VALETTA MAY ULERY BLUMBERG
Valetta May Ulery Blumberg, 88, of Pittsburgh, died Friday, March 17, 2000, in the Holston Valley Medical Center, Kingsport, Tenn. She was born June 18, 1911, in Donohoe, a daughter of the late Lewis and Emma Monnich Ulery. She was raised in Greensburg and lived most of her life in Pittsburgh. She was a member of the Evaline Lutheran Church, Pittsburgh, and was a graduate of Latrobe High School and the Indiana Normal School. She had previously been employed as a teacher in the Unity Township schools. She is survived by a son, John Allan Blumberg and his wife, Amy, of Gray, Tenn.; four grandchildren; a brother, Louis Ulery of Johnstown; and a sister, Mrs. Jean Sheffler of Greensburg. Friends will be received at the COSHEY-NICHOLSON FUNERAL HOME INC., 319 W. Pittsburgh St., Greensburg, Tuesday from 10 until 11 a.m., at which time funeral service will be held with the Rev. JENNIE BREZO
Jennie Brezo, 95, of New Derry, died Saturday, March 18, 2000. She was born Aug. 6, 1904, in Charleroi, Washington County, a daughter of the late John Pio and Irma Saccardi Ferrari. Prior to retirement, she was employed at Derry Westinghouse. She was a member of St. Martin Roman Catholic Church and the Rosary Altar Society. During World War II, she was an aircraft observer. Jennie was the oldest person living in New Derry. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Brezo; an infant son; a son, John; and five brothers , Andrew, John, August, George and Frederick. Jennie is survived by two sons , Charles J. and his wife, Ruth, of New Derry, with whom she made her home, and Robert J. of West Farmington, Ohio; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and two sisters , Ida Logan of Derry and Josephine Lawrence of Cleveland, Ohio. Family will receive friends Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the MICHAEL J. QUINLISK FUNERAL HOME INC., 548 N. Chestnut St., Derry. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday at 11 a.m. in St. Martin Church with the Rev. Arthur Holtz as celebrant.
MSGR. HAROLD JOSEPH BURKARDT
Msgr. Harold Joseph Burkardt has had a long and distinguished career in the service of the Lord. He was born March 13, 1922, in Johnstown, the oldest son of the late David and Marie (Russ) Burkardt. Baptized in St. Joseph Church, he received his early education at St. Joseph grade school and Johnstown Catholic High School, graduating in 1939. He then entered the seminary at the Pontifical College Josephinum in Columbus, Ohio. Father Burkardt was ordained on June 1, 1947, for the Diocese of Altoona by the Most Reverend Amleto Giovanni Cicognani, then Apostolic Delegate to the United States (who was himself ordained by Pope Pius X) in the St. Turibius Chapel at the Josephinum. On June 8, 1947, he celebrated his first solemn High Mass in St. Joseph Church, Johnstown. Following ordination, Father Burkardt pursued further studies in chemistry at the Catholic University, Washington , D.C., and Ohio State in Columbus. He was awarded a master of science degree in chemistry in 1953 by Ohio State. Father Burkhardt was assigned as a professor at the Pontifical College Josephinum in 1945, and continued teaching math and science courses for seminarians until his return to his home diocese in 1971. In 1963, Father Burkardt was named a Papal Chaplain by Pope Paul VI, honoring him with the title, "Reverend Monsignor." He served four years as the Dean of Men in the college department and during his last year at the Josephinum he served as joint Dean of Men for both college and theology. After 24 years of service at the Josephinum, Msgr. Burkardt returned to his home diocese of Altoona-Johnstown as a parochial vicar at Holy Name Parish in Ebensburg. In May 1973, he was assigned as pastor of St. Mary Parish, Altoona, where he served until retirement. In early 1983, Monsignor was further honored for his years of service when Pope John Paul II elevated him to Prelate of Honor. Friends will be received today (Sunday) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at THE STEVENS MORTUARY INC., 1421 Eighth Ave., Altoona, and from 3 to 9 p.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Altoona. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday at 11 a.m. in St. Mary Church by Bishop Joseph Adamec.
