THE REV. MAX E. SMITH
The Rev. Max E. Smith, 75, of Ligonier, Rector Emeritus of St. Michael's of the Valley Episcopal Church, Rector, died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2000. He was born Aug. 19, 1924, in Confluence, a son of the late Harry E. and Mary Matthews Smith. Max was rector at St. Michael's of the Valley Episcopal Church, Rector, from 1968-87 and rector emeritus from 1968 to the present. He graduated from Muskingum College in 1949, the Philadelphia School of Divinity in 1953, at which time he was ordained as an Episcopal priest. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a 2nd lieutenant. He was preceded in death by his wife, Rosemary Schaal Smith, on Feb. 16, 1996; a grandson, Ian Bradley Smith; two brothers , Robert and Carl Smith; and a sister, Evelyn Gardner. He is survived by a son, Bradley E. Smith and his wife, Melissa, of Latrobe; two daughters , Paula S. Columbus and her husband, Jim, of Dayton, Ohio, and Janet S. Cox and her husband, Randy, of Ligonier; six grandchildren, Cedie, Ryland, Mac, Marron, Warren, and Bryan; a niece, Nancy Hittie, and two nephews, Don and James Gardner. Family will receive friends at the SNYDER FUNERAL HOME INC. & CREMATORY, Bell and East Church streets, Ligonier, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday. Memorial services will be held at St. Michael's of the Valley Episcopal Church, Rector, at 11 a.m. Monday with the Rev. James B. Simons officiating. Private interment in St. Michael's Cemetery. Family will receive friends in the parish house following the service. Charles S. Storey, 85, of South Chestnut Street, Scottdale, passed away Tuesday evening, Feb. 22, 2000, in Harmon House Convalescent Center, Mt. Pleasant. NICK SUSICK
Nick Susick, 64, of Export, died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2000. Born April 28, 1935, in Export, the son of the late Louis and Anna Wadrose Susick. Mr. Susick was a retired employee of Westinghouse Air Brake in Wilmerding, and was a member of the L.O.O.M. #234 and the Italian American Club, both of Export. He is survived by two sons , Sean N. and wife, Jodi, of Greensburg RD4 and Christopher C. and wife, Peggy, of Export; also survived by a granddaughter, Nicole Susick. DELORIS R. SORBIN TRYBUS
Deloris R. "Dee" Sorbin Trybus, 62, of Saltsburg, died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2000, in Latrobe Area Hospital. She was born May 8, 1937, in Homer City, the daughter of the late George and Goldie Irene Rankin Sorbin. She was a homemaker and a loving mother . In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Philip A. Trybus, in 1967; a son, John, in 1979; and by a brother, James Sorbin. She is survived by three sons , Greg Trybus and his wife, Norma, of Saltsburg, Stanley Trybus at home and Brad Trybus and his wife, Tracy, of Avonmore; two daughters , Darcy Plachta and her husband, Mark, of Derry and Stacy Trybus at home; five grandchildren; two brothers , Bill Sorbin and his wife, Clara, of Saltsburg and Doug Sorbin and his wife, Robin, of Indiana, Pa.; and several nieces and nephews. Friends received from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in the KELLY L. GAIL A. UCHRINSCKO
Gail A. Uchrinscko, 63, of Voyager Estates, West Newton, died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2000, at her home. Born May 29, 1936, in Wyano, Pa., a daughter of the late James and Bertha Raymond Corwin. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence W. Uchrinscko, in 1993; also by six brothers , Paul, Charles, Donald, James, Earl, and William Corwin; and three sisters , Dorothy Harshbarger, Audrey May, and Shirley Blanish. Surviving are three sons , Karl W. Uchrinscko of Huntsville, Ala., Paul A. Uchrinscko of Warren, Ohio, and Steven L. Uchrinscko of West Newton; two daughters , Dawn Kilgore of West Newton and Theresa Vernet of Trenton, N.J.; 10 grandchildren; and three sisters , Mrs. Elsie Clark, Mrs. George (Betty) Janitor, and Mrs. Cammilla Penska, all of Wyano. Friends will be received at the BEATTY-RICH FUNERAL HOME INC., Route 136, Madison, Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Services will be held in the funeral home Saturday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. EMMA JANE BITNER WEIERS
