June 9, 1998

Katie E. Staples, 75, of Stroudsburg died Tuesday in the Pocono Medical Center, East Stroudsburg. She was the widow of George D. Staples who died in 1986.

Born in East Stroudsburg, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Anna (Counterman) Bogert. She was a lifelong resident of the East Stroudsburg area and was of the Protestant Faith.

She is survived by a daughter, Sylvia Staples of Snydersville; two sons , George Staples, Jr., of Stroudsburg and Spencer Staples of Fayetteville, N.C.; two sisters , Charlotte Fish of Marshalls Creek and Nettie Geisler of Stroudsburg; 11 grandchildren including Stacey Getz and Heather Staples; and several great grandchildren including Felicia and Rebecca Getz, Craig Kunkle and Jennifer Hull.

Funeral Services will be held on Thursday evening at 7:30 p.m. at the Joseph J. Pula Funeral Home, 23 N. 9th Street, Stroudsburg, with the Rev. Raymond Poorstra officiating.

Burial will be on Friday in the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville, Pa.

Visitation will be on Thursday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

George P. Longridge

June 8, 1998

George P. Longridge, 66, of Effort died on Monday at home. He was the husband of Margaret (Whalen) Longridge. They were married for thirty years.

Born on August 23, 1931, in Glasgow, Scotland, he was a son of the late Warnock and Jean (McCorkle) Longridge. He moved to the United States in 1967.

He was a professional soccer player and coach in Europe for 23 years. The highlight of his career came in 1950 when he starred in goal for Scotland's national team in a 3-2 victory over England. After retiring from professional soccer in Europe, he played and coached semi-professionally in Canada and New Jersey. When he moved to the Poconos, he continued his involvement with soccer. During the 1980s, he was a pioneer in the development of youth soccer by starting the first league and the first traveling team in the West End. He also coached Pleasant Valley's JV team for a year before his retirement from coaching.

He owned and operated Longridge Plumbing and Heating for 25 years before retiring in 1996.

He was a member of Effort United Methodist Church.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, George M. Longridge of Effort; two daughters , Jane Stone of Brodheadsville and Christine Longridge of West Pittston; two brothers , Tom Longridge of Glouscester, England, and William Longridge of Glasgow, Scotland; and a granddaughter, Erin Stone.

Funeral Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday from the Effort United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Edward Kimes officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Effort. A viewing will be held on Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. from the Kresge Funeral Home, Route 209, Brodheadsville.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either the Effort United Methodist Church, Box 30, Effort, PA 18330 or to Lehigh Valley Hospice, 1273 N. Ninth Street, Stroudsburg, PA l8360.

Shirley M. Murray

June 8, l998

Shirley M. Murray, 84, of Mt. Pocono, died Monday in the Brookmont Nursing Home, Chestnuthill Township. She was the wife of the late William J. Murray.

Born on January 16, 1914 in Pocono Lake, she was the daughter of the late Ervin and Anna (Radkey) Keiper and had lived in the area all of her life. She was a retired technician from National Drug Co., now Connaught Laboratories in Swiftwater.

She was a member of the Pocono Mountain Volunteer Fire Co. Auxiliary and the Mt. Pocono United Methodist Church.

She is survived by three nieces, Shirley A. Lansdowne and Wanda Altemose, both of Mt. Pocono and Harriet Franks of Pocono Lake; a nephew, Harvey Keiper of Bowmanstown; and several great nieces and nephews. She was as preceded in death by a sister, Arvilla Bisbing and three brothers , Russell Keiper, Harvey Keiper and Lloyd Keiper.

Graveside memorial services will be held on Saturday at 1 p.m. in the Laurelwood Cemetery, Stroudsburg, with the Rev. John E. Charnock, Jr., officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Mt. Pocono United Methodist Church, 12 Church Avenue, Mt. Pocono, PA 18344.

Gerald Ariel Snyder

June 7, 1998

Gerald Ariel Snyder, 72 of Joppa, Md., died in his residence, June 7, 1998.

Born in East Stroudsburg, he was the son of the late Oscar Bernarr, Sr., and Leah Helen Fisher Snyder.

He was retired from the Pennsylvania State Education Association where he worked as the Director of Retirement. He was a 33rd Degree Mason of the J. Africa Simpson Masonic Lodge in East Stroudsburg, and was a life member of the NEA, PSEA, and NJEA. He was a member of the Gunpowder Hundred Church of the Resurrection and a member of the Shrine Club in Venice, Fla. He loved gardening, flying, hunting deer, reading and boating.

