Stanley E. Watts

Retired from Girton Manufacturing after 40 years

Stanley E. Watts, 88, of 1459 Millertown Road, Millville, died Thursday morning, Jan. 8, 2004, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.

He was born April 27, 1915 in Pine Township, a son of the late Frank and Pearl Welliver Watts. He graduated from Millville High School.

Mr. Watts worked for Girton Manufacturing Co. for 40 years, working in a number of management positions until his retirement in 1980.

He was a member of Salem United Methodist Church, Unityville, where he served in many capacities, including Sunday school superintendent and trustee. He was a member of Oriental Lodge 460 F&AM, Orangeville, and Caldwell Consistory. He was an avid, lifelong Yankees fan and also enjoyed hunting and gardening.

Mr. Watts is survived by one son, Paul, of Bloomsburg; two daughters , Linda Mallin and Esther McQuaide and her husband, Chet, all of Georgia; two grandsons, Timothy McQuaide and James McQuaide and his wife, Hilary, and one great-granddaughter, Astrid Grace McQuaide, all of California.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Olive Stair Watts, Oct. 16, 1993; by two brothers , Glenn and Ralph Watts, of Pine Township, and by a nephew, David Watts, also of Pine Township.

Funeral services for Mr. Watts will be held on Sunday, Jan. 11, at 2 p.m. from Salem United Methodist Church, Unityville, with the Rev. Carol Price officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Bunnell Funeral Home, Main Street, Millville.

Minor A. Leighow

Minor A. Leighow, age 85, of 1208 Desert Hills Drive, Sun City Center, Fla., died Sunday, Jan. 4, 2004, at Plaza West Health Center, Sun City Center, Fla.

He was born April 15, 1918, in Northumberland, the son of the late Amos and Alice Dietrich Leighow. Minor served in the Pacific Theater with the U.S. Army during WWII. In 1958, he started Leighow Oil Co. in Danville, retiring in 1986.

He was a member of the Bloomsburg Masonic Lodge, Danville Elks and the Valley Grange. In 1983, he was named Citizen of the Year by American Legion Post 40. He was past president of the Danville Kiwanis and served as lieutenant governor of the organization in 1983. He was awarded the Legion of Honor for 50 years of service with the Kiwanis. He was past president of the Danville Chamber of Commerce. He served on the Board of the Columbia Montour Council of Boy Scouts. He was active in supporting many community endeavors. Minor was a member of the Pine Street Lutheran Church for many years, where he served on the church council. While in Florida, he was a member of Sun City United Methodist Church. An avid golfer, he belonged to both the Frosty Valley Country Club in Danville and the South Course in Sun City Center, Florida. He thoroughly enjoyed traveling in the U.S. and abroad.

He is survived by his wife of 20 years, the former Tirzah Coppes; a daughter, Nancy Leighow of Reston, Va.; five sons : John and his wife, Carla; Dennis and his wife, Ellen; Glen and David Leighow, all of Danville; and Richard Leighow of Woodbridge, Va.; three stepchildren: Mrs. Terry (Cynthia) Miller of Dauphin; Debrah Pesto of South Euclid, Ohio; Craig Pesto of Austin, Texas . Minor is also survived by nine grandchildren: Ann Leighow, Amanda Leighow, Alyssa Leighow, David L. Leighow, Dianna Leighow, Emily Leighow, Scott Leighow, Bill Hoyes and Sarah Hoyes; step-grandchildren: Wesley and Camela Speer, Brett and Kelly Miller, Troy and Heather Miller, Nathan J. Miller and Jennifer Blaczak; and four step-great-grandchildren: Slayton Speer, Keighan Speer, Nathan A. Miller and Theodore Miller. Also surviving are two sisters : Mrs. Paul (Geraldine) Ploch of Bloomsburg; Eleanor Leverenz of Clemmons, N.C.; and one brother-in-law, Harry Bichner of Mechanicsburg.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, the former Dorothy Smith, in 1981, by a brother, Howard Leighow, and by a sister, Thelma Bichner.

Funeral services will be held at noon on Friday at Pine Street Lutheran Church with his pastor, the Rev. Jeffery Bohan, officiating. Burial will follow at Washington ville Lutheran Cemetery. Friends may call at the church from 10:30 a.m. until the time of the service. The family will provide flowers. Donations in his memory may be made to Pine Street Lutheran Church, 407 Pine St., Danville, Pa. 17821 or to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, Grand Central Station, P.O. Box 4777, New York, N.Y. 10163.

