Alvin Lewis Austin

Alvin Lewis Austin, 82, of Mountainhome, died on Friday, July 24, 1998 at the NHC Healthcare Center in Dunlap, Tenn., after a lingering illness.
Mr. Austin was born on May 16, 1916 in Henoeye Falls, New York. He was the son of the late Benjamin Austin and Laura Lewis Austin.
From the beginning of his life Mr. Austin was raised in an Aviational environment. At the age of 16, he built and flew his own glider. After graduation he launched directly into his aviation career working as a flight instructor and handling flying assignments in upstate New York. From New York, he jumped halfway around the world to fly in the Philippines for an outfit which later became the Philippine Airlines.
During World War II, he flew with the North Atlantic operations of the Air Transport Command carrying supplies and food to the war zone and transporting the wounded back to the United States.
Returning to the United States in 1940, he joined the American Airlines. Most of Capt. Austin's career had been spent based in New York on domestic flights, then later in the Pacific of the Hawaiian Islands, Figi, Samoa and down under the to Australia and New Zealand. Captain Austin retired after 36 years with American Airlines. In his 44 years of flying, he had flown well in excess of 15 million miles (at least 10 million of these miles were flown with American Airlines).
Following retirement Capt. Austin was an active member on the board of directors for the Mount Pocono Municipal Airport in Monroe County. He was also a volunteer driver for the Barrett Ambulance Corp in Mountainhome. He was a proud member of the Quiet Birdsman since 1938.
Mr. Austin is survived by his wife Gwendolyn Price Austin and a daughter, Teressa Joan Foster, both of Sequatchie, Tenn.; two grandchildren, Allen W. Foster of Sequatchie, Tenn., and Susan Harrison of Dunlap, Tenn.; two great-grandchildren, Tyler and Laura Frick of Dunlap, Tenn.; and a nephew, Thomas Mullen of Cresco.
Funeral services for Mr. Austin will be held Saturday, July 25 at 4 p.m. CDT in Ewton Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Don Everhart officiating. The family will receive Saturday from 3 to 4 p.m. CDT.

Doris (Hanna) Saunders-Oxton, 71, of East Stroudsburg, formerly of Ridgefield, N.J., died on July 24. Beloved daughter of Dorothy (Teague) Hanna of Ridgefield, N.J. Devoted wife of Thomas of East Stroudsburg. Loving mother of Kevin Edward of Little Ferry, N.J., Timothy Michael of Hewitt, N.J., Steven Gregory of North Carolina and the late Brian Saunders. Loving sister of Grace Hackett of East Stroudsburg and William Hanna of Ridgefield, N.J. Loving grandmother of Matthew, Ashley, Keith and Raymond Saunders.
Before retiring, she was a secretary. She was a volunteer at the Pocono Medical Center.
Visiting at Blackley Funeral Home, 809 Broad Ave., Ridgefield, N.J., on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., with a funeral service at 8:30 p.m. Monday. Cremation will be private.

Mary Burnett Stillman, 81, formerly of Stroudsburg died Thursday, July 23, at home.
She was born in Stroudsburg, where she lived until moving to Edison, N.J. in 1935.
Stillman was a homemaker and a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Metuchen. She was predeceased by her husband, Richard Jago, in 1970 and a daughter, Mary Leonora Wales, in 1994.
She is survived by her daughter, Joan Minghenelli of Coolbaugh Township, two sisters , Leonora Wendell of Ol'Tappan, N.J., and Ethel Painter of Florida, and a nephew, Rogers Deihl. She had five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 9 a.m. Monday, July 27 at the Koyan Funeral Home, 319 Amboy Ave., Metuchen, followed by a 10 a.m. funeral service at the First Presbyterian Church of Metuchen. Internment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery, Piscataway, N.J.

Elmer L. Leap Sr., 74, of Sciota, died Friday in Pleasant Valley Manor, Snydersville.
He was the husband of Norma R. (Willet) Leap at home. They had observed their 53rd wedding anniversary in February.
Born in Reeders, he was a son of the late Earl and Mae Irene (Setzer) Leap.
He had been a dispatcher for Rock Hill in Bossardsville for 12 years, retiring in 1988. Prior to that, he had been a dispatcher for Houdaille in Stroudsburg for 23 years.
He was a member of the Stroudsburg Seventh-day Adventist Church, where he had also served as a church deacon.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by four sons , Donald E. Leap Sr. and Elmer L Leap Jr., both of Sciota, Wayne A. Leap of Stroudsburg and Earl R. Leap of Pamplin, Va.; three daughters , Doris L. Masten of Stroudsburg, Carolyn J. Gagnon of East Stroudsburg and Helen M. Stephens of Cleveland, Tenn.; a brother, William E. Leap of Sciota; 16 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Glenn L. Leap; a daughter, Ruth Elaine Leap; and by a sister, Mary C. Hahn.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday from the Kresge Funeral Home, Route 209, Brodheadsville, with the Rev. Jerry Small officiating. Burial will be in Buena Vista Cemetery, Brodheadsville. A viewing will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday and from 10 a.m. until the time of the service Tuesday.

Mary E. Rustine, 87, of Bethlehem, and formerly of Appenzell, died Saturday in Manor Care Nursing Home, Bethlehem.
She was the wife of the late Joseph A. Rustine.
Born in Brodheadsville, she was a daughter of the late Millard and Sarah (Arnold) Brong.
She was a member of St. Mark's Community Lutheran Church in Appenzell.
She is survived by three daughters , Lorraine Granacher of R.R. 3 Stroudsburg, Ruth Ann Starner of Allentown and Jean Check of Bethlehem; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Janet M. Gower.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday from the Kresge Funeral Home, Route 209, Brodheadsville, with the Rev. Harry Laubach officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Appenzell. A viewing will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of the service Monday.

