Sister M. Modesta Dzuban
McCandless

Sister M. Modesta Dzuban, 93, died Friday, Sept. 1, 2000, in Vincentian Home, McCandless. Sister M. Modesta entered the Vincentian sisters of Charity from Visitation Parish in Mt. Pleasant, Pa. She earned a bachelor's degree in education from Duquesne University and taught in elementary schools for 39 years in the dioceses of Pittsburgh, Greensburg and Altoona-Johnstown. She spent 16 years doing social work and eight years teaching Catholic Christian Doctrine before retiring to the Motherhouse in 1987. She then worked in the Host Baking Room until she became ill in 1994. She moved to the Vincentian Home last October. Survivors include a sister, Elizabeth Hubert of Norvelt, Pa.; and nieces and nephews. Friends will be received from 1 to 9 p.m. Monday and from 9 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Tuesday in the Vincentian sisters of Charity Motherhouse, 8200 McKnight Road, McCandless. Christian Funeral Mass will be after visitation in the Motherhouse Chapel. Burial will be in the sisters ' Cemetery, McCandless. Memorial contributions can be made to the Vincentian sisters Ministry Fund.

Ruth A. Greenawalt
of North Huntingdon Township

Ruth A. Greenawalt, 93, of North Huntingdon Township, formerly of Sewickley Township, died Thursday, Aug. 31, 2000, at the home of her daughter, Joyce Ferber, in Navarre, Fla. Born Jan. 7, 1907, in Sewickley Township, she was a daughter of the late John S. and Amanda Phillips Highberger. She was a member of the Hilltop United Methodist Church, Madison, where she was a former Sunday school teacher, having served in that capacity for 60 years. She also was a member of the Gleaners Class of the church, The Herminie Harmoneers and the Herminie Senior Citizens. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur A. Greenawalt, in 1971; a son, Raymond A. Greenawalt; two grandsons, Jason and George Greenawalt; a granddaughter, Marcy Messner; a sister, Edna Highberger; and two sons -in-law, Robert Pinkney and Warren Goodman. Surviving are four sons , Wreford Greenawalt of West Newton RD, Jacob Greenawalt of Hutchinson, Howard Greenawalt of Navarre, Fla., and Daniel Greenawalt of North Huntingdon; four daughters , Phyllis Pinkney of Geneva, Ohio, Elizabeth Goodman and Joyce Ferber, both of Navarre, Fla., and Donna Budai of Batavia, Ohio; 33 grandchildren; 55 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; two brothers , Howard and Paul Highberger, both of Herminie; and two sisters , Mae Heltebran of Altoona and Edith Steiner of Herminie. Friends will be received at the BEATTY-RICH FUNERAL HOME INC., Route 136, Madison, Sunday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Additional viewing will be held at the Hilltop United Methodist Church, Madison, Monday from 10 to 11 a.m., the time of service with her pastor, the Rev. Lawrence Raughley, officiating. Interment will follow in the Madison Union Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, family suggests donations be made to the Hilltop United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 206, Madison, PA 15663, or Westmoreland Hospice, 532 W. Pittsburgh St., Greensburg, PA 15601, or the American Diabetes Association, 1701 N. Beauregard St., Alexandria, VA 22311.

