Laura M. Lake
Shaler

Laura M. Lake, 91, died Friday, Sept. 8, 2000, in Vincentian-Regency Hall Nursing Home. Born Dec. 3, 1908, in Shaler, she was the daughter of the late John and Emma Hieber. Mrs. Lake was a retired operator for Bell Telephone Co. Survivors include a brother, L.J. "Jack" Hieber. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Lake. Visitation and services will be private. Burial will be in Mt. Royal Cemetery, Shaler. Memorial contributions can be made to Glenshaw Valley Presbyterian Church, 1520 Butler Plank Road, Glenshaw, PA, 15116. Arrangements are by BOCK FUNERAL HOME, Shaler.

Jean E. LaPlace
Oklahoma Borough

Jean E. LaPlace, 84, of Oklahoma Borough, died Thursday, Sept. 7, 2000, upon arrival at Citizens General Hospital in New Kensington. Born in Pittsburgh, Jan. 25, 1916, he was a son of the late Aldric and Margaret McGrath LaPlace. He resided in Oklahoma Borough since 1960, and graduated from Carnegie Mellon University with a B.S. degree in electrical engineering. Prior to retirement in 1981, he had been employed by U.S. Steel, Vandergrift, where he was a general foreman since 1959. A World War II veteran, he served in the U.S. Army in the Far East, and received the Silver Star. He was a member of St. James Roman Catholic Church in Apollo; Knights of Columbus, Vandergrift; Slovak Club, East Vandergrift; St. Vincent DePaul Society, Apollo; Apollo Elks Club; and DAV, VFW and American Legion, all in Vandergrift. He was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels in Apollo, and enjoyed gardening. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Timothy LaPlace, in 1972; and eight brothers . He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Inez McInerney LaPlace; two sons , Aldrick "Al" LaPlace of Ligonier and Jean LaPlace of Washington , D.C.; three daughters , Lucy Christoforetti of McMurray, Julia McCutcheon of Allegheny Township and Mary Lukacs of Delmont; 10 grandchildren; and a sister, Margaret Henrick of Minneapolis, Minn. Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday in the CURRAN-SHAFFER FUNERAL HOME INC., 100 Owens View Drive, Apollo. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday in St. James Roman Catholic Church, Apollo, with Father John Sweeney as celebrant. Interment in Calvary Cemetery, Pittsburgh.

A. Virginia Lohr
Greensburg

A. Virginia Lohr, 80, of Greensburg RD5, died Friday, Sept. 8, 2000, in the Integrated Health Services of Greater Pittsburgh in Greensburg. She was born Aug. 9, 1920, in South Greensburg, a daughter of the late James and Orpha Stoner Sterner. Mrs. Lohr was a member for 43 years and former chairperson of the Hempfield Township Democrat Committee, a member and former vice chairperson of the Westmoreland County Democrat Committee. She had served for five years as tipstaff to the Honorable Gilfert M. Mihalich. Mrs. Lohr also served as a Hempfield Township Supervisor, an elected office she held from 1975 until 1987. She was a charter member of the Dry Ridge Garden Club, a member of the First Reformed United Church of Christ, Greensburg, and had served on the board of directors for the Hillview Cemetery Association. She was preceded in death, in addition to her parents, by a brother, Robert Sterner; and a sister, Dorothy Sterner. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Earl F. Lohr; a son, Darwin E. and his wife, Donna Lohr, of Milton, Fla.; a daughter, Bonnie E. and her husband, Edwin E. Poole, of Greensburg RD2; five grandchildren, Nancy V. Lohr of Florida, Amy L. Marco in Italy, Tom D. Lohr of Florida, Karen V. DiOrio and Mark E. Poole, both of Pennsylvania ; eight great-grandchildren, Katie, Karen, Santina and Matthew Marco, Carby Lohr, Bailey Lohr, Sarah and Edward DiOrio; two brothers , James G. and his wife, Marian Sterner, in New Jersey and Owen M. and his wife, Renee Sterner, of Oklahoma ; a sister, Martha and her husband, Ernest Causton, of New Jersey; and several nieces and nephews and aunts. Friends will be received at the BACHA FUNERAL HOME INC., 516 Stanton at Green streets, Greensburg, Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Monday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held in the funeral home Tuesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Edwin J. Fromm officiating. Interment will follow in the Hillview Cemetery, Hempfield Township.