James H. Tippett

James H. Tippett, 77, of Robinhood Lakes, Kunkletown, and Langhorne, died Friday, July 24, 1998, at the Brookmont Health Care Center in Effort.
He was the husband of Alice (Zimmerman) Tippett. They had been married 51 years.
Born in Wilkes-Barre, he was the son of the late Harold and Emily (Stevens) Tippett.
He was an insurance agent for State Farm in Oakford for 30 years, retiring in 1988.
He was a decorated World War II Army Air Corp veteran, having served in England.
He was a member of the Northampton Presbyterian Church in Holland, where he wang in the choir for more than 20 years.
He had graduated from Wyoming Seminary in 1939. He was a graduate of Ursinus College in Collegeville in 1943 and then graduated from the Unversity of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia in 1946.
He had served on the planning commission in Lower Southampton Township from 1948 to 1958. He was a member of the F&AM of Jenkintown and Kingston. He was a 32º Mason of the Lehigh Consistery in Allentown. He was a member of the Fidelity Band from 1948 to 1958 in Bristol and Levittown.
In addition to his wife Alice, he is survived by a daughter, Janice, wife of paul Hofreiter of West Trenton, N.J.; a son, James H. Tippett Jr. of Yardville, N.J.; a brother, Robert Tippett of Kingston; and three grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 29, 1998, at the Donald N. Gower Funeral Home Inc., Route 209, Gilbert, with the Rev. Gerald Miller officiating. Entombment will be in the Sunset Memorial Park in Feasterville. There will be no viewing.

Mary Alice Berry Lowe Meagher

Mary Alice Berry Lowe Meagher, 71, of Murfreesboro, Tenn., formerly of Leeds, Ala., and Stroudsburg, died Thursday.
She was a 1944 graduate of Beaumont High School of St. Louis, Mo. She was plant secretary of Rock Wool Manufacturing Co., Leeds, Ala., from 1973 to 1980.
She is survived by a daughter, Catherine A. Lowe of Nashville, Tenn.; two step- daughters , Karen Small of Lancaster and Sherry Risberg of Jacksonville, Fla.; a son, Bob Lowe of Leeds, Ala.; and five grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two husbands, Robert E. Lowe and Robert J. Meagher.
Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Monday at the Kilgroe Funeral Home Chapel, 651 Ashville Road, N.E., Leeds, Ala. Burial will be at Forest Crest.

Dorothy "Dot" A. Mosier

Dorothy "Dot" A. Mosier, 65, of Smithfield Township, died on Sunday, July 26, 1998 at home. She was the wife of Milton A. Mosier. They have been married for 48 years.
Born in Gouldsboro, a daughter of Agnes (Bensley) Evans of East Stroudsburg and the late Leo Evans. She was a resident of Monroe County for most of her lifetime.
She was co-owner and manager of Mosier's Dairy in East Stroudsburg for 33 years. She was an auditor for Smithfield Township for the past 24 years. Prior to the dairy, she was an executive secretary to the head of the shipping department at the former Ronson Lighter Company in Delaware-Water-Gap for 5 years.
She graduated from Stroudsburg High School in 1950. She was a member of the Monroe County Democratic Committee and attended Calvary Bible Church in East Stroudsburg.
In addition to her husband and mother , she is survived by 2 sons , Michael P. Mosier and Milton A. Mosier II, both of East Stroudsburg; 6 grandchildren; 1 great-granddaughter; a brother, Donald Evans of Tucson, Ariz.; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 31, 1998 at 11 a.m. in the Lanterman & Allen Funeral Home, 27 Washington Street, East Stroudsburg with Rev. Robert McGann officiating.
A viewing will take place on Thursday, July 30, 1998 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Lanterman & Allen Funeral Home, East Stroudsburg.
Interment will take place in Prospect Cemetery, East Stroudsburg, PA.

Marion E. Smiley, 89, East Stroudsburg, died on Tuesday at Laurel Manor in Stroudsburg. She was the wife of the late Kenneth H. Smiley, who died in 1983.
Born in Bangor, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Elna (Ruff) Alleger.
She was a member of the Analomink United Methodist Church.
She is survived by three daughters : Josephine Sebring of East Stroudsburg; Elizabeth Metzger of Lancaster; and Doris Woodling of Mountainhome; three brothers : Daniel Alleger of Florida; Charles Alleger of East Stroudsburg; and John Alleger of Maryland; a sister, Alice Russell of New Jersey; six grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in the Analomink Cemetery, Analomink.
There will be no viewing.

Sandra Lee Kun, 55, of Palmerton, died Sunday, July 26, 1998 at home. She was the wife of Stephen J. Kun. They were married for 33 years.
Born on Feb. 6, 1943 in Palmerton, the daughter of Eleanor M. (Miller) Nothstein of Slatington, and the late Herman A. Nothstein.
She was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Palmerton. She was a volunteer for the Lutheran Services Northeast and Volunteer Home Care for many years.
She was employed by BMP Book Distributors for two years retiring in 1996 and prior to that she was employed by Loreal as a sales representative for eight years.
In addition to her husband and mother , she is survived by a daughter, Melissa A. and her husband Richard DeSocio of Palmerton, and one grandson.
Memorial contributions may be made the Lehigh Valley Hospice, Palmerton Office.
Calling hours will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday and from 9 to 9:30 a.m. on Thursday. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. on Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 235 Lafayette Ave., Palmerton. Interment in Sacred Heart New Cemetery in Palmerton.
