Diane N. Nuchols, 57, of Mt. Lebanon, died Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2000. She was born Aug. 31, 1943, in Wilkinsburg, a daughter of the late Jay and Nora Altman. Wife of the late Michael A. Nuchols. Loving mother of Jeffrey M. Nuchols and Natalie A. Kane. mother -in-law of Annette and Fred. Sister of Wayne Altman, Anita Smail, Carol Larenzi and Janet Reese. Sister-in-law of Paula Carrera. Grandmother of Rachael and Brittany Kane and Chris Abbott-Nuchols. Visitation Saturday and Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the JEFFERSON MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME INC., 301 Curry Hollow Road, Pleasant Hills, where service will be held Monday at 10 a.m. Interment Good Shepherd Cemetery, Monroeville.

Mary A. Oleksak
Shaler

Mary A. Oleksak, 79, died Friday, Sept. 15, 2000, in Forbes Hospice, Pittsburgh. Born Feb. 24, 1921 in Oil City, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Mary Fink. She is survived by her husband, Martin M. Oleksak Sr. of Shaler; a son, Martin Oleksak Jr. of Shaler; three sisters , Ann Radmore, Blanche Kunz and Dorothy Andrako, all of Titusville; four brothers , Bill Rhoades of Kentucky, George Rhoades, of Tennessee, Jim Rhoades of Greensburg and Jerome Rhoades, of Oil City, Pa.; and two grandsons and one great-grandson. She was the past president of American Legion Post 565, past president of Women's Auxilliary, North Hampton Volunteer Fire Co. and a member of the Women's Auxilliary of Troy Hill. Mrs. Oleksak had been employed as a food service worker. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday and Monday in BOCK FUNERAL HOME, LTD., 1500 Mt. Royal Blvd., Shaler. Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in St. Bonaventure Church with Fr. Mark A. Thomas officiating. Interment will be in Mount Royal Cemetery, 2700 Mt. Royal Blvd., Shaler.

Ben T. Palien
Wendel

Ben T. Palien, 84, of Wendel, died Friday, Sept. 15, 2000, at home. He was born March 9, 1916, in Adamsburg (Edna #1), a son of the late Michael and Victoria (Jurzzyk) Palien. Ben was a retired machinist, having worked for Westinghouse Electric in East Pittsburgh for more than 30 years. Ben was a musician his entire life, being involved with the Yukon Button Box Club, The Music Makers Button Box Band and numerous Big Bands in the Pittsburgh and surrounding areas. He was also a member of S.N.P.J. Lodge #87 in Herminie. In addition to his parents, Ben was preceded in death by a sister, Eleanor Balinski. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Martha (Heller) Palien; two daughters , Mrs. Barbara Rothwell and her husband, Donald, of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Mrs. Sandra Ruccio and her husband, George, of Charlotte, N.C.; two brothers , Bruno "Brownie" Palinski and his wife, Mary, of Wendel and Julian Palien and his wife, Doris, of Weaverville, N.C.; a sister, Mrs. Elizabeth "Betty" McLaughlin of McKeesport; three grandchildren, Dawn Leben, George Ruccio and Sarah Huffman; five great-grandchildren, Noah, Shea and Ciannan Leben, Davis and Samantha Grace Ruccio; and numerous nieces and nephews. Friends will be received at the JOSEPH W. NICKELS FUNERAL HOME INC., Herminie, Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Funeral Liturgy will be held in the funeral home Monday at 11 a.m. with Father Lawrence L. Manchas officiating. Interment will follow in Westmoreland County Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Westmoreland Hospice, 532 W. Pittsburgh St., Greensburg, PA 15601.

Paul J. Ray
Pitcairn

Paul J. Ray, 75, died on Saturday, Sept. 16, 2000. Husband of Louise (Hutchinson) Ray; Father of Darryl P. Ray of Tennessee, John W. Ray of Penn Township, and Nettie L. Ray of Pitcairn. Paul is also survived by 8 grandchildren. Friends will be received Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the WM. O. PEARCE FUNERAL HOME, INC., 318 Wall Ave., Pitcairn, where services will be held on Monday at 11 a.m.

