THE REV. ALAN L. WHITACRE
LANCASTER, Pa. - The Rev. Alan L. Whitacre, 65, of 308 Post Oak Road, Lancaster, formerly of Cumberland, Md., died at home on Saturday following a lengthy illness.
Born in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Irvin and Mary Betson Whitacre.
Surviving are his wife of 41 years, Phyllis M. Whitacre; two daughters, Beth, wife of Christopher Knauer, Malvern, Pa., and Ellen Whitacre, Providence, R.I.; a son, Mark A., husband of Lisa M. Whitacre, Lancaster; and five grandchildren.
He retired in 1994 after 45 years in the pastoral ministry.
He was a graduate of Elizabethtown College, the Bethany Theological Seminary in Chicago, and the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Gettysburg, Pa.
He received his clinical pastoral education at Hershey Medical Center and was ordained in 1949 at the Old Furnace Church of the Brethren, Ridgeley, W.Va.
Friends will be received at the Kearney A. Snyder Funeral Home, 141 East Orange Street, Lancaster on Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and at the Swatara Hill Church of the Brethren on Wednesday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Church on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m.

THOMAS H. UPOLE JR.
KATHLEEN JOY YODER
SALISBURY, Pa. - Thomas Howard Upole Jr., 51, and his stepdaughter, Kathleen Joy Yoder, 15, both of 547 Fisher Road, Salisbury, died Thursday, June 4, 1998, at their residence as a result of accidental carbon monoxide poisoning.
Mr. Upole was born Aug. 9, 1946, in Oakland, Md., a son of Thomas Howard Upole Sr. and Vauda Marie (Bolyard) Upole, of Oakland.
He was a member of Maranatha Assembly of God, Grantsville, Md., and was a foreman for the Garrett County Roads Department.
He was a member of Grantsville Lions Club and was an AFSCME representative for his local union.
He also coached Grantsville Pony League teams.
Mr. Upole was an active member of the National Guard.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Joy Marie (Yoder) Upole, Grantsville; a son, Donn Steven Upole, Grantsville; three daughters, Marcie Lynn Beiler and Lori Ann Upole, both of Grantsville, and Rhonda Kay Oates, Buckhannon, W.Va.; a stepson, Michael Yoder, Salisbury, Pa.; a stepdaughter, Cynthia Klass, North Huntingdon, Pa.; three brothers, Harold and Charles Upole, both of Crellin, Md., Donald Upole, Oakland,; a half brother, Derek Gallagher, Frederick, Md.; two sisters, Margaret Landon, Alliance, Ohio, and Linda Dawson, Deer Park, Md.; five grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren.
Kathleen was born May 28, 1983, in Meyersdale, Pa., a daughter of Mark W. Yoder, Felton, Pa., and Joy Marie (Yoder) Upole, Salisbury.
She was a 9th grade student at Salisbury-Elk Lick High School where she played basketball, was a member of the chorus and was a staff member of the newspaper.
She also played AYSO Soccer.
She was preceded in death by her stepfather, Thomas H. Upole Jr.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by her stepmother, Debora D. Yoder, Felton, Pa.; a brother, Michael Yoder, Salisbury, Pa.; a sister, Cynthia Klass, North Huntingdon, Pa.; two stepbrothers, Donn S. Upole, Grantsville, Md., and Jeremy R. Staines, Felton, Pa.; four stepsisters, Marcie L. Beiler and Lori A. Upole, both of Grantsville, Md., Rhonda K. Oates, Buckhannon, W.Va., and Kimberly L. Staines, Felton, Pa.; her maternal grandparents, Creed and Miriam Yoder, Meyersdale, Pa., and her paternal grandparents, Crist and Rhoda Yoder, Grantsville.
Friends will be received for Mr. Upole and Miss Yoder at the Newman Funeral Home, Grantsville, Md., on Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Joint funeral services will be conducted on Monday at 10 a.m. in the funeral home with Pastors Dewayne and Sharon Johnson officiating.
Interment will be in Springs cemetery.
Expressions of sympathy for Mr. Upole may be directed to Northern Garrett County High School Scholarship Fund and those for Miss Yoder may be directed to the Salisbury-Elk Lick High School Scholarship Fund, in care of the funeral home.
