Arlene J. Mirel

February 26, 1998

Arlene J. Mirel, 57 of Saylorsburg, died Thursday at St. Luke's Hospital in Bethlehem.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Harry and Pearl (Dickstein) Mirel.

She had worked as a Clinical Psychologist at Mental Health/Mental Retardation of Monroe County for over 15 years.

She had attended Temple Israel in Stroudsburg.

She is survived by a daughter, Donna Thiers of Effort; 1 sister, Susan Johnson of Brodheadsville; 1 brother, Stanley Mirel of Mahopac, N.Y.; 7 grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Services were held 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 26, at the Donald N. Gower Funeral Home, Inc., Route 209, Gilbert, with the Rabbi Steven Peskind officiating.

Memorial donations may be made to the Family: Donna Thiers, 1623 Donald Road, Effort, Pa. 18330.

Regina T. Hastie

February 25, 1998

Regina T. "Jean" Hastie, 84, of East Stroudsburg died Wednesday in Milford Manor, East Stroudsburg. She was the wife of the late Lewis R. Hastie who died on July 25, 1988.

Born on June 5, 1913 in Dunmore, she was the daughter of the late Michael J. and Margaret (Carroll) McGuire and had lived most of her life in East Stroudsburg.

A graduate of the Dunmore School and the Lackawanna Business College in Scranton, she was a member of St. Matthew's Roman Catholic Church, East Stroudsburg, and its Altar and Rosary Society.

She is survived by several nieces, nephews and one cousin. She was preceded in death by four sisters , Anna Leeson, Margaret Holland, Mary Fraunfelter and Rita Eagleton and two brothers , Edward McGuire and Frank McGuire.

Services will begin at 9 a.m. on Monday at the William H. Clark Funeral Home, 1003 Main Street, Stroudsburg, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Matthew's Roman Catholic Church, East Stroudsburg, with Father Thomas Sokolowski as celebrant. Burial will be in the Laurelwood Cemetery, Stroudsburg.

There will be a viewing on Sunday from 3 to 4:30 p.m. and 7 to 8:30 p.m. with prayer services at 7 p.m. at the William H. Clark Funeral Home, 1003 Main Street, Stroudsburg.

Rose Marie Rita Venturini

February 14, 1998

Rose Marie Rita Venturini, 62, of Pocono Summit and Cape Coral, Fla., formerly of Pennsauken, Cinnaminson, Upper Montclair, N.J., died on February 14 in Cinnaminson, N.J., due to an illness. She was the wife of Joseph L. Venturini at home.

She was born in Merchantville, N.J., the daughter of the late George M. and Agnes T. Purves. She resided in Florida for twelve years; and in Pennsylvania for twenty-two years.

She attended Camden Catholic High School in Camden, N.J.; Trenton State College in Trenton, N.J.; Montclair University in Montclair, N.J.; and Seton Hall University in South Orange, N.J.

She was employed by Camden Board of Education in Camden, N.J. for six years as a high school teacher; St. Philip the Apostle Grammer School in Clifton, N.J., for seven years as a librarian; and Montclair Board of Education in Montclair, N.J., for seven years as a media specialist retiring in 1985.

She was a member of St. Cecilia R.C. Church in Pennsauken, N.J.; Sacred Heart R.C. Church in Riverton, N.J.; St. Philip the Apostle in Clifton, N.J.; St. Mary of the Mount in Mount Pocono; and St. Andrew's Church in Cape Coral, Fla. Other memberships include: Committee Member of Northeast School in Montclair, N.J.; President of Stillwater Lakes Property Association; Committee Member of Cinnaminson Civic Association; and a member of N.J.E.A.

In addition to her husband she is survived by three children: Vicki M. Massino of Ardsley; Gwen A. Ulatowski of Pine Hill, N.J.; and Jeffrey J. Venturini of Marlton, N.J.; a sister, Geraldine Purves Tabako of Pennsauken, N.J.; a mother -in-law, Mary H. Venturini of Cinnaminson, N.J.; and an aunt, Rose M. Dennings of Moorestown, N.J.

