Harry E. ‘Woody’ Dickson

Harry E. “Woody” Dickson, 82, of Baldwinsville died Sunday, June 10, 2007 peacefully at the Francis House.
He was an Army Veteran serving during WWII. He was a member of the Baldwinsville First Presbyterian Church and a member of the Baldwinsville Rod and Gun Club.
He retired in 1989 from General Electric in Syracuse as a Radar Specialist after 32 years of service.
He was a scout master, serving Boy Scouts of America for over 30 years in Buffalo, Ithaca and Onondaga County.
He was the original chairman the Lysander Parks and Recreation.
He was instrumental in the first re-introduction of wild turkey to Thompkins and Cortland County areas.
He was pre-deceased by his son Lynn E. who died in 1966 and his parents Frank and Cathrine (Herzog) Dickson.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Jane; one daughter, Beverly Sherman of VA; two sons, Dennis (Karen) of MD. and Brian (Cathy) of Baldwinsville; two sisters, Lorena Lannen of FL. and Shirley Ann Dickson of PA; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Memorial Services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Baldwinsville First Presbyterian Church, 64 Oswego Street.
Burial will be private. Calling hours will be held Wednesday, June 13, 2007 from 4-7 p.m. at Gates Funeral Home, Inc., 29 West Genesee Street, Baldwinsville.

Verna E. Dean

Miss Verna E. Dean, 93, formerly of the Tyrone Pa. House and a a resident of Centre Crest Nursing Home, Bellefonte for the past two years, died Saturday, June 9, 2007 at the Centre Crest Home.
She was born September 14, 1913 in Tyrone, the daughter of George Washington and Margaret E. (Liedig) Dean.
She is survived by four nieces and one nephew: Darlene Schoch and husband Joe of Pleasant Gap, Bonnie Triplett and husband Dave of Baltimore, Md., Vince Dean and wife Judy of Grazierville, Sheila Hoffer and husband Jim of Grazierville and Susan Dean and 15 great-nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Lloyd and Arthur Dean.
She was a longtime member of the Church of the Good Shepherd.
She was a kind and loving aunt and always enjoyed visiting with family.
She retired in 1975 from Big Yank Corp., Tyrone, as a Trimmer and Inspector after 32 years service.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 12, 2007 at 4 p.m. at the Derman Funeral Home, Inc., Tyrone, with Rev. Norman E. Huff officiating. Interment will follow at Eastlawn Cemetery.
Friends will be received at the funeral home on Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m.
Donald E. McFarland

Donald E. McFarland, 76, of 4044 Warriors Mark Path, Warriors Mark, died unexpectedly May 11, 2007 at his home.
He was born September 13, 1930 in Tyrone, a son of the late Helen Estright McFarland.
On July 24, 1959 in Cumberland, Md. he married Lois Ann Nearhoof, who survives.
Also surviving is one daughter, Cindy, and husband John Sarver of Warriors Mark.
Mr. McFarland served in the United States Air Force from 1951 to 1955. He enjoyed bowling.
He retired from the Penn State University mail department in 1986, following 24 years service.

Mary Matilda (Weaver) Miller

Mary Matilda (Weaver) Miller died May 12, 2007.
She was born May 23, 1909 in Coburn, PA, the only and beloved daughter of Zwingli A. and Nora (Kahler) Weaver. She attended high school in Spring Mills, taking the train from Coburn to Spring Mills on a daily basis. Young teacher-trainees from Penn State were some of her teachers. While there she was a member of the girls’ basketball team. She later attended a business school in Williamsport and was trained as a secretary.
She was married in 1929 to G. Russell Miller of Millheim. They had a daughter and a son. Surviving are a daughter Doris and husband Robert Hamilton of Menifee, CA, and a son Robert and wife Rhoda of Tyrone, four grandchildren, Cindy Hamilton, Rick Hamilton and wife Holly, Deborah Carroll and husband Wayne and David Miller, three great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, and her Persian cat, Scampi.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1984.
She was for 60 years a homemaker in Millheim, active in church and community. She was an avid bowler and kept in touch all her life with members of her bowling league.
In 1990 she moved to Tipton (Tyrone). Badly crippled by arthritis, she spent her final years in a wheelchair. In spite of her difficult situation, she refused to surrender and continued to go out and about as often as possible.
In addition to bowling, her earlier interests included sewing, cooking, bridge, gardening, reading, and collecting antique dishes. She had a lively interest in people. She was a loving and much-loved mother and grandmother.
From childhood she was a church member, in recent years of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Millheim, and an associate member of the Lutheran Church in Tyrone.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Blair County Humane Society.
Funeral service will be held Wednesday, May 16, 2007 at 2 p.m. at the Steven R. Neff Funeral Home, 120 W. Main Street, Millheim, with Rev. James K. Rill, officiating. Friends will be received at the funeral home from 1-2 p.m. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery, Millheim.
Jean Mathers

Jean Mathers, 72, of Tyrone RD2, died Friday, May 11, 2007 at her home.
She was born May 18, 1934 in Altoona, a daughter of the late George J. and Bertha C. (Greenawalt) Meghan. She married Robert S. Mathers on December 26, 1953 in Cumberland, Md.
Surviving are her husband; children: Jeffrey L. and wife Janice of Juniata, Michele Bollinger and husband James of Bellwood and Terry L. of Glendale; daughter-in-law: Tracy Mathers of Tyrone; grandchildren: Jessica Cooley and husband Craig, Melissa Mathers, Robert A. “Buddy” Mathers, Amanda Conrad, Bryce Mathers and Zack, Jacob and Mara Bollinger; great-grandchildren: Ty Hagen and Jeremy Cooley; aunt: Viola Gingery and cousin: Nancy Sitman.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary C. Mathers and a son, Robert E.
She attended Olivet Baptist Church, Bellwood.
Jean enjoyed fishing and bowling as a member of the Thursday morning coffee bowling league. She was an avid shopper and especially enjoyed shopping with her best friend, Nancy.
Jean loved spending time with her family and was an expert at spoiling her grandchildren.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 15 at Jon C. Russin Funeral Home, Bellwood. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 16, 2007 at the funeral home with Pastor Kenneth Beichler officiating.
Interment at Blair Memorial Park, Antis Township.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to American Cancer Society Blair County Unit, Hollidaysburg or Home Nursing Hospice, Altoona.
William A. Reader

