Frederick E. Hackbarth

Frederick E. Hackbarth died June 23, 2000, in Medford, Long Island, N.Y., after a long illness. Mr. Hackbarth was a 1965 graduate of North Allegheny High School. He was a Navy veteran of the Vietnam War who served as a signalman 2nd class on the USS Navy Destroyer Ramsey from 1969 to 1971. Before that, he served on the USS Brush and trained on the USS Koiner. Mr. Hackbarth was executive director of Seafield Services, an alcohol and substance abuse center in Riverhead, Long Island. He began his career with Seafield Services as an alcohol and substance abuse counselor and was promoted to senior counselor and then clinical supervisor. He became executive director in 1995. Survivors include his mother , Eleanor M. Hackbarth of Bellevue; and his sister, Linda Hackbarth Allerton of McCandless. He was preceded in death by his Father , Ernest W. Hackbarth. A memorial service was conducted in Port Jefferson Station, Long Island, N.Y. Burial was in Calverton National Cemetery on Long Island with military honors.
Florence Gilbert Hahn

Florence Gilbert Hahn, 88, of Knox, died at 7:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 31, 2000, in the Northwest Medical Center in Franklin. She was born May 16, 1912, in Wilkinsburg, the daughter of the late Rev. Joseph J. Gilbert and Florence Westwood Gilbert. Mrs. Hahn was a graduate of the Emlenton High School and Temple University School of Commerce. Over a period of 30 years, she held several secretarial positions, and retired in 1968. She was a member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Knox, where she had served as organist, financial secretary and on the church council for many years. She was a former member and secretary of the former Emlenton Chapter #426 Order of Eastern Star. Also she was a member of the Clarion County Garden Club. She succeeded her husband as secretary and treasurer of the Knox Union Cemetery Association. Her interests were crewel embroidery, reading and music. She married George B. Hahn on July 16, 1934 and he preceded her in death on Feb. 22, 1982. She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Slaughenhoupt and her husband, Elmer, of Greensburg; four grandchildren, Cynthia Page of Youngwood, Lee Napoli and her husband, Peter, of Marblehead, Mass., George Slaughenhoupt and his wife, Pamela, of Easton, Md., and John Slaughenhoupt and his wife, Monica, of Wilmington, N.C.; five great-grandchildren, Robert Page and his wife, Jennifer, of Gold Hill, Ore., Benjamin Page and Christina Page of Greensburg, Taylor and Anna Slaughenhoupt of Easton, Md.; and a great-great-granddaughter, McKenna Page of Gold Hill, Ore. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday in the WILLIAM N. RUPERT MORTUARY in Knox. Funeral services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in the Emmanuel Lutheran Church with her pastor, the Rev. Gary Hilfiger, officiating. Interment will be in the Knox Union Cemetery.

Viola Hart, 83, formerly of Etna, died Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2000, at the Highland Hall Care Center, New Castle. Born Sept. 29, 1916, in Sharpsburg, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Aniela Tobik Skrzypasek. Survivors include two sisters , Julia Plowey and Susan Plowey, both of Ross; and nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clem Hart. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in NEELY FUNERAL HOME, 2208 Mt. Royal Blvd., Shaler, where services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday with the Rev. Mark Thomas officiating. Burial will be in Allegheny County Memorial Park, McCandless.

Stanley B. Johns, 65, of Silver Creek, Ga., passed away Sunday afternoon, Aug. 27, 2000, at his residence following an illness of several months. Mr. Johns was born in Greensburg, Nov. 10, 1934, a son of the late Guy and Mable Seese Johns. Prior to his illness, he was employed as a service manager with Suhner Manufacturing in Rome, Ga., for 11 years. Mr. Johns was an adviser with the VICA Program at Coosa Valley Tech and was a "Kentucky Colonel." He was a member of the Church of the Brethren. Preceded in death, in addition to his parents, by a brother, Gary Johns. Survivors include his wife, Janice "Jan" Short Johns, to whom he was married on Sept. 5, 1987; two daughters , Mrs. Donna Lockington of Muncie, Ind., and Mrs. Stacey Deal of Lake Wylie, S.C.; two stepdaughters, Ms. Julie Faith of Rome, Ga., and Mrs. Jill Bennett of Honolulu, Hawaii; a stepson, Jon Faith of New Albany, Ind.; an "adopted" son, Allen B. Gifford of Rome, Ga.; two sisters , Mrs. Marion Moyer and her husband, Donald, of Greensburg, and Mrs. Elizabeth "Betsy" Brecht and her husband, Joseph, of New Alexandria; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. A private graveside service will be held Saturday at the Berkey Cemetery, Windber, Pa., with the Rev. Earl Crissman officiating. Steven J. Kohut

