George Dilworth Edwards, 89, of Pasadena, Calif., died Friday, Sept. 1, 2000, of a stroke. He was born in Pittsburgh, a son of the late George Dickson Edwards and Pauline Dilworth Edwards, graduated from The Choate School and Princeton, and lived his adult life in California, sharing a home with his survivor, John Valpreda. Also surviving are his sister and brothers , Mary Foster and Richard D. Edwards of Pittsburgh and Howard D. Edwards of Charleston, S.C. Burial will be private and there will be no visitation. Arrangements by H. SAMSON INC., Pittsburgh.

Paul J. Farabaugh
Ross

Paul J. Farabaugh, 72, of Ross, died Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2000. He was the son of Elizabeth and the late Kenneth Farabaugh; beloved husband of Dorothy J. (Ziccarelli) Farabaugh; loving Father of Paul K. Farabaugh of Longmont, Colo., Scott A. Farabaugh of Ross and David J. Farabaugh of Ross; brother of Kenneth Farabaugh of Ross and the late Thomas Farabaugh; grandfather of Melissa, Michelle, David, Scott and Brian. Mr. Farabaugh was a retired Iron Worker of Local No. 3, which he was a member of for 49 years. Friends received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday and from 12 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday in the LAWRENCE T. MILLER FUNERAL HOME INC., 460 Lincoln Ave., Bellevue. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Monday in St. Athanasius Church, West View. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Ross.

Sadie J. Gonda
Smithton

Sadie J. Gonda, 85, of Smithton RD, died Thursday, Sept. 7, 2000, in Frick Hospital, Mt. Pleasant. She was born April 11, 1915, in Smithton, a daughter of the late Robert Robbins and Lucy M. Smith Sethman. She was a postal employee, having worked at the Mt. Pleasant Post Office. She was a member of the Winnett United Methodist Church of Smithton, where she taught Sunday school for many years, and was also a member of the church's Women's Society. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph J. Gonda, on Sept. 12, 1963; three brothers , Smithy, Robert and Marion Sethman; and five sisters , Myrna Mellander, Gertrude Cornell, Orel Pugh, Gladys Williams and Lucy Pearl Sethman. She is survived by a son, Joseph and his wife, Carol Gonda, of Ruffsdale RD; a grandson, Michael Gonda; a granddaughter, Kelly Tully; a great-granddaughter, Smantha; and a sister, Alfretta Swaney of Smithton RD. Friends will be received Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the L.L. BARTHELS FUNERAL HOME INC., Second Street, Smithton. Additional viewing will take place in the Winnett United Methodist Church, Third Street, Smithton, Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m., the time of the service with the Rev. Herbert Peterson officiating. Interment will be in the Barren Run Cemetery, South Huntingdon Township.

Alfred Higgs Sr.
Derry

Alfred Higgs Sr., 87, of Derry, died Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2000, in Edgewood Nursing Center. He was born Nov. 18, 1912, in Duquesne, a son of the late William and Mary Pearson Higgs. He was retired from U.S. Steel Irvin Works. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by three brothers , Floyd, William and Edward Higgs; and two sisters , Catherine and Genevieve Higgs. He is survived by his wife, Rosella Heath Higgs; and his son, Alfred Higgs and his wife, Joan, of Derry RR1; a brother, Richard Higgs of Ohio; two sisters , Dorothy Petrak of West Mifflin and Elizabeth Nickelson of Pennsylvania ; three grandchildren, Cynthia Frayvolt, Michael and Kevin Higgs; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Friends were received Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the McCABE FUNERAL HOME, 300 W. Third Ave., Derry, where blessing services will be conducted Friday at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in Coles Cemetery, Derry.

Joanne Cowan Hough
Scottdale

\Joanne Cowan Hough, 61, of Scottdale RD1, passed away Wednesday evening, Sept. 6, 2000, at her home. Joanne was born April 17, 1939, in Mt. Pleasant, a daughter of the late Walter C. and Esther Henson Cowan, who passed away in February 1970, and February 1990, respectively. Joanne married Jack D. Hough on Aug. 30, 1957. Joanne was a loving wife, mother and grandmother to her family. She was a retired clerk with the former Mt. Pleasant Bakery, where she worked for 27 years. She was also employed by the Country Pie Shoppe for four years. Joanne was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Scottdale and was a graduate of Scottdale High School with the Class of 1957. Joanne is survived by her devoted family; her husband of 43 years, Jack D. Hough; her two sons , Walter W. Hough and wife, Marlene (Rosky), of Mt. Pleasant and David D. Hough and wife, Alicia (Petagno), of North Huntingdon; her five grandsons, Matthew, Timothy, Nicholas, Corey and Joshua; her sister, Margaret Minerd and husband, James, of Dunnellon, Fla.; her mother -in-law, Mary Hough of Scottdale; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Joanne was preceded in death by her twin sister, Joan, in 1939, and sister, Marilyn Kelly, in 1994. Family and friends will be received at the ROBERT B. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

