Frank J. Bolock, Sr.

February 24, 1998

Frank J. Bolock, Sr., of Park Gardens, formerly of Luzerne Street, Scranton, died unexpectedly Tuesday upon arrival at Community Medical Center. His widow is the former Pauline Carroll. They had been married for 45 years.

Born in Scranton, he was a son of the late George and Elizabeth Almadi Horvath Bolock. He was a graduate of Johnson School of Technology and was an Army veteran.

He worked as a tool and dye maker at Trane Co., Dunmore, until his retirement in 1990.

He was a member of St. Patrick's Church, West Scranton, and its Holy Name Society, Sloan Seniors, the Trane Bowling League and the American Legion Post #209.

During the 1950's, he was a pitcher in the Scranton Baseball Association for St. Stevens and the Marvin teams. An avid sports enthusiast and golfer, he scored a hole in one in 1992 at the Emanon Country Club, where he was a member.

He is also survived by three sons , Attorney Frank Bolock, Jr., Waverly, Paul Bolock of Mechanicsburg, and Michael Bolock of Tannersville; seven grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, James, and three brothers , Andrew Bolock, Sr., Julius and Ernest Horvath.

The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. from the Davies and Jones Funeral Chapel, 135 S. Main Avenue, Scranton. Father Leonard will celebrate a Mass at 11:30 a.m. in St. Patrick's Church, Jackson Street, Scranton. Interment will be at Cathedral Cemetery. Friends may call on Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

Henry C. Vanderah

February 25, 1998

Henry C. Vanderah, 81, of Effort died Wednesday at the Brookmont Health Care Center in Effort.

He was the husband of the late Helen (Buti) Vanderah who died in 1997.

He was the son of the late Henry and Josephine (Kopel) Vanderah.

He was a Fire Fighter and Guard for General Services Administration in Edison, N.J., for over 20 years retiring in 1965.

He was a member of Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Gilbert. He was an Army World War II veteran.

He is survived by a son, Henry A. Vanderah of Saylorsburg; 1 sister, Norma Polly of Haverhill, Iowa; 3 brothers , Arthur, Victor and Vincent Vanderah, all of Haverhill, Iowa; 3 grandchildren, Dawn Vanderah of Jamesburg, N.J., Elisa Vanderah and Ryan Vanderah, both of Saylorsburg; and 1 great granddaughter, Taylor Pullizano.

Funeral services will begin at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, at the Donald N. Gower Funeral Home, Inc. Route 209, Gilbert. Followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Gilbert with the Rev. Father William McCawley celebrant. Interment will follow in the Van Liew Cemetery, North Brunswick, N.J. Viewing will be 7 to 9 p.m., Friday, at the funeral home.

Mrs. Joseph B. Conahan, Sr.

February 25, 1998

Mrs. Joseph B. Conahan Sr., of 1400 E. Broad Street, Hazleton, died very unexpectedly Wednesday afternoon at Lehigh Valley Hospital, Allentown.

Born in Hazleton, she was the daughter of the late Leo and Pauline (Andes) McHugh.

She was a graduate of Hazleton High School and Chestnut Hill College. Prior to her marriage, she taught at D.A. Harman Junior High School. She was a member of St. Gabriel's Church and the Women's Guild of the parish. She was a former member of the Valley Country Club. She was an avid student of the culinary arts.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, the former mayor of Hazleton, the Honorable Joseph B. Conahan and one brother, Leo McHugh. She is survived by the following children: Dr. Joseph B., Jr., of Stroudsburg, Dr. Francis J., of Milton, Mass., Attorney Paula DeJoseph, wife of Attorney Daniel DeJoseph, of Conyngham, Mrs. James (Elizabeth) Oldham of Washington , D.C., Honorable Michael T., of Hazleton, Mrs. Frank (Ann Marie) Vita, of Philadelphia, Thomas J., of Dumont, N.J., Mrs. Donald (Therese) Tedesco of Hazleton, and Dr. James B., of Denver, Col.; 16 grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. from the Joseph B. Conahan Funeral Home with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. Gabriel's Church followed by burial in the parish cemetery.

Friends may call at the Joseph B. Conahan Funeral Home, 532 N. Vine St., Hazleton, Friday, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

L. Thomas Mackes

February 24, 1998

L. Thomas Mackes, 55, of R.R. 2, Saylorsburg, died Tuesday in the University of PA Hospital, Philadelphia.

He was the husband of Patricia A. (Rittenhouse) Mackes, at home. They had celebrated their 31st wedding anniversaries in May of 1997.

Born in Palmerton, he was a son of Marian M. (Griffith) Mackes of Effort and the late Lloyd D. Mackes.

A 1960 graduate of Chestnuthill High School, he was the shop foreman for Selig Construction in Pocono Lake for the past 19 years.

He was a member of Zion United Lutheran Church in Brodheadsville.

He was a charter member of the Western Pocono Jaycees and he was one of the organizers of Boy Scout Troop 102 in Saylorsburg. He had also served as the assistant scout master for that troop.