Emma Jane Bitner Weiers, 86, of Latrobe RD1, died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2000. She was born Dec. 19, 1913, in Kecksburg, a daughter of the late Grant W. and A. Jane Porch Bitner. She was a graduate of Hurst High School, Class of 1932, and the Indiana Normal School in 1934. Prior to her retirement, she taught at the Kecksburg, United, and Norvelt schools with 32 years of service in teaching. She was a life member of Westmoreland County Teacher's Association, life member of the Pennsylvania Retired Teacher's Association, and a member of Latrobe Chapter of the AARP. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Raymond F. Weiers, in November of 1997; brothers , Allen, Harry, and her twin brother, Wayne; and a sister, Mabel "Jackie" Bitner. She is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Joyce Vasinko and her husband, Ray, of Latrobe RD1 and Diane Spears and her husband, John, of Boston, Mass.; the following grandchildren and their spouses, Mark Vasinko and his wife, Donna, Ray Vasinko Jr. and his wife, Mary Helen, Kathy Campbell and her husband, Jeff, Anne Spears and her fiance, Patrick Ludden, and Lisa Stump and her husband, Glen; seven great-grandchildren, Joseph, Daniel, Brandon, Jeffery, Robert, Kaylee, and Jarred; a brother, John Ray and his wife, Eva, of Kecksburg; and nieces and nephews. Rose Ann Kerr Whitney, on Thursday, Feb. 24, 2000. Beloved wife of William J. mother of Patrick M. and Shirley Jean Hernadez. Stepmother of William, John, Jay, and Ronald Whitney, and Rose Marie Blackburn. Daughter of Shirley Evers Kerr. Sister of Nick Kerr and the late James Kerr and Elsie Blandino. Juliann "Judy" Keitz Wilson, 55, of Norvelt, formerly of Mammoth, died Thursday, Feb. 24, 2000, in Frick Hospital, Mt. Pleasant. She was born Oct. 3, 1944, in Mt. Pleasant, the daughter of the late Paul and Katharine Pocratsky Keitz. She was a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church of Calumet. Survived by her husband, Charles B. Wilson of Youngwood; two aunts, Mrs. Andrew (Agnes) Pinsky of Mammoth and Mrs. Frank (Juliann "Babe") Pochinsky of Latrobe RD1; and three uncles, Stanley Pocratsky of Finleyville, and Raymond and Thomas Pocratsky, both of Mt. Edna A. (Rickard) Woomer, 89, of Albion, Pa., formerly of Paintertown, died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2000, at her home. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard H. Woomer; and a daughter, Joyce McCann of Hahntown. She is survived by daughters , Carol and husband, James Loughner, of Albion, Dolores and husband, Frank Lunn, of Adamsburg, Gail Hursh of Irwin, Faye Woomer of Albion, and Linda and husband, Steve Krolcyzk, of Albion; sons , Cleve and wife, Cathy Woomer, of Girard, Pa., Richard Woomer of Albion, and Harry and wife, Linda Woomer, of Albion; daughters , Cindy and husband, Dennis Carr, of East Springfield, and Jacqueline and husband, James Delong, of Albion. Surviving sisters are Stella Pointz of Cochranton, Elsie Blankfield of Cochranton, Margaret "Peg" Beiter Pointz of Cochranton, Rebecca Fisher of Andover, Ohio, Nellie Lewis of Greensburg; and a brother, Walter Rickard of Memphis, Tenn. In addition there are 38 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. DR. MARGARET RIVA BARTOK