George B. Jones, 52, of Greensburg, died Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2000, in Westmoreland Regional Hospital, Greensburg. He was born April 19, 1948, in Greensburg, a son of the late George R. and Elizabeth Levian Jones. He was a member of the Old Crabtree Sportsmen's Club, S.N.P.J. Club, Roosevelt Club, Carbon Firemen's Club and the South Greensburg Hunt Club. Surviving are his wife, Cynthia L. Jones; sons , Aaron Jones of Virginia and Richard Donoughe of Greensburg; a stepson, Thomas J. Knupp and his wife, Kelly, of Blairsville; brothers , Charles "Sonny" Jones and wife, Janice, of Harrisburg, Donald R. Jones and wife, Lillian, of Latrobe RD2, and Thomas A. Jones and wife, Martha, of Greensburg RD12; sisters , Sarah Venzin and husband, Mario, of Latrobe RD2, Mildred Jones of Greensburg, Anna Mae Sherback and husband, Charles, of Greensburg, Theresa McCorick and husband, Ronald, of Norvelt, Cindy Jones of Greensburg RD12, Bonnie Colello and husband, James, of Greensburg RD12, and Fay Burzawa and husband, Jeffrey, of Greensburg RD11; a grandson, Brian Knupp; aunts, Mary Leonard of Oklahoma and Theresa Cramer of Michigan; and numerous nieces and nephews and cousins. Family and friends will be received at the KEPPLE-GRAFT FUNERAL HOME INC., 524 N. Main St., Greensburg, from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday. Services will be held at the funeral home at 11 a.m. Saturday with the Rev. Robert S. Lash officiating. Interment will follow in St. Clair Cemetery. Angela L. Jupina
Jeannette

Angela L. Jupina, of Jeannette, died Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2000, in the Jeannette District Memorial Hospital. Angela was born in Masontown, a daughter of the late Vincent and Mary Fragale Rentondola. Prior to her retirement, she was employed by the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board, and was a member of the Sacred Heart Church of Jeannette. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Anthony J. Jupina, in 1948; three sisters , Vera Rentondola, Elvera Torri and Josephine Crescenzo; and a brother, Frank Rentondola. She is survived by a daughter, Marlene Vottero, and a son, Anthony J. Jupina and wife, Arleen, all of Jeannette; a sister, Rose Gaslevich and husband, Tony, and two brothers , John Ponterio and wife, Frances, and Jules Ponterio, all of Jeannette; four grandchildren, Anthony Jupina II and wife, Judy, Sherry Beth Andreo and husband, Joseph, Michael A. Jupina and Trina Ann Klasnic and husband, Bill; five great-grandchildren, Gabriella Andreo, Jacquelyn Jupina, Steve, Carly and Taylor Klasnic; an unborn angel on the way; and numerous nieces and nephews. Friends will be received at the JOHN V. GRAZIANO FUNERAL HOME INC., 228 N. Second St., Jeannette, beginning Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday at 10:30 a.m. in the Sacred Heart Church. Entombment will follow in the Greensburg Catholic Cemetery Mausoleum, Hempfield Township.

Anne Kane
West View

Anne Kane, 88, died Thursday, Sept. 7, 2000, in Kane Regional Center, Ross. Born July 31, 1912 in Crabtree, she was the daughter of the late John and Magdalen Templeton Kanuff. Mrs. Kane was a homemaker. She was a member of St. Athanasius Roman Catholic Church, West View and St. Athanasius Christian Mothers. Survivors include three stepsons, William Kane of West View, James Kane of Ross and Patrick Kane of Ross; one sister; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, David Adams; and her second husband, John J. Kane. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in the H.P. BRANDT FUNERAL HOME, 1032 Perry Highway, Ross. Christian funeral mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Athanasius Roman Catholic Church, with the Rev. Robert Norton as celebrant. Burial will be in North Side Catholic Cemetery, Ross.