Steven J. Kohut, 88, of Munhall, died Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2000, in his daughter's home in West Chester. He was the beloved husband of the late Margaret Martin Kohut, with whom he shared 57 years of marriage. Born in Homestead, he was the son of the late Julia and Nicholas Kohut. He is survived by his daughter, Rita Stone of West Chester; a brother, Edward Kohut of Seminole, Fla.; a sister, Margaret Filiatrault Granger of New Port Richey, Fla.; four stepgrandchildren and seven stepgreat-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Nicholas Kohut, and four sisters , Julia Matlock, Mary Nahay, Ann Urban and Helen Selai. He owned and operated S.J. Kohut Aircraft, Marine and Automotive Service in Homestead for more than 35 years. He was a master mechanic and a pioneer of early aviation in the Pittsburgh area. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, country living, family and his caring neighbors. (Shelly) Latherow; Father of Scott (wife, Barbara) Latherow of Export, Allen (wife, Diane) Latherow of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Amy (husband, Dan) Kolodgey of Tarentum; brother of Bonell Latherow Long. Ted retired from WABCO in 1985, was a member of Valley Lodge 613 F&AM, Trafford American Legion Post 331 and a veteran of World War II. Mildred Babich Mamula, 83, of White Oak, formerly of Yukon, died Thursday, Aug. 31, 2000, at the Frick Hospital, Mt. Pleasant. Born June 10, 1917, in Donora, she was a daughter of the late Mile and Stana Basara Bojadzija (Babich). Prior to her retirement, she was the former owner and operator of the Central Hotel in Yukon. She was a member of the Holy Ascension Serbian Orthodox Church, Youngwood. She was also a member of the SNF Lodge #64 of Irwin. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers , Theodore and Michael Babich. Surviving are her husband, George Mamula; a brother, Nick Babich and his wife, Angie, of Yukon; two sisters , Mrs. Kathryn Semenko and her husband, Jack, of Bradford, Pa., and Mrs. Martha Skaljac and her husband, Miran, of Windsor, Ontario, Canada; and numerous nieces and nephews. Friends will be received at the BEATTY-RICH FUNERAL HOME INC., Route 136, Madison, Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A prayer service will be held in the funeral home Saturday at 12:30 p.m., to be followed by a funeral service at 1:30 p.m. in the Holy Ascension Serbian Orthodox Church, Youngwood, with the Very Rev. James Haines Marks, 87, of Cranberry, formerly of Sewickley and Vero Beach, Fla., died Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2000, in Sherwood Oaks, Cranberry. Born Aug. 24, 1913 in Edgeworth, he was the son of the late Herbert Earl and Mary Haines Marks. He was preceded in death by two spouses, Elizabeth Dunsford Marks and MaryAnn Prentice Mitchell Marks. He was the beloved Father of James H. (Barbara) Marks Jr., Janet (Scott) Marks Baton and William (Isobel) Marks; grandfather of Robert B. (Sherry) Marks, Sandra (David) Marks Stubechaer, Christopher W. Marks, Debra J. Marks, James C. Marks, Kristine (Ed) Marks Natterstad, Scott E. Marks, Elizabeth (Sean) Baton Lydon and the late Charles Scott Baton; great-grandfather of Avery, Jonathan, Andrew, Tomas, Anna, Nicolas, Emily, Charlotte and John; brother of Lewis Henry (Betty) Marks, Elizabeth (Albert) Marks Clarke and the late Herbert Earl Marks. He was executive vice-president of Equitable Gas Company in Pittsburgh and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He retired from the Army as a full colonel. He was a member of the Rotary Club and Engineer's Society, both in Pittsburgh, Duquesne Club, Edgeworth Club, Allegheny Country Club and Vero Beach Country Club. He was a volunteer for the Vero Beach Community Hospital and he was an avid golfer. Visitation at 4 p.m. Friday in COPELAND'S SEWICKLEY-IRVINE CHAPEL, 702 Beaver Street, where a memorial service will be at 4:30 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. Jean Henderson officiating. Joseph M. Messner, 81 , died Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2000. Born Sept. 14, 1918, in Pittsburgh, he was the son of the late John and Mary Messner. Mr. Messner was a World War II veteran. He was a retired draftsman. Survivors include his wife, Mildred Messner; a daughter, Virginia Perlik; and a son, Thomas J. Messner. Elizabeth R. "Betty" Miller, 63, of North Huntingdon, died Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2000, in the UPMC Presbyterian, Pittsburgh. She was born Oct. 12, 1936, in Export, a daughter of the late David J. Jones Jr. and Marie Nebel Jones. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Virginia Beighley; and two brothers , Harry Jones and Richard Nebel. She is survived by her husband, Donald L. Miller; a daughter, Sharon Maher of Delmont; a son, Roy Miller of North Irwin; four grandchildren, Carl Webb, Trish Barrowcliff, Manda Kleugal and Patrick Maher; three great-grandchildren; two sisters , Alice Jones and her husband, Jim, of Irwin and Donna Beech and John Gates of North Huntingdon; three brothers , David Jones and his wife, Jackie, of North Huntingdon, Thomas Jones and his wife, Ronda, of Manor and Gary Jones of Export; a sister-in-law, Shirley Nebel of Murrysville; and a number of nieces and nephews, including Sandy Weaver.