HARVEY H. "BUCK" ZEIGLER JR.
HYNDMAN, Pa. - Harvey "Buck" Harmon Zeigler Jr., 52, of Clarence Street, Hyndman, died suddenly at his home on Wednesday, May 20, 1998.
Born April 5, 1946, at Memorial Hospital, Cumberland, Md., he was the son of Harvey H. Zeigler Sr., of Buffalo Mills, RD 1, and the late Rose D. Zeigler.
He was the brother of Dr. Zella Rose Zeigler Fraley and husband Dr. Donald Fraley II, both of Pittsburgh, and Susan Schwirian and husband David Schwirian of Springdale, Ark.
On Sept. 5, 1973, in Williamsburg, Va., he married
Joanne L. Farnsworth.
She survives along with three children, Brandon H. Zeigler and wife Anette C. Zeigler, Emily Z. Kendall and husband Bobby M. Kendall, and Matthew J. Zeigler and wife Christine G. Zeigler; and five grandchildren, Eliot E. Zeigler, Zachary T. Kendall, Dorrit R. Zeigler, Alexander M. Kendall, and the fifth expected in July.
He earned the rank of Eagle Scout as a member of Post 60 on Aug. 26, 1963.
He graduated from Hyndman-Londonderry High School in 1964 and attended the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, from which he received a Bachelor of Science and master's degrees in biology.
While at William and Mary, he enlisted in ROTC and then served as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army.
He was honorably discharged in 1973.
He worked for eight years as a quality control manager for Corning Glass Works in Corning, N.Y.
In 1980, he returned to Hyndman to join his father in business as a funeral director at the Harvey H. Zeigler Funeral Home.
He graduated summa cum laude from the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science where he received several awards including the Memorial Award for leadership and the John Rebol award for the highest scholastic average.
Being active in the community, he was CEO and Chairman of the Board of Hoblitzell National Bank, and a member of the Hy-Lo Lions Club.
He served on the Bedford County School Board form 1989 until 1993, and was president from 1991 through 1992.
Friends will be received at the Harvey H. Zeigler Funeral Home, Hyndman, on Friday and Saturday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the Harvey H. Zeigler Funeral Home, Hyndman, on Sunday at 2 p.m. with Pastor Steven L. Craft officiating.
Interment will be in the Schellsburg cemetery.
IVY M. ZELINSKY
MEYERSDALE, Pa. - Ivy M. Zelinsky, 72, of McKees Rocks, died Monday, Dec. 7, 1998, at Kittanning.
Born March 2, 1926, in Rockhampton, Queensland, Australia, she was a daughter of the late Henry and Jeanne (Bloomer) Haldane.
She also was preceded in death by a grandson, James Edward Zelinsky.
She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Victor A. Zelinsky; and five children, Mary J. Roush, Meyersdale, Vernon A., McKees Rocks, Victor A. Jr., Walter R., and Nathan J. all of Minnesota; 27 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday at the Price Funeral Home, Meyersdale, where the service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Friday, with Pastor Gary Morris officiating.
Interment will be in the Union cemetery, Meyersdale.
EVA M. ZIEGLER
MECHANICSBURG, Pa. - Eva Marie Ziegler, 90, of Mechanicsburg, formerly of Cresaptown, Md., died Wednesday, May 20, 1998, at the Clairmont Nursing Home, Carlisle.
She was the widow of the late George T. Ziegler.
Mrs. Ziegler was a house parent for the Methodist Home for Children. Formerly of Cresaptown, she had been a house parent for the Tressler Lutheran Home for Children and the Sykesville Home for Children.
She was a member of the Cresaptown United Methodist Church.
Surviving are one daughter, Sondra Z. Snyder, Mechanicsburg; three granddaughters, Cathay Snyder, and Cheryl Keeney, both of Mechanicsburg, and Rhonda Michaels, Enola, Pa.; and three great-grandchildren.
The Cremation Society of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, is in charge of arrangements.
Memorial services will be held at the Cresaptown United Methodist Church, Cresaptown, on Sunday, May 24, at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Harold R. McClay Jr. officiating.
