Jack L. Hardy, 78, of East Stroudsburg died on Saturday at Pocono Medical Center in East Stroudsburg. He was the husband of Marie (Doll) Hardy, at home.
Born in Analomink, he was the son of the late James and Hattie (Herman) Hardy. He was a lifelong resident of Monroe County.
He worked as a fork-lift operator and outside yard worker for Cramer's Cashway in East Stroudsburg for 17 years, before retiring in 1987. Prior to that, he worked for McGraw-Edison in East Stroudsburg.
He was a life member of the CLU Club in East Stroudsburg. He was also a member of the V.F.W. #2540, Thomas P. Lambert Post and the Evans-Blitz Home Association, Inc.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters , Beverly Strunk and Jackilyn Gilliland, both of East Stroudsburg; four sons Jack L. Hardy and Larry Hardy, both of Stroudsburg and James J. Hardy and Samuel L. Hardy, both of East Stroudsburg; a sister, Geraldine Stettler, East Stroudsburg; three step sons , Daniel Mager, Ashland, Ky.; Wesley Mager, Stroudsburg and Randy Kellison, Mount Pocono; two stepdaughters, Waamie Fletcher, Nev. and Vickie Sayer, East Stroudsburg; and many grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Mimlitsch and William L. Hardy.
Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. from the Thomas Funeral Home, 401 North Fifth Street, Stroudsburg, with the Rev. Ronald H. Stott officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Hill Memorial garden, East Stroudsburg.
There will be a viewing on Tuesday from 10 to 11 a.m. from the funeral home.

Lena Rachel Russo, age 87, of RD 4, Saylorsburg, died Sunday at the Mahoning Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Lehighton.
She was the wife of the late Pasquela Russo.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, she was the daughter of the late Anielo and Anna Savoia.
She had owned and operated the Five Gabels Restaurant in Cedarhurst for 30 years until her retirement in 1975.
She was a former member of St. Mark's Catholic Church at Ocean Avenue in Brooklyn, New York.
She is survived by a daughter, Rose Ann Salozzo of Calabasas, California; a son, Salvatore Russo of Saylorsburg; a brother, Ralph Savoia of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida; 3 sisters , Margaret Lauro, Dora Savoia and Connie Nasti, all of Brooklyn, New York; 8 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 9:30 a.m. Thursday, July 23, at St. Mark's Catholic Church on Ocean Avenue in Brooklyn, New York. Viewing will be held 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at the Torregrossa and sons Funeral Home, 2265 Flatbush Avenue, Brooklyn, New York. Entombment will be in the Pinelawn Memorial Park, Farmingdale, New York.

Ernest R. Shultz, 94, of Stroudsburg, died Sunday in the Pocono Medical Center, East Stroudsburg. He was the husband of Helen L. (Lemon) Shutlz, at home.
Born on October 25, 1903 in Kimmel, Somerset County, he was the son of the late Noah C. and Margaret (Barclay) Shultz and had lived in the area since 1968 moving here from Wynnewood, Montgomery County. He had worked as a civil engineer with the Pennsylvania Railroad for forty years retiring in 1964.
A 1924 graduate of Penn State University with a bachelor of science degree in engineering, he was a member and Deacon of the First Presbyterian Church, Stroudsburg; a member of the Glenside Lodge #67 F&AM; and a former Professional Engineer, State of PA.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Edgar R. "Dick" Shultz of Cherry Hill, N.J.; five grandchildren, Dan, Jenifer, Tom, Richie and Gaylea; and one great-grandson.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. in the First Presbyterian Church of Stroudsburg with Rev. Carol Brown and Rev. George Taylor officiating. Private burial was in the Laurelwood Cemetery, Stroudsburg.

Richard C. Kitchen Sr., 66, of Stroudsburg, died Sunday, September 27, in the Wilkes-Barre Veterans Hospital. He was the husband of Katherine (Staples) Kitchen.
Born in Columbia, N.J., he was the son of the late Leon and Margaret (Linaberry) Kitchen. He was a resident of Monroe County for many years.
He was employed as a truck driver for F & F Paving of Bartonsville for 15 years before retiring in 1992.
He was of the Methodist Faith. He as a U.S. Army Veteran of the
Korean War.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters , Victoria DiGiovanni of Blakeslee and Lorraine Kitchen of Oklahoma ; five sons , Vernon Kitchen of East Stroudsburg, Gregory Kitchen of Stroudsburg, Jerry Kuzaro and Kevin Kuzaro, both of Wellsville, N.Y., and Robert Kitchen of Tennessee; and 9 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Richard C. Kitchen Jr.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, September 29, at 7:30 p.m. in the Lanterman & Allen Funeral Home, 27 Washington Street, East Stroudsburg, with Rev. Raymond Poortstra officiating.
Relatives and friends may pay their respects on Tuesday from 7 p.m. till the time of the service. Burial will take place at a later date in the Fairview Cemetery in Columbia, N.J.

