Michael Leseberg of Sciota; 3 granddaughters; 1 sister, Mary Louise Burkhardt of Bethlehem.

Graveside funeral services will be held on Tuesday, August 11, 1998 at 11 a.m. at Mt. Eaton Cemetery, Saylorsburg, Ross Township with the Rev. Dave Felker officiating. Burial will follow. Cremation will be in the George G. Bensing Funeral Home Inc. Crematory, Moorestown. There will be no viewing.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to either Effort United Methodist Church, PO Box 545, Effort, PA 18330 or to the VNA of Eastern PA - HOSPICE DISCRETIONARY FUND, 1510 Valley Center Parkway, Bethlehem, PA 18017.

Addie Serfass

August 6, 1998

Addie Serfass, age 89, of RD1, Kunkletown, died Thursday, August 6, 1998 at her residence.

She was the wife of the late Paul A. Serfass, who died in 1994.

Born in Knoxin, Wyoming County she was the daughter of the late Warren and Elizabeth (Seipler) Miller.

She had been a machine operator in various mills including Scotties Fashions in Kresgeville for 41 years until her retirement in 1971.

She was a member of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union.

She was also a member of the Polk Township Volunteer Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary, the Young at Heart Senior Citizens and the Patriotic Order of America Lodge, all of Kresgeville.

She is survived by 2 sons , Stanley Serfass and Lloyd Serfass, both of RR1, Kunkletown; 2 daughters , Alverta, wife of Elmer Heissam of RD#3, Kunkletown and Lorraine, wife of Henry Durkop of RR#5, Kunkletown; 1 sister, Pauline Bruch of Palmerton; 10 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday at the Donald N. Gower Funeral Home, Inc., Route 209, Gilbert, with the Rev. Deborah Scheffey officiating. Interment will follow in the Dotter's Corner Cemetery, Kunkletown. Viewing will be held 10 a.m. Monday until time of services.

Memorial donations may be made to the Salem St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Kresgeville, PA 18333.

Mildred Oney

August 6, 1998

Mildred Oney, 80, of Stroudsburg and formerly of East Stroudsburg, died on Thursday evening, August 6, at the Pleasant Valley Manor. She was the wife of the late George R. Oney, who died in 1982.

She was born in Clarion, a daughter of the late James and Ada Wagner. She had been a resident of Monroe County for most of her lifetime. Prior to her retirement, she was employed at the Milford Manor in East Stroudsburg in the housekeeping department, prior to that by the Laurel Manor in Stroudsburg in the housekeeping department and prior to that she was a seamstress for many of the local blouse factories.

She is survived by a son, Andrew J. Oney of East Stroudsburg; 4 grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a son, George R. Oney Jr.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 10, at 11 a.m. in the Lanterman & Allen Funeral Home, 27 Washington Street, East Stroudsburg with the Reverend Raymond Poortstra officiating. Interment will be in the Prospect Cemetery, East Stroudsburg. Relatives and friends may pay their respects on Sunday evening from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Carl S. Stoddart

August 6, 1998

Carl S. Stoddart, 68, of Blairstown, N.J., died Thursday at Newton Memorial Hospital, Newton, N.J. Born in Blairstown, N.J., Mr. Stoddart was a son of the late Harold and Rosa Maring Stoddart. He was a retired contractor who worked for several contractors in the area. He was a member of Blairstown Hose Co. #1, an Exempt Fireman, and a member of the N.J. Fireman's Association.

Mr. Stoddart was predeceased by a daughter, Darlene Stoddart, in 1981. He is survived by four sons , Jerry and Carl of Blairstown, N.J., Tony Banghart of Honolulu, and Shane Banghart, at home; two daughters , Janice and Heather, at home; three grandchildren; and two brothers , Cecil and Donald Stoddart, both of Blairstown, N.J.