Nancy Hartung-Ross
Magnolia, Texas

Nancy Hartung-Ross, 38, of Magnolia, Texas , died Monday, Aug. 28, 2000, after a courageous two-year battle with breast cancer. Born in Greensburg, March 6, 1962, she was a daughter of William and Mildred Hartung of Jeannette. Nancy graduated from Hempfield Area High School in June 1980. She attended the following universities: University of Pittsburgh in April 1984 with a B.S. in Psychology; Indiana University of Pennsylvania in August 1986 with an M.A. in Industrial and Labor Relations; and South Texas College of Law in May 1997 with a Doctor of Jurisprudence. Nancy was admitted to the Supreme Court of Texas Board of Law Examiners in November of 1999. Nancy received several awards, including South Texas College of Law - W.J. Williamson Legal Writing Award in Fall 1992, South Texas Law Review - Wayne W. Thomas Memorial Writing Award 1994-1995, South Texas College of Law Order of the Lytae in December 1994, South Texas College of Law Awards in American Jurisprudence Legal Research & Writing I, Legal Research & Writing II and Labor Law. Nancy was employed with Shell Oil Company/Equica Services for 14 years. In addition to her parents, Nancy is survived by her loving husband, John L. Ross Jr.; parents-in-law, Judy and John Ross Sr. of Homer City; sister, Maryann Acito and her husband, Joseph, of Pittsburgh; brother-in-law, Robert Ross and his wife, Jamie, and niece, Taylor, of Homer City. A graveside service will be held Tuesday, Sept. 5, at 1 p.m. at Greenwood Cemetery, Indiana, Pa., with the Rev. Robert Goossen officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Crown of Texas Hospice, 100 I-45 North, Suite 240, Box 103, Conroe, TX 77301, or to The University of Texas , MD Anderson Cancer Center, P.O. Lillian E. Harvey
Shaler

Lillian E. Harvey, 83, died Friday, Sept. 1, 2000, in UPMC Passavant, McCandless. Born Sept. 28, 1916, in Pittsburgh, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Mary McCarrell. Mrs. Harvey was a homemaker. Survivors include her husband, Ralph R. Harvey Jr.; and a daughter, Jean E. Panza of Shaler. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday in NEELY FUNERAL HOME, 2208 Mt. Royal Blvd., Shaler, where services will be at 11 a.m. Monday with the Rev. Leonard Pate officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Royal Cemetery, Shaler.

Helen R. Owens
Hopewell

Helen R. Owens, 81, of Hopewell, died on Thursday, Aug. 31, 2000, in Ohio Valley Hospital, Pittsburgh. Born Oct. 25, 1918 in Altoona, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Wilbur and Nettie Libold. Mrs. Owens was a resident of Hopewell for 52 years. She retired from Aliquippa Hospital Dietary Department. Survivors include four sons ; John A. Owens Jr. of Beaver, James E. Owens and wife, Karen, of Lancaster, Thomas E. Owens and wife, Millie, of Pittsburgh and Richard P. Owens of Hopewell; three daughters ; Mary Lou Shaheen and husband, Ray, of Kissimmee, Fla., Margaret Musolin and husband, Thomas, of Raccoon Township and Maureen Byko and husband, Jeff, of Zelienople; one sister, Shirley Vogel of Philadelphia, Pa.; and numerous grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John A. Owens. Services are private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: Forbes Hospice, Development Office, 320 E. Esther Cupp Parks, 79, of Cranberry, died Friday, Sept. 1, 2000, in Sherwood Oaks Retirement Community. She was born Nov. 25, 1920 in Mars, a daughter of Harry Cupp and Margaret Lurting Cupp. She is survived by her husband, the Rev. Dr. Elmer "Jack" Parks; two daughters , Mary Kathleen Young of Pickerington, Ohio and Eleanor Chain of Canton, Ohio; a son, Richard Lewis Parks of Mercer, Pa.; a sister, Eleanor Robb of Beaver Falls, Pa.; and five grandchildren. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday and 2 to 4 p.m. Monday in SIMONS FUNERAL HOME, INC., 7720 Perry Highway, Pittsburgh, Pa., www.simonsfuneralhomeinc.com. Augusta C. Resnik
Bethlehem

Augusta C. Resnik, 95, of Bethlehem, formerly of Pleasant Unity, died Thursday, Aug. 31, 2000, in Kirkland Village in Bethlehem. She was born April 3, 1905 in Cleveland, Ohio, a daughter of the late Anton and Gertrude (Sigmund) Mauser. She was a member of St. Vincent Basilica Parish, Latrobe, and the Slovene National Benefit Society. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Vincent J. Resnik; a son, Frank E. Resnik; six brothers , Adolph, Albert, Edward, Charles, Herman, and William Mauser; and three sisters , Ann Dermotta, Frances Resnik, and Pauline Renko. She is survived by a son, Robert K. Resnik of Easton; a daughter, Helen A. Resnik of Bethlehem; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Henry Mauser of Pittsburgh; a sister, Albina Kinik of Belle Vernon; and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be private. Friends are invited to a Funeral Mass to be celebrated in the St. Vincent Basilica Crypt, Latrobe, at 10:30 a.m. Saturday with the Rev. Athanasius C. Cherry, O.S.B., as celebrant. Everyone should go directly to the church. Interment will follow in St. Vincent Cemetery, Unity Township. Arrangements by GAUT-BACHA FUNERAL HOME INC., Pleasant Unity.