Arrangements are being handled by Brady Funeral Home Inc., 320 Church St., Danville. Interment will be in Washington ville Lutheran Cemetery.

Perry A. Watts Jr.

Perry A. Watts Jr., 62, formerly of this area, died on Thursday, Dec. 25, 2003, at his residence in Adamsville, Tenn. Born in Bloomsburg on July 2, 1941, he was the son of the late Perry A. and Dorothy (Kessler) Watts Sr.

Perry is survived by numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Interment services will be at Twin Hills Memorial Park, Muncy, at the convenience of the family, under the direction of McCarty-Thomas Funeral Home Inc., Hughesville.

Nellie 'Twink' Walp

Berwick native former Nescopeck borough secretary

Nellie "Twink" Walp, 75, of Second Street, Nescopeck, died 3:10 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2004, at Columbia-Montour Hospice in Maria Hall, Danville.

Nellie was born in Berwick, June 21, 1928, a daughter of the late John and Nellie Kirylich Daniels. She graduated from Berwick High School in 1946.

Until she retired, she served as Nescopeck Borough secretary for many years.

She was a member of Faith United Evangelical Lutheran Church, Nescopeck. She enjoyed gardening and doing crossword puzzles.

Preceding her in death were her husband of 29 years, Donald C. Walp, Oct. 29, 1977, and three brothers , John Daniels, Mike Daniels and Nicholas Daniels, who died in infancy.

Survivors include three children: Susan Aten, Bloomsburg; Donald Walp, Berwick; and Robert Walp, Charles Town, W.Va.; five grandchildren: Matt and Ryan Aten; Doug, Kristin and Alex Walp; three sisters : Anne Simchock and Catherine Kalanick, both of Berwick; Mary Mazzochetti Lazure, McAdoo.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday from Faith United Evangelical Lutheran Church, Nescopeck, with Rev. Jeffrey W. Odgren, her pastor, officiating. She will be laid to rest next to her beloved husband in Pine Grove Cemetery, Walnut Street, Berwick. Calling hours will be Friday from 7 to 9 .m. at Heller Funeral Home, Nescopeck, or in the church from 10:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday. Expressions of sympathy may be sent to Columbia-Montour Hospice at Maria Hall, 599 E. Seventh St., Bloomsburg, Pa. 17815.

Winifred Pennington Werre

Employed for more than 40 years by Lady Ester

Winifred Pennington Werre, formerly of Berwick, died 10:20 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004 in Berwick Retirement Village II, where she resided since Oct. 22, 2001.

Winifred was born in Nescopeck, Aug. 9, 1912, a daughter of the late Wilson and Grace Kirkendall Bond.

Prior to entering the Retirement Village, she resided in Berwick 52 years and before that in Forks. For more than 40 years, she was employed by Lady Ester, Berwick.

She was a member of Albright United Methodist Church, Nescopeck.

Preceding her in death were two sisters and one brother: Alverda Haas, Mary Heacock and Robert Bond.

Survivors include two sons : Kenneth Pennington and his wife Eleanor, Nescopeck; Robert Pennington and his wife Charlotte, Raritan, N.J.; four grandchildren: Diane Douglass, Islamorada, Fla.; Dirk Pennington, Pottstown; Mark Pennington, Bridgewater, N.J.; Ross Pennington, Easton; seven great-grandchildren: Sarah and Brett Pennington; Dawn and Gwen Douglass; Sterling, Andrea and Alexandra Pennington.

Arrangements are entrusted to the care of Heller Funeral Home, Nescopeck, where services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday with Donald E. Heacock, assistant pastor of Bethany U.M. Church, Berwick, officiating. She will be laid to rest in Mifflinville Cemetery. Calling hours will be Saturday from 1 to 2 p.m. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the memorial fund of Albright U.M. Church, 507 E. Third St., Nescopeck, Pa. 18635.

Robert Allen 'Bob' Muchler

Robert Allen "Bob" Muchler, 49, of 6979 Startown Road, Maiden, N.C., died Sunday, Jan. 4, 2004 at Lincoln Medical Center.