Jean E. LaPlace
Oklahoma Borough

Jean E. LaPlace, 84, of Oklahoma Borough, died Thursday, Sept. 7, 2000, upon arrival at Citizens General Hospital in New Kensington. Born in Pittsburgh, Jan. 25, 1916, he was a son of the late Aldric and Margaret McGrath LaPlace. He resided in Oklahoma Borough since 1940, and graduated from Carnegie Mellon University with a B.S. degree in electrical engineering. Prior to retirement in 1981, he had been employed by U.S. Steel, Vandergrift, where he was a general foreman since 1939. A World War II veteran, he served in the U.S. Army in the Far East, and received the Silver Star. He was a member of St. James Roman Catholic Church in Apollo; Knights of Columbus, Vandergrift; Slovak Club, East Vandergrift; St. Vincent DePaul Society, Apollo; Apollo Elks Club; and DAV, VFW and American Legion, all in Vandergrift. He was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels in Apollo, and enjoyed gardening. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Timothy LaPlace, in 1972; and a number of brothers and sisters . He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Inez McInerney LaPlace; two sons , Aldrick "Al" LaPlace of Ligonier and Jean LaPlace of Washington , D.C.; three daughters , Lucy Christoforetti of McMurray, Julia McCutcheon of Allegheny Township and Mary Lukacs of Delmont; 10 grandchildren; and a sister, Margaret Henrick of Minneapolis, Minn. Friends will be received Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the CURRAN-SHAFFER FUNERAL HOME INC., 100 Owens View Drive, Apollo. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday at 10 a.m. in St. James Roman Catholic Church, Apollo, with Father John Sweeney as celebrant. Interment in Calvary Cemetery, Pittsburgh.

Mamie A. (Holman) Ligon
Durham, N.C.,
Formerly of Bridgeville

On Friday, Aug. 25, 2000, age 45, of Durham, N.C., formerly of Bridgeville. Mamie was the loving daughter of Mary Martha Holman of Pittsburgh and Reverend Roger Naftzger of El Paso, Texas ; granddaughter of the late Cy and Trula Holman of Bridgeville. Ms. Ligon graduated from St. Frances Academy, Pittsburgh, class of 1973, and attended Kansas City Airline School. She was employed as a purchasing agent for the Sphinx Pharmaceutical Corp. for 10 years. Mamie will be remembered as a compassionate and loving person. Her devotion to community and church will sadly be missed by all. While a member of the Glendale Heights United Methodist Church, Durham, N.C., she served as a childcare provider, an acolyte coordinator and contributed services to homeless families. Her latest church affiliation was with Bethany United Methodist Church where she was a member of the United Methodist Women and actively participated with her children in youth club activities, programs and fund-raisers. While employed by Sphinx, she was the chairperson for the annual March of Dimes Walk-a-thon and tutored a student at a local high school. Mamie prepared meals for families staying at the Ronald McDonald House in Durham. For over 11 years she was active in the E.K. Powe Elementary School PTA where she participated in numerous fundraisers. Mamie loved music and cooking; deserts were her specialty. She was a certified water aerobics instructor and taught classes at South Winds Health Club. In addition to her parents, Ms. Ligon is survived by a son, Daniel; a daughter, Sarah; and a sister Mardi Centinaro of Mt. Lebanon. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2040 Washington Road, Upper St. Clair, with the Rev. Naftzger officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the Dormont Public Library, 2950 West Liberty Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15216. Funeral arrangements made by S.B. Mark W. Macey, 37, of Greensburg RD5 (Humphreys), died Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2000, at Latrobe Area Hospital. He was born May 2, 1963, in Jeannette, a son of Dr. Jack and Jean (Kralik) Macey of Greensburg RD5. He worked as a service technician for Hobart Sales and Service, Greensburg. He was a graduate of Greater Latrobe Area High School, Class of 1981, and was a member of St. Florian Catholic Church, United. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Andrew M. Macey. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Connie S. (Care) Macey; two daughters , Acacia L. and Hannah E. Macey, both at home; three brothers , Andrew M. of Morrisville, Robert F. of Duluth, Minn., and Matthew J. Macey and wife, Kris, of Pittsburgh; a sister, Joanne Baum and husband, Chris, of Derry; maternal grandparents, Paul S. and Mary T. Kralik of Olympia Place, Latrobe; paternal grandmother, Mary (Salko) Macey of Bethlen Home, Ligonier; four nephews; three nieces; four aunts; four uncles; and several cousins. Friends will be received at the GAUT-BACHA FUNERAL HOME INC., Pleasant Unity, Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. A blessing service will be held in the funeral home Monday at 9:30 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass to be celebrated in the St. Florian Catholic Church, United, at 10 a.m. with the Rev. John M. Foriska as celebrant. Interment will follow in St. Florian Cemetery, Mt. Pleasant Township. A parish wake service will be held Sunday at 7 p.m. in the funeral home. The family suggests memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society, Westmoreland Unit, 152 E. Otterman St., Greensburg, PA 15601.