Dr. Margaret "Peggy" Riva Bartok, 57, of Greensburg, died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2000, in UPMC Shadyside, from complications of lymphoma. She was born Dec. 5, 1942, in Pittsburgh, a daughter of Victor E. and Helen McShane Riva of Charleroi. Dr. Bartok was a graduate from Monessen High School in the Class of 1960, graduated from Carnegie Mellon University in 1964 with a BA degree in English, graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a master's degree in educational testing and research and a master's degree in counseling, and received her Ph.D. in counseling from the University of Pittsburgh. She also obtained a certification in school psychology from Duquesne University. Dr. Bartok was in private practice as a psychologist in the Greensburg area for many years. In addition to her parents, she is survived by two daughters , Rory Elizabeth Bartok of Providence, R.I., and Keri Helene Bartok of Cambridge, Mass.; a brother and sister-in-law, Victor F. and Melanie Riva of Lexington, Ohio; a sister and brother-in-law, Jane Riva and John Scott Provan of Chapel Hill, N.C.; a niece; five nephews; and her companion, Louis R. DeMoss of Greensburg. The family will be receiving relatives and friends Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. in the SCHROCK-HOGAN FUNERAL HOME INC., 226 Fallowfield Ave., Charleroi. Anna Cleland Bashforth, 91, of Penn Township, died Friday, Feb. 18, 2000. She was born Jan. 25, 1909, in Irwin, a daughter of the late Charles and Carrie Beck Cleland. She was also preceded in death by her husband, William J.; a sister, Gladys Cleland; and a brother, Charles Cleland. Mrs. Bashforth was a member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Export. She is survived by two sons , Charles and wife, Judy, of Ohio and William and wife, Linda, of Export; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Memorial service to be held Saturday, Feb. 26, at 11 a.m. at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Export with the Rev. Gregory B. Held officiating. There will be no visitation. Interment will be private. JOSEPHINE GENEVIEVE (TIERNO) CAPUTO
Josephine Genevieve "Jo" (Tierno) Caputo, died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2000, in Tucson, Ariz. Born Jan. 2, 1909, in New Alexandria, she was the daughter of the late Andrew and Grace Yanity Tierno of New Alexandria. She was a resident of Campana del Rio in Tucson, Ariz., for the past five years. Prior to that she had resided in Derry Township for 45 years. She is survived by two children, a son, Joseph A. Caputo of Tucson, Ariz., and a daughter, Carole (Mrs. William) McCray of Ligonier; three grandchildren, W. Patrick McCray and his wife, Olivia, of Washington , D.C., Elizabeth McChesney and her husband, Michael, of Youngsville, Pa., and Vincent J. Caputo and his wife, Cynthia, of Deltona, Fla.; and two great-grandchildren, Emily Kathryn and Jacob Vincent McChesney. One brother, Rocco Tierno of Latrobe, survives her. Thirteen brothers and sisters preceded her in death. She graduated from New Alexandria High School and from the Leech Business School of Greensburg. She was employed as a secretary in the prothonotary's office in Greensburg and as a secretary to the late judges Laird and Copeland. Following her marriage to Ernest J. Caputo, now deceased, she was employed at Torrance State Hospital in the Industrial Therapy Department. She was a member of SS. Simon and Jude Roman Catholic Church, Blairsville, and was an active 50-year®MDBO¯®MDNM¯ member of the Catholic daughters of America Court St. Theresa #562. In Tucson, she attended SS. Peter and Paul Roman Catholic Church. While at Campana del Rio, Jo was an active member of the Ambassador's Club, where she welcomed and assisted new residents. As an avid knitter, she generously contributed her needlework to Campana's holiday bazaar for the needy, and she participated annually in walking several miles in Campana's Walk for Alzheimer's Disease. The family will receive friends at the RICHARD L. SHOEMAKER FUNERAL HOME, 49 N. Walnut St., Blairsville, Friday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. A wake service will be held in the funeral home Friday at 7 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m. in the SS.