Born Oct. 5, 1954, in Mocanaqua, he was the son of the late Robert Allen and Rose Marie Mendola Muchler.

He was employed with Ryder Transportation Service. He retired as gunnery sergeant from the U.S. Marine Corps after 26 years of service. While in the Marines, he served as chief of transport operations in various countries, including Beirut, Lebanon, Libya, France, Italy, Central America, Norway and Okinawa, Japan.

He was also a member of the VFW, American Legion and the Marine Transportation Unit of Camp Lejeune.

Survivors include his wife, Patrice Rockett Muchler, at home; a stepson, Michael Ray Drum, at home; a sister, Marie Larish, at home; an aunt, Barbara Mendola of Wilkes-Barre; an uncle, Dr. John Mendola and wife, Joan, of Madison, N.J.; a nephew, Christopher Larish of Berwick; and numerous cousins.

The funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 8, at Drum Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Dixon Adams will officiate. Burial will be in Conover City Cemetery. The family will receive friends, prior to the service, from 9:30 until 10:45 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Sipes Orchard Home, 4431 County Home Road, Conover, N.C. 28613. Condolences may be sent to the Muchler Family at www.drumfuneralhome.com. The Muchler family has entrusted funeral arrangements to Drum Funeral Home and Cremations in Conover.

Donald L. Lowe Sr.

Selfless family man

Donald L. Lowe Sr., 83, of 1001 Susquehanna Ave., Berwick, beloved husband, Father and a Christian testimony, joined the presence of the Lord on Friday, Feb. 20, 2004, following a prolonged illness. He had been a patient at Geisinger Medical Center since Sunday.

He was born Sept. 16, 1920, in Berwick and was the son of the late Charles and Myrtle Wilson Lowe.

As a young man Mr. Lowe drove for M&G Convoy in Buffalo, and then worked for the former AC&F Industries plant in Berwick. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theater. Following the war he went to work for Wise Potato Chip Co. in Berwick as an over-the-road truck driver for 38 years, retiring in 1984.

Donald was a member of the First Baptist Church, Berwick, serving as an usher, a trustee and a deacon for many years.

He also was a member of the Knapp Lodge No. 462 F&AM Berwick, Caldwell Consistory, Bloomsburg, and the Teamsters Union.

He enjoyed doing woodworking when his health permitted.

Mr. Lowe is survived by his wife, the former Lucreta P. Eyer, and they celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary on Nov. 30, 2003. Also surviving are two sons , Larry Lowe, and his wife Jane, of Espy; Donald Lowe Jr. and his wife, Cheryl, of Locust Grove, Ga.; three grandchildren: Amy Lowe Matukaitis, and her husband Michael, of Riverside; Steven Lowe, of Bloomsburg; and Ellis Lowe and his wife Beth, of Jonesboro, Ga.; nine great-grandchildren and a sister, Ellen Audrey Pyles, and her husband Frank, of Berwick.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church, 224 W. Front St., Berwick, with the Rev. Craig W. Martin, his pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the Pine Grove Cemetery, Walnut Street, Berwick. Friends will be received from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the church. Contributions in his memory may be made to the First Baptist Church Memorial Fund, 224 W. Front St., Berwick, PA, 18603. The James L. Hinckley Jr. Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Fredrick V. Dewalt

Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday

Fredrick V. Dewalt, 71, of 12 Pine St., Apt. 2, Danville, Pa. died Friday, at his residence. Born Dec. 31, 1932, in Danville, he was a son of the late Edward and Eva Dewalt.

Fred worked around the Danville area doing odd jobs for anybody who needed help.

Surviving is a brother, Frank, Bloomsburg. He was preceded in death by a brother and a sister.

Graveside services will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday at Columbia Hill Cemetery, with the Rev. Edmund Minnich officiating. There will be no viewing.

Arrangements are being handled by Brady Funeral Home, Inc., 320 Church St., Danville.

John T. Valousky

John T. Valousky, 82, of Beaver Valley Road, Bloomsburg, passed away Saturday morning at his home.

Arrangements will be announced in an upcoming edition.

The Mark S. Harman Funeral Homes Inc. (West), Conyngham-Rock Glen Road, is assisting the Valousky family with arrangements.
