Lamoine F. ‘Lemon’ Zimmerman

Lamoine Fred “Lemon” Zimmerman, 82, of 404 W. 16th St., Tyrone, died Monday, Oct. 13, 2008 at his residence.
He was born Dec. 3, 1925 in Williamsburg, Pa., a son of Robert H. and Velda K. (Miller) Zimmerman.
He was married July 28, 1951 in Tyrone to Anna Liese Ruth Werner, who died Jan. 19, 2008.
He is survived by a daughter Karen A. Zimmerman of Tyrone and son Karl G. Zimmerman of State College. A brother Ronald Zimmerman of Warriors Mark and sister-in-law Virgie Werner, and God-son Doug Castagnola of Tyrone. There are three nieces and four nephews, and pets Friskie and Nya.
He was preceded in death by his wife Anne, son Kim H. in December 1994, brother William D. in November 1955, nephew Mark Werner in July 1967, nephew Wayne Werner in November 1994, and brother-in-law Herbert Werner in June 2008.
He was a graduate of Turtle Creek High School and served in the U.S. Navy on the U.S.S. Savannah during WWII. He was a member of the First English Lutheran Church, Tyrone, where he served as head usher; a member and tiler at B.P.O.E. Lodge No. 212 for many years; a PIAA basketball official for 30 years, a Penn State fan and football parking attendant for 43 years, he was an advocate of ASPCA and could be counted on to brighten everyone’s day.
He retired from the Chicago Rivet & Machine Co. after 38 years of service.
Funeral services will be held Friday, October 17, 2008 a 11 a.m. at the Tyrone First English Lutheran Church with Rev. Susan H. Yatta and Pastor Todd Templeton officiating. Interment will be at Grandview Cemetery, Snyder Twp.
Friends will be received at the Derman Funeral Home, Inc., Tyrone, on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., where an Elks Memorial Service will be held at 6:45 p.m.

Anna Mae Blaska

Anna Mae Blaska, 79, of Tyrone died Friday, October 10, 2008 at 10:55 p.m. at The Village at Morrison’s Cove, Martinsburg.
She was born July 10, 1929 in Tyrone, a daughter of George W. and Lois (Houck) Kustanbauder. She was married to Peter R. Blaska who preceded her in death on December 18, 1961.
Surviving are a son Peter L. Blaska and wife Dawn of Lititz, two grandchildren, Christopher Blaska and wife Carol of Warriors Mark, Kendra of Port Matilda, a great-granddaughter Alexa, a sister Jane Burtner and husband Rev. Roger of Brady, Texas, daughter-in-law Sue Blaska of Tyrone and a niece Georgeanna Ott of Tyrone. She was preceded in death by a son G. Michael and a sister Winifred L. Keller.
Mrs. Blaska retired in 1979 from the attendance office of Tyrone Area High School following 11 years service. She was previously employed as a clerk at the FBI in Washington, D.C.
She was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church, Anderson-Denny VFW Ladies Auxiliary and was a 1947 graduate of Tyrone High School.
She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, crossword puzzles, watching television and reading the Bible.
Memorial services will be held Tuesday October 14, 2008 at 7 p.m. at Feller Memorial Home with Rev. Charles Fitzgerald officiating. Interment at Blair Memorial Park will be at the convenience of the family. Friends will be received at the funeral home on Tuesday from 6 p.m. until the time of services.

Leonard L. ‘Lenny’ Ashcraft

Leonard L. “Lenny” Ashcraft, 65, of 1564 Logan Ave., Tyrone, died Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2008 working in the woods of Taylor Twp., Centre Co.
He was born Oct. 22, 1942 in Coshocton, Ohio the son of Charles Ashcraft.
He was married Oct. 21, 2007 to Alice Jean (Campbell) Haupt, who survives.
He was the father of several children and step-children, with several grandchildren and step-grandchildren.
There are two half-brothers, Tim and Mark Ashcraft of Ohio.
He attended the Rock of Ages Church, was a member of the Tyrone Sportsman’s Club, and was always willing to help others.
He was popular, doing gigs as “Jingles the Clown.”
He was a woodsman and served as an Army Medic during the Vietnam era.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008 at 11 a.m. at the Derman Funeral Home, Inc., Tyrone, with Pastor Mike Baney officiating. Interment will be at Grazierville Cemetery.
Friends will be received at the funeral home on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, contributions to the family through the Derman Funeral Home, 1200 Lincoln Ave., Tyrone, Pa. would be appreciated.