MILDRED A. BURTON
Mildred A. Burton, 74, of Murrysville, died Friday, March 17, 2000, in Beverly Healthcare of Murrysville. She was born Feb. 8, 1926, in Scranton, a daughter of the late John D. and Mildred A. Pratt Robertson. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William A. Burton; a brother, John Robertson; and a sister, Lois Smith. She is survived by a son, John A. Burton of Murrysville; a daughter, Mrs. Charles (Linda) Weston of Lower Burrell; four granddaughters; four great-grandchildren; two brothers , James Robertson of Apollo and Ronald Robertson of Turtle Creek; and a sister, Jean Smith of Apollo. THEODORE A. CAPUANO
Theodore A. "Ted" Capuano, 92, of Monessen, died Saturday, March 18, 2000, at 12:30 a.m., in the Uniontown Hospital. He was born Dec. 23, 1907, in Monessen, a son of the late Salvatore and Mary Grace (Vito) Capuano. Mr. Capuano retired in 1972 after working for 47 years with U.S. Steel at the Irvin Works, in the Tin Plate Division. He was a trumpet player for the Frank Lombardo (Barr) Orchestra, playing at the Twin Coaches and other valley towns during the Big Band era. He played in the Monessen Firemen's Band and the Belle Vernon and Clairton Musical Bands. He was a charter member of the Mars Band, playing the drums, retiring when he was 83 years of age. He was a member of the Epiphany of Our Lord Roman Catholic Church in Monessen and the AARP Chapter #2753 of Monessen. Surviving are his wife, Marie Arrigo Capuano, with whom he celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary on Feb. 9, 2000; three daughters and sons -in-law, Judith and Domineck Sabatini of Brownsville, Lynette and Edward Kouche II of Wooster, Ohio, and Cynthia and Kevin Conner of Pittsburgh; a son and daughter-in-law, Theodore and Donna Capuano Jr. of Fort Myers, Fla.; a brother, Antonio Capuano of Italy; a sister-in-law, Olga Capuano, and a niece, Elise Silko, both of Rostraver Township; eight grandchildren, Mia Sabatini, Jodi Johnson, Dr. Dominic Sabatini, Edward and Robert Kouche, Vincent and Christopher Capuano, and Colin Conner; and by four great-grandchildren, Alexandria, Samantha and Joel Johnson, and Ryan Anthony Kouche. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers , John, Romualdo and Amedeo Capuano; and by a sister, Settimia Capuano. Mary Margaret Poerstel Cavanaugh, 74, of Mt. Washington , formerly of Latrobe, died Saturday, March 18, 2000. She was a retired nurse from the Allegheny County Health Department, and was an active member of St. Justin Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Patrick Cavanaugh. She is survived by six daughters , Kathleen Palmer, Margaret Fiore, Eileen Weinmann, and Anne, Maureen and Mary Cavanaugh; six sons , Patrick, Michael, Timothy, Kevin, Sean and Brian; mother -in-law of Cindy, Angela, Linda and Candace Cavanaugh, Harry Palmer, Anthony Weinmann and Carl Fiore; 19 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; four sisters ; and four brothers . JOHN J. EMILI
John J. Emili, 76, of Greensburg RD9, died Friday, March 17, 2000, in Latrobe Area Hospital. Born Feb. 21, 1924, in Derry, he was a son of the late Nazzareno and Ida DelCastello Emili. Prior to retirement, he had been employed by the former General Tire of Greensburg. He was a professional musician for over 40 years and a member of the Quintones. He was also a member of St. Bartholomew Catholic Church, Crabtree Volunteer Fire Department, Democratic Club of Greensburg, American Legion, Latrobe, and the Greensburg Musical Society Local 339 of the American Federation of Musicians. He was a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Hector. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters , Phyllis and Olga Emili, Beatrice Hyduke and Rita Grabiak; and a brother, Herman Emili. