Myrtle E. Hilliard

Myrtle E. Hilliard, 90 of Nazareth, died on Friday in Muhlenberg Hospital Center, Bethlehem. She was the widow of Harold G. Hilliard.
Born in Brodheadsville, she was the daughter of the late Eugene A. and Anna S. (Bonser) Serfass.
Mrs. Hilliard was a volunteer for the American Cancer Society; Ladies Aid Quilting Group at Grace Lutheran Church, East Stroudsburg; and the Missionary Society of Pen Argyl. She was a former member of the PTA and Educator Association. She was of the Lutheran faith.
She graduated from Bangor High School in 1924 and was certified as a teacher in 1926 from East Stroudsburg Normal School. She taught in various one-room schoolhouses in Northampton County from 1926-1940; Bangor and Pen Argyl districts and finally Stroudsburg School District until her retirement after 36 years.
She is survived by three daughters , Marilyn Hagley of Delta Junction, AK, Donna Hilliard of Santee, Calif. and Nancy Hilliard of Stroudsburg; a son, Paul Hilliard of Lyndon, Vt.; two sisters , Grace Hammond of North Haverill, N.H. and Mabel Weiss of Stroudsburg; and seven great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a daughter, Grace Hilliard in 1940.
Funeral services will be announced at a later date.

Joan Agnes Valchos, 57 of Canadensis, died Sunday at home.
Born on March 16, 1941, in Hoboken, N.J., she was the daughter of Salvatore and Mary Finzi of Palisades Park, N.J. She had lived in the area part-time for 10 years and permanently for the past five years, moving here from Maywood, N.J. She had owned and operated Hair Plus Nails in Maywood until 1993 and then Hair Club of Canadensis for the last four years.
She was a member of St. Bernadette's Roman Catholic Church in Canadensis.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Rachel Robinson of Canadensis; two grandchildren, Kenneth Jr. and Katelynn Robinson of Canadensis; her twin sister, Barbara Roes of Lodi, N.J.; a sister Joyce Caccitore of Hasbrouck Heights, N.J.; two brothers , Kenneth Finzi of Palisades Park, N.J. and Gerald Finzi of New York, N.Y.; and nieces and nephews.
There will be a visitation on Wednesday from 10 to 11 a.m. at St. Bernadette's Roman Catholic Church, Canadensis. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the church with Father Alfred J. Vito as celebrant. Cremation will follow the service in the H.G. Smith Crematory, Stroudsburg.

Bernard P. DeMarrais

Bernard P. DeMarrais, 89, formerly of East Stroudsburg, died Thursday morning in the Brookmont Health Care Center, Effort, where he had been a resident for the past 2½ years. He was the husband of the late Rose DeMarrais who died in 1986.
Born on May 3, 1908, in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was a son of the late William and Loretta E. (LeDuc) DeMarrais and had lived in Monroe County since 1928.
He was a veteran of the United States Navy having served in World War II and worked at the Tobyhanna Army Depot.
He was a member of the Our Lady Queen of Peace Roman Catholic Church, Gilbert, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Surviving are a brother, Girard F. DeMarrais of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and nieces, nephews and friends.
Services will be private with cremation at the H.G. Smith Crematory, Stroudsburg.

George J. Muzsikos

George J. Muzsikos, 80, Cresco, died on Wednesday at his home. He was the husband of the late Mary T. Muzsikos, who died in 1994.
Born in Oak Park, Ill., he was the son of the late Lewis and Mary (Kerekes) Muzsikos. He was a resident of Cresco for the past 10 years.
He received his bachelor of science degree from Seton Hall University in South Orange, N.J., in marketing and public relations. He earned his master's from Seton Hall in management in 1957.
He worked for most of his life for Western Electric Company in New York as a project editor for defense projects. He also was an associate editor for McGraw-Hill in New York; an associate administrator for Gericare Centers in Montclair; an employment research specialist for the State of New Jersey; and a grants administrator in Parsippany, N.J.
He served in World War II with the U.S. Army as a counter intelligence officer.
He has no survivors.
A prayer service will be held on Friday at 12 p.m. from the Thomas Funeral Home, 401 N. Fifth St., Stroudsburg, with the Rev. Thomas Sokolowski officiating. Burial will be in the Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington, N.J.
There will be no viewing.

Mrs. Rita M. Born

Mrs. Rita M. Born, 78, of Pittston Blvd., Bear Creek Twp., died Thursday morning in the Inpatient Unit of Hospice St. John at the Penn State Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Plains Twp.
She was born Dec. 25, 1919, in Wilkes-Barre, a daughter of the late Henry and Margaret Kinney Bertram. She was a graduate of St. Nicholas High School in Wilkes-Barre.
Mrs. Born was formerly employed as a bookkeeper for the Maple Crest Nursing Home and later for the Appalachian Self Storage Company of Wilkes-Barre. She was a member of St. Nicholas Church, S. Washington Street, Wilkes-Barre. She was also a member of its Altar & Rosary Society and a volunteer for the weekly church bingo and for the St. Vincent de Paul Kitchen in Wilkes-Barre.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Born in 1958 and by a son, Joseph Born in 1968. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Anthony Bertram.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Edward (Peggy) Christian of Stroudsburg; 2 grandchildren, Edward Christian of Stroudsburg and Patti Iachini of Harrisburg; a brother, Henry Bertram of Old Forge; and several nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated Saturday at 11 a.m. in St. Nicholas Church, S. Washington St., Wilkes-Barre. Private interment will be in Mount Greenwood Cemetery, Shavertown.
Friends may call on Saturday at the church from 10:30 a.m. until the time of the Mass.

