Lois J. Wentz, 73, of Shaler, died Monday, Sept. 18, 2000, in UPMC St. Margaret, Pittsburgh. Born June 30, 1927, in Pittsburgh, she was the daughter of the late Adolph and Grace Guemble. Mrs. Wentz was a homemaker. Survivors include two daughters , Karen Feicht of Washington , Pa. and Susan Kane of Shaler; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Dennis Wentz. Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in BOCK FUNERAL HOME, 1500 Mt. Royal Blvd., Shaler. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in the Allegheny County Memorial Park Mauseleum Chapel, McCandless. Burial will be in Allegheny County Memorial Park, McCandless.
Willis L. Witherite
Greensburg
Willis L. Witherite, 84, of Greensburg, died Sunday, Sept. 17, 2000, in the Westmoreland Regional Hospital, Greensburg. He was born Jan. 4, 1916, in Connellsville, a son of the late Willis A. and Cora Jane Shawley Witherite. Prior to his retirement in 1981, he had been employed by the former Hagan Ice Cream and Milk Co. of Uniontown, later by Country Belle Co-operative Farms and lastly by the Fayette Frozen Foods of Uniontown. During his employment, he had managed dairy stores in Waynesburg and Brownsville, Pa., and also in Fairmont and Morgantown, W.Va. Willis was active in his community by volunteering as the Director of Business Development with the former Go Greensburg Community Development Corp.; he had volunteered with the Meals-on-Wheels, making deliveries in Pleasant Unity for many years. He was very active and founded the AARP Chapter No. 3897 and served as its first president. He also was one of the founders of AARP Chapter No. 4729, and had actively volunteered with Operation Santa Claus since its inception. He was a member and former elder and deacon of the First Presbyterian Church of Greensburg; Westmoreland Lodge No. 518 F&AM, Greensburg, and the A.A.S.R. Valley of Pittsburgh. Willis was a former member of the Greensburg Kiwanis Club. He is survived by his wife, Martha Downs Witherite; a son, Richard Lee Witherite and his wife, Linda, of Yoakum, Texas ; two daughters , Kathryn Jane Gazze and her husband, Edward, of Dover, Del., and Carole Ann Hayden and her husband, Dale, of Wexford; eight grandchildren, Amy and Michael Witherite, Kristen Dungan, Chris, Kimberly and Rebecca Gazze and Nicole and Mark Hayden; two great-grandchildren, Rachel and Madeline Dungan; and a sister, Mabel Witherite Uber of Sarver. Friends received at the BARNHART FUNERAL HOME, 505 E. Pittsburgh St., Greensburg, Tuesday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Services will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. in the First Presbyterian Church, Greensburg, with the Rev. James H. Nash officiating. Entombment will follow in Greenridge Memorial Park, Connellsville. Should friends desire, memorials may be placed with either Redstone Highlands, 6 Garden Center Drive, Greensburg or the First Presbyterian Church, 300 S. Main St., Greensburg. Members of Westmoreland Lodge No. 518 F&AM and Philanthropy Lodge No. 225 F&AM met at the funeral home Tuesday at 7 p.m. to hold Masonic services.

William F. Zagozan, 76, of Cleveland, Ohio (formerly of Slickville), died Monday, Sept. 18, 2000, at his home. He was born April 16, 1924, in Slickville, a son of the late John and Angeline Drolz Zagozan. He had been a resident of Cleveland since 1949. Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a machinist at Warner and Swazey in Cleveland. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Zagozan; three brothers , Robert, Richard and Louis Zagozan; and a grandson, William Sapp. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Goldie H. Repine Zagozan; two daughters , Patricia Sapp and her husband, John, of Gerrardstown, W.Va., and Carol Black and her husband, Kurt, of Cleveland; two brothers , Joseph Zagozan and his wife, Temple, of Stamford, Conn., and Albert Zagozan and his wife, Patti, of Export; five sisters , Angeline Helen Long of Delmont, Josephine Talerico of Slickville, Audrey Wright of Greensburg, Barbara Blazek and her husband, Frank, of Delmont and Mary Ann Shedlock and her husband, Albert, of Greensburg; five grandchildren, Theresa Nicely and her husband, Anthony, John Sapp III, Timothy Stewart Jr., and Sean and Adam Black; and a number of nieces and nephews. Following visitation Wednesday at the Rybicki & Son Funeral Home in Cleveland, Mr. Zagozan's family will receive friends at the JOHN L. Charles "Chuck" Alinsky, 84, died Monday, Sept. 18, 2000, in Manorcare-Jersey Shore in New Jersey. Born April 19, 1916 in Pittsburgh, he was the son of the late Charles and Frances Kopovich Alinsky. Mr. Alinsky was a carpenter for Local 142 for fifty years. Survivors include nieces and nephews; great-nieces and great-nephews; great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews; and his friends and caregivers, Stevie Miller and family of DuBois, Pa. