Cecelia Miller Schroeder

September 11, 1998

Cecelia Miller Schroeder, 90, of Stroudsburg, died Friday in the Pocono Medical Center, East Stroudsburg. She was the wife of William Schroeder Jr. at home.

Born on May 4, 1908 in Resica Falls, she was the daughter of the late Clarence and Mary (London) Miller and had lived in the area all of her life. She and her husband had worked together for Schroeders Awning and Upholstery for the last forty years.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by over ninety direct descendants including seven daughters , Joy Lambert of East Stroudsburg, Ruth Ann Paffenroth, wife of Hartley of Oneonta, N.Y., Bonnie Serfass, wife of Richard of Stroudsburg, Betty Kresge, wife of Nathan of Saylorsburg, Dorothy Legg, wife of James of Whittier, Calif., Janet DePue, wife of Mark of Bartonsville, and Charlotte Warnick, wife of Charles of Belvidere, N.J.; four sons , Garnold Cramer of Aspers, Kenneth Cramer, husband of Janet of Gettysburg, James Cramer of Aspers and Dale Cramer, husband of Beverly of Stroudsburg; two step daughters , Bonnie Houck of Stroudsburg and Joan Hill of Washington , D.C.; 29 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a daughter, J. Arlene Martz; two sons , Paul Cramer and Gerald Cramer; and a stepson, William R. Schroeder.

Funeral services will be held on Monday at 11:30 a.m. at the William H. Clark Funeral Home, , with Rev. Thomas E. Richards Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in the Laurelwood Cemetery, Stroudsburg.

There will be a viewing on Monday from 10:30 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home.

Marinus L. Westerhuis

Sept. 12, 1998

Marinus L. Westerhuis, 78, of Saylorsburg, died early Saturday morning in the Pocono Medical Center, East Stroudsburg. He was the husband of Ans (Woldendorp) Westerhuis to whom he had been married for more than 50 years.

Born on April 9, 1920 in Leeuwarden, Netherlands, he was the son of the late Evert and Cato (Poestkoke) Westerhuis. After almost 40 years with KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, 17 years in the New York office, he retired and moved to the Poconos in 1986. He was an Elder of the First Presbyterian Church of Stroudsburg, an emergency medical technician volunteer for the West End Ambulance and also was a volunteer for the American Cancer Society Road to Recovery Program.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters , Jacoba J. Maltby of Katy, Texas , Marian Westerhuis of Laurel, Md., and Renee Greenfield of Glen Allen, Va.; and five grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Monday in the William H. Clark Funeral Home, 1003 Main St., Stroudsburg, with the Rev. Carol Brown officiating. Private inurnment will be in the Mountainview Mausoleum, East Stroudsburg.

There will be a closed casket visitation on Monday from 3 p.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the West End Ambulance Corps, Gilbert Road, Box 200, Effort, PA 18330 or to the American Cancer Society, R.R. 2, Box 2138, Stroudsburg, PA 18360.

Lawrence H. Dickison

Sept. 11, 1998

Lawrence H. Dickison, 72, of Bushkill, died on Friday, Sept. 11, at his home. He was the husband of Freda (Howey) Dickison, at home.

He was born in Dingmans Ferry, a son of the late Frank and Kathryn (Wilson) Dickison. He had been a resident of Pike County for all of his lifetime. He was of the Methodist faith. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during World War II.

Prior to his retirement in 1990, he was employed by the former Unity House as a maintenance man for 12 years. Prior to that he was a carpenter for several local builders for many years. He was a life member and past fire chief of the Bushkill Fire Company; a member of the Thomas P. Lambert Post 2540, Veterans of Foreign Wars of East Stroudsburg; the Four County Firemans Association; the Monroe County Bowlers Association; and a life member of the Laurel Hill Rod and Gun Club.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters , Matilda J. Dickison of Reeders and JoAnn Johnson of Stroudsburg; three sons , Frank A. Dickison of Quanah, Texas , and Fred A. Dickison and Jack D. Dickison, both of Bushkill; three sisters , Mildred Whittaker and Edna Haag, both of East Stroudsburg, and Dorothy Post of Wind Gap; three brothers , Robert Dickison, Raymond Dickison and Harold Dickison, all of Dingmans Ferry; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 15, at 1:30 p.m. in the Lanterman & Allen Funeral Home, , with the Rev. Raymond Poortstra officiating.

Interment will be in the Sand Hill Cemetery, Shoemakers. Relatives and friends may pay their respects on Tuesday from 12:30 p.m. until the time of the services.