Funeral services will be held Monday, 11 a.m. at the Newbaker Funeral Home, Route 94, Blairstown, N.J. Burial will follow at the Cedar Ridge Cemetery, Blairstown, N.J. Visitation will be held at the funeral home, Sunday from 6 to 9 p.m., during which there will be a Fireman's Service.

Donations may be made to Blairstown Hose Co. #1, P.O. Box 239, Blairstown, N.J. 07825.

Thomas W. Gardner

August 6, 1998

Thomas W. Gardner, 74, of Stroudsburg, died on Thursday at St. Luke's Hospital, Fountain Hill. He was the husband of Mildred (Frederick) Gardner, with whom he had celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in February of this year.

Born in Washington , he was the son of the late Charles and Elizabeth (Blair) Gardner.

Upon graduation from Stroudsburg High School and serving in The United States Navy during World War II, he worked for Bell Telephone until his retirement in 1981.

He was a member of Zion United Church of Christ, Stroudsburg. He was also a member of The Optimist Club in Stroudsburg; Barger Lodge F & AM #325 in Stroudsburg; and The Numismatic Club.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by 2 sons , Thomas of San Antonio, Texas and Timothy of Columbus, Ohio; and 2 grandsons, Nathan and Blair of San Antonio, Texas .

Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 10, at 12 noon from the Thomas Funeral Home, 401 North Fifth Street, Stroudsburg, with Brigadier ( r ) Henry Baker officiating. Burial will take place at the convenience of the family in Laurelwood Cemetery.

There will be a viewing on Monday from 11 a.m. to 12 noon at the funeral home.

Memorial donations should be made to the General Ambulance Corp., 1000 Sunrise Drive, Stroudsburg, PA 18360.

August 6, 1998

Lillie C. Leida, 101, St. Augustine, Fla., formerly of Stroudsburg, died on Thursday in St. Augustine. She was the wife of the late Samuel K. Leida, who died in 1977.

Born in Saylorsburg, she was the daughter of the late Franklin and Mary Ann (Gower) Andrew.

She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Stroudsburg.

She is survived by a daughter, Jean L. Ace of St. Augustine, Fla.; a son, Charles Leida of Tulsa, Okla.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Graveside funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 12 at 1 p.m. from the Laurelwood Cemetery, Stroudsburg.

There will be a viewing on Wednesday from 12 noon to 12:45 p.m. from the Thomas Funeral Home, 401 North Fifth Street, Stroudsburg.

Memorial donations should be made to the St. John's Lutheran Church, 9 North Ninth Street, Stroudsburg, PA 18360.

David William Sherry

August 4, 1997

Mr. David William Sherry, who passed away in Jonas, on August 4, 1997, will be laid to rest on August 21, 1998. A funeral with military honors will be held at the Brig Gen William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Wrightstown (Arneytown), N.J., at 11 a.m. A reception will be held afterwards at the VFW hall in Cookstown from 12 noon until 2 p.m.

Mr. Sherry spent most of his life in New Jersey. After graduating from Cranford High School, he went on to serve his country as a US Marine in Korea for 5 years.

He was an employee of New Jersey Bell Telephone in Plainfield for over 30 years. He also served for a number of years as a volunteer on the local rescue squad.

Mr. Sherry was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America, the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Masonic Order, and the Volunteer Fire Department.

He is survived by two sons , Mr. David Hays of Lake Worth, Fla., and Mr. Glenn Hays of Leesburg, Va; and three grandsons, Joshua, Matthew, and Benjamin.

Joan H. Kline

August 6, 1998

Joan H. Kline, 62, of Brodheadsville, died Thursday in the Brookmont Health Care Center, Effort.

Born in North Arlington, N.J., she was a daughter of the late John Hull and the late Sadie (Redner) Hull Smith.

She was of the Protestant faith.

