John I. Canfield Jr.
John I. Canfield Jr., 77, 1518 Center St., Ashland, died Friday morning at his home.
From 1946 to 1989, he was the co-owner of Ashland Motors.
Born in Ashland, May 7, 1925, he was the son of the late John I. and Dorothy M. (Flanagan) Canfield Sr.
A naval veteran of World War II, he served in the Pacific Theatre of Operations, was the recipient of the Pacific Campaign Ribbon with four Battle Stars, and was a member of the L.S.T. Association.
He was a member of St. Joseph’s Church, Ashland; the Ashland Elks, the Ashland Legion, the Washington Fire Co., where he was a member of the ambulance board; a former member of the Ashland Rotary Club, former vice president of the board of directors of Citizens Bank, and a former treasurer for the Hillside Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents, was his wife, the former Irene A. Cooper, who died Nov. 24, 1995.
Surviving are his companion, Wanda Edelman, Ashland; daughters, Barbara Umlauf, Ashland; and Nadine Avenoso and Paula Murphy, both of Catawissa; brothers, Richard and Edward Canfield, and a sister, Dorothy Gough, all of Ashland; and five grandchildren. Nieces and nephews also survive.
The Rev. John Frink will celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial Monday at 11 a.m. in St. Joseph’s Church, Walnut Street, Ashland.
Interment will take place in St. Joseph’s cemetery, Ashland.

Catherine Bartone
Catherine (Hagelgans) Bartone, Hazleton, died Thursday evening at her home.
Born in Hazleton, she was the daughter of the late Leroy and Bridget (McDermott) Hagelgans, resided in this area all of her life, and was a member of Our Lady of Grace Roman Catholic Church, Hazleton.
Prior to retiring, she was employed as a quality control inspector for Wagner Electric, Weatherly.
Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents, were her husband, Joseph A. Bartone; a brother, Leroy; and a sister, Mary Sanzi.
Surviving are her son, Joseph A. Bartone Jr., Bethlehem; brothers, Joseph, Moosic; and Arthur and Ronald, both of Hazleton; and sisters, Anna Deisenroth, Weatherly; Patricia Hagelgans, Hazleton; and Joan Kelly, Moosic. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Services will be held Monday at 9 a.m. from Fierro Funeral Home Inc., 26 W. Second St., Hazleton, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial, to be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. in Our Lady of Grace R.C. Church.
Interment will take place in the parish cemetery.

Lydia M. Heiser
Lydia M. Heiser, 72, Main Street, Locust Dale, died Thursday at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center.
Born in Mount Carmel, May 7, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Paul and Margaret (Camp) Sabo, attended Ashland High School and was a member of Grace Evangelical Congregational Church, Locust Dale.
Prior to retiring, she was last employed by Weis Markets, Frackville, and North Schuylkill schools.
Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents, was her husband, Lewis E. Heiser, 1990.
Surviving are daughters, Cindy Lou, at home; Beverly Neas, Schwenksville; and Nanette Zampier, Ulster; a son, Lewis E. Heiser III, Shenandoah; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Nieces and nephews also survive.
Services will be held Tuesday at 8 p.m. from the Kull-Heizenroth Funeral Home, 901 Center St., Ashland.
Interment services will take place Thursday at 11 a.m. in Christ Church cemetery, Fountain Springs.

Donald Rusesky
Donald Rusesky, 39, formerly of Shenandoah, died Sept. 4 at his home in Anthony, N.M. after battling a long illness.
A graveside service was held in Our Lady of Fatima cemetery, Shenandoah.
The Robert M. McDonald Funeral Home, Girardville, has been in charge of the arrangements.