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Walter Alinsky; and three sisters , Josephine Zeiler, Ann Gerbec and Julia Sistek. Angeline M. Mercurio Baird, 95, of Kingview Road, Scottdale, Upper Tyrone Township, died Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2000, in Westmoreland Manor, Greensburg. She was born Aug. 21, 1905, in Scottdale, Upper Tyrone Township, a daughter of the late John and Orlando Leone Mercurio. Angeline was a lifelong member of St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church, Scottdale, and a member of the Catholic daughters of Americas Court Lambing #314. She was also a member of the Scottdale sons of Italy Ladies Lodge. Angeline leaves to cherish her memories: her sister, Helen Aiello and her husband, Sebastian "Busty" of Scottdale; and a number of nieces and nephews, great-nieces and -nephews and great-great-nieces and -nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Baird, who died July 7, 1983; four sisters , Theresa Morrocco, Jennie Mercurio, Mamie Maglieri and Rose Lamanna; and three brothers , Frank, Michael and Dominic A. Mercurio, who died March 2, 1988. Angeline's family will receive friends in the FRANK KAPR FUNERAL HOME INC., 417 W. Robert Edward Brannigan, 75, of Greensburg, died Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2000, at his home. He was born in Greensburg, Oct. 27, 1924, a son of the late James P. and Marie Dreistadt Brannigan. He was a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Greensburg. Prior to retirement, he had been employed by the former Robertshaw Controls of New Stanton with 45 years of service, and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, James; and two sisters , Catherine Brannigan and Marie Artis. He is survived by his loving wife, Frances; his children, Robert E. II of Annapolis, Md., Ann F. Wilson and her husband, Jonathan, of Grand Prairie, Texas , and Elizabeth M. Freeman and husband, Spike, of Harrison City; four grandchildren, April and Heather Wilson, Ashley and Austin Freeman; a brother, Thomas of Latrobe; three sisters , Dolores Vimislicky of Ohio, Margaret Kridle of Illinois and Sally Maras of Maryland; and several nieces and nephews. John G. "Mickey" Cheskey, 90, of Verona, formerly of Herminie, died Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2000, at UPMC St. Margaret Seneca Place Nursing Home in Verona. He was born Sept. 4, 1910, in Bakerstown, a son of the late Charles and Cecilia Cheskey. "Mickey" was a coal miner his entire life, having worked for Consolidation Coal Company and many mines in the local area. Mickey was a 50-year member and former secretary of sons of Labor; a lifetime member of Herminie Volunteer Fire Department; and a member of Herminie Senior Citizens. He was also a member of United Mine Workers of America Union #2155, District #5. Mickey was an avid baseball player, having been the catcher for the Wendel and Renton mines. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Jennie (Mazero) Cheskey, on July 11, 1981; a brother; and four sisters . Mr. Cheskey, "Mickey," is survived by his two daughters , Mrs. Cecilia Wojtaszek and her husband, Lawrence, of Pittsburgh and Mrs. Yolanda Schilling and her husband, Albert, of Parkesburg, Pa.; two grandsons, Tim Wojtaszek and Michael Schilling; two granddaughters, Sharon Newswanger and Maria Romanelli; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. James J. Cronin, 58, died Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2000, in Sewickley Valley Hospital, Sewickley. Mr. Cronin was a member of Steamfitters Local 449. He was a member of the St. Alphonsus Roman Catholic Church Usher's Club in Pine. He as the beloved husband of Maryan Cammarata Cronin. He also is survived by two sons , John J. Cronin of Pine and James P. Cronin of Richland; a daughter, Mary Catherine Cronin of Youngstown, Ohio; two sisters , Mary Ellen O'Hare of Baldwin and Ann Smolak of Mt. Oliver; a brother, John Cronin of Mt. Oliver; and his Father -in-law and mother -in-law, Angelo and Marietta Cammarata. He was preceded in death by his parents, John J. and Mary E. Cronin. Bernice Jean Jones Davis, 87, of Norvelt, died Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2000, at home. She was born March 28, 1913, in Mutual, a daughter of the late Alvy and Emma Lisbon Jones. She was a member of the Pleasant Unity Methodist Church and the Norvelt Senior Citizens. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford Davis; an infant sister, Hettie; two sisters , Bessie Sherrow and Freda Verneau; and three brothers , Clyde, Donald and David Jones. Surviving are her three children, Kathy Milyak and husband, Robert, of Greensburg RD7, Ray Davis of Norvelt and Wayne Davis and wife, Margo, of Lincoln Heights; two grandchildren, Paula Aiello and husband, Fred, and Robert Milyak Jr. and wife, Kim; and four great-grandchildren, Kerrick Scott, Ryan, Nicky and Tony Aiello.