Evelyn R. Kley, 85, of Wilkes-Barre, died Friday in the Summit Health Care Center, Wilkes-Barre. She was the wife of the late Ransome Kley who died in 1972.
Born on May 5, 1912, in Roebling, N.J., she was the daughter of the late Robert and Sarah McConnell and had lived most of her life in Philadelphia until moving to Wilkes-Barre several years ago.
She was a life member of the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting Quakers, Cherry Street Meeting.
She is survived by a son, Robert A. Kley of Wilkes-Barre.
Private graveside memorial services will be held at the convenience of the family at the Stroudsburg Cemetery.

Shirley E. Diaz, 66, formerly of N. Catasaqua, died on Saturday, March 28, at the Pocono Medical Center in East Stroudsburg.
She was born in Northampton; a daughter of the late Thomas E. Gogle and Elsie A. (Reinert) Gogle. She was a self-employed nursing companion for 17 years until her retirement in 1996.
She was of the Protestant faith and a member of the Grace U.C.C. Church in Northampton. She was a former choir member and former member of the Altar Guild at Grace U.C.C.
She is survived by two daughters , Robin Lutcher of Brodheadsville; Shawn Diaz of Londonberry, NH; a son, Craige Diaz of Stroudsburg; three sisters , Patricia Brenkacs of North Catasaqua; Jacqueline Younger of Catasaqua; Dorothy Guildner of Kunkletown; a brother, Thomas Gogle of Orefield, and three grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at the Grace U.C.C. Church, 9th and Lincoln Ave., Northampton with the Rev. Sally Zelker officiating.
Relatives and friends may pay their respects on Monday from 7-8:00 p.m. at Schisler Funeral Home, 2119 Washington Ave., Northampton.
Internment will take place Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. at the Egypt Cemetery, White hall Township.

Mary Catherine Lordon, 69, of Stroudsburg, died Friday in the White Plains Hospital, White Plains, N.Y. She was the wife of Richard Andrew Lordon with whom she had celebrated 44 years of marriage last July.
Born on May 17, 1928, in New York City, N.Y.; she was a daughter of the late Michael and Mary (Rooney) Killilea and had lived in Stroudsburg for the past two years, moving here from Suffern, N.Y.
She had worked as a comptroller for Action Graphics, in Little Falls, N.J., and was a member of St. Luke's Roman Catholic Church in Stroudsburg.
Surviving in addition to her husband are a daughter, Mary Catherine, wife of Bruce Potter, of East Stroudsburg; a sister, Eileen Hoblin, of White Plains, N.Y.; a brother, Jack Killilea, of Charleston, S.C.; a grandson, William Potter, of East Stroudsburg; a granddaughter, Ashley Potter, of East Stroudsburg; and several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Luke's Roman Catholic Church, Main Street, Stroudsburg, with the Rev. Carmen Perry as celebrant. Burial will follow in Stroudsburg Cemetery.
There will be a viewing on Tuesday from 3-5 p.m. and from 7-8:30 p.m. at the William H. Clark Funeral Home, 1003 Main Street, Stroudsburg.

Edith M. Werkheiser, 91, of Stroudsburg, died on Friday in the Brookmont Health Care Center in Effort. She was the wife of the late Harry A. Werkheiser who died in 1945.
Born in Sugar Hollow, Chestnuthill Twp., she was a daughter of the late Monroe P. and Emma L. (Bond) Brong.
She had helped manage the Lackawanna Trail Diner in Stroudsburg for many years, retiring in 1958. Prior to that, she had been a waitress at the Lily Pond Restaurant in Saylorsburg and had also worked as a mender at the Stroudsburg Hoisery Mill.
She was of the Reformed faith.
She was a 50 year member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Stroudsburg, the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary in East Stroudsburg, the Loder Senior Citizens Group in Stroudsburg and AARP.
She is survived by two sons , Kenneth N. Werkheiser of Stroudsburg and Glenn M. Werkheiser of Sciota; three daughters , Betty J. Altemose of Brodheadsville, Helen E. Gatza of Tampa, Fla. and Jean M. Sargeant of Vienna, N.J.; five half-sisters , Pearl Ketzel of Tampa, Fla., Emma Shafer of Stroudsburg, Marguerite Shafer of Pen Argyl, Mary Jean Warner of Pocono Lake and Glendora Eckman of Lehighton; nine grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, William, and a daughter, Mary; a granddaughter, Lonnie Rush; two brothers , Norman and Stanley Brong; two half-sisters , Virginia Shafer and Pauline Brong and seven half-brothers , Harold, Claude, Kenneth, Sterling, Leon, Homer and Albert Brong.
A viewing will be held on Tuesday from 2 to 3 p.m. at the Kresge Funeral Home, Route 209, Brodheadsville. Funeral services follow at 3 p.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Robert Shrom officiating. Burial will be in Buena Vista Cemetery, Brodheadsville.
