Edward Thomas "Red" Lowstetter

Edward Thomas "Red" Lowstetter, of Rock Ridge Road, Connellsville, retired U.S. Navy Senior Chief, died Thursday evening, Aug. 10, 2000, in Frick Hospital, Mt. Pleasant, at the age of 56. He was born in Mt. Pleasant, Oct. 25, 1943, a son of the late Howard "Hub" and Irene Thomas Lowstetter. Tom was Methodist by faith and a retired career service man serving with the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam conflict with 26 years of service. He retired from his last assignment, Camp H.M. Smith, in Hawaii, where he was a resident for 11 years, as C.T.A.C.S. Senior Chief. Red was the recipient of numerous awards and decorations from his country, including six Good Conduct awards, National Defense Service Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation and the Defense Meritorious Service Medal. He was stationed throughout his career in many foreign countries and on numerous Fleet Carriers. He was a graduate of Southmoreland High School, Class of 1961. Red was a member of Scottdale American Legion Post 240, the Connellsville Moose and Fairview Club. He was also a current member of the Fleet Reserve Association (F.R.A.) in Hawaii. His loving wife of 38 years, Anita C. Stuart, whom he married March 17, 1962, survives Tom. He is also survived by his devoted daughters , Rachel L. Stratton and her husband, Joseph, of Marietta, Ga., and Tristine L. Lowstetter Ford of Hunker and her fiance, Michael Detone; seven grandchildren, Athena, Micah, Darian Ford, Tilar Detone, Andrew, Jennifer and Kimberley Stratton; and his brother and sisters , Kenneth Lowstetter and his wife, Barbara, of Florida, Phyllis Rathbun of Illinois, Jennie Jaram and her husband, Robert, of Ohio, and Norma Tebbs and her husband, Al, of Florida. Tom's family will receive friends in the FRANK KAPR FUNERAL HOME INC., 417 W. Pittsburgh St., Scottdale, Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. Tom's funeral service will be held Sunday at 7 p.m. in the funeral home with the Rev. David Lee officiating. Full military honors will be accorded at the funeral home Sunday evening following the funeral service. Burial will follow at sea by the U.S. Navy with full military honors. Tom's family suggests, in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the donor's favorite charity in memory of Edward Thomas Lowstetter.