Viewing was held February 17, at the Funeral Home of Inglesby & sons , Cove Road, Pennsauken, N.J., with a Mass of Christian Burial on February 18 at Sacred Heart Church in Riverton, N.J. Interment was private.

Richard Mann

Richard Mann, of Mesa, Ariz., formerly of Stroudsburg (1958-1977), died recently.

He is survived by his wife, Joan Adelmann Mann; 4 sons , Richard, Robert, Kenneth and Ronald; and 8 grandchildren.

He was employed as a printer at the Pocono Record and Hughes Printing.

Burial will take place at Queen of Peace Cemetery at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 2.

Milton W. Wolbert

February 27, 1998

Milton W. Wolbert, 79, of Stroudsburg, died Friday at home. He was the husband of Viola (Counterman) Wolbert to whom he had been married since August 12, 1939.

Born on June 14, 1918, in Jackson Township, he was the son of the late Milton and Pearl (Ables) Wolbert and had lived in the area all of his life. He had worked for Line Material, now Cooper Industries in East Stroudsburg for 37 years retiring in 1981 as an inspector.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters , Doris Frantz of Reeders and Lenora Varkony of Cody, Wyo.; two brothers , Jacob Wolbert of East Stroudsburg and Marshall Wolbert of Stroudsburg; four grandchildren; five great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth Milton Wolbert, who died in 1942.

Funeral Services will be held on Monday at 1:30 p.m. in the William H. Clark Funeral Home, 1003 Main Street, Stroudsburg, with Brother Stephen Bortlik officiating. Burial will follow in the Buena Vista Cemetery, Brodheadsville.

There will be a viewing on Monday from 12:30 p.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Lehigh Valley Hospice, 1273 North Ninth Street, Stroudsburg, 18360.

James W. Knowles

March 10, 1998

James W. Knowles, 42, of Canadensis, died Tuesday in Pocono Medical Center. He was the husband of Margaret "Peggy" (Coons) Knowles.

Born in Abington, he was the son of the late Walter J. Jr. and Charleen (Foster) Knowles. He was a resident of Monroe and Pike Counties most of his life.

He was the owner and operator of the Jim Knowles Contracting in Canadensis for the past 20 years. He was a member of the Monroe County Beagle Club in Stroud Twp., the Black River Valley Beagle Club in Barnes Corner, N.Y., and the Chestnut Ridge Rod & Gun Club in Longpond. He was also a 1973 graduate of East Stroudsburg High School.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by 3 daughters , Ashley Knowles, at home, Shawne Knowles of Denver, Colo., and Jessica Knowles of Brodheadsville; 4 sisters , Mary Ellen Foulds of Gilbertsville, Bridget Scott of Zionsville, Patricia Campas of Luzerne and Frances M. Knowles of Kingston; 2 brothers , Michael L. Knowles of Marshalls Creek and John F. Knowles of Lock Haven; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 12 noon in the Lanterman & Allen Funeral Home, 27 Washington Street, East Stroudsburg, with Fr. John Bergamo officiating.

A visitation will take place on Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to the time of the service in the funeral home. A cremation will take place at the Arlington Crematory, White hall.

By request of the family, memorial donations may be made in lieu of flowers to the American Heart Association, 71 North Franklin Street, Wilkes-Barre, PA 18701.

March 9, 1998

B. Lillian Borger, 88, of Kresgeville, died Monday in the Brookmont Health Care Center, Effort.

She was the wife of Earl E. Borger at home. They had celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary in June of 1997.

Born in Slatington, she was a daughter of the late Emmett and Mary (Green) Andrews.

She had attended East Stroudsburg Normal School and had taught in a one room school house in Eldred Township. Later, she had worked in the administrative offices of the New Jersey Zinc Co. in Palmerton prior to her marriage.

She was a member of Salem St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Kresgeville.

