James C. Grimm

James C. Grimm, 86, of Mt. Pleasant, died Friday, Sept. 15, 2000, in Eichers Family Home, Normalville. He was born May 31, 1914, in Mt. Pleasant, a son of the late Harry and Anna Gregor Grimm. He was a graduate of the former Hurst High School in Mt. Pleasant Township. He was a retired coal miner, having been employed at the former Leisenring mines. Mr. Grimm was an associate member of both the Mt. Pleasant Volunteer Firemen's Club and the American Legion of Mt. Pleasant. He was a lifetime member of both the Moose Lodge #27 of Mt. Pleasant and the Slovak-American Society of Southwest. He was also a member of the Bridgeport Sportsmen Club and was an avid fisherman and softball fan. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy V. Pittman Grimm, in 1992; three brothers , Samuel, Harry and Kenneth Grimm; and two sisters , Ethel Randolph and Mabel Lebder. He is survived by a daughter, Linda Albright of Southwest; a son, James Grimm and his wife, Barbara, of Santa Clara, Calif.; four grandchildren, Terry Demeis of Southwest, Eric Nicolette and his wife, Rene, of Donegal, Pam Callais of Santa Clara, Calif., and Shawn Albright and his wife, Amy, of Greensburg; and a sister, Zella Rutherford of Mt. Pleasant. Friends will be received in the BROOKS FUNERAL HOME INC., 406 E. Washington St., Mt. Pleasant, Sunday from 3 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held Monday at 10 a.m. in the funeral home with the Rev. Dr. Dale Porterfield officiating. Interment will follow in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.
James A. Hernon

James A. Hernon, 74, died Sept. 11, 2000 quietly in his sleep at the home of his oldest daughter, Pamela J. Olzewski. Born Sept. 6, 1926 he was the son of the late John L. and Cecelia Lutz Hernon. Mr. Hernon graduated from the St. Scholastica parish school, where he played center for the basketball team. He was a World War II Navy veteran who served for two years. He then earned a two-year business degree from the Duquesne University Business School. He spent most of his working career at Pittsburgh Brewing Co., which he left in 1983 as director of marketing to head up an international sales project for Pabst Brewing Co. in Milwaukee. He retired there and then moved to Charlotte, N.C. Mr. Hernon enjoyed his spending time with his four grandchildren and will be dearly missed by Lisa J. Olzewski Moyer, and her husband, Todd, of O'Hara, Joseph James Olzewski of Charlotte, N.C., and Kelsey E. Ledbetter and Jessica L. Ledbetter, both of Wayne, Pa. In addition to his grandchildren, survivors include three children, Pamela J. Olzewski, and her husband, Joseph A., of Charlotte, N.C., Julianne H. Ledbetter, and her husband, Thomas L., of Wayne, Pa., and James T. Hernon of Milwaukee; a brother, Thomas G. Hernon, and his wife, Helen, of Gulf Breeze, Fla. A Memorial Mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Mary Roman Catholic Church. Burial will be at St. Mary's Cemetery, O'Hara. Margaretta D. Himmler, 90, of Pittsburgh, died Friday, Sept. 15, 2000. Born March 16, 1910 in Pittsburgh, she was the daughter of the late Harry A. English and Amanda Groetzinger. Survivors include her husband, Frank H. Himmler; two daughters , Arleen Ortmann of McCandless and Eleanor Himmler of Denver, Colo.; and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her siblings, Robert E. English, William Blair English, Evelyn Hartman and Lynn R. English. Joseph P. Manon Jr.