Reynold E. "Ray" Ruffo Sr.
Greensburg
Formerly of Youngwood and Scottdale

Reynold E. "Ray" Ruffo Sr., 83, of Greensburg, formerly of Youngwood and Scottdale, passed away Friday, Sept. 15, 2000. He was born Dec. 16, 1916, a son of the late Albert Ruffo and Giovani Mastrangelo Ruffo Santia. He was Catholic by faith, a member of Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church, Youngwood. He was a graduate of Youngwood High School with the Class of 1938. Prior to retirement, he was employed by Detroit Mold Engineering Inc., Youngwood. He was also owner and operator of Ruffo's Bar in South Greensburg for several years. He was a member of the Connellsville Senior Tigers, Youngwood L.O.O.M. 23, Scottdale Elks 777, Touchdown Club of Latrobe and the A and B Club of Youngwood. He is survived by two sons , Albert Ruffo of Bovard and Reynold E. Ruffo Jr. of Youngwood; three daughters , Constance "Connie" Pace of Greensburg, Nina Van Zant and husband, Randall, of Sneedville, Tenn., and Dianne Ruffo of Virginia; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews; and three stepsisters, Mrs. Joseph (Virginia) Sarcelone of Aliquippa, Mrs. Michael (Lizzie) Consi of Greensburg and Mrs. Angelo (Jenny) Farzati of Greensburg. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Christopher Ruffo; two brothers , Earl Ruffo and Floyd Ruffo; two sisters , Viola Placey and Theresa Ruffo Michelle; a stepsister, Theresa Cerilla; two stepbrothers, Chester Santia and Floyd Santia; and his stepfather, Anthony "Tony" Santia. Funeral services will be private, officiated by the Rev. Father Francis Lesniowski of St. Rita R.C. Church, Connellsville. Entombment will follow in Twin Valley Memorial Park, Delmont. Arrangements are being handled by the VITO C. MARTUCCI FUNERAL HOME, 123 S. First St. (West Side), Connellsville. Memorial contributions may be made to the Youngwood Sports Gallery, 17 S. Sixth St., Youngwood, PA 15697.

Eleanor M. (Rebel) Ruppert
Bellevue

On Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2000, in the Vincentian Home, McCandless, Eleanor M. (Rebel) Ruppert, 73, beloved wife of 51 years of Arnold T. Ruppert Sr. of Bellevue. She is also survived by loving children, Rev. Dr. Mark T. Ruppert and his wife, Margaret, of Akron, Ohio and Tod Ruppert and his wife, Mia, of Ross; grandchildren, Rebecca and Ashley Ruppert and Jeremy Ruppert; a brother, Frank J. Rebel Jr. of Englewood, Fla.; a sister, Joann Brown of New Castle; a nephew, Frank J. Rebel III of New Jersey; and a niece, Jean White hurst of Wisconsin. She was preceded in death by her parents, Francis J. and Ruth E. Rebel; and a sister, Jean Rebel. Mrs. Ruppert was a retired employee of the Northgate School District. She was a member of North Hills Chapter 526 OES and had served as judge of elections in Bellevue. Friends invited from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, from 12 to 3 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday and from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Monday in the ORION C. PINKERTON FUNERAL HOME, INC., A Golden Rule Member Firm, 1014 California Ave., Avalon (North Boros). Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in the Riverview United Presbyterian Church, 3505 Perrysville Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15214, where Mrs. Ruppert had been a longtime member, had sung in choir and to which memorials in her memory are suggested. Burial will be in Union Dale Cemetery on North Side.

Porter Hewitt Scott
Fox Chapel

Porter Hewitt Scott, 75, of Fox Chapel, died Thursday, Sept. 14, 2000, in his home. Born Oct. 17, 1924 in Pittsburgh, he was the son of the late Walter A. and Mary Stewart Scott. Mr. Scott was an owner of the Scott & McCune Co., a real estate agency and family business in Pittsburgh established in 1887 by Robert Scott. He was a graduate of Shadyside Academy in 1943, served as a lieutenant with the Army Air Force as a pilot during World War II and is a graduate of Colgate University in 1949 where he was a member of the ATO fraternity. He served as senior warden at the Fox Chapel Episcopal Church for several terms. He was one of the founding members and presidents of the Pittsburgh Ski Club and was co-owner of the Aspinwall Ski Barn and co-founder of the Fox Chapel Canoeing Association. He was also a member of the Fox Chapel Golf Club, Iron City Fishing Club, Fox Chapel Episcopal Church, Greater Pittsburgh Board of Relations and the Society of Industrial and Office Realtors. He is survived by his wife, Jane Edson Scott, two sons , Porter H. Scott Jr. of Hampton and Montgomery S. Scott of Pittsburgh; a daughter, Darcy Scott Branch of Olean, N.Y.; a brother, R. Stewart Scott of Delray Beach, Fla.; and three grandchildren. There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Fox Chapel Episcopal Church, 630 Squaw Run Road East, where the family will receive friends following the service. Interment will be private in Sewickley Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Fox Chapel Episcopal Church, Pittsburgh, PA 15238, Hillman Cancer Center, 532 S. James K. Snyder
White Oak