In addition to her husband she is survived by a son, Douglas Borger of Bowmanstown; three daughters , Mrs. Lila Bundick of Ponce Inlet, Fla., Mrs. Mary Lou Pisoncik of Irvine, Calif., and Mrs. Cora Lee Woodworth of Grantham, N.H.; 6 grandchildren; 3 step grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday from the Kresge Home, 209 Brodheadsville, with the Rev. Deborah Scheffey officiating. Burial will be in Gilbert Cemetery. A closed casket visitation will be held on Friday from 12 noon until the time of the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Assn., NE PA Chapter, 71 N. Franklin St., Wilkes-Barre, PA 18701.

March 10, 1998

Elizabeth Danner, 90, of Reeders, died Tuesday afternoon in her home. She was the wife of the late Leonard Charles Danner, Sr., who died in 1981.

Born in Philadelphia on November 3, 1907, she was a daughter of the late Richard and Kate (Pacha) Kelley and had lived in Monroe County since 1970 when she moved here from Philadelphia.

She had attended St. Mark's Community Lutheran Church in Appenzell.

Surviving are two sons , Leonard C. Danner, Jr., and Robert L. Danner, both of Andreas; a daughter, Elizabeth B. Campbell, of Reeders; two sisters , Viola Kaiser, of Sellersville and Irene Mullen, of Napa, Calif.; five grandchildren, Lynn Bookamer, Karen Rustine, C. Ross Campbell, Chris Danner, and Chrissy Danner; four great grandchildren, Kelley Rustine, Jessica Rustine, Kyle Danner, and Joshua Danner; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 10: 30 a.m., Saturday from the William H. Clark Funeral Home, 1003 Main Street, Stroudsburg, with the Rev. Harry M. Laubach officiating. Burial will follow in Prospect Cemetery, East Stroudsburg.

There will be a viewing on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the services at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial contributions be made to St. Mark's Community Lutheran Church, P. O. Box 146, Reeders, PA 18352 or to Hospice Preferred Choice, 799 Northern Blvd., P. O. Box 210, Clarks Summit, PA 18411.

John P. Garrahan

March 12, 1998

John P. Garrahan, 74, of Penn Estates, died on Thursday in his home. He was the husband of Ann (Swalik) Garrahan. The couple celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary this past January.

Born in Plains, Pa., he was the son of the late John A. and Rose (Lane) Garrahan. He was a resident of Monroe County since 1985. His prior residence was in Levittown, Pa.

He was employed by the U.S. Post Office for 35 years, in the Postal Regional Office in Philadelphia until his retirement in 1979. He was a WW II Veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corp.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by 2 daughters , Joann M. Garrahan of Chalfont and Carol J. Garrahan of Levittown; 2 sons , Jack Garrahan and wife, Vicki, of Pasadena, Md., and Michael F. Garrahan and wife, Cathi, of Richboro; 5 sisters , Josephine McMinds of Newark, Del., Nancy Harrity of Iselin, N.J., Colleen Welch of Herndon, Vir., Rita Powell of Elmira, N.Y., and Peggy Whitman of Wilkes-Barre; and 9 grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday at St. Matthews Catholic Church, Ridgeway St., East Stroudsburg, at 10 a.m. with Father John Bergamo as celebrant.

A visitation will take place on Sunday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Lanterman & Allen Funeral Home, 27 Washington St., East Stroudsburg. Cremation will take place at the Arlington Crematory, White hall.

Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.

John McGuire

March 12, 1998

John McGuire, 90, of Stroudsburg, died Thursday, March 12 in the Pocono Medical Center in East Stroudsburg. He was the widow of Eleanor (Murray) McGuire who died in Nov. 1997.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was the son of the late John and Elizabeth (Skelly) McGuire. He was a resident of Stroudsburg for the past 25 years and prior to that lived in the Brooklyn, N.Y., area.

He was a retired factory worker having been employed at the Heil Corporation of New York for many years. He was a member of St. Luke's Roman Catholic Church in Stroudsburg.

He is survived by a sister Lillian Morray of Burton, S.C.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 16, at 10 a.m. from the Joseph J. Pula Funeral Home, with the Rev. Thomas D. McLaughlin officiating. Interment will be in the Laurelwood Cemetery in Stroudsburg.

Visitation will be on Monday from 9 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.
