REV. DR. HOWARD M. AMOSS
DOVER, Pa. - Rev. Dr. Howard M. Amoss, 93, formerly of Fort Myers, Fla., also formerly of Cumberland, died Thursday, Aug. 28, 1997, in York Hospital, York.
A native of Fallston, the Rev. Doctor Amoss was a graduate of Western Maryland College and Wesley Thological Seminary, Westminster. He also was a former pastor of the Centre Street United Methodist Church, Cumberland. He was a retired United Methodist minister from the Baltimore and Peninsula Conferences of Maryland, a former pastor in Fort Myers churches, and a former Bible study teacher and program coordinator at the Marriott Calusa Harbour Retirement Home, Fort Myers.

He was the widower of Ernestine O. Amoss.

Surviving are two daughters, June A. Karschner of Dillsburg, Pa., and Dorothy A. Boehm, of Huntsville, Ala.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at Fork United Methodist Church, Fork, in November.

The Cremation Society of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, Pa., has handled the arrangements.

HAROLD L. GRAY
GARRETT, Pa. - Harold L. Gray, 82, of Garrett, Pa., died Sunday, Nov. 2, 1997, at Lee Hospital, Johnstown.
Born Feb. 2, 1915, in Elk Lick Township, Somerset County, he was a son of the late John A. and Dorothea Mae (Rittenour) Gray. He also was preceded in death by three brothers, Carl, James, and John Jr.; and one sister, Ethel.

He is survived by his widow, Lily (Diehl) Gray; three sons, Dr. Jerry L. Gray and wife Margaret (Hrusha), Windber, James J. Gray and wife Jill (Rounyak), San Antonio, Texas, and Glenn A. Gray and wife Mary (Merkel), Garrett; grandchildren, Christian, James J. Jr. and wife Valerie, Gregory and wife Ellen, Stephen, Matthew and wife Ellen, Patrick, Nathan, Thomas Hughes, Sara Hallett, and Tina Hennssye; great-grandchildren, Whitney, Ethan, Josh, Elisha, Doug, and Nicole; and two brothers, Paul Gray and wife Eva, and Wayde and wife Betty, all of Ravenna, Ohio.

He was a life member of Mount Tabor Lutheran Church, Garrett, a member of the Meyersdale American Legion, the Disabled American Veterans, and the United Mine Workers. He was a past commander of the Garrett American Legion, a veteran of World War II serving as a corporal with Company C, 25th Armored Engineer Battalion, 6th Armor Division, Third Army. He received the Purple Heart with one oak leaf cluster, Silver Star, Good Conduct Medal, and European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with four bronze stars.

The family will receive friends at the Leckemby Funeral Home, Meyersdale, on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be held at the Mount Tabor Lutheran Church on Wednesday at 11 a.m. with Pastor Randall Marburger and Pastor Ken Davis officiating. The body will be taken to the church one hour prior to the services.

Interment will be in Highland cemetery, Garrett.

The family suggests that donations be made to the Mount Tabor Lutheran Church Building Fund in his memory.

ROBERT J. HOSSELRODE
HYNDMAN, Pa. - Robert John Hosselrode, 62, of RD 1, Hyndman, died Monday, Aug. 11, 1997, at his residence.
Born Nov. 10, 1934, in Londonderry Township, Bedford County, he was the son of the late Lester L. and Marian R. (Lowery) Hosselrode. He also was preceded in death by one brother, Curtis L. Hosselrode.

Mr. Hosselrode was a retired construction laborer and a member of the Laborers International Union of North America, Local 616 of Cumberland. He attended Palo Alto United Methodist Church and belonged to the Cumberland FOE, aerie 245, the Kennells Mills Sportmen's Club and the Barrelville Outdoor Club.