James K. Snyder, 47, of White Oak, died Thursday, Sept. 14, 2000, at UPMC McKeesport. He was born April 8, 1953, in Mt. Pleasant, a son of the late Glenn D. and Patricia Ann Bienia Snyder. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War, serving in the U.S. Army. He is survived by his wife, Pattie L. Kerr Snyder; two stepsons, CJ Skiles of South Carolina and Ryan Skiles of White Oak; two brothers , Patrick Snyder of Maryland and Michael Snyder of Alverton; and a nephew, Brian Snyder of Michigan. Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday in the FORGIE-SNYDER FUNERAL HOME, 1032 Broadway, East McKeesport. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the funeral home with the Rev. Eric E. Dennis officiating. Interment will follow at Penn-Lincoln Memorial Park.

Harry G. Sprung
Bellevue

Harry G. Sprung, died Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2000. Mr. Sprung was the devoted Father of 12 children and 25 grandchildren. He was a 1939 graduate of St. Mary of the Mount High School, Mt. Washington . He made All-Catholic Basketball, 1939. Mr. Sprung was a 1943 graduate of Mount St. Mary's College, Emmitsburg, Md. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and served as an officer in Europe and the Pacific. He was active in his college alumni group, the Knights of Columbus 1400 and American Legion Post 0756. Harry played the organ and piano and sang in several church choirs with his uncles at one time and was a daily communicant devoted to the Blessed mother and the Holy Rosary. He was married for 50 years to the late Doris Sprung, beloved mother of their 12 children. He was married in March 1999 at the University of Notre Dame, South Bend, Ind. by the Rev. Theodore Hesburgh, president emeritus of Notre Dame, to his high school classmate, the former Winifred Virginia Fleig of Mt. Washington , a widow with eight children and 19 grandchildren in California and Colorado. Friends will be received from noon to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday in the LAWRENCE T. MILLER FUNERAL HOME, 460 Lincoln Ave., Bellevue. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday in the Church of the Assumption, 45 N. Sprague Ave., Bellevue. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Assumption School Development Fund, 35 N. Jackson Ave., Bellevue, PA 15202 or to Mount St. Mary's College, c/o Alumni Office Scholars Program, Phil M. Glade, Director, Emmitsburg, MD 21727. May he rest in peace after his long illness this past year.

Violet Slater Krepps Tomb
Carlisle
Formerly of Mt. Pleasant

Violet Slater Krepps Tomb, 75, of Carlisle, formerly of Mt. Pleasant, died Friday morning, Sept. 15, 2000, at her residence. She was born Nov. 30, 1924, in Mt. Pleasant, a daughter of the late Edward and Margaret Pearl Shaffer Krepps. She was a member of Shepherd of the Valley Methodist Church, Phoenix, Ariz. Prior to her retirement, she was a cafeteria worker for Deer Valley High School, Phoenix, Ariz., and Sears, Colonial Park. She was a graduate of the former Hurst High School. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert G. Tomb, in 1982. She is survived by two sons , Larry Tomb and wife, Alice, of Beaverton, Ore., and Daniel Tomb and wife, Cathleen, of Mesa, Ariz.; two daughters , Patricia Kritikos and husband, John, of Carlisle, with whom she made her home, and Sandra Parrish and husband, Ronald, of Phoenix, Ariz.; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three brothers , Floyd Krepps of Augusta, Ga., Duane Krepps and wife, Julia, of Acme and Ronald Krepps and wife, Carol, of Acme; and a sister, Elma Brechbill and husband, Glenn, of Hayesville, N.C. Friends will be received in the EUGENE G. SALOOM FUNERAL HOME INC., Main Street, Mt. Pleasant, Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 4 to 9 p.m. Her funeral service will be held in the funeral home Monday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Joe Payne officiating. Interment in Mt. Joy Cemetery, Mt. Pleasant, will be private.