He served his country in the Army Air Force during WWII.

Mr. Snyder is survived by his wife, Kathleen Rose Schlough Snyder of Joppa, Md.; two daughters , Susan Elizabeth Good of Langhorne, Pa., and Linda Diane Schober of Sewickley, Pa.; one brother, Oscar B. Snyder, Jr., of South Lake Tahoe, Calif.; two sisters , Doris Rosemary Stampone of Wilmington, Del. and Janet Romaine Corrado of North Port. N.Y.; and two grandchildren, Larry Joseph Good III of Langhorne, Pa., and Alexander Victor Schober of Sewickley, Pa.

Services will be held at the Church of the Resurrection in Joppa, Md., Sat., at 12 noon with Rev. Alfred F. Laveroni officiating. Interment will be in Prospect Cemetery in East Stroudsburg.

John Bzik

June 10, 1998

John Bzik, 74, of East Stroudsburg died Wednesday in Stroud Manor, East Stroudsburg. He was the husband of Mary F. (Frank) Bzik of East Stroudsburg. The couple celebrated their 48th wedding anniversary this past June 7.

Born in Nanticoke, he was the son of the late Michael and Rose (Skrut) Bzik. He was a resident of Monroe County for the last 31 years.

He was a Mathematics Professor at East Stroudsburg University for 25 years before retiring in 1991. Prior to that he was a Mathematics Professor at Bloomsburg State Teachers College, now Bloomsburg University, from 1962 to 1966. He also taught High School and Jr. High School in the Abington School District, Montgomery Co., from 1958 to 1962.

He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, East Stroudsburg.

He was a player and coach for the Ice hockey Club at East Stroudsburg University and for the Army Depot hockey Team in Tobyhanna. He also coached basketball at Bloomsburg University.

He received a Masters Degree in Mathematics from South Carolina University in 1962, a Bachelors Degree in Mathematics and Secondary Education from Millersville University, Millersville, in 1957, and received an additional degree in education from Penn State University in 1969.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by 3 sons , Thomas J. Bzik of Allentown, David J. Bzik of Grantham, N.H., and Edward P. Bzik of Boalsburg; 2 brothers , Steve Bzik of Totowa, N.J., and Frank Bzik of Sacramento, Calif.; 4 grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in the Lanterman & Allen Funeral Home, , with the Rev. Phyllis Hammel officiating.

A visitation will take place on Saturday from 12:30 p.m. until the time of the service in the funeral home. Interment will take place in Stroudsburg Cemetery.

James P. Kiernan

June 12, 1998

James P. Kiernan, 77, of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, died Friday morning in the Bougainvilla Hospice, Ft. Lauderdale.

Born on July 13, 1920, in New York, NY, he was a son of the late Bernard and Anna (Walsh) Kiernan, and had lived most of his life in New York City until moving to Ft. Lauderdale eight years ago.

He was the aquatic director of the YMCA in Flushing, NY and was also a veteran of the United States Army, having served during World War II in the Pacific.

He was a coach being named to the Swimming Hall of Fame in Ft. Lauderdale, was a certified scuba diver and a member of the American Legion in Ft. Lauderdale.

Surviving are a brother and sister-in-law, Michael and Peg Kiernan, of Henryville; a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Kiernan, of Norristown, PA; five nephews, two nieces; three great nephews; and eight great nieces. He was predeceased by a brother, John Kiernan.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday at 11 a.m. at the Our Lady of Victory Roman Catholic Church, Route 611, Tannersville with the Rev. Henry E. Zapotocki as celebrant. Burial will follow in Laurelwood Cemetery, Stroudsburg.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice Care of Broward County, 309 SE 18th Street, Ft. Lauderdale, FL 33316.

Carl C. Geohringer

June 13, 1998

Carl G. Geohringer, 94, of East Stroudsburg, died Saturday evening at his home. He was the husband of Gloria Barbara "Bobby" (Gagliardi) Geohringer, at home.

Born on April 20, 1904, in Harrisburg, he was the son of the late Charles and Katie (Falter) Geohringer. He had attended the Harrisburg Technical High School graduating in 1927 from the Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis, Minn. Also in the 1920s, he managed the Red Dragons Industrial League baseball team. He had lived in the Bergen County, N.J., area for 38 years. He was also a self-employed ceramic tile contractor.

