JOSEPH A. MURPHY
SALISBURY, Pa. - Joseph A. Murphy, 64, of 51 Union St., Salisbury, died Friday, Dec. 12, 1997, at the Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, Ohio.
Born Nov. 15, 1933, in Meyersdale, he was a son of the late Joseph E. and Evelyn (Johnson) Murphy. He also was preceded in death by a sister, Shirley E. Murphy.

Mr. Murphy was a retired jobsetter for General Motors Corporation, Parma, Ohio. He was a member of UAW Local 1005 and the Shunk Run Gun Club.

Surviving are his wife, Joann (Farner) Murphy; a son, Larry J. Murphy and wife, Susan, Lakewood, Ohio; a granddaughter, Jessica; two brothers, Carl E. Murphy, Berlin, and Bernard J. Murphy, Meyersdale; and a sister, Deborah Shouse, Ga.

Friends will be received at the Newman Funeral Home, Inc., Salisbury, on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Tuesday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. David E. Fetter officiating.

Interment will be in Salisbury cemetery.

Expressions of sympathy may be directed to the American Heart Association.

BETTY M. PLETCHER
SALISBURY, Pa. - Betty M. Engle Pletcher, 71, of 121 Corliss St., Salisbury, passed away Sunday, Oct. 19, 1997, at Meyersdale Medical Center.
Born Jan. 1, 1926, in Salisbury, she was the daughter of the late Leroy O. and Olive (Shumaker) Engle. She also was preceded in death by her husband Lloyd G. Pletcher; and a brother Clyde E. Engle.

Mrs. Pletcher was a homemaker and an avid bingo player.

Surviving are a daughter, Beverly Hochard and husband Clarence, Frostburg; and a daughter-in-heart, Patricia Ackerman and husband Ron, with whom she resided in Meyersdale; five brothers, Denver R. Engle, Charles E. Engle, and Francis L. Engle, all of Salisbury, Franklin D. Engle, Mount Pleasant, Pa., and Wendall Hall Engle, Olmstead Falls, Ohio; two sisters, Rohama Joyce Dietke, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, and Evelyn Jean Engle, Meyersdale; two grandsons, Christopher Hochard, Frostburg, and Jason Ackerman, Meyersdale; and one nephew whom she raised, Ronald Engle, Salisbury.

Friends will be received at the Newman Funeral Home, Salisbury, on Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. and on Tuesday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Wednesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. David Fetter officiating.

Interment will be in Salisbury cemetery.

JUDITH McCULLOUGH
GREENCASTLE, Pa. - McCullough, Judith, 58 a resident at 12920 Locust Level Road, Greencastle, Pa., passed away Sunday, Nov. 9, 1997, at her home.
Born May 8, 1939, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of Clyde and Mabel Margaret Robertson.

Mrs. McCullough was a graduate of Fort Hill High School, class of 1957. She was a former employee of Tri-State Oxygen, McMullen Hwy., Cumberland.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by a brother, John Robertson; her husband, Michael; her two sons, Michael, Jr., and Richard; daughters-in-law, Kathy and Jennifer. Also by grandchildren, Shay, Michael, Sarah, Jennifer, and Amy; also by her one great-grandson, Seth, "the Bubba."

Friends will be received in the Hafer Chapel of the Hills Mortuary, 1302 National Hwy., LaVale, on Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m.

Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the funeral home.

Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park.

ELEANOR L. MCGOWAN
ESPYVILLE, Pa. - Eleanor L. McGowan, 65, of Espyville, formerly of Rochester, died Wednesday, Aug. 13, 1997, at the Horizon Hospital System, Greenville Campus.
Born Sept. 9, 1931, in Frostburg, Md., she was the daughter of the late John D. and Beatrice (Brode) Fatkin.

Mrs. McGowan was a member of the IBEW 201 Beaver, Pa. She was retired from the Westinghouse Electric Corp., Beaver, in 1991 after 23 years of service. She was of the Protestant faith.

