Virginia Kay Getz

April 9, 2004

Miss Virginia Kay Getz, age 52, of Alexandria, VA and a former Tyrone resident died Wednesday, April 7, 2004 at 1:40 p.m. at Virginia Hospital Center, Arlington, VA.

She was born August 19, 1951 in Tyrone, the daughter of the late Warren E. and Caroline E. Friday Getz Sr. She is survived by two sisters, Barbara George and Darlene Singler, both of Tyrone, one brother - Lee and wife Joyce of Altoona, sister-in-law Patty Getz of Tyrone and these nieces and nephews - Shelly Getz-Ray, Tom Getz, Joe Getz, JoAnna Maceno, Vicki Bilka, Bob Getz, Jennifer George, Megan George, Todd George, Ryan George and several nieces and nephews in CA, OR and MT. She was preceded in death by three brothers - John, Tom and Ed.

She was a graduate of Tyrone High School Class of 1969 and received a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration and Economics from the University of Maryland and was employed as an Information Technology Specialist for the Department of Agriculture. She was a very active member of the Nativity Lutheran Church in Alexandria, VA where she was a member of the choir, volunteered to assist needy children and held numerous offices in the Trivent (A.A.L.). When in Tyrone she was a member of the First English Lutheran Church. She was affiliated with a group of volunteers that provided tutoring services for local elementary students and enjoyed masters swimming, working with youth, spending time with her family and friends and the companionship of her dog “Sam”.

Funeral service for Miss Getz will be held Monday, April 12, 2004 at 11 a.m. at the First English Lutheran Church with Pastor T.M. Talbot-Moses officiating. Interment will be made in Baughman Cemetery. Friends will be received at the Richard H. Searer Funeral Home Inc. on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and at the church from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday. Contributions in her memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, Blair County Unit, 1004 N. Juniata Street, Hollidaysburg, PA 16648.

Nicholas S. Daugherty

April 7, 2004

Nicholas S. Daugherty, 22, of Alexandria, VA, died April 1, 2004 as a result of injuries received in a two vehicle accident in Washington, DC.

He was born August 8, 1981 in Washington, DC, a son of S-Sgt Paul J. Daugherty who died November 28, 1995 and Tammy DeArmitt who survives in Poolesville, MD.

Also surviving are a daughter, Jordan Taylor Daugherty of Alexandria. His grandparents, Paul and Joan Daugherty of Port Matilda and Janet and Arthur McGuire of Wisconsin. His great-grandmother Ethel Leberfinger of Hollidaysburg; step-mother Bianca Daugherty of Alexandria; step-father, Ken Campbell of Poolesville, MD; two step-brothers Julian and Kevin Durrell of Alexandria; a half-sister Cassandra Campbell of Poolesville, MD and companion Kathleen Moran of Alexandria.

Mr. Daugherty was employed in construction for John Durrell of Alexandria. He had attended Mt. Vernon High School, Alexandria and was a graduate of Lincoln Technical Institute of Maryland in auto technology. He was of the Catholic faith and had been a member of the Boy Scouts.

Memorial services will be held Saturday April 10, 2004 at 2 p.m. at Feller Memorial Home with Samuel Reese officiating.

Memorial gifts may be made to a fund set up for Nick’s daughter Jordon c/o Burke and Hervert Bank and Trust, 8738 Cooper Road, Alexandria, VA 22309.

Walter M. “Oatie” Hampton

April 7, 2004

Walter M. “Oatie” Hampton, 75, of 113 N. Sixth Avenue, Juniata died Tuesday, April 6, 2004 at 7:45 a.m. at his residence.

He was born July 22, 1928 in Tyrone, a son of Roy W. and Sarah E. (Hetrick) Hampton. On April 9, 1977 at Wesley Memorial Church, Juniata he married Joan D. Davensizer.

Surviving are his wife, two daughters, Tammie Mills and husband Donnie of Altoona, Melodie Hockenberry and husband Jeffrey of Altoona, five grandchildren, four sisters, Mary Bartlebaugh, Treva Bridges, Martha Hampton all of Grazierville, Mildred Bezilla of Kirtland, Ohio and two brothers, Roy of Grazierville and Wilson of Tyrone. He was preceded in death by a sister Marian Wilson and a brother Lester.