Mary M. O'Shea Makary
Hampton,
Formerly of Penn Hills

Mary M. O'Shea Makary, 80, died Thursday, Sept. 7, 2000 in her home. Mrs. Makary was a member of St. Catherine of Sweden Roman Catholic Church in Wildwood, where she was a lector, eucharistic minister and member of the Women's Guild. She was a volunteer at the Jubilee Soup Kitchen of Pittsburgh and made sleeping bags for the homeless. Survivors include four daughters , Maureen Klein of Texas , Sheila Harrison and her husband, Booker of Wash., Michele Rhule and her husband, Steven of Mercer, Denise Lukas and her husband, Paul of Hampton Township; a son, Mark Makary and his wife, Carole of Mass.; a daughter-in-law, Patricia Makay of Greensburg; and grandchildren, Leah Gray, Rachel and Mark Klein, Jerome Bauer, Mara Harrison, Morgan Rhule, John and Charles Makary, Justin and Amanda Lukas, Erin, Caitlin, Shane, Colleen and Riagain Makary. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John B. Makary, and a son, John Makary. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday in HERBERT R. KING JR. FUNERAL HOME, INC., Route 8 at 2841 Woodland Circle, Allison Park, PA., 15101. Christian Funeral Mass will be 9:30 a.m. Monday in St. Catherine of Sweden Church, East Hardies Road, Wildwood, PA., with the Rev. Gregory Swiderski as celebrant. Burial will be private.

Arlene Hope (Kwall) Mogerman, 62, of Delmont, passed away at her home, Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2000. She was born in Pittsburgh. Preceded in death by her parents, Irwin Kwall and Evelyn (Wolf) Kwall. Survived by her daughter, Jan (Mogerman) Baka and her husband, Michael, of Munhall; her son, Mark and his wife, Barbara Mogerman, of Plantation, Fla.; a brother, Jay Kwall of Charlotte, N.C.; two grandchildren, Jaime and her husband, Donald Rosak, of McKeesport and Grant Mogerman of Florida; and a great-grandson, Donald Rosak III. She was employed as a nursing assistant with the Alterra Clare Bridge Nursing Home. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. MONDAY ONLY at the JOHN L. Ruth J. Myers, 94, of Eugene, Ore., formerly of Greensburg, died Thursday, Sept. 7, 2000, at her home. She was born May 26, 1906, in Greensburg, a daughter of the late John J. and Mary Kerr Zimmerman. In addition to her parents, Ruth was predeceased by two brothers , Paul and John Zimmerman; four sisters , Margaret "Peg" Robinson, Mary Lopes Henry, Eleanor Zimmerman and Loretta "Detzy" Miller; and a grandson, Chris Caruso. She is survived by two daughters , Eleanor Myers-Morring and Donna Myers, both of Eugene, Ore.; and a brother, James Zimmerman of Anaheim, Calif. Friends will be received at the BARNHART FUNERAL HOME, 505 E. Pittsburgh St., Greensburg, Monday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., at which time services will be held in the funeral home with the Rev. Gene R. Stuckey officiating. Interment will follow in Westmoreland County Memorial Park.

