AMBROSE N. APPLE SR.
WARFORDSBURG, Pa. - Ambrose Norris Apple Sr., age 87, of Route 1, Warfordsburg, and formerly of Cumberland, Md., died Wednesday, March 24, 1999, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland.

Born Feb. 5, 1912, in Romney, W.Va., he was the son of the late Walter and Eunice (Norris) Apple.

He was a 1932 graduate of Hancock High School. He retired in 1989 from the Maryland State Highway Administration as an Inspector after 33« years of service. He was formerly employed with the Celanese in Cumberland for 18 years. He had been a meat cutter for Harry Souders and had worked for Andy Cohill Orchards, formerly Hancock, Md., and Baker Waverly Survey Company.

He was of the Protestant faith, was a member of The American Humane Society, a member of the National Federation of Wildlife, a member of the National Audubon Society, and was a member of the MCEA.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret E. (Powell) Apple, Warfordsburg, whom he married Feb. 25, 1935, in Berkeley Springs, W.Va.; two daughters, Eudora Cowan, Cumberland, Norma DeWitt, Lake, Mich.; and one son, Ambrose Norris Apple Jr., Metamora, Mich; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Lillian Marvin and Eudora Brown; three brothers, Dwars Apple, Jessie Apple and George Apple.

Services will be held Sunday, March 28, 1999, at 1 p.m. at the Grove Funeral Home, 141 W. Main St., Hancock, with the Rev. Marion Nesselrodt and the Rev. Ray Mallow officiating.

Burial will be in the Cedar Grove Christian cemetery, Dott, Pa.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home, Saturday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. For the convenience of friends, the funeral home will be open from 2 to 9 p.m. on Saturday.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Washington County SPCA,

LOIS GROVE BAER
CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Lois Grove Baer, 86, of Menno Haven Nursing Home, Chambersburg, formerly of Frostburg, Md., died Saturday, May 8, 1999, at the nursing home where she had resided for several years.

She was born Dec. 20, 1912, in Greencastle, a daughter of the late Rev. John F. and Almeda Landis Grove. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Adam Baer; and a sister, Naomi Shohat.

Mrs. Baer was an office assistant who worked in her husband's medical office. She was the Charter President of the Soroptomist Club, president of the Homemakers Club, was active in P.T.A., Chiropractic Auxiliary, and in Frostburg Methodist Church. She and her late husband were both prominent in local and state civic organizations in the Frostburg area. Mrs. Baer was a member of the Cedar Grove Mennonite Church, Greencastle.

She is survived by her daughter, Anna Grace Holloway, Rye, N.H.; two sons, Adam D. Baer Jr., Titusville, N.J., John W. Baer, New Castle, N.H.; two sisters, Mrs. John (Ruth) West, Edgewater, Md., Mrs. Stanley (Esther) Johnson, Chambersburg; three brothers, Dwight Grove and John L. Grove, both of Greencastle, Ethan Grove, Clinton, Md.; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Kelso-Cornelius Funeral Home Ltd., 725 Norland Ave., Chambersburg, on Wednesday, May 12, 1999, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Nelson Martin officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral at the funeral home on Wednesday morning.

Interment will be in the Stouffer cemetery, Chambersburg.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Grove Scholars Program, John L. Grove School of Business, Shippensburg University Foundation, Shippensburg, PA 17257.

JOHN P. CASSEN
WELLERSBURG, Pa. - John P. Cassen, 82, of 164 W. Mineral St., Ext., Wellersburg, died Saturday, Dec. 18, 1999, at his residence.

Born March 27, 1917, in Wellersburg, he was the son of the late Harry L. and Eleanor (Shaffer) Cassen.

Mr. Cassen was formerly employed in the housekeeping department at Memorial Hospital, Cumberland, Md. He also was a former owner of the Mount Savage Bus Line in Mount Savage, Md., and for many years was the secretary/treasurer for the Borough of Wellersburg. He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Reformed Church, Wellersburg.

Surviving are his wife, Betty (Kennell) Cassen; a daughter, Linda C. Winebrenner and husband, Robert R.; a son, John Ward Cassen and wife, Peggy; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and a sister, Mary Jane Baker.

There will be no visitation.

Services will be private for immediate family members only with the Rev. Ray Perkins officiating. Interment will be in the Restlawn Memorial Gardens, LaVale, Md.

The Durst Funeral Home, Frostburg, is in charge of arrangements.

RAYMOND E."PETE" CROSS
BEDFORD, Pa. - Raymond E."Pete" Cross, 59, of 832 Pine Ridge Road, Bedford, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, June 9, 1999, at Memorial Hospital.

Born Jan. 26, 1940, in Cumberland, Md., he was the son of the late Rutherford Benjamin Cross and the late Bernice Arella (Blubaugh) Cross.

Mr. Cross was the owner/operator of Pete's Concessions. He was a member of the International Independent Showmen's Association. He was a past president and holder of several offices in the Warrior Run Lions Club. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Reserves.

PeteÕs quick wit and gentle demeanor allowed him to make a stranger feel like an old friend. He will be missed by the many friends he made at the fairs and festivals he attended with his concession trailers. An avid hunter, he was a charter member of the Sandy Crossing Hunting Club. His many hunting stories will be his legacy for many years.

Surviving are his wife, Norma M. (Brown) Cross, Bedford; two daughters, Constance M. Cross, Bedford, and Carmen S. Cross, Columbus, Ohio; three brothers, R. Leroy Cross and wife, Leslie, Lake Gordon, D. Thomas Cross and wife, Marilyn, Cumberland, Md., William W. Cross, Bedford; and a sister, Judy R. Tittle and husband, Joseph, Centerville.

Friends will be recived at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Bernard A. Yost officiating.

Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Kevin Kammauf, Randy Simpson, Roy Stewart, Sheldon Price, Kevin Price and Dennis Hickey.

HARRY L. GREER JR.
SALISBURY, Pa. - Harry Lawrence ``Bud" Greer Jr., 74, of 9244 Mason-Dixon Highway, Salisbury, died Saturday, April 24, 1999, at Conemaugh Memorial Hospital, Johnstown.

Born Feb. 28, 1925, in Pittsburgh, he was a son of the late Harry L. Greer Sr. and Myrtle L. (Moore) Greer.

Mr. Greer was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ, Salisbury. He was retired from the accounting department of Kelly-Springfield Tire Co., Cumberland, Md. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and was a member of Meyersdale Lodge 554, Free and Accepted Masons.

Survivors include his wife, Nedra NaDeen (Schaat) Greer; a son, Harry L. ``JR" Greer III, Orlando, Fla.; two daughters, Debra Lee Durben, Oakland, Md., and Cheryl Lynn Shughart, Shippensburg; a sister, Lois Latshaw, Deltona, Fla.; and six grandchildren.

Friends will be received at the Newman Funeral Homes, P.A., Grantsville, Md., on Monday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted at St. John's United Church of Christ on Tuesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Raymond Brown officiating.

Friends may call at the church one hour prior to the services.

Interment will be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Allegheny County Memorial Park, Pittsburgh.

Expressions of sympathy may be directed to St. John's United Church of Christ, P.O. Box 33, Salisburg, PA 15558.

Meyersdale Lodge 554 F & AM will conduct a memorial service Monday at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