Blanche L. Satulina

Blanche L. Satulina, 81, of Latrobe, died Friday, Sept. 1, 2000, in the Loyalhanna Care Center, Derry Township. She was born April 4, 1919, in Loyalhanna, a daughter of the late Louis and Priscilla Mascher Satulina. She was retired from Latrobe Area Hospital. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Virginia Everhart, and a brother, Robert R. Satulina. Survivors include four sisters , Ida and Helen Satulina of Latrobe, with whom she made her home, Mrs. Daiselene Frichtel of Port Richey, Fla., and Mrs. Lena Gretok of Wilmerding; and a number of nieces and nephews. Friends will be received Saturday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the JOHN J. LOPATICH FUNERAL HOME INC., 601 Weldon St., Latrobe, where a blessing service will be at 1 p.m. Sunday. Interment Unity Cemetery, Unity Township.

Sitar; brother of Jaclyn Begly and Brittany Sitar; grandson of Mary Milinski and the late Stanley Milinski and Roberta H. (Yates) Redd and the late John G. Sitar; great-grandson of Helen M. Yates. Omer `Van' VanBalen

Omer "Van" VanBalen, 87, died Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2000 in Florida Hospital, Orlando, Fla. Born June 8, 1913 in Carnegie, he was the son of the late Adrian M. and Estelle Harney VanBalen. Mr. VanBalen was the owner of Van's East Side Grocery on Route 18 on the east side of Conneaut Lake from 1956 to 1971. Survivors include his wife, Margaret Henney VanBalen; four daughters , Joyce Yut of Canton, Ohio, Ann VanBalen of Bozeman, Mont., Ginie Baumann of Hermitage and Sharon Chisholm of Sanford, Fla.; two sisters , Victorine Banner of Shippenvale, Pa., and Lauren VanBalen of Conneaut Lake; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Jerry VanBalen. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday and Monday in SCHELLHAAS FUNERAL HOME, 388 Center Ave., West View. Christian Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. Boniface Church of Holy Wisdom Parish. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Ross. Roberta A. "Bobbie" Zappone, 53, of Latrobe RD3 (Marguerite), died Friday, Sept. 1, 2000, in I.H.S. at Mountain View, Unity Township. She was born June 30, 1947, in McKeesport, a daughter of Moses Elliott of Wooddale and the late Emma J. (Curry) Ferranti. She was a member of the Church of the Brethren, Southwest Greensburg. In addition to her Father , she is survived by her husband, John S. Zappone Jr.; three sons , William Elliott of New York, Robert Thomas Murray of Florida and Anthony Zappone at home; a daughter, Mrs. George (Jaime) Oden of Ruffsdale; five grandchildren, William, Dustin, Karen Marie, Markus and Andrew; four sisters , Mrs. Marshall (Sharon) Hoffman and Mrs. Ernest (Kathleen) Shifko, both of Greensburg, Mrs. William (Judith) Hill of Tennessee and Mrs. Ronald (Joyce) Mekic of Whitney; a brother, Monte Elliott and wife, Cindy, of Greensburg; five nieces; and five nephews. Friends will be received at the GAUT-BACHA FUNERAL HOME INC., Pleasant Unity, Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Monday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Additional viewing will be held in the Church of the Brethren, Southwest Greensburg, Tuesday from 10 to 11 a.m. at which time services will be held with the Rev. William A. Waugh officiating. Interment will follow in St. Clair Cemetery, Hempfield Township.