Joseph P. Manon Jr., D.D.S., 73, of Monongahela, Carroll Township, died Friday, Sept. 15, 2000, at Monongahela Valley Hospital. He was born May 12, 1927, in Monessen, the son of the late Joseph Paul Sr. and Sylvia L. Griffith Manon. Dr. Manon graduated from Charleroi High School, Class of 1945. He then attended the University of Pittsburgh, earning a B.S. degree in 1951, and graduated in 1953 from the University of Pittsburgh Dental School. After graduation, he briefly taught a radiology course at the university. He practiced dentistry in Charleroi from 1953 until he retired in 1993. He was in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1944 to 1945 and held the rank of captain in the Army Dental Corps from 1955 to 1957. Since 1963, he was a member of the Charleroi Federal Savings Bank Board of Directors and former vice president. He was a member of the Charleroi Presbyterian Church and the Nemacolin Country Club in Beallsville. He also belonged to Phi Beta Kappa fraternity. Surviving relatives are three daughters , Holly Manon Moore and her husband, Robert, of Fairfield, Iowa, Lori Manon Surace and her husband, Mark, of Monongahela, and Jill Manon of Fayetteville, W.Va.; two grandchildren, Kate Marie Runac and Mira O'Keefe-Manon Moore; and a sister, Sylvia M. Hartwell of Warne, N.C. Also survived by two nieces and four nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Kathryn R. "Kitty" Witz Manon, who died March 29, 1999; and a sister, Phyllis Jean Spragg. Friends will be received at the L.M. FRYE FUNERAL HOME INC., 427 W. Rosemary Leasure McIlvaine, 84, of Ventura, Calif., formerly of Greensburg, died Thursday, Sept. 14, 2000. She was the widow of Earl McIlvaine, formerly of South Greensburg. She is survived by her son, Earl McIlvaine Jr. and his wife, Becky, of Oxnard, Calif.; a sister, Elizabeth Lydic of Atlanta, Ga.; and two brothers , Walter Leasure of Greensburg and Robert Leasure of Orlando, Fla. Interment at Ventura's Ivy Lawn Cemetery.

Alice Espe McIlvried, 101, died Thursday, Sept. 14, 2000, in Passavant Retirement Center, Zelienople. Born Feb. 16, 1899 in McCandless, she was the daughter of the late August and Margaret King Espe. Mrs. McIlvried was a first-grade teacher at the former Espe School in the North Allegheny School District. She was a lifetime member and the oldest member of St. John's Lutheran Church of Highland, McCandless. She was a graduate of the former Slippery Rock Normal School, now Slippery Rock University, and Margaret Morrison College of Carnegie Institute of Technology, now Carnegie Mellon University. Survivors include three sons , Howard McIlvried III of McCandless, the Rev. David McIlvried of Erie and Kenneth McIlvried of State College; a sister, Olive Cross of Florida; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her grandson, Timothy McIlvried; a brother, Harold Espe; and three sisters , Florence Ressler, Clara Kina and Pauline Lorig. Mary A. Oleksak, 79, died Friday, Sept. 15, 2000, in Forbes Hospice, Pittsburgh. Born Feb. 24, 1921 in Oil City, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Mary Fink. She is survived by her husband, Martin M. Oleksak Sr. of Shaler; a son, Martin Oleksak Jr. of Shaler; three sisters , Ann Radmore, Blanche Kunz and Dorothy Andrako, all of Titusville; four brothers , Bill Rhoades of Kentucky, George Rhoades, of Tennessee, Jim Rhoades of Greensburg and Jerome Rhoades, of Oil City, Pa.; and two grandsons and one great-grandson. She was the past president of American Legion Post 565, past president of Women's Auxilliary, North Hampton Volunteer Fire Co. and a member of the Women's Auxilliary of Troy Hill. Mrs. Oleksak had been employed as a food service worker. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday and Monday in BOCK FUNERAL HOME, LTD., 1500 Mt. Royal Blvd., Shaler. Ben T. Palien, 84, of Wendel, died Friday, Sept. 15, 2000, at home. He was born March 9, 1916, in Adamsburg (Edna #1), a son of the late Michael and Victoria (Jurzzyk) Palien. Ben was a retired machinist, having worked for Westinghouse Electric in East Pittsburgh for more than 30 years. Ben was a musician his entire life, being involved with the Yukon Button Box Club, The Music Makers Button Box Band and numerous Big Bands in the Pittsburgh and surrounding areas. He was also a member of S.N.P.J. Lodge #87 in Herminie. In addition to his parents, Ben was preceded in death by a sister, Eleanor Balinski. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Martha (Heller) Palien; two daughters , Mrs. Barbara Rothwell and her husband, Donald, of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Mrs. Sandra Ruccio and her husband, George, of Charlotte, N.C.; two brothers , Bruno "Brownie" Palinski and his wife, Mary, of Wendel and Julian Palien and his wife, Doris, of Weaverville, N.C.; a sister, Mrs. Elizabeth "Betty" McLaughlin of McKeesport; three grandchildren, Dawn Leber, George Ruccio and Sarah Huffman; five great-grandchildren, Noah, Shea and Ciannan Leber, Davis and Samantha Grace Ruccio; and numerous nieces and nephews. Marco A. Polito, 70, of Mt. Lebanon, died Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2000. Beloved husband of 50 years to Bernice Mahfood Polito. Brother of Vincent and Anthony Polito. Brother-in-law of Norman and Pat Mahfood. Mr. Polito served in the U.S. Marine Corps in Korea. He was employed 40 years with the B.P. Tracey Company in North Side, Pittsburgh, and five years with Washington Mold in Washington , Pa. Most of his career was spent in various sales positions. Marco was very active in the St. Bernard Catholic Church, where he served as an usher for many years. He also is survived by many nieces and nephews. On Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2000, in the Vincentian Home, McCandless, Eleanor M. (Rebel) Ruppert, 73, beloved wife of 51 years of Arnold T. Ruppert Sr. of Bellevue. She is also survived by loving children, Rev. Dr. Mark T. Ruppert and his wife, Margaret, of Akron, Ohio and Tod Ruppert and his wife, Mia, of Ross; grandchildren, Rebecca and Ashley Ruppert and Jeremy Ruppert; a brother, Frank J. Rebel Jr. of Englewood, Fla.; a sister, Joann Brown of New Castle; a nephew, Frank J. Rebel III of New Jersey; and a niece, Jean White hurst of Wisconsin. She was preceded in death by her parents, Francis J. and Ruth E. Rebel; and a sister, Jean Rebel. Mrs. Ruppert was a retired employee of the Northgate School District. She was a member of North Hills Chapter 526 OES and had served as judge of elections in Bellevue. Porter Hewitt Scott, 75, of Fox Chapel, died Thursday, Sept. 14, 2000, in his home. Born Oct. 17, 1924 in Pittsburgh, he was the son of the late Walter A. and Mary Stewart Scott. Mr. Scott was an owner of the Scott & McCune Co., a real estate agency and family business in Pittsburgh established in 1887 by Robert Scott. He was a graduate of Shadyside Academy in 1943, served as a lieutenant with the Army Air Force as a pilot during World War II and is a graduate of Colgate University in 1949 where he was a member of the ATO fraternity. He served as senior warden at the Fox Chapel Episcopal Church for several terms. He was one of the founding members and presidents of the Pittsburgh Ski Club and was co-owner of the Aspinwall Ski Barn and co-founder of the Fox Chapel Canoeing Association. He was also a member of the Fox Chapel Golf Club, Iron City Fishing Club, Fox Chapel Episcopal Church, Greater Pittsburgh Board of Relations and the Society of Industrial and Office Realtors. He is survived by his wife, Jane Edson Scott, two sons , Porter H. Scott Jr. of Hampton and Montgomery S. Scott of Pittsburgh; a daughter, Darcy Scott Branch of Olean, N.Y.; a brother, R. Stewart Scott of Delray Beach, Fla.; and three grandchildren. There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Fox Chapel Episcopal Church, 630 Squaw Run Road East, where the family will receive friends following the service.