Joseph W. Barley, Sr.

Joseph W. Barley, Sr., 76, of 511 First Ave., Altoona, died Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2008 in Tyrone.
He was born Jan. 1, 1932 in Altoona, the son of the late Joseph H. and Priscilla M. (Eller) Barley.
He was married to Mary L. Keefer, who died in June of 1997.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Hilda Dougal.
Surviving is one son, Joseph W. Barley, Jr. of Altoona; sisters Linda Rhoades, Jenny Showalter, and Clarabelle Huber, all of Bellwood, and Mary Welch of Columbia, Maryland; brothers Samuel of Bellwood, and Charles and Paul of Altoona.
Best friend Linda Clark of Tyrone also survives.
He was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church and attended Bellwood-Antis High School. He was a retired car repairman from Conrail.
Funeral services will be held Friday, Oct. 10, 2008 at 8 p.m. at the Vincent J. Good Funeral Parlor in Bellwood, with Pastor Robert Coddington officiating. Interment will be at Blair Memorial Park.
Friends will be received at the funeral home on Friday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society.

Rebecca E. Beaver

Rebecca E. Beaver, 77, of Bellwood died Tuesday evening, October 7, 2008 at Altoona Regional Health System, Altoona Hospital Campus.
She was born October 27, 1930 in Bellwood a daughter of the late Thomas M. and Grace N. (Gorsuch) Lee. She married Donald L. Beaver, Sr. on September 1, 1950 in Winchester, Va.
Surviving are her husband; son: Donald L., Jr. and wife, Pam of Bellwood; daughter: Cyndee L. Simpson and husband, Robert of Bellmeade; grandsons: Josh Beaver and wife, Annie of Bellwood and Troy Beaver of Pittsburgh; great grandson: Julien; and a brother: William G. Lee of Bellmeade.
She was preceded in death by brothers: Richard M., John W., Robert C. and James T. Lee.
Becky was a 1948 graduate of Bellwood-Antis High School and attended Altoona Bible Institute.
Mrs. Beaver was a member of First Baptist Church, Altoona. She was a former Sunday school teacher, teen girls youth leader and church choir member. Becky was a volunteer for the Children’s Evangelism Fellowship, Greenwood. She enjoyed making and was known for her hand painted wooden folk art.
Mrs. Beaver was the first person who learned to use the IBM keypunch computer in Blair County.
When Mrs. Beaver’s children were teenagers, the Beaver home served as a gathering place for the teens of the community.
Becky especially enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren.
Friends will be received from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, October 9, 2008 and 10-11 a.m. Friday, October 10, 2008 at Jon C. Russin Funeral Home, Bellwood.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home with Pastor Tyler W. Pepper officiating.
Interment will be at Logan Valley Cemetery, Bellwood.
Contributions in Becky’s memory may be made to First Baptist Church 1209 17th St. Altoona, PA 16602.

Berdene P. Burket

Berdene P. Burket, 72, of Tyrone went to be with her Lord Wednesday, October 8, 2008 at 10:10 a.m. at Valley View Home, Altoona.
She was born December 2, 1935 in Bellwood, a daughter of DeForrest and Marie (Boyer) Golden. On May 20, 1995 in Tyrone she married Ralph “Sonny” Burket. She was previously married to Warren L. Walk Sr. who survives in Tyrone.
Surviving are her husband, a daughter Cindy Brockett and husband Ken of Tyrone, 2 sons Warren L. Walk Jr. and wife Julie of Tyrone, Russell D. Walk and wife Lori of Tyrone, 14 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, step-children Sandy Yagiela, Roxie, Shelly, Denny, John and Jim Burket. 2 sisters, Beverly Gross and Doris Diehl both of Tyrone and 3 brothers, Ray, Darrell and Richard Golden all of Tyrone.
Mrs. Burket retired in 1996 as a nurse’s aide from Bon Secour Hospital. She had been a nurse’s aide for 22 years with previous service at Epworth Manor and Tyrone Hospital.
She had attended the Spring Mount Church of the Brethren where she was a member of the Woman’s Fellowship Group.
Berdene’s greatest love was serving Jesus her Savior. Her greatest joys came from her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She shared a special bond with her sister Beverly, who was her best friend. She enjoyed her dogs and deer and going shopping.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 11, 2008 at 1 p.m. at Spring Mount Church with Rev. Warren A. MacEachern officiating. Interment will follow at Spring Mount Cemetery. Friends will be received at the Feller Memorial Home on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and on Saturday at the church from noon until the time of services.
Memorial gifts may be made to the Spring Mount Church of the Brethren, c/o Jane Sangrey, 2184 Ridge Road, Tyrone, Pa. 16686.