He was a member of the Tech Golden Legion for 37 years and the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen for over 60 years.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Rachel (Goodyear) Geohringer in 1968 and a daughter, Nancy Geohringer in 1935.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 2 p.m. in the William H. Clark Funeral Home, , with Father Thomas Sokolowski and Rev. Thomas E. Richards Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in the Prospect Cemetery, East Stroudsburg.

There will be visitation on Thursday from 12:30 p.m. until the time of service at the funeral home.

Ralph H. Christman

June 13, 1998

Ralph H. Christman, 69, of Delevan, N.Y., formerly of East Stroudsburg, died on Saturday, June 13, 1998, in Bertrand Chaffee Hospital, Springville, N.Y. He was the husband of Annalee (Bittner) Christman, at home. They were married May 29, 1969, in Moscow, Pa.

Born in East Stroudsburg, he was a son of the late William and Mildred (Smith) Christman. A resident of Delevan, N.Y., his former residences include Factoryville and East Stroudsburg.

He was employed as a school teachers in Factoryville for one year before moving to Delevan, N.Y. where he taught physical education at Delevan Elementary School for the Pioneer School District until his retirement in 1992.

He was a graduate of East Stroudsburg University with a B.S. degree in physical education. He coached football at Delevan-Machias and Pioneer Central High Schools in Yorkshire, N.Y., and was assistant coach for one year at Franklinville High School and St. Bonaventure University in Allegany, N.Y.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving from 1947 to 1951. He was a member of the George N. Kemp American Legion Post in East Stroudsburg and the VFW Post in Franklinville, N.Y. He was also a member of the N.Y. Retired Teachers Association and a member of Blessed Sacrament Church in Delevan, N.Y.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Michael Christman of Charlotte, N.C., a daughter, Lynn Yacker of New Hope, three step-children, Leanne McDonough of Cheektowaga, N.Y. Jerelyn Martin of Kincheloe, Mich., and David McDonough of West Valley, N.Y., a sister, Rosanne Evans of Stroudsburg, a brother, William Christman of Etowah, Tenn.; three grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, June 17, 1998, at 1:30 p.m. in Lanterman & Allen Funeral Home, with Father Thomas Sokolowski officiating.

There will be a viewing on Wednesday from 12:30 p.m. until the time of service at Lanterman & Allen.

Committal will take place in Stroudsburg Cemetery, Stroudsburg.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Delevan Rescue Squad, 85 South Main St., Delevan N.Y., 14042.

Michael T. Paszkowski

June 14, 1998

Michael T. Paszkowski, 49, of East Stroudsburg, died on Sunday, June 14, at the Lehigh Valley Hospital in Salisbury Township. He was the husband of Diane (Kaleida) Paszkowski, at home.

He was born in Scranton, a son of the late Stanley and Anna (Tanchyn) Paszkowski. He was a member of St. Matthew's Catholic Church of East Stroudsburg and a resident of Monroe County for the past 24 years.

He was an East Stroudsburg University Administrator and Assistant Dean of Students. He was employed by East Stroudsburg University for the past 24 years. He was a member of the Pennsylvania National Guard and a Major for the State Area Command at Fort Indiantown Gap. He was on active duty during Desert Shield in Bremerhaven Germany from November 1990 until January 1991 and he rewrote the Counterterrorism Plan for Northern German and was the Coordinator of the resultant Counterterrorism Exercise which took place.

He was a councilman for the 4th Ward of East Stroudsburg Borough serving for the past 15 years. He was a Republican Committeeman. He was a member and past treasurer of the Stroudsburg Kiwanis Club.

He was a graduate of the University of Scranton in 1970 with a degree in History; he received his Master's Degree in Political Science in 1977 from East Stroudsburg University and a Masters of Arts and Counseling in 1982 from Marywood University. He was an honor graduate of the Command and General Officers Staff Course in 1993, this is a 3 year course.

In addition to his wife he is survived by a brother, Paul S. Paszkowski of Scranton and his two best friends, his dogs Toby and Cinder.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, June 20, at 9:30 a.m. in St. Matthew's Catholic Church in East Stroudsburg with Father Thomas Sokolowski as the celebrant.

Cremation will take place in the Arlington Crematory in White hall. Burial will be at a later date in Fort Indiantown Gap National Cemetery.

There will be a visitation on Friday evening from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Lanterman & Allen Funeral Home, .

At the request of the family, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, Monroe Unit, R.R. #2, Box 2138, Stroudsburg, PA. 18360.