Ruth J. Berger, 50, of Effort, died Monday morning at her home. She was the wife of Ronald W. Berger at home.
Born on October 25, 1947 in Stroudsburg, she was the daughter of Graydon and Mildred (Weber) LaBar of Stroudsburg and had lived in the area all of her life. She had worked as a registered nurse at the Pocono Medical Center, East Stroudsburg for the last fifteen years, retiring in 1996 due to ill health.
A 1965 graduate of Stroudsburg High School and a 1989 graduate of Regents College, she was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Effort. She was a avid horse lover.
In addition to her husband and parents, she is survived by a son, Gregory Berger at home; a daughter, Vicki Berger of Stroudsburg; two sisters , Jean Ludwig of Roanoke, Va., and Joan Devino of Stroudsburg; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. in the William H. Clark Funeral Home, with Rev. Michael A. Frost officiating. Burial will follow in the Laurelwood Cemetery, Stroudsburg.
There will be a viewing on Thursday from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home.

Roy F. Compton, 72, of Brodheadsville, died Tuesday, September 29, in Brookmont Nursing Home, Chestnuthill Township. He was the husband of Evelyn (Hendricks) Compton.
Born in Pen Argyl, he was the son of the late William and Carrie (Hemberger) Compton. He was a resident of Monroe County for most of his life.
He was employed as an X-Ray Specialist for the Patterson Kelley Corporation of East Stroudsburg for 33 years before retiring in 1985 and was a member of the Local 397, Brotherhood of International Boiler Maker, Iron Ship Builders and Blacksmiths.
He was a U.S. Navy Veteran during World War II and was a member of the John Lambert VFW Post in East Stroudsburg.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Kay Morris of Bangor; three step- daughters , Linda Miller of Brodheadsville, Donna Smith and Debra Meeker, both of East Stroudsburg; a sister, Dorothy Humphrey of Bangor; nine grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, Oct. 2 at 11 a.m. in the Lanterman & Allen Funeral Home, 27 Washington Street, East Stroudsburg, with Rev. Dr. Edward Kimes.

Lee M. Dengler Jr. of Patuxent River, Md., formerly of San Diego, Calif., and Topton, died on September 26, 1998 in Hawthorne, Nevada, while on a search and rescue mission for the U.S. Navy. He was the husband of Maria Francesca (Ortiz) Dengler at home.
He was born in Reading, the son of Lee M. Dengler Sr. of Kunkletown and Lucinda M. (Bleiler) Warmkessel of Topton.
He was a 1988 graduate of Brandywine Heights Area High School and numerous U.S. Navy schools. He was serving in the U.S. Navy, stationed at Air Test and Evaluation Squadron One at Naval Air Station, Patuxent River, Md. Prior to that he was stationed at Helicopter Anti Submarine Squadron Eight at Naval Air Station, North Island, Calif. He attended Boot Camp at Recruit Training Command Center, Orlando, Fla.
He was a member of the Ray A. Master Post 217, American Legion of Topton.
In addition to his wife and parents, he is survived by two sons , Thane M. Dengler and Zachary O. Dengler, at home; a sister, Jenny M., wife of John A. Rohrbach of Mertztown; a step-mother , Susan M. (Smiley) Dengler of Kunkletown; and a step-grandmother, Betty L. Bleiler of Fleetwood.
Services will be held on Friday at 2 p.m. at the Lock Ridge Furnace Park in Alburtis (Lehigh County). Interment private at the convenience of the family. Minerva Bush Fisher Slutter, 88, of Bonita Springs, Fla., died September 28, 1998 at a local nursing home.
Mrs. Slutter had been a resident of Bonita Springs, Fla., since 1971 coming from East Stroudsburg.
Mrs. Slutter was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Bonita Springs, Fla. Minerva is survived by her husband, Earl J. Slutter of Bonita Springs, Fla.; three sons , Roger E. Slutter of Brodheadsville, Ronald J. Slutter of Yukon, Okla., and Regis E. Slutter of Alexandrea, Va.; a daughter, Mrs. Jane S. Seliga of Toledo, Ohio; and ten grandchildren.
Memorial services for Mrs. Slutter will be Thursday, Oct. 1, 1998 at the First Presbyterian Church of Bonita Springs., Fla., with Rev. Paul Kirbas, pastor officiating. Burial will be in the church gardens.

Joseph W. Rettenmyer, 91, of Scotrun, formerly of Wilkes-Barre and Ashley, died Tuesday at Department of Veteran Affairs Medical Center, Plains Township.
Born July 20, 1907 in Pittston, he resided in Ashley for most of his life.
He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II.
Prior to retirement in 1971, he was employed by the Veterans Administration Medical Center of Plains Township.
He was a member of St. Leo's church, Manhattan Street, Ashley, and American Legion Post 623 in Ashley.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Murray Rettenmyer.
Surviving are a son, Jerry Rettenmyer of Scotrun; three grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. from McLaughlin Funeral Service, 142 S. Washington Street, Wilkes-Barre with Funeral Mass at 11 a.m. in St. Leo's Church. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hanover Township.
Friends may call Friday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