Debra Ann Williams

Debra Ann Williams, 53, formerly of Altoona, and a resident of Mt. Laurel Nursing Home, Clearfield, died Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2008 at the nursing home after a lengthy illness.
She was born January 17, 1955 in Tyrone, a daughter of the late John M. and Ida Charlotte (Stebbins) Williams.
She is survived by two sons: John Williams, II of RD 5, Tyrone and Dwayne Coble of Roaring Springs, Pa.
Three grandchildren also survive, along with brother Gerald M. Williams of Tyrone; sisters Phyllis Smith of Cincinnati, Ohio, and half-brother Tom Miller and wife Sue of Florida.
There are several nieces and nephews.
An aunt and uncle, Mary and Paul Swales and family of Clearfield were very supportive for Debra and her family over many years.
She was preceded in death by a sister Jean Banks and husband Sam of Florida, and a niece Jacqueline Banks and brother-in-law Charles Smith.
She attended the Fuoss Mills Alliance Church, she loved her dogs, and enjoyed camping and knitting.
There will be no viewing.
A memorial service will be held Friday, Oct. 10, 2008 at 1 p.m. at the Derman Funeral Home, Inc., Tyrone, with Pastor Richard Wood officiating. Inurnment will be at Blair Memorial Park.

Silas Robert McFarland

Mr. Silas Robert McFarland, age 78, of RD 4, Tyrone, died Monday, October 6, 2008 at Mt. Nittany Medical Center, State College. He was born November 22, 1929 in Antis Township, the son of S. Carl and Ruth M. Benson McFarland. On June 22, 1952 at the First Methodist Church he was married to Donna J. Waite who survives. Also surviving are two children - Pamela Jo, wife of Donald Beaver of Bellwood, and Silas R. McFarland and wife Peggy of Harrisburg; four grandchildren - Joshua Beaver (Annie) of Bellwood, Troy Beaver of Pittsburgh, and Jared and Tyler McFarland, both of Harrisburg; and one great-grandchild, Julien Beaver. He is also survived by a brother, Charles “Tim” (Norma) McFarland of Hendersonville, NC, and a sister, Lethian Baur of California. He was preceded in death by a brother, Richard.
Mr. McFarland was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church where he had served as an usher, Sunday School superintendent, of the board of trustees, and on the administrative council. He was a graduate of Bellwood-Antis High School Class of 1947. He served in the U.S. Army from March 1951 until June 1953. He had been employed as a machinist at Chicago Rivet and Machine Company, retiring in April 1992 after 47 years service. He was a member of B.P.O.E. No. 212 and the Sinking Valley Country Club.
Bob loved being in the outdoors, dancing and music, and watching his grandsons play sports. There wasn’t anything that he couldn’t fix. He was one of the early shareholders of New Pig.
Funeral service for S. Robert McFarland will be Wednesday, October 8, 2008 at 11 a.m. at the Richard H. Searer Funeral Home Inc. with Pastor Charles J. Fitzgerald officiating. Interment will follow in Blair Memorial Park. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of service.
Contributions in his memory are requested to the Alzheimer’s Association, 3544 N. Progress Avenue, Suite 205, Harrisburg, PA 17110.

Vyrl J. Wilson

Vyrl J. Wilson, 78, of RD5 Box 228, Tyrone, PA, died Friday morning, October 3, 2008 at her residence.
She was born April 10, 1930 in Tyrone, the daughter of the late Howard and Mary (Perry) Noel. She was the last of her immediate family.
She married William E. Wilson, Sr., who survives at home.
Also surviving is a son, Dennis Wilson of Altoona, and two grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, William E. Wilson, Jr., in 1985.
Mrs. Wilson was of Methodist faith and previously worked at Big Yank in Tyrone as a seamstress.
She enjoyed camping, crocheting, and knitting, and was a life member of The Glendale Sportsman Club.
Friends will be received from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, October 5 at the Vincent J. Good Funeral Parlor in Bellwood.
Funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the funeral parlor with Pastor Peggy Bonsell officiating.
Interment will be at Blair Memorial Park.