Mr. Hampton retired in 1991 from the sauce plant at DelGrosso Foods, Tipton following 32 years service. He was a life member of the Anderson-Denny VFW Tyrone and was one of the original founders of the McIntire Hunting Camp, Tyrone.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War serving as a corporal in Germany. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.

Funeral services will be held Friday, April 9, 2004 at 11 a.m. at Feller Memorial Home with Rev. William Ice officiating. Interment will follow at Blair Memorial Park. Friends will be received at the funeral home on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and on Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of services.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Blair County Hospice, 201 Chestnut Ave., Altoona, PA 16601.

Paul M. Phillips

April 5, 2004

Paul Marlin Phillips, 75, of 2120 Columbia Ave., Tyrone, PA and a recent resident of Epworth Manor, died at 7:55 a.m. Monday, April 5, 2004 at Tyrone Hospital.

He was born April 8, 1928 in Tyrone, the son of Paul Clement and Ada Mae (Hamer) Phillips.

He was married September 20, 1953 in Tyrone to Marian Loretta Spicer.

He is survived by his wife and two daughters: Fawn Joy Phillips of Leesburg, VA and Hope K. Shaffer and her husband Brian of Tyrone.

Two grandsons: Jesse and Brandon Shaffer. Two sisters: Jonelle Dunn of Archbold, Ohio and Bonalyn A. Bathurst of Halifax, PA.

He was a member of the Fuoss Mills Christian Missionary Alliance Church.

He had graduated from the Williamsport Technical School and was a veteran of WWII, serving in the Army and the Air Force.

He was employed at Corning Glass Co., State College for eight years and Hanlin and Wilson Co., Tyrone for one year.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 7, 2004 at 8 p.m. at the Derman Funeral Home, Inc., Tyrone, with Dr. Rev. Robert Ludrowsky officiating. Interment will be at Black Oak Cemetery, RD Port Matilda, PA.

Friends will be received at the funeral home on Wednesday 2-4 and 6-8.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the Fuoss Mills Christian and Missionary Alliance Church, RD 5 Box 68, Tyrone, PA 16686.

John A. Dunkel

March 31, 2004

John A. Dunkel, 90, of 698 Gardner Lane, Tyrone, PA died at 8:45 a.m. Tuesday, March 30, 2004 at the Altoona Hospital.

He was born Aug. 22, 1913 in Osceola Mills, a son of Edward M. and Rhoda May (Buck) Dunkel.

He was married Nov. 14, 1934 at Pine Grove Mills to Tressa May Morrow, his wife for 68 years. She preceded him in death Aug. 13, 2003.

Surviving are two daughters: Barbara (Robert) Kasubick of Aurora, Ohio and Judy I. (James) Smith of RD 3, Tyrone.

Five grandchildren: Susan Wilmen, Butch Kasubick, Mark Kasubick, Robin Mayer and John Smith.

Five great-grandchildren: Kristen, Ben, Josh, Jacob and David.

One brother - Edward M. Dunkel, Jr. of RD 3, Tyrone.

He was preceded in death by four sisters and one brother.

He was a former member of the Columbia Ave. Methodist Church. He was a member of the Bald Eagle Sportsmen’s Club where he ran the fish hatchery for the PA Fish Commission for 50 years. A member of the Bald Eagle Sportsmen Rifle and Trap Team and the Tyrone Sportsmen Trap Team. He was a PA Deputy Game and Fish Warden for 15 years, was an avid hunter and fisherman, gardener and raised honey bees for years.

He was a member of the National Rifle Association and served on the Tyrone Area School Board in the 1960s. He was recently recognized by the State of Pennsylvania for his perfect voting record of 50 years.

He retired in 1976 as a Track Foreman from the PA Railroad after 40 years service.

Funeral services will be held Friday, April 2, 2004 at 11:30 a.m. at the Derman Funeral Home, Inc., Tyrone, with Rev. Jay Jones officiating. Interment will be at Bald Eagle Cemetery. Friends will be received at the funeral home on Thursday 2-4 and 7-9.

William R. Jones

Mr. William R. Jones, age 91, a guest at Epworth Manor and formerly of 907 Jefferson Avenue, Tyrone, died Sunday, November 30, 2008 at the Tyrone Hospital. A complete obituary and funeral arrangements will be announced at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of the Richard H. Searer Funeral Home Inc.

