CLARENCE W. HENGST SR
HYNDMAN, Pa. - Clarence William Hengst Sr., 78, of Clarence Street, Hyndman, died Sunday, July 11, 1999, at Memorial Hospital, Cumberland, Md.

Born May 23, 1921, in Claysburg, Pa., he was a son of the late John W. and Rella (Divley) Hengst. His wife, Hilda Belva (Burkett) Hengst, also preceded Mr. Hengst in death.

Mr. Hengst is survived by two sons, Clarence W. Hengst Jr., and John D. Hengst, both of Hyndman; a brother J. Russell Hengst, Florida; four grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and two step-great-grandchildren.

Mr. Hengst, a Korean War veteran, worked as a chemist for the Celanese Corporation for 27 years before becoming the manager for 20 years at Garland Petroleum. Mr. Hengst was a member of the Hyndman VFW, and for 50 years was a member of the Cumberland Bowling Association. A member of First United Church of Christ, Hyndman, since 1957, Mr. Hengst served as financial secretary for the Hyndman Charge from 1964 to 1997. He also taught the Adult Bible Sunday School class from 1960 to the present, was a member of the Adult Choir, and was an elder for the church. In his free time Mr. Hengst enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening.

Friends will be received at the Harvey H. Zeigler Funeral Home, Hyndman, on Tuesday, July 13, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted at the First United Church of Christ-Hyndman, Market Street, Hyndman, on Wednesday, July 14, at 11 a.m. with Pastor Steven L. Craft and the Rev. Ruth Kershner officiating.

Interment will be in Hyndman cemetery.

The Fort Bedford Honor Guard will accord Mr. Hengst full military honors.

ANN E. KERNEN
HORSHAM, Pa. - Ann E. (Rehbeck) Kernen died peacefully at home on Thursday, Feb. 11, 1999, after a long battle with cancer. She was the beloved wife of George F. Kernen for 42 years.

She was a daughter of the late Gilbert A. and Helen Love Rehbeck.

Although she was born in Morgantown, W.Va., she spent her formulative years in Cumberland, Md., moving to Philadelphia with her family after her junior year in high school. Ann graduated from Little Flower High School in 1951 and Fitzgerald-Merch School of Nursing in 1955. While raising a family she did private duty nursing, having also worked at Holy Redeemer Hospital and The Horsham Clinic.

Surviving besides her husband are three loving children, David J. Kernen, Philadelphia, Teri McMenamin, North Wales, and Eileen Kernen, Horsham. She is also survived by three grandchildren; two sisters, Mary "Skip" Kelly, Cincinnati, Ohio, and Margaret "Peggy" Kraus, State College, and their husbands and children.

Relatives and friends are invited to her Funeral Mass on Monday, Feb. 15, 11 a.m., at St. Catherine of Siena Church, 321 Witmer Road, Horsham, Pa.

Interment will be at George Washington Memorial Park.

Viewing will be Sunday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at John J. Bryers Funeral Home Inc., 406 N. Easton Road, Willow Grove, Pa.

Donations may be made in her memory to Rosenfeld Cancer Center, c/o Abington Memorial Hospital Fund Development, 1200 Old York Road, Abington, PA 19001.

G. FRANKLIN KIMMELL
KENNETT SQUARE, Pa. - G. Franklin Kimmell, of Kennett Square, a retired architect, died of complications following surgery Jan. 27, 1999, at Jefferson Hospital, Philadelphia, Pa.

Starting with Vincent Kling Architects, Mr. Kimmell worked with several of Philadelphia's leading architectural firms in the 1950s and 1960s and was involved with many of the building projects that shaped center city during that time. In the late 1960s and early 1970s he ran his own architectural business in Cheyney, Pa., then worked for the City of Philadelphia as a senior architect until his retirement in 1988.

He was born in Petersburg, W.Va., in 1922, then moved with his family to Birmingham, England, returning to West Virginia at the age of 12. He graduated from Keyser High School in Keyser, W.Va., in 1941, and recently returned for his 50th and 55th year reunions. He attended Potomac State College and, after the war, graduated from Cornell University School of Architecture Class of 1950.

Mr. Kimmell served with the Signal Corps in World War II and saw action throughout the European Theater of war. In recent years he has been active with the Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge Organization (VBOB).

Mr. Kimmell was an Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts of America. This strong foundation led to a lifelong interest in the out of doors. An avid naturist, he was involved in a number of alternative approaches to health and philosophy.

He was preceded in death by his eldest son, Scott, in 1973.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Jeanne Chamoulaud Kimmell; children, Pamela J., Northampton, Mass., Wendy Daly, San Diego, Calif., Todd B., Philadelphia, Christopher C., Annville, Pa., Katherine Kimmell-Dolchan, Cumberland, Md.; six grandchildren; and a sister, Joan Furtaw, Alexandria, Va.

