Robert Beckjord
Accomplished architect
Robert Beckjord, 58, died suddenly of a heart attack Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2007.
With more than three decades of experience in architectural design, Mr. Beckjord's work received numerous awards and recognition from western Pennsylvania construction trade associations and the Pittsburgh Chapter of the American Institute of Architects.
He most recently was Senior Vice President of Design at Astorno where he contributed to several projects, including PNC Park, the new Children's Hospital of UPMC in Lawrenceville, and the soon-to-be constructed Fred Rogers' Tribute to Children memorial.
Mr. Beckjord was born in Duluth, Minn., and was raised outside of Pittsburgh. He received his bachelor's degree in architecture from Penn State University, and he spent his fifth year abroad in Europe.
Several of the photographs and drawings that he worked on during that time still hang on the walls of his home in Pleasant Hills. He received his master's degree from Yale architecture school in 1972.
That same year he married his high school sweetheart, Joanne, and began his career in Philadelphia, but they relocated to Pittsburgh in 1977 where they worked and raised their family for the past 30 years.
Mr. Beckjord was a devoted community servant, and was active in his local municipality and his church.
His community government service includes participating in the establishment of a borough comprehensive plan, planning and implementing capital improvement projects, and establishing annual budgets, which have all reinforced his core belief that our built environment and architectural design have a strong and tangible effect on people's lives.
For the past three years, he served as an elder and the building and grounds trustee at the Pleasant Hills Community Presbyterian Church.
An excellent golfer, Bob enjoyed playing whenever he had the chance, and traveled frequently to enjoy his favorite pastime. He expressed his love of art in all forms in his private life as well. Mr. Beckjord was a gifted artist from a young age, and loved visiting museums and watching films with his family.
Though Mr. Beckjord took great pride in seeing his designs take shape across the city, he was happiest when surrounded by his family.
He is survived by two children, Ellen and Stephen, who feel blessed to have been so well loved by their father.
Ellen and her husband returned to Pittsburgh in late July, and Mr. Beckjord spent much of his free time in August helping them to renovate and prepare their new home.
In any of their lives' endeavors, Mr. Beckjord nurtured and encouraged his children with great care and skill, and with a generous spirit.
He is also survived by his friend, confidant and loving wife of 35 years, Joanne Beckjord, and by his sister Patricia Beckjord of St. Charles, Ill.