Surviving are her husband Donald E. McGowan, Espyville; two sons, William Skidmore and Gary Skidmore, both of New Brighton; one daughter, Beverly Star, Vanport; one step daughter, Susan Hopton, Pittsburgh; four grandchildren; four step grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Muriel Trkulja, Aliquippa; and three brothers, Ronald Fatkin, Frostburg, Md., Zane G. Fatkin, Willingsboro, N.J., and Lawrence W. Fatkin, Elizabethtown, Ky.

Friends will be received at the Gabauer Funeral Home, 848 Sunflower Road, Rochester, on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday at 11 a.m. with the Pastor Ronald Kronk officiating.

Pallbearers will be Julius Carey, Darin Carey, Bruce Opel, Gary Wilhelm, Bill Bowen, and Bob Alt.

Interment will be in the Sylvania Hills cemetery, Rochester.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Kidney Fund, 6110 Executive Blvd., Suite 1010, Rockville, MD 20852.

FRANCIS J. MEHLE
CUMBERLAND - Francis Joseph Mehle, 78, of Cumberland, died Saturday, Nov. 22, 1997, at Memorial Hospital.
Born Nov. 2, 1919, in Norristown, Pa., he was the son of the late Joseph George and Catherine Marie (Schrieber) Mehle.

Mr. Mehle retired from the U.S. Postal Service as a Postal Clerk in October, 1975, with 27 years of service.

He was an Army and Merchant Marine Veteran of World War II.

Mr. Mehle was a member of the F.O.E. Aerie #245, Cumberland, and the American Legion, Fort Cumberland Post #13.

Survivors include two sons, David J. Mehle, Bedford, Pa., and Michael F. Mehle and wife Cherie, Chesapeake, Va.; two daughters, Nancy E. Mehle, Bedford, Pa., and Esther Kostelnik and husband, Michael, Cambridge Springs, Pa.; three brothers, William J. Mehle, Tucson, Ariz., James J. Mehle, Phoenix, Ariz., and Paul J. Mehle, Rocky Mount, N.C.; four sisters, Mary Fitzpatrick, Kitty (Mehle) Coons, and Anne Jones, all of Rocky Mount, and Rose Ricks, Portsmouth, Va.; and six grandchildren.

At Mr. Mehle's request, his body will be cremated. There will be no visitation.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Maryland State Veterans cemetery Chapel, Rocky Gap, on Wednesday, Nov. 26, 1997, at noon with the Chaplain of the local combined Veterans Honor Guard officiating. Interment will follow.

Military honors will be accorded at the graveside by the local combined Veterans Honor Guard.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 111 South George Street, Cumberland, MD 21502; or to a charity of one's choice.

The George-Upchurch Funeral Home, 202 Greene Street, Cumberland, is in charge of the arrangements.

CAROLYN S. METZNER
NEW PARIS, Pa. - Carolyn Sue (Flanagan) Metzner, 20, of New Paris, formerly of Hyndman, died Sunday, July 13, 1997, in Napier Township, Bedford County.
Born Feb. 26, 1977, in Cumberland, Md., she was the daughter of Russell M. Flanagan Sr. and Carol J. (Kennell) Flanagan, RD 1, Hyndman.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband Joseph L. "Joey" Metzner Jr.; her 8 month old daughter, Skye Jonelle Metzner; two sisters, Denise Franzak, Mechanicsville, Md., and Barbara Colvin, Culpepper, Va.; two brothers, Raymond Flanagan, Hyndman, and Russell Flanagan Jr., Baltimore; maternal grandmother, Geraldine Kennell, Hyndman; paternal grandmother, Adaline Booker, Cumberland, Md.; parents-in-law, Joseph L. and Barbara L. (Doyle) Metzner, Hyndman; three nephews; and three nieces.

Mrs. Metzner was employed by the Cannondale Corporation, Bedford. She had attended Frostburg University and was a 1995 graduate of Hyndman High School, where she was an honor roll student, senior class president and a member of the basketball, tennis and soccer teams. She also was a coordinator for the Hyndman Area Girl Scouts.

Friends will be received at the Harvey H. Zeigler Funeral Home, Hyndman, on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Wednesday at 11 a.m. with the Pastor David A. Klink officiating.

Interment will be in the Palo Alto Hilltop cemetery.