At the request of the family, memorial donations may be made to the Lehigh Valley Hospice, 1273 N. Ninth St., Stroudsburg.

Sept. 14, 1998

Betty Harkins, 70, of Paradise Falls Lutheran Association, Paradise Township, died Monday evening in the Pocono Medical Center, East Stroudsburg. She was the wife of Jack V. Harkins, at home, with whom she had celebrated 51 years of marriage.

Born on March 5, 1928, in Mount Union, she was a daughter of the late Charles and Maxine Bott and had lived in Morton during her childhood years. She and her husband lived in Delaware County for many years, coming to Paradise Falls part-time for the past 45 years and moving there permanently 12 years ago.

She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Tannersville.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a daughter, Beverly Picard of Dumfries, Va.; two sons , Steve Harkins of Lake Naomi, and Guy Harkins of Joppa, Md.; a sister, Virginia Webb of Delaware County; nine grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, Sept. 19 at 4 p.m. from St. Paul Lutheran Church, Fish Hill Road, Tannersville, with the Rev. Thomas E. Richards Jr. officiating. Cremation will take place in the H.G. Smith Crematory, Stroudsburg.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Memorial Fund of St. Paul Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 196, Tannersville, PA 18372 or to the American Cancer Society-Monroe County, R.R. 2, Box 2138, Stroudsburg, PA 18360.

Dorothy Groover Burnett

September 15, 1998

Dorothy Groover Burnett, 79, of St. Augustine, Fla., died Sept. 15, 1998, at Flagler Hospital. She moved to St. Augustine, Fla., in 1994 from Stroudsburg.

She was born in Washington , D.C. She graduated from Camp Hill High School, Class of '37, in Camp Hill. She was a member of the Memorial Presbyterian Church.

She is survived by two sons , Earl Burnett and Eugene Burnett, III, both of Jacksonville, Fla.; one daughter, Ann V. Burnett of New Cumberland; and 4 grandchildren.

Private services will be held.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make contributions in her memory please send donations to the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind, 207 North San Marco Avenue, St. Augustine, Fla. 32084.

Sept. 18, 1998

Joan Briggs, 68, of Stroudsburg died Friday, Sept. 18, in the Pocono Medical Center, East Stroudsburg. She was the widow of George Briggs, who died in 1981.

Born in the Bronx, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Lawrence and Anna (Farrell) Dixon. She was a resident of the Stroudsburg area for the past 40 years, and prior to that she lived in the Bronx, N.Y., area.

She was employed at the former General Electric Co. of East Stroudsburg for 20 years, retiring in 1992.

She was a member of St. Luke's Roman Catholic Church of Stroudsburg and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2540, East Stroudsburg, and the American Legion Post 346, East Stroudsburg. She was also a Gray Lady at the Pocono Medical Center for many years.

She is survived by a son, Robert M. Briggs of Bartonsville, two grandchildren and a brother, Thomas Dixon of Bethel, Conn. She was preceded in death by a son, Lawrence A. Briggs, who died in 1984.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, Sept. 22, at 10:30 a.m. from St. Luke's Roman Catholic Church of Stroudsburg, with the Rev. Thomas D. McLaughlin as celebrant. Burial will be in the Gate of Heaven section of Laurelwood Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 21, at the Joseph J. Pula Funeral Home, 23 N. Ninth St., Stroudsburg.

September 20, 1998

Gloria M. Cook 65, of RR 4 Hazleton, died Sunday in her home.

She was the wife of Harry P. Cook at home. They had observed their 34th wedding anniversary in August. She was also the wife of the late John Knecht.

Born in Long Pond, she was a daughter of the late Harry and Ada (Keiper) Meckes.

She was a member of the Lattimer Methodist Church in Lattimer.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by three sons , Christopher Knecht of Neola, Daniel Knecht of Hazleton, and Dale Knecht of Drums; two daughters , Rosemary Bolderson of Hazleton and Mary Louise Cook of Freeland; four brothers , Thomas and Claude Meckes, both of Long Pond, Miles Meckes of Wilkes-Barre and Dewey Meckes of Neola; two sisters , Claire Binkley of Scotrun and Gymane Bush of East Stroudsburg; eleven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Connie M. Knecht.

Funeral services will be held at 8 p.m. on Wednesday from the Kresge Funeral Home, Route 209, Brodheadsville. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in Long Pond Cemetery. A viewing will be held on Wednesday from 7 p.m. until the time of the service.

September 21, 1998

Elizabeth L. Tullo, 61, of East Stroudsburg, died on Monday morning, September 21, at her home. She was the wife of Michael Tullo Sr. at home.