Surviving are his wife Doris J. (Prinkey) Hosselrode, Hyndman; two sons, Robert D. Hosselrode and wife Susan, Cumberland, Md., and Brian K. Hosselrode, at home; one daughter, Holly L. Hosselrode, Cumberland; one very special granddaughter, Ashley N. Hosselrode, Cumberland; and three brothers and three sisters, all of RD 1, Hyndman, Harry H. Hosselrode and wife Judy, Theodore H. "Buck" Hosselrode and wife Sugar, Russell E. Hosselrode and wife Cindy, Vivian L. Webber and husband Jim, Anna J. Webber and husband Barney, and Debra L. Piper and husband Johnny.

Friends will be received at the Harvey H. Zeigler Funeral Home, Hyndman, on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Wednesday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Roger A. Johnson officiating.

Interment will be in the Porter cemetery, near Ellerslie, Md.

Members of the Cumberland FOE, Aerie 245, will serve as pallbearers.

Memorials may be sent to the Dialysis Unit, Memorial Hospital, Cumberland, MD 21502.

EVA M. DUCKWORTH
VANDERGRIFT, Pa. - Eva M. Duckworth, 92, of 281 Orr Avenue, Washington Township, Vandergrift, died Monday, July 28, 1997, at Allegheny Valley Hospital, Natrona Heights.
Born December 28, 1904, in Short Gap, W.Va., she lived in the Vandergrift area most of her life. She was the daughter of the late Seth and Mary Ann (Senn) Aldridge. She also was preceded in death by her husband, John M. Duckworth, in 1982, two sons, Walden A. "Wally" and John Cameron Duckworth, a daughter, Mary Catherine Duckworth, and two brothers, Frank and Writer Aldridge, Ridgeley, W.Va.

Mrs. Duckworth was a graduate of Potomac State College, Keyser, W.Va., and Shepherd College, Shepherdstown, W.Va., and was a teacher before her marriage. She was a charter member of Faith Lutheran Church, Oklahoma Borough.

Surviving are a son, Marvin M. Duckworth, Allegheny Township; 10 grandchldren, including Jennie Moore, with whom she lived the past 15 years; 12 great- grandchildren; a brother, Marshall Aldridge of Springfield, W.Va.; and a sister, Claudine Manning Powell, Ridgeley, W.Va.

Services were held at the Faith Lutheran Church on Thursday, July 31, 1997, at 10 a.m. with her pastor, the Rev. Keith Deckinger officiating.

Interment was in Greenwood Memorial Park, Lower Burrell.

M. ALVERNA CARPENTER
HYNDMAN, Pa. - M. Alverna Carpenter, 89, of RD 1, Hyndman, died Saturday, Feb. 15, 1997, at her residence.
Born May 20, 1907, at Ellerslie, Md., she was a daughter of the late John R. and Nellie S. (Waltman) Porter. She also was preceded in death by a son, Harlan J. Carpenter; a brother, Richard Porter; and a sister, Elma Thompson.

Surviving are her husband of 63 years, Herbert M. Carpenter; a son, Delos M. Carpenter and wife Wanda, McHenry, Md.; a daughter, Sylva Ann Willison and husband Robert, RD 1, Hyndman; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a brother, E. Harlan Porter, RD 1, Buffalo Mills; a sister, M. Loie Holler, Hyndman; and a daughter-in-law, Sumi Carpenter, Azusa, Calif.

Mrs. Carpenter graduated from Hyndman High School and Shippensburg University. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Hyndman.

Friends will be received at the Harvey H. Zeigler Funeral Home, Hyndman, on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Julie L. Applegate officiating. Interment will be in the Hyndman cemetery.

The family requests that contributions be made to CARE or the Hyndman Area Rescue Squad.

WALTER P. GRAY
DANVILLE, Pa. - Walter P. Gray, 77, of 19 Heather Hills Drive, Danville, died at 8:55 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 7, 1997, at the Hospice of Central Pennsylvania Residence, Harrisburg, Pa., where he had been a guest for five days. He had been in failing health for 12 years.
He was born in Staten Island, N.Y., a son of the late Peter and Jennie E. (Bloome) Gray. He had resided in Danville since 1986 and previously in Cumberland from 1948 to 1986. He was a graduate of John Jay High School, Brooklyn, N.Y. He served with the New Jersey National Guard and later with the U.S. Army during World War II as a member of the 30th Field Artillery Battalian in Europe.