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Viola Schehr Emili; two sons , Jerry Emili and wife, Barbara, of Greensburg and Don Nazzareno Emili and Ana of Chicago, Ill.; a granddaughter, Jessica; three sisters , Mary Louise Ferretti and husband, John, of Greensburg RD9, Jessie Marto and husband, Robert, of Greensburg and Cecelia Antinori and husband, John, of Crabtree; a brother, Carl Emili and wife, Gladys, of Greensburg RD9; and several nieces and nephews. John F. "Bunt" Fabian, 58, of Ford City, died Saturday, March 18, 2000, at 10:05 a.m. at his residence. He was born July 27, 1941, in Yatesboro, a son of Anna Filisko Fabian of Yatesboro and Frank M. Fabian, who died April 9, 1986. He was a lifelong resident of Ford City and Yatesboro. He was employed as a crane operator by Agway, Kittanning, for 33 years. He was a graduate of Shannock Valley High School, and was a member of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Ford City. He was a member of the Ford City Eagles, Ford City Falcons, and the Ford City Sportsmen's Club, and was past president of the Ford City Football Boosters. He was a former coach for various baseball teams. He was an avid softball and baseball player and bowler, and enjoyed hunting with his family. He is survived by his wife, Judith E. Swast Fabian, whom he married Oct. 5, 1974; his mother , Anna Fabian of Yatesboro; a son, Frank J. Fabian of Ford City; two brothers , Francis M. Fabian of Marion Center and Joseph S. Fabian of Scottdale; a sister, Mary Ann Fabian of Yatesboro; five nephews; and a niece. Jean Donna Herholz, 69, of Penn, died Friday, March 17, 2000, in the Jeannette District Memorial Hospital. She was born Aug. 20, 1930, in Jeannette, a daughter of the late Isaac and Mary Devine Barry. She was a member of the Penn Evangelical Lutheran Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers , Isaac and John Barry; and two sisters , Catherine Brickell and Helen Anderson. She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Robert Herholz; a son, Michael and his wife, Darlene, of Jeannette; three daughters , Pamela Ault and her husband, Robert, of Jeannette, Susan Huffer and her husband, Keith, of North Huntingdon and Terrie Bowman and her husband, Jeff, of Grapeville; eight grandchildren, Mike Ault, Holly Herholz, Kelly Oates, Heidi Herholz, Jeannie Bowman, John Huffer, Paul Bowman and Tyler Huffer; four great-grandchildren, Caide Ault, Makenzie Oates, Caitlin Ault and Brooke Oates; a sister, Irene Long of Jeannette; and a number of nieces and nephews. Walter Kraynek, 78, of Maple View, Speers, passed away Saturday, March 18, 2000, in the Southwestern Nursing Center, Pleasant Hills. Born in Monessen, Dec. 2, 1921, Mr. Kraynek was a son of the late Wasyl and Antoinette Sokol Kraynek. Mr. Kraynek was a member of St. John the Divine Russian Orthodox Church, Monessen, the Charleroi American Legion, Charleroi Senior Center and the Over the Hill Retirement Gang. Prior to retirement, Mr. Kraynek had been employed at Fisher Body as a tool maker. A veteran of World War II, Mr. Kraynek was a staff sergeant in Co. G, 116th Infantry, 29th Division, U.S. Army. Mr. Kraynek was a recipient of the Bronze Star and Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster. In addition to his parents, Mr. Kraynek was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Kraynek; a brother, Samuel Kraynek; and five sisters , Ethel, Martha, Eva, Anna and Olga. Survivors include a son, Bruce and his wife, Judy Kraynek, of Mt. Airy, Md.; a daughter and son-in-law, Lois and Dennis Habrat of West Mifflin; two granddaughters, Jennifer and Brittany Habrat; a brother, Michael Kraynek of Monessen; a sister, Mary Callahan of Silver Spring, Md.; and several nieces and nephews. Glenn S. "Moss" Martin, 74, of New Florence, died Friday, March, 17, 2000, at UPMC Lee Regional. He was born May 6, 1925, in New Florence, a son of the late Reigh and Ruth (St. Clair) Martin. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Joan Martin. He is survived by sisters and brother, Barbara Keeler, and Ollie, wife of Arthur West, both of New Florence, Louise, wife of Ron Birkhimer of Johnstown, Alan "Sam," married to Mary Kathryn Hedges Martin, of Seward; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was a retired employee of U.S. Steel Corp., Pittsburgh, and was a volunteer income tax preparer for the Johnstown Senior Center. He was an avid golfer and Pittsburgh Steelers fan.
