Lewis Ondis II
Bettis employee of 52 years

Lewis Ondis II, 74, of Pleasant Hills, died Sunday, Jan. 6, 2008.

He was born in Athens, Ohio, on Jan. 9, 1933, the son of the late Lewis and Pauline Ondis.

Mr. Ondis graduated from Ohio University with a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics, pursued graduate studies at the University of Pittsburgh and was a member of the Acacia fraternity.

He was a principal mathematician and scientific computer programmer at the Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory for 52 years. He was among the first to test and use the now-standard Fortran language developed by IBM for scientific computing.

For many years, he was the lead developer at Bettis for Monte Carol computer programs used in the design and analysis of naval nuclear reactors, including the Nautilus (the first nuclear submarine) and the first commercial nuclear power plant in Shippingport, Pa.

He served on the national council of ACM, the Association for Computing Machinery, the world's first educational and scientific computing society.

Mr. Ondis was a past master and trustee of the Pleasant Hills-Guthrie Masonic Lodge, past president of the Pleasant Hills Lions Club, elected to the Pleasant Hills Borough Council for 21 years and a member of Pleasant Hills Community Presbyterian Church.

He was an avid reader and enjoyed music, theater, traveling and playing golf and bridge.

He was the husband of 34 years of the late Helen Ondis; father of Catherine (Donald) Solberg of Chevy Chase, Md., and Victoria (Stewart) Pemberton of London; brother of Antoinette Haenel of Chapel Hill, N.C., Roderick (Mary) Ondis of Nicholson, Pa., and Priscilla (Verner) Johnson of Centerville, Ohio.

Arrangements handled by Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home.

Brian Lydon
Elroy Elementary principal

Brian Patrick Lydon, 37, of Baldwin, died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2008.

He was the son of John and Margaret Lydon.

Mr. Lydon graduated from Brentwood High School in 1988 and from Duquesne Univer-sity with a master's in education.

He was in his second year as principal at Elroy Elementary School, Brent-wood. Arrangements by John F. Slater Funeral Home.

Mary Claire Troke
Motel owner

Mary Claire (Arnoni, Schmitt) Troke, 90, of Altamonte Springs, Fla., formerly of Brentwood, died Friday, Jan. 4, 2008.

She was the daughter of the late M.C. and Adeline Arnoni; wife of the late William Schmitt and Ernest Troke; mother of Mary (Jeanne) Schmitt Burnett of Winter Park, Fla. and Donna (Lee) Schmitt Schaffer of Healdsburg, Calif.; stepmother to Jim Troke of Trenton, Fla.; grandmother of Erika Schaffer, Paul Troke, Todd Troke and Kim Troke; sister of the late Lena Augustine, George Arnoni, Carmanini Arnoni and Helen Grace.

Her brothers, Ceasar and Albert Arnoni, were owners of South Hills Disposal and other businesses. Her surviving sister is Jean Shinsky of Lecanto, Fla.

Mrs. Troke was a former member and active volunteer at St. Sylvester Church and part owner and manager of the Jamaica Inn Motel on the Gulf Coast in Dunedin, Fla.

She was a member, board member and volunteer in Florida for the Christian Women's Association, Advis-ory Board for the Disabled, her Catholic church and her condominium association.

She won an Outstanding Volunteer Award from Orange County Public Schools.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to a charity or library. Condolences can be sent to her daughters at P.O. Box 541112, Orlando, FL 32854-1112.

Rosella Yochum
Of Baldwin

Rosella Yochum, 93, of Baldwin, died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2008.

She was the wife of the late Thomas Yochum; stepmother of Thomas (Theresa) Yochum and Dorothy McCartney; daughter of the late Richard and Rose (Weise) Shaw; also survived by four stepgrandchildren and eight step great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Angel Fund at St. Sylvester Church, 3754 Brownsville Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15227.

Catherine Geiser
Brentwood resident

Catherine "Cathy" Geiser, 48, of Brentwood, died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2008.

A 20-plus year employee of the McDonald's in Brentwood, she is the daughter of Gladys and the late William Murphy; sister of Donald Geiser and the late Daniel and Dennis Geiser; aunt of Christopher Geiser.

Doris Zupkow
Great-grandmother

Doris Zupkow, 75, of Jefferson Hills, died Jan. 3, 2008.

She was the mother of Kenneth (Bonnie) Zupkow, Nancy (Don) Koenig, Mary Beth Zupkow and the late Sharon Gascoine; grandmother of eight; great-grandmother of three; also survived by sisters Lois Yeager, Mary (Don) Waxter and brother Raymond (Jackie) Kampmeyer.

Janice Russell
married 47 years

Janice (Parne) Russell, 71, of Baldwin Borough, died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2008.

She was the wife of 47 years to Robert; mother of Vicky (Randy) Beveridge and Diane (Chris Clowes) Russell; grandmother of Ryan and Timothy Beveridge; sister of James Parne.

Father of two

Sylvester "Whitey" Fess, 95, of Baldwin, died Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2008.

He was the husband of the late Ann Fess; father of John and Thomas Fess; grandfather of Tiffany Fess; great-grandfather of Alice and Madeline Smith; brother-in-law of Barbara Gardill; Norma (Gardill) Boyett, Ray Schuler and the late Ellwood McGinnis. Also survived by nieces and nephews.

Dahn Ober, 52, of Whtiehall, died Saturday, Aug. 2, 2008.

He was the husband of Debby (Nairn) Ober; father of Dahn Lewis, Desirae and Deidra Ober; son of the late Dahn and Eleanor (Kweder) Ober; brother of Lynn Tate, Jann Freund, Jayni Bonacuro and Mark Ober. Also survived by granddaughter Maia Grace Ober.