She was born in Goshen, N.Y., a daughter of Elizabeth L. (Bell) Sherman of East Stroudsburg and the late Robert Sherman. She had been a resident of Monroe County for the past 20 years and prior to that of Port Morris, N.J. She was a member of the Calvary Chapel of Stroudsburg.

She was formerly employed by the Salvation Army Thrift Store in East Stroudsburg.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by four sons , Michael Tullo Jr. of Bangor; Thomas Tullo of Spring Hill, Fla.; Anthony Tullo of Fort Worth, and Texas ; Bryan Tullo at home; a sister, Deanne Kaiser of Dewey, Ariz.; two brothers , Robert Sherman of Blairstown, N.J., and Charles Sherman of Walden, N.Y.; 10 grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, September 23 at 1:30 p.m. in the Lanterman & Allen Funeral Home, 27 Washington Street, East Stroudsburg, with Dr. William Ammon officiating.

Interment will be in the Prospect Cemetery, East Stroudsburg. There will be no viewing.

At the request of the family, memorial donations may be made to the Lehigh Valley Hospice, 1273 N. 9th Street, Stroudsburg, PA 18360.

Evelyn Lloyd, 86, of Stroudsburg, died on Sunday, September 20, at the Laurel Manor in Stroudsburg. She was the wife of the late Roy F. Lloyd.

She was born in East Stroudsburg, a daughter of the late Norman and Sabina Titus. She was a life long member of the First Baptist Church in East Stroudsburg.

She was employed by Bell Telephone Company as a operator for over 30 years. She was a member of the Pocono Telephone Pioneers.

She is survived by 2 nephews, Harry a Lloyd of Stroudsburg and Carl "Skip" Titus of East Stroudsburg.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, September 23, at 11 a.m. in the Lanterman & Allen Funeral Home, 27 Washington Street, East Stroudsburg, with the Rev. David Cornell officiating.

Interment will be in the Prospect Cemetery, East Stroudsburg. Relatives and friends may pay their respects on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.

At the request of the family, in lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the First Baptist Church, North Courtland Street, East Stroudsburg.

William F. (Beany) Sanders, 75, of Stroudsburg, died on Monday at Pocono Medical Center, East Stroudsburg. He was the husband of Mary (Lesik) Sanders, with whom he had celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary last October.

Born in Bangor, he was the son of the late Edwin and Edith (Hinton) Sanders.

He was a 1940 graduate of Stroudsburg High School.

He worked for Sears, Roebuck and Co. as the Automotive Manager, for 33 years, retiring in 1985.

He was a member of the Stroudsburg United Methodist Church.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters , Bonnie Cramsey of Stroudsburg and Carol Decker of Stroudsburg; a brother, John Sanders of Pottstown; and 3 grandchildren, Kiersten, Danielle and Bill.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 25 at 11 a.m. from the Thomas Funeral Home, 401 North Fifth Street, Stroudsburg, with the Rev. Thomas Anderman and Rev. George S. Rigby Jr. officiating. Burial will take place at Delaware Water Gap Cemetery.

A viewing will be held on Thursday evening from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Funeral Home.

Memorial donations should be made to the Stroudsburg United Methodist Church, 547 Main Street, Stroudsburg, PA 18360.

September 22, 1998

Francis A. Martin Sr., 78, of Appenzell, died Tuesday, Sept. 22 at his home.

Born in Bethlehem, he was the son of the late Thomas and Mae (Hardenstine) Martin.

He was a life long resident of the Appenzell/Reeders area. He was employed as a ground hand with the Pennsylvania Power & Light Company of Stroudsburg for 41 years, retiring in 1983.

He was a member of the McMichaels Hunting Club and was a member of the V.F.W. Post #2540 in East Stroudsburg, having served in the Army during World War II. He was also caretaker for The Trout Lake of Reeders for many years.

He is survived by three daughters , Mary Silvoy of Bethlehem, Ann Singer of Reeders, and Margaret Martin of Long Pond; four sons , Francis A. Martin Jr. and David R. Martin, both of Appenzell, James A. Martin of Lake Naomi and Ronald C. Martin of Scranton; a brother, Milton Martin of Coopersburg; a sister, Isabelle Reed of Bethlehem; 11 grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, Sept. 25 at 11 a.m. from the Joseph J. Pula Funeral Home, 23 North Ninth Street, Stroudsburg, with the Rev. Peter Unger officiating. Entombment will be in the Mountainview Mausoleum in East Stroudsburg. Visitation will be on Thursday evening, Sept. 24, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