Lucas E. DelBaggio

Lucas E. DelBaggio, 23, of Altoona died Sunday, November 30, 2008 in Tyrone.
He was born December 4, 1984 in Altoona, a son of Leonard R. DelBaggio and Beth E. Warfel.
Surviving are his father and wife Brenda of Altoona, his mother of Altoona, a sister Teresa C. of Altoona, a brother Marcus of Altoona, grandfather Benedict Sr. of Tyrone, and step-sisters Sarah Latchford and Shannon Davis both of Tyrone.
He was a member of St. Mark Catholic Church, Altoona and the Sinking Valley Country Club.
He had been employed for the past eight years at Logan Beverage, Tyrone. He was a 2003 graduate of the Blair County Christian Academy and had attended the Allegheny College of Maryland and Penn State Altoona majoring in Business.
Luke enjoyed skiing, snowboarding, baseball, basketball, and was an avid golfer.
Funeral Mass will be held Wednesday, December 3, 2008 at noon at St. Matthew Catholic Church, Tyrone with Fr. James Coveney Celebrant. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family.
Friends will be received today from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Feller Memorial Home.

Raymond W. McCully

Raymond W. McCully, 69, of RD3 - Box 422, Tyrone, PA died Monday, November 24, 2008 at the Tyrone Hospital.
He was born November 1, 1939 at Morrisdale, PA a son of David C. and Martha Harriet (Beverege) McCully.
He was married February 28, 1962 in Altoona to Ruth E. Fawks who died February 25, 2005.
Suriving are daughters Vanessa McClellan and friend Ken Young of Altoona; Nancy Miller (Bob) of Tyrone; Mary Ringler (Silas) of Claysburg; and son Raymond W. McCully, Jr. of RD3, Tyrone.
Six grandchildren and a brother Larry McCully of RD3, Altoona also survive.
He left behind his beloved two cats.
He was a graduate of Altoona High School in 1958 and served three years in the U.S. Army.
He was a Nascar fan and an avid CB Radio operator.
Mr. McCully was a member of the Tyrone Sportsmen’s Club and had retired from his last employment as a truck driver at Teledyne Co-ordinators of Irwin, PA.
Funeral services will be held Friday, November 28, 2008 at 11 a.m. at the Derman Funeral Home, Inc., Tyrone, with Reverend Robert Kennedy officiating. Interment will be at Allport Cemetery, Clearfield County, PA.
Friends will be received at the funeral home on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Paul Lloyd Frye

Paul Lloyd Frye, 86, of 212 E. 12th St., Tyrone, died Thursday, November 20, 2008 at the Altoona Hospital from injuries of a truck and pedestrian accident in Tyrone.
He was born September 2, 1922 at Vail, Snyder Twp., Pa. a son of James and Maude (Sones) Frye.
He was twice married, first to Joyce Vaughn, then to Ethel E. Miller, both deceased.
He is survived by sons Paul J. Frye (Lois) of Port Matilda, Pa., Norman V. Frye (Allison) of Salt Lake City, Utah, and daughters Terry Ann Kramer (Richard) of Royal Oak, Mich. and Donna Wallace (Danny) of Tyrone.
Also, six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A brother, Charles Frye of Youngstown, Ohio, several nieces and nephews and his faithful dog “Charlie”.
He was preceded in death by four sisters and two brothers.
He was a member of the Port Matilda Methodist Church.
He served with the U.S. Army during WWII with the 1st Cavalry Division in the South Pacific being awarded with five Bronze Stars and one Bronze Arrowhead. He was a member of the Tyrone VFW No. 4559, the Hookies Fire Co. and the Port Matilda American Legion. He enjoyed playing the guitar and harmonica.
He retired in September 1987 as Plant Operator at Warner Co., Pemberton with 17 1/2 years service, and previously in Food Service at Penn State Univ. for 12 1/2 years and at the McFieldy Brick Co., Port Matilda.
Funeral services will be held Monday, November 24, 2008 at 11 a.m. at the Derman Funeral Home, Inc., Tyrone, with Pastor Robert Smith officiating. Interment with Military Honors will follow at Blair Memorial Park.
Friends will be received at the funeral home on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.
Contributions in his memory may be given to the Central Pa. Humane Society, 1837 E. Pleasant Valley Blvd., Altoona, Pa. 16602.