She is survived by two daughters , Joyce Staninas of Brodheadsville and Barbara Boudreau of Morris Plains, N.J.; a sister, Marge Budenas of Toms River, N.J.; and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers , Fred Hull and Matthew Smith.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday from the Kresge Funeral Home, Route 209, Brodheadsville, with the Rev. Michael Frost officiating. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family in Buena Vista Cemetery, Brodheadsville. A viewing will be held on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Lloyd L. Slater

August 6, 1998

Lloyd L. Slater, 71, of Moorestown, died on Thursday, August 6, 1998 in his home.

He is the husband of Lois (Dalrymple) Slater. They were married 48 years this last June.

Born January 4, 1927 in Rockaway, N.J., he was the son of the late Loyd J. Slater and Minnie (Fichter) Slater.

He was employed as a quality control engineer for Xerox, Rochester, N.Y., and as a quality control engineer for Intermedics, Inc., Freeport, Texas , and retired in 1991. He was a member of Stroudsburg Wesleyan Church.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by 1 son, Pastor David Slater of Averill Park, N.Y.; 4 daughters , Deborah DeCiantis of Rockhill, S.C., Donna Kline of Syracuse, N.Y., Denise Damboise of East Stroudsburg, and Darcy Hendrick of Apple Valley, Calif.; 15 grandchildren; and 1 great-grandson.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m., Monday, August 10, 1998 in the Flickinger Funeral Home, Coudersport, Potter County. Interment will be in Rathbone Cemetery, Osweyo.

Viewing from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, August 9, 1998 in the George G. Bensing Funeral Home, Moorestown, 2165 Community Drive, Bath.

Michael C. Jacabella

August 6, 1998

Michael J. Jacabella, 82, of Shawnee on Delaware, died on Thursday, August 6 at the Veterans Medical Center in Plains Township. He was the husband of Pearl (Meyer) Jacabella, at home.

He was born in Port Chester, N.Y., a son of the late Ralph and Anna (Sabato) Jacobelli. He was a member of the East Stroudsburg United Methodist Church; a church Board Member and taught Sunday School for many years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during World War II in the European-African Middle Eastern Theater as a corporal with the field artillery.

He was employed by the East Stroudsburg School District as an American History teacher and assistant football coach until he retired in 1977. He also was a Elementary teacher at the Smithfield School. Prior to that he was an American History teacher at North Hunterdon Regional High School in New Jersey for a year and also in Maine, New York. He taught for 30 years.

He was a graduate of East Stroudsburg University with a degree in Physical Education in 1947, he received his Master Degree in History from Lehigh Valley University in 1953.

He was a graduate of Port Chester High School and played varsity football.

During the summers he was employed by Fred Waring's Shawnee Inn as a recreation director for 30 years. He was also a swimming coach at Shawnee Inn. He was a member of the V.F.W. Thomas P. Lambert Post 2540 in East Stroudsburg. He was a historian for Shawnee Inn and gave many tours.

Michael also served with the U.S. Marine Corps from 1934 to 1938; then from 1949 to 1953 he was a member of the U.S. Army Ready Reserve Unit and from 1962 to 1967 he was a member of the U.S. Air Force Reserve. He was also an Eagle Scout and a Boy Scout Master for many years.

In addition to his wife he is survived by 2 daughters , Michele H. Jacabella of Shawnee on Delaware, and Judy M. Jacabella of Lancaster; a son, Reverend Gary M. Jacabella of Christiana; a granddaughter, Olivia Anne Jacabella of Christiana; a brother, Frank Jacobelli of Mountain Top; 2 sisters , Madeline Nicastro of Norwalk, Conn., and Ann Tiani of New Canaan, Conn.; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Anthony Jacobelli.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend funeral services which will be held on Tuesday, August 11, at 11 p.m. in the East Stroudsburg United Methodist Church, 83 South Courtland Street, East Stroudsburg with the Reverend Doctor Edward C. Kimes officiating.

Interment will be in the Prospect Cemetery, East Stroudsburg. There will be no viewing.

At the request of the family, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the East Stroudsburg United Methodist Church, 83 South Courtland Street, East Stroudsburg, PA.
