Julia "Julie" (Weryha) Sawicki, 76, of Baldwin Borough, died April 16, 2010.
A graduate of Taylor Allderdice High School, she retired from Allegheny County after 20 years of service and was a lifelong resident of Pittsburgh.
She was the daughter of the late Andrew and Mary Weryha; wife of the late Robert "Rocky" Sawicki; mother of Kim Onaitis and Theresa (Dwayne) Umphlette; grandmother of Krystal Onaitis, Leslie, Stephanie, Kelly and Robert Umphlette; sister of Alec Weryha and the late Stella Boscia, Mary Hager and Anne Shermeyer. She also is survived by many nieces and nephews.
Arrangements were handled by John F. Slater Funeral Home Inc., Brentwood.

Edith M. Hughes

Edith Margaret Hughes, of Monroeville, was received into heavenly glory Monday, Sept. 12, 2011. She was the wife of the late Ronald M. Ladick. She is survived by her children, Dr. Ronald (Sharon) Ladick Jr., of Beaver County, Dr. Sandra (Mark) Collins, of Ben Avon, Linda (Robert) Rothschild, of Tappan, N.Y., and Jeannine (Arthur) Farina, of Monroeville; as well as her sister, Alice Hughes Woods, of McLean, Va.; cherished friend, Roseann Watt; and five granddaughters, Faith, Hope, Grace Collins and Sabrina and Naomi Rothschild; and her special boy, Puddy. A graduate of the University of Pittsburgh with a degree in journalism, she worked in community newspapers for nearly 65 years, starting at Peabody High School. She trained at the Pitt News and was employed as a writer for the Pekin Times, in Illinois, the Hammond Times, in Indiana, and Gateway Publications, where she served as executive editor for many years. She was working as Community Development Director for Trib Total Media at the time of her death, where she also edited Discover Westmoreland Magazine as well as Caregiver Magazine. Edith was an active member of the Pennsylvania Society of Newspaper Editors. She received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Pennsylvania Newspaper Association, the President's Award from the Press Club of Western Pennsylvania and many Golden Quill, Keystone and Suburban Newspapers of America awards. Burial will be private. All are warmly welcome to attend a celebration of her life for friends and family at 4 p.m. Thursday at Calvary Episcopal Church, with reception to follow. Darryl R. Kunkel, 46, Whitehall, died Friday, Oct. 14, 2011, after a courageous battle with mesothelioma. He was the loving husband of Dianne R. Burkhart-Kunkel; beloved father of Dwane and Morgan Kunkel; loving son of Richard "Dick" (Linda) Kunkel and the late Loretta Jean Kennedy; brother of Michael, Jan (Bill) Herrle, Russ, Nick, Jay (Mary), Shari Kunkel; also survived by many loving in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Robert J. Buehl Sr., 81, of Bethel Park, died Wednesday, April 27, 2011. He was the beloved husband of 60 years to Sylvia J. Buehl; loving father of Jean L. (Rich) Ganther and Robert J. Buehl Jr.; proud grandfather of Paul, Jonathan and Timothy; son of the late Lorretta and Max Buehl; brother of Dolores Evans and the late Donald Buehl; also survived by several nieces and nephews. Betty B. Thomas, 92, formerly of Whitehall, died Monday, April 25, 2011, in Lexington, Ky. She was the wife of the late Robert P. Thomas Jr.; mother of Marty (Douglas P.) Sell, of Lexington, Ky., and Mark B. Thomas, of Pittsburgh; grandmother of Timothy P. Sell, Christa C. (Christopher) Corbin and Teresa (Brian) Yelle; and four great-grandchildren. She was the beloved daughter of the late Frank and Margaret Stanko; loving sister of her five brothers, Frank, Rich, Robert (Pattie), James and Bill (Deb). She also leaves behind many cherished relatives and friends along with her companion cats, Whispurr and Dreamy. Carol was a graduate of St. Francis Academy, Whitehall and Indiana University of Pennsylvania. She was a longtime employee of PNC Bank. There will be no visitation. Burial will be private. Charles E. Ellison, 78, of Whitehall, formerly of Sharpsville, died Monday, May 2, 2011. He was the beloved husband of 51 years to the late Grace Alice (Schmitt) Ellison; loving father of Jennifer L. (Gary) Yost and Janine L. (Jeffrey) Nickel; proud grandfather of Lauren and Daniel Yost and Emily, Allison and Joseph Nickel; son of the late Emmett and Helen (Bolton) Ellison; brother of John "Jabby" (Carole) Ellison and the late June Freedle; also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Jane Helen K. Sipp, 91, of Manassas, Va., passed away Divine Mercy Sunday, May 1, 2011, at the Capital Caring Hospice in Arlington, Va. She was a resident of the Oaks of Wellington in Manassas, Va., and formerly resided at Friendship Village and Whitehall. Mrs. Sipp, wife for 45 years to the late Captain George Sipp, lead bombardier on D-Day, was born in Etna, to Anthony and Mary Keraitis from Panevezys, Lithuania, and lived most of her life in Brentwood and Whitehall. She is survived by her daughter, Jane Mee, of Manassas, Va.; a son; nine grandchildren, Brian, Scott, Nathan, Lauren, Abbey, Brad, Austin, Garrett and Christian; and four great-grandchildren, Ava, Decklan, Asher and Celia. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Karen Pasquini; and is survived by her sister, Betty Ann Navickas. Jane and George were guardians to Edward Sipp and the late Ronald and James Sipp. She was a member of Women's International and the Nationality Rooms at University of Pittsburgh, Overlook Acres Women's Club, Confraternity of Christian Mothers at St. Gabriel Church and the Pennsylvania Chapter of the Eighth Air Force Historical Society.