Frank J. Rakaczky

Frank J. Rakaczky, 76, of Latrobe, died Friday, Sept. 8, 2000, in Latrobe Area Hospital. Born in Latrobe, Feb. 29, 1924, he was a son of the late Frank and Elizabeth Shanley Rakaczky. He was a member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Latrobe. Prior to retirement, he had been employed by Teledyne-Vasco in Latrobe. He was a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy. He was a member and past commander of Pleasant Unity VFW Post 8643, a past member of American Legion Post 515, Latrobe, and the Latrobe Moose. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Frank James Rakaczky. He is survived by his wife, Jean Ashbaugh Rakaczky; four sons , Dennis Rakaczky and Jack Rakaczky, both of Latrobe, Timm Vanderelli and his fiancee, Meg, of Ligonier and Mark Vanderelli and his wife, Sarah, of Latrobe; two daughters , Diana Rakaczky and her fiance, Gary Swigert, of Illinois and Rose Ann Carter of Tennessee; a brother, Joseph "Jack" Rakaczky of Latrobe; a sister, Vonnie Dombrosky of Enon Valley, Pa.; 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Friends will be received from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday in the JOHN J. LOPATICH FUNERAL HOME INC., 601 Weldon St., Latrobe. Funeral service will be held in the funeral home Monday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. William Ordelt officiating. Interment in St. James Lutheran Cemetery, Youngstown, Pa. military services will be held in the funeral home Monday at 10:30 a.m.

Formerly of Shaler

Blanche Rastetter, 71, died Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2000 in The Caring Place in Franklin. Born March 21, 1929 in Pittsburgh, she was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Lourimore. Mrs. Rastetter was a housewife. She spent many summers with her husband Chris with their family at their Oleopolis Cottage in Venango County. Survivors include her husband, Chris Rastetter of Shaler; and her sons , Ronald Rastetter of Union City, Tim Rastetter of Waynesburg, Darryl Rastetter of Albuquerque, N.M., David Rastetter of Franklin; five grandchildren; and one great grandson. Services and burial were private. Arrangements were made by HERBERT R. KING JR. FUNERAL HOME, Inc. Rt 8 at 2841 Woodland Circle, Allison Park, PA., 15101 (Hampton Township).

Vernon E. Rich
Moon

Vernon E. Rich, 79, died Friday, Sept. 8, 2000, in Sewickley Valley Hospital. Born April 24, 1921 in Pittsburgh, he was the son of the late Vernon C. and Clara E. (Bowes) Rich. Vernon was a lifelong resident of Moon Township. He was a retired supervisor after 40 years with United Airlines (formerly Capital Airlines), a member of St. Margaret Mary Church, a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and Sewickley Valley Hospital, a member of the 55 Plus Club of St. Margaret Mary Church, A.A.R.P. in Moon, M.A.S.C.A. and Coraopolis Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 402. He was a sergeant in the U.S. Army and a veteran of World War II. He also received the following citations: the Purple Heart, Medal of Good Conduct, Medal of European, African, and Middle Eastern, Services Medal with three bronze stars. Survivors include his wife, Laura (Malinowski) Rich of Moon; four sons , Ronald V. Rich and his wife, Carol, of Plum, Donald A. Rich and his wife, Karen, of Allison Park, David V. Rich and his wife, Linda, of Apollo and Dennis J. Rich and his wife, Suzanne, of Moon; eight grandchildren, Tracy Sanders, Jason Rich, Ryan Rich, Kevin Rich, Lindsey Rich, Lori Rich, Brandon Rich and Zachery Rich. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Virginia Friedman. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday in COPELAND'S MOON TOWNSHIP FUNERAL HOME, 981 Brodhead Road. A V.F.W. service will be conducted at 8 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 10, 2000, in the funeral home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday in St. Margaret Mary Church in Moon with Rev. John Ajoob, pastor. Memorial contributions may be made to the Lung Association, 45th and Penn Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15201.

Richard D. Rihn
Shaler

Richard D. Rihn, 48, died Thursday, Sept. 7, 2000 in his home. Born Oct. 26, 1951 in Pittsburgh, he was the son of Gerald and Margaret Rihn. Mr. Rihn was a member of the North Pittsburgh Moose No. 46. In addition to his parents, survivors include his daughters , Carrie Rihn of Somerset, Laura Rihn of Somerset, Mary Rihn of Somerset; a son, James Rihn of Somerset; brothers , Gerald Rihn Jr. and Thomas Rihn; a sister, Donna Muir; and his friend, Teri Lichina. Service will be 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Mary's Church with the Rev. Paul Grunebach as celebrant. Arrangements were handled by BOCK FUNERAL HOME, Shaler.