William A. Reader, 36, of 300 W. 18th Street, Tyrone, died Sunday, May 7, 2007 at his residence.
He was born April 5, 1971 in Altoona, a son of Albert and Donna (Nelson) Reader. On April 10, 1999 at St. Benedict Catholic Church, Carroltown, he married Melissa Jarvis.
Surviving are his wife, a son Logan at home, his parents of Tyrone, two brothers: Michael and wife Brande of Thornton, Colorado and Albert III of Pittsburgh, a niece Brooklyn Reader of Thornton and a nephew Brayden Mennett of Johnstown. He was preceded in death by a niece Hope Reader.
Mr. Reader was formerly employed at Ray Burial Vault Company, Tyrone for a number of years.
He was a 1989 graduate of Tyrone Area High School and was veteran of the US Army with service in the early 1990s. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 9, 2007 at 7 p.m. at Feller Memorial Home with Rev. Douglas Mottin officiating. Friends will be received at the funeral home on Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m.
Charles W. \'Bill\' Boyer

Charles W. “Bill” Boyer, 81, of 608 West 14th Street, Tyrone, died Saturday, February 17, 2007 at the Altoona Regional Health System, Altoona Hospital Campus.
He was born October 21, 1925 in Tyrone, a son of Norman R. and Myrtle K. (Biddle) Boyer, Sr.
He was married August 2, 1952 at the former Evangelical United Brethern Church by Rev. Budd R. Smith to Joyce L. Hoffman.
He is survived by his wife, a daughter Judith Ann Meiss and her husband Carl of York Haven, PA and a son James N. Boyer and his wife Marie of Fort Washington, PA.
He is survived by three grandchildren, Travis C. Meiss of Manheim, PA, and Steven C. and Eric J. Boyer of Fort Washington, PA.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Norman R. Boyer, Jr.
He was a graduate of Tyrone High School in 1943. He served in the U.S. Navy during W.W. II as a Gunners Mate 2nd Class in the Pacific on a L.C.I. from 1943 to 1946.
He was a lifetime member of the Christ United Methodist Church where he was a member of the Men’s Bible Class and former member of the Adult Chancel Choir and the Men’s Glee Club. He was a former Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 27, a member of American Legion Post 281, and the Tyrone V.F.W. Post 4559. He was also a member of the U.S.S. Landing C.I. National Association.
He was an avid reader, especially W.W. II and Civil War history.
He retired in 1990 as a tester in the Quality Control Lab of Tyrone Westvaco Corp. after 34 years service.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, February 20, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. at the Derman Funeral Home, Inc., Tyrone, with Rev. Barry Neal officiating. A Flag Presentation will be by members of the American Legion and V.F.W. Interment will be at Bald Eagle Cemetery.
Friends will be received at the funeral home on Monday from 2-4 and 7-8 p.m.

Charlotte Marie Vaughn

Charlotte Marie Vaughn, 79, formerly of Pennsylvania House, Tyrone, died at 11:50 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2007, at Valley View Home, Altoona.
Born Sept. 6, 1927, in Tyrone Forge, she was a daughter of the late Mark and Kathryn (Kipe) Hatch. She was united in marriage to Sam Weidle, Richard Sayers and John S. Baird, all of whom preceded her in death (Mr. Baird on April 17, 1974). A former husband, Clyde Vaughn, survives in Clarksville, Tenn.
Mrs. Vaughn is also survived by a daughter and son, Geraldine Beschler and husband, Sam; and John W. Baird and wife, Sandy, all of Tyrone; and eight grandchildren, Brenda Fogelman and husband, Tim, Port Matilda; Lisa Kirkpatrick and husband, Tim, Tyrone; Donna Angelo and husband, Lorne, Tyrone; Heather Nicole Rupert, Petersburg; Jacob Lee Baird, Tyrone; and Jessica Ann, Jeremy Stevenn and Shelby Richard Flasher.
She is also survived by three sisters, Leona Waite, Arizona; Caroline Snyder, Shippensburg; and Geraldine Kocher and husband, Melvin, Graysville.
She was preceded in death by an infant grandson, Lucas William Baird, March 16, 1977; two sisters, Fayelda Zimmerman; and Janet Hatch, in infancy; and four brothers, Raymond, Clarence, Edward and Elwood Hatch.
Mrs. Vaughn attended the Lower Spruce Creek Presbyterian Church.
She worked in Huntingdon first as an aide at the former Norris Nursing Home and then at the Arrow Shirt Factory as a seamstress. She later went to work in the environmental services department at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital from Feb. 10, 1969, until her retirement Sept. 26, 1980.
Most of her life, Mrs. Vaughn resided in Petersburg. She moved to Pennsylvania House, Tyrone, in 2000 and then to Greentree Village in 2002 and to Valley View Home, Altoona, in December 2003.
She enjoyed crocheting, gardening and traveling.
Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 18, at the Cutright Funeral Homes, with the Rev. Randy Willis officiating. Interment was made at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 19, in the Franklinville Cemetery, Spruce Creek.
