Lynn Harris
April 29, 1998
Local jazz pianist Lynn Harris was more than an artist and musician. He was a fighter, too.
"You have no idea how much he fought to stay alive," his widow, Judith, said Thursday, the day after a long battle with cancer finally proved too much. "Lynn would never give in to anyone."
Harris, a well-known performer and teacher, was active until the last day of his life.
Wednesday morning, he gave his usual music lesson to a student at Marywood University, took a ride in the country and then died quietly at home.
Last weekend, he was on-stage for his regular Saturday night gig at the posh Skytop Lodge in the Poconos.
Longtime friend and associate Doug Smith of Scranton marvels that Harris preserved, playing piano with one hand after breaking his right arm several weeks ago.
Music, both performing and teaching, was Harris' life. His regular schedule included up to 65 students a week. Even his oncologist took lessons from him.
"He was a totally dedicated professional,' Smith said. "He would play as many jobs as he could, even if he only had five minutes to get from one gig to another."
"He was determined to play to the last moment," said Harris' son, local dance instructor Sean Harris of Kingston. "Even though he was in pain, he felt at home behind the piano."
"My Father really was a legend," Sean Harris continued. "I'm not speaking just as a son but as a lover of music. He was a phenomenal performer...It's hard to talk about him in the past tense."
Harris, 55, had been scheduled to perform this Sunday at the Cherry Blossom Festival at Kirby park.
And though the showman has passed on, the show will go on. Smith and members of Harris' Jazz All-Stars — R.J. Kennedy, on drums, Doug Smith on bass, Tara Watkins as vocalist and Mark Morris on trumpet with Marko Marcinko on piano — will perform in Harris' memory from 1 to 1:45 p.m. The performance is likely to include some of Harris' original compositions.
Judith Harris will be there despite her tears.
"Lynn and I never missed a gig," she said.
Born and reared in Pittston, Lynn R. Harris lived in Exeter the past 10 years. He was a son of the late Thomas J. and Auriel Jane Bortone Harris and a graduate of Pittston High School.
A well-known pianist, vocalist and educator, he was recently named to the national trade journal. "Who's Who Among Executives, Professionals and Educators."
He was on the faculty of the music department at Marywood University in Scranton and founded the Lynn Harris Piano Conservatory and Kinder Keyboards for Preschoolers.
He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church of Montgomery Avenue, West Pittston, and held the positions of organist and choir director at the First Congregational Church, on Luzerne Avenue.
Surviving are his wife of 10 years, Judith Matthews Harris; children: Kenton of Florida; Lynn Jr. of Shavertown; Sean of Kingston; Kelly of Germany; Jason and Shayne, both of Plains Township; one granddaughter in Germany; stepchildren: Joey and Joan (Sissy) of Florida; Al and Jeff, both of Plains Township; a sister, Linda Kulick of Hop Bottom; nieces and nephews. Lynn Harris will never be forgotten Thank God for Lynn Harris.