In addition to his wife and mother , he is survived by two sons , Robert T. Mackes of White hall and Daniel L. Mackes at home; a sister, Nancy Everett of Gilbert; a niece, Nicole Mattfeld in New Jersey; and a nephew, Brett Everett of Gilbert.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday from Zion United Lutheran Church in Brodheadsville with the Rev. William Zimmermann officiating. Calling hours will be held on Sunday from 1 to 2 p.m. in the church. There will be no viewing.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to one of the following: the West End Ambulance Assn., Effort, Pa 18330; Zion United Lutheran Church, HCR 1, Box 4, Brodheadsville, PA 18322; or the Western Pocono Community Library, P.O. Box 318, Brodheadsville, PA 18322.

Charles Jaeger

February 23, 1998

Charles Jaeger, 74, of Effort, formerly of Roxbury Twp., New Jersey, died Monday at the Pocono Medical Center in East Stroudsburg.

He was the husband of Sophie Faye (Kennedy) Jaeger. They had been married 46 years.

Born in New York City, N.Y., he was the son of the late Charles Phillip and Jessie (Schwenterlee) Jaeger.

He had been a school teacher at the Roxbury Twp. School District in Ledgewood, N.J. for 35 years.

He was an Army World War II Veteran.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Stroudsburg.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by 2 sons , Clifford Jaeger of Glen Gardner, N.J. and Carl Jaeger of Effort; 1 daughter, Charlene wife of Thomas Preisel of New York, N.Y.; 1 brother, Robert Jaeger of Ocala, Fla.

There will be no service at this time. The Donald N. Gower Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Edith E. Leslie

February 23, 1998

Edith E. Leslie, 88, of Honesdale, died Monday in St. Luke's Hospital, Fountain Hill.

She was the wife of the late Vernon E. Leslie.

Born in Honesdale, she was a daughter of the late Frank S. and Hilda (Rundel) Evans.

She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Honesdale and was a devoted wife and mother . She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Honesdale.

She is survived by a daughter, Karlyn L. Shedlowski of RD 6 Stroudsburg and by two granddaughters, Liana L. and Kirby-Lynn Shedlowski.

Memorial services will be held at the convenience of the family from the Arthur A. Bryant Funeral Home, Honesdale. Interment will be in Bethany Cemetery. There will be no viewing.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, NE Chapter, Kirby Health Center Annex, 71 N. Franklin St., Wilkes Barre, PA 18701.

Raymond F. Lang

February 22, 1998

Raymond F. Lang, 85, of Stroudsburg, died Sunday in the Florida Hospital, Orlando, Florida. He was the husband of Erma (Kopatz) Lang, at home.

Born in New York City, N.Y., he was the son of the late Mr. & Mrs. George Lang. He was a resident of Stroudsburg for the past 23 years and prior to that lived in the Staten Island, N.Y., area. He was retired from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York having been a banker there for 40 years, retiring in 1972.

He was a member of St. Luke's Roman Catholic Church of Stroudsburg and was an Army Veteran of WWII.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Janet Sheehn, of Fairfield, N.J.; a granddaughter and a grandson.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, March 2, 10 a.m., from St. Luke's Roman Catholic Church, Stroudsburg, with the Rev. Father Carmen Perry as celebrant. Burial will be in the Laurelwood Cemetery.

Visitation will be on Sunday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Joseph J. Pula Funeral Home, , and on Monday from 9 a.m. until the time of the Mass at the Church.

May 5, 1998

Byron E. Long, 67 of Blakeslee died Tuesday at his home.

He was the husband of Bernadette (Prior) Long. They had been married 37 years.

Born in Coplay, Pa., he was the son of the late Raymond and Mabel (Haas) Long.

He operated Byron Long Realty on Route 115 in Blakeslee for 24 years. He was a Real Estate Broker and a State Certified Appraiser.

He was a graduate of Coplay High School and Moravian College.

He was a veteran of the United States Army having served during the Korean Conflict.

He was a member of the Pocono Mountain Association of Realtors. He was a member of the Top-O-Pocono Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow. He was a past president of the Berwick Rotary Club in Berwick, Pa.; a past president of the Chamber of Commerce in Berwick. He was also a past member of the Pocono Mountain Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the Tobyhanna Twp. Volunteer Fire Co.He was a member of the American Legion Post 314 and its Home Association in Lehighton, Pa.

He was a member of the Chapman Lodge #637 F. & A.M. in Northampton. He was a 32nd Degree Mason. He was a member of Allen #20 Knights Temple of Allentown, the Rajah Temple of Reading, Pa., the Siegfried Royal Arch Chapter #295 in Northampton, Pa.

In addition to his wife, Bernadette, he is survived by one son, Kevin R. Long and his wife Pamela of Blakeslee; two daughters , Colette wife of David Barnes of Arnold, Md., and Christine M. wife of Kenneth Ziegler of Bethlehem, Pa.; one sister, Loyes Brown of Walnutport; one brother, Raymond Long, Jr., of Northampton; and 2 grandsons, Jason and Adam Ziegler of Bethlehem. He was preceded in death by a brother, Carson Long and his stepmother, Catherine (Truchses) Long.

Funeral Services will begin 10 a.m. Friday at the Donald N. Gower Funeral Home, Inc., Route 209, Gilbert, with the Rev. Father William McCawley officiating.

Interment will be in the Arlington Memorial Park, Route 145, White hall, Pa.

Viewing will be held Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Donald N. Gower Funeral Home, Inc., Route 209, Gilbert. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Christ the King Catholic Church, Route 115, Blakeslee, PA 18610 or to the American Heart Association (Lehigh-Northampton County Division), P.O. Box 1392, Bethlehem, PA 18018.