BARBARA H. JACKSON
BEANS COVE, Pa. - Barbara H. Jackson, 90, resided at Nicholas County Health Center, Richwood, W.Va., from July 7, 1989, until her death June 29, 1999.

Born in Beans Cove, she was the daughter of the late Francis Hillary Donahoe and Mary Donahoe. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Fred Jackson.

Mrs. Jackson was a housewife and a member of the Holy Family Church in Richwood. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Survivors include a number of nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received at the Simon Coleman Funeral Home, Richwood, on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. The rosary will be said at 7 p.m. on Thursday.

Services will be conducted Friday at 10 a.m. in the funeral home. Interment will be at Mount Olive cemetery, Tioga, W.Va.

LENORE C. KEATING
BEDFORD, Pa. - Lenore Catherine Keating, 79, of Bedford, formerly of Beans Cove, died Wednesday, Nov. 3, 1999, at Pennknoll Village.

Born March 17, 1920, in Eckhart, she was the daughter of the late John W. and Eleanor (Niner) Pape. She was also preceded in death by her husband, James Joseph Keating; two sons, James Joseph Keating, Jr., and a stillborn baby boy; three brothers, John Pape, William Pape, and Clement "Buddy" Pape and wife, Betty; and one sister, Anita Winner and husband, James.

Mrs. Keating was a seamstress and homemaker who worked in several local garment factories. She was a member of Seven Dolars Catholic Church, Beans Cove, and the Church Ladies Guild.

Surviving are one son, John W. Keating and wife, Linda, Beans Cove; four daughters, Mary Cecilia McKenzie and husband, James, Hancock, Eleanor V. Leasure and husband, Richard, Beans Cove, Dorothy L. Kinser and husband, Larry, Chaneysville, Pa., and Kathy Peck and husband, Richard, Cumberland; four brothers, Ralph Pape and wife Phyllis, Eckhart, Roy Pape and wife, Patricia, Rising Sun, Thomas Pape and wife, LaVonne, Baltimore, and Patrick Pape and wife, DeAnna, Charlottesville, Va.; two sisters, Hulda Lambert and husband, Philip, Baltimore, Edith Copenhaffer and husband, Cope, Baltimore; two sisters-in-law, Phyllis Pape, Topping, Va., and Valerie Pape, Flint, Mich.; 20 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Christian Wake service will be conducted Friday at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Seven Dolars Catholic Church, Saturday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. William F. Moody as celebrant.

Interment will be in Seven Dolars Church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Thomas P. Keating, J. Michael Wolford, James E. McKenzie, Joseph W. McKenzie, William P. McKenzie, and Andrew D. McKenzie.

ELLA E. IMES
MOUNT DORA, Fla. - Ella E. Imes, age 90, of Fairview Avenue, Mount Dora, formerly of Pendleton County, W.Va., and Chaneysville, Pa., died Sunday, April 25, 1999.

She was born in Pendleton County and moved to Central Florida in 1998 from Chaneysville.

Mrs. Imes was a homemaker. She attended the Christian Church, Flintstone, Md.

She is survived by a son, Lewis F. Imes, Warren, Ohio; a daughter, Mabel L. Borell, Mount Dora; a sister, Russie Perrin, Chaneysville; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held at Chaneysville cemetery, Chaneysville, Pa., Friday, April 30, 1999, at 1 p.m. with Donald Harr, Minister, officiating.

ANNA H. KEISTER
BEDFORD, Pa. -Anna Hisel Keister, 93, formerly of R.D. #6, (Centerville), Bedford, died Friday, March 25, 1999, at Cumberland Crossing Retirement Community, Carlisle.

Born July 17, 1905, in Lanesville, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Zell Teter and the late Margaret (Kimble) Teter. She was also preceded in death by her husband, the late Monroe Keister, in 1960; two sisters; and a brother. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Mrs. Keister was a former school teacher in Washington and Allegany counties. She was a graduate of Allegany High School, class of 1924. She attended the University of Maryland. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Bedford, the Bedford Springs Eastern Star #41, Rebecca Lodge in Centerville, and was active in Grange at Centerville.

Surviving are four sons, Charles "Pete" Keister and wife, Theresa, Bartlett, Tenn., Fred Keister and wife, Patricia, Fort Loudon, Pa., Ronald Keister and wife, Barbara, Smithsburg, Md., and Sam Keister, Bedford; two daughters, Anna (Hickey) Smith and husband, Paul, Boiling Springs, Pa., with whom she resided for 10 years, and Glenna Ruth Kimble and husband, David, Shaker Heights, Ohio; 17 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted on Monday at 1 p.m. at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., with the Rev. Richard A. Ruff officiating.

Interment will be in Frostburg Memorial Park.

The family requests memorials be made to the Cumberland Crossing Retirement Community Auxiliary, 1 Longsdorf Way, Carlisle, PA 17013.