Following his military service, he was employed as a lineman by Western Union. Later he was a salesman for Wilson & Pugh Hardware Store in Cumberland. When this business closed, he spent his final years before retirement working in the maintenance department of the State of Maryland Mental Health/ Mental Retardation Center at Cumberland.

In Danville he volunteered to assist at Camp Breathe Easy, a camp for children with lung disease and asthma, which is supported by the American Lung Association of Central Pennsylvania. He was known by the many campers as "Uncle Walter."

He attended the Grove Presbyterian Church in Danville and had been a member of St. Luke Lutheran Church, Cumberland.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Jean Smith Gray on Aug. 12, 1986. He is survived by three children: Robert W. Smith, Berea, Ohio, Charles R. Smith, Fremont, Calif., and Donna Jackson, Hagerstown; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Charles W. (Dorothy) Schuller Sr., with whom he resided in Danville; a nephew, Charles W. Schuller Jr.; and a niece, Dr. Diane E. Schuller, both at home in Danville.

Friends may call at the Kight Funeral Home, 309-311 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Flowers will be accepted.

Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Kight Funeral Home with the Rev. Stephen F. Yelovich, pastor of St. Luke Lutheran Church, officiating. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park, Cumberland.

Military rites will be accorded at graveside by various veterans organization.

Memorials may be sent to the American Lung Association of Central Pennsylvania for Camp Breathe Easy, 264 Market St., Sunbury, PA 17801; the Grove Presbyterian Church, Bloom Street, Danville, PA 17821; or to St. Luke Lutheran Church, 1601 Frederick St., Cumberland, MD 21502.

MARGARET A. FISHER
SALISBURY, Pa. - Margaret A. Fisher, 93, of Salisbury, died Friday, March 14, 1997, at Goodwill Mennonite Home, Grantsville, Md.
Born Sept. 5, 1903, at Shaft, Md., she was a daughter of the late John and Catherine (Trapp) Chapman. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Bruce L. Fisher, on Sept. 6, 1989; a son, J. William "Bill" Fisher; three brothers, William, John and George Chapman; and four sisters, Florence Morrissey, Leola Miller, Josephine Yarnall, and Bernadette Chorpenning.

Mrs. Fisher was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, West Salisbury, and a charter member of Salisbury VFW Auxiliary.

Surviving are two sons, Eugene Fisher, Salisbury, and James "Chappie" Fisher, Westerly, R.I.; a daughter, Mary Catherine Seeker, Arcadia, Calif.; a brother, Francis Warren Chapman, and a sister, Elizabeth Miller, both of Cumberland, Md.; 14 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Michael's Catholic Church on Monday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Bernard White officiating.

Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Expressions of sympathy may be directed to St. Michael's Church.

ROY E. DIEHL
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. - Roy Edward Diehl, 73, of 1801 Atlantic Avenue, Atlantic City, died Friday, Sept. 19, 1997, at Memorial Hospital, Cumberland, Md.
Born Aug. 5, 1924, in West Salisbury, Pa., he was a son of the late Henry C. and Eva C. (Cochrane) Diehl.

Mr. Diehl was a graduate of Johns Hopkins Hospital, School of X-ray Technicians. He was an X-ray therapist and manager of the Emergency Room X-ray Department at Atlantic City Medical Center. A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, he was a member of the American Legion Post 1000, Trenton. He was a Methodist by faith.

Surviving are a brother, George E. Diehl, El Paso, Texas; two sisters, Ruth Ansel, Cumberland, and Jean Rembold, Springs, Pa.; a sister-in-law, Eris Diehl, Kampsville, Ill.; an uncle, George "Joe" Diehl, Salisbury, Pa.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received at the Newman Funeral Home, Salisbury, on Tuesday from 10 to 11 a.m.

Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Tuesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Steven Heatwole officiating.

Interment will be in Salisbury cemetery.

Expressions of sympathy may be directed to Memorial Hospital Hospice or to the charity of choice.