Henrietta C. Mansfield, age 86, of Penn Hills, born in Pittsburgh on August 23, 1913, died on Wednesday, August 9, 2000. Wife of the late William W. Mansfield; beloved mother of Harriet Conrad (William), and William Mansfield (Margaret); sister of Harry Schrott of Florida and the late Robert, Lawrence, and William Schrott, and Betty Foster. Also survived by eight grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. Member of Epiphany Lutheran Church of East Liberty. Angela A. Marak, 87, died Thursday, Aug. 10, 2000, in UPMC Passavant, McCandless. Born Nov. 14, 1912 in Pittsburgh, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Theresa Retzbach Wiedor. Mrs. Marak was a homemaker. Survivors include three sons , John V. Marak of Harmony, Ronald J. Marak of West Sunbury and Roy A. Marak Sr. of Wexford; two daughters , Carol Ann Zaborowski of Avonmore and Mary Grace Chandler of Harmony; a sister, Rita Krenn of Troy Hill; 21 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. Brother of Dorothy Weitzel of West Mifflin and the former State Representative Richard D. Olasz of West Mifflin, the late Clara Pokrywka and Leona Olasz. Also 11 grandchildren and a great-grandchild. Nicholas "Nick" Rubis, 85, of Davis Road, Dawson, died peacefully Friday, Aug. 11, 2000, at his residence, with his loving family at his side. He was born Dec. 14, 1914, in Van Meter, a son of the late Charles and Anna Benyak Rubis. He was a life member of St. Nicholas Orthodox Church, Jacobs Creek. Nick was a retired coal miner, having worked in the Banning Coal Mines with more than 30 years of service. He was also a dairy farmer for many years at his farm in Lower Tyrone Township. Nick was a life member of the United Mine Workers of America District 5. Nick leaves to cherish his memories his loving and devoted wife, Susan Kralik Rubis, with whom he celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary on Feb. 12, 2000; the following children: Gail Klejka and her husband, Stanley, of Mt. Pleasant, David Rubis and his wife, Nancy, of Venita, Gregory Rubis of Norvelt, and Kathy Kreinbrook and her husband, Doug, of Dawson; eight grandchildren, Lisa Myers and her husband, Charles, of Tarrs, Carol Zemba and her husband, Brian, of Latrobe, Amy Klejka and her fiance, Mike Noel, of Mt. Pleasant, Amanda Rubis of Norvelt, Ashley and Chelsey Kreinbrook of Dawson, and Nick and Sarah Rubis of Venita; two great-grandsons, Eric and Evan Myers of Tarrs; and a sister, Anne Jabour of Pleasant Hills. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Huber; and a brother, Charles Rubis. Nick's family will receive friends in the FRANK KAPR FUNERAL HOME INC., 417 W. Michael E. Sajna Jr., 49, of North Huntingdon Township, died Thursday, Aug. 10, 2000, at home, after a two-year battle with leukemia. He was born Nov. 25, 1950, during the "Blizzard of 1950" in Mt. Pleasant, a son of Mike and Leona Rusenko Sajna of Standard Shaft. Sajna was the outdoors writer for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, a lecturer and a contributor to numerous national magazines. In addition to his newspaper work, Sajna authored five books: "The Pennsylvania Trout and Salmon Fishing Guide"; "Buck Fever: The Deer Hunting Tradition in Pennsylvania "; "The Allegheny River: Watershed of a Nation" (with photographer Jim Schafer); "Days on the Water: The Angling Tradition in Pennsylvania "; and this spring, "Crazy Horse: The Life Behind the Legend." He had previously been employed by the Standard Observer of Irwin, the McKeesport Daily News, and the University of Pittsburgh Times. At one time, he was a frequent contributor to the Tribune-Review's Focus magazine. He graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1969 and California University of Pennsylvania in 1973. He was a member of the Newspaper Guild/Communications Workers of America, Trout Unlimited, Forbes Trail Chapter, The FlyFishers Club of Pittsburgh, Outdoor Writers of America, Standard Shaft Citizens Club and the Hecla Sportsmen's Club. In addition to his parents, Sajna is survived by his wife, Lisa Baxter Sajna, whom he married Sept. 17, 1999, the 50th anniversary of his parents' wedding; two stepdaughters, Lacy Thomas and Lindsay Thomas; and a goddaughter, Rebecca Cook of Irwin. He was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Sajna, on Aug. 6, 1976. When diagnosed with leukemia in October 1998, Sajna decided on an aggressive course of treatment with Dr. DeLynne Myers and Dr. Elizabeth McGuire of the Pittsburgh Cancer Institute. Sajna's family will never forget the dedication, professionalism and compassion shown by these two physicians and the nurses and staff of the UPMC Shadyside seventh floor. Sajna said his three proudest accomplishments were helping to raise Becky Cook for 10 years; his five books: and his deep and longstanding friendships. Friends will be received at GALONE-CARUSO'S, 204 Eagle St., Mt. Pleasant, from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday at 10 a.m. at Visitation Roman Catholic Church, Mt Pleasant, with the Rev. Anthony W. Ditto as celebrant. Interment will follow in Visitation Parish Cemetery. The family suggests memorial contributions may be made to the conservation organization of your choice.

Amelia Schramm, 97, died Thursday, Aug. 10, 2000, in Valencia Woods Nursing Home, Valencia. Born Nov. 8, 1902, in Germany, she was the daughter of the late William and Doreathea Wieland Klenk. Mrs. Schramm was a homemaker Survivors include a son, Charles Schramm of the North Hills; a daughter, Betty Schattauer of the North Hills; a stepson, James J. McKenzie of the North Hills; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-granchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Schramm; two sons , Jack A. Schramm and Edward J. Michael G. Simodejka, 52, of Toms River, N.J., died Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2000, at Memorial Hospital in Burlington County, N.J. He was born in Pittsburgh, a son of George and Anna Simodejka of Aberdeen, N.C., and lived in Germany and Georgia before moving to Toms River, 24 years ago. He was a retired U.S. Army captain and had worked for the past 25 years as deputy director of logistics at Lakehurst Naval Air Base, Lakehurst, N.J. He was a member of the 1st and 75th Ranger Battalion and was a U.S. Vietnam veteran. He was the recipient of the National Defense Service Metal, the Ranger Tab, the Expert Infantryman's Badge, the Parachute Badge and the Bronze Star. Over the course of his civilian career, he received numerous commendations and awards for superior service and performance. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Patricia Beleski Simodejka; a son, Jason M. of Seattle, Wash.; a daughter, Dawn M. of Lavallette, N.J.; and a sister, Andi Chaney of Aberdeen, N.C.