Sarah M. O’Brien
Sarah M. O’Brien, 96, 106 N. White St., Shenandoah, died Friday at Shenandoah Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Born in Mahanoy City, Oct. 9, 1906, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Sarah (Conrad) Waak, a member of Annunciation Blessed Virgin Mary Roman Catholic Church, Shenandoah, and was educated in Mahanoy City parochial schools.
A retired garment worker, prior to retiring, she was last employed at (former) P&M dress factory, Turkey Run, Shenandoah, and was a member of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union.
The last surviving member of her immediate family, preceding her in death, in addition to her parents, were her husband, James A. O’Brien, 1952; brothers, Louis and Anthony Waak; and sisters, Mary Nolan and Catherine Tracy.
Surviving are her son, James J. O’Brien, Stanley, N.Y.; a daughter, Mrs. Frank P. (Marilyn) Nork, with whom she resided; seven grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Services will be held Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. from the Walukiewicz-Oravitz Fell Funeral Home, 132 S. Jardin St., Shenandoah.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. in Annunciation B.V.M. R.C. Church, with the Rev. William N. Seifert, pastor, as the celebrant.
Interment will follow in Annunciation B.V.M. cemetery, Shenandoah Heights.

Charles D. Reinmiller
Charles D. Reinmiller, 65, 408 W. 10th St., Hazleton, died Friday morning at the Greater Hazleton Health Alliance, Broad Street Campus.
Before relocating to Hazleton, he was a resident of New Jersey, of the Catholic faith and was an active member of the Republican Party.
Born in Hazleton, he was the son of the late David L. and Anna (Voloshin) Reinmiller, and served in the Army during the Korean War.
Prior to retiring, he was purchasing manager for Austin Co., Cleveland, Ohio, and traveled extensively on company business.
Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents, were his wife, the former Mary Lynn Lamberson, Nov. 4, 2000; and an infant sister, June Ann.
Surviving are his son, David L. Reinmiller, Hazleton; a brother, David Reinmiller, Hazleton; and sisters, Mrs. John (Barbara) Potucek, Harleysville; and Mrs. Joseph (Janet) Planutis, Hazleton. Nieces and nephews also survive.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Mass, to be celebrated Thursday at 9:30 a.m. in St. Gabriel’s Roman Catholic Church, Hazleton.
Interment will take place at the convenience of the family.
The family will receive relatives and friends Thursday from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the John J. Pusti Funeral Home, 480 W. Broad St., Hazleton.

Elizabeth ‘Betty’ Stefanisko
Elizabeth “Betty” Stefanisko, 76, 14 Third St. (rear), Kelayres, died Friday morning at Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township.
Born in Kelayres, she was the daughter of the late George and Mary (Mnyahunchak) Stefanisko, and of the Byzantine faith.
Prior to retiring, she was employed at Publix shirt factory, Hazleton, and was a member of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union.
Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents, were sisters, Anna Zavalick, Helen Krisnitski, Mary Reshetar, Julia Boyer and Susan Billet; and brothers, John, Michael and George Stefanisko.
Surviving are sisters, Agnes Smar, Winter Park, Fla.; and Margaret Litwak, Pottstown; nieces and nephews.
Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by the Damiano Funeral Home, Blaine and Cleveland streets, McAdoo.

Margaret M. Masternack
Margaret M. Masternack, 91, 639 W. Penn St., Shenandoah, died Nov. 1 at Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center, Pottsville.
Born in Edison, N.J., she was the daughter of the late Michael and Mary (Czeh) Simon. She lived in Edison and New Brunswick, N.J., prior to moving to Shenandoah a year ago, and was a member of St. Ladislaus Roman Catholic Church, the ladies auxiliary Knights of Columbus 6678, and St. Mary’s Society, all in New Brunswick.
Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents, was her husband, Bruno J. Masternack, 1994.
Surviving are her son, Richard B. Masternack, Shenandoah; a daughter, Mrs. Louis (Arlene) Bodnar, Idaho Falls, Idaho; a brother, Eugene Simon, Columbus, N.J.; sisters, Grace Dobrowski, Somerset, N.J.; and Helen Vargo, Fountain Springs, Ariz.; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Nieces and nephews also survive.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated in St. Ladislaus R.C. Church, New Brunswick, N.J., with burial in St. Peter’s cemetery, also in New Brunswick.
Donations to the memorial fund of Our Lady of Mount Carmel R.C. Church, 129 S. Jardin St., Shenandoah, Pa. 17976, would be appreciated by the family.

Emma B. Jones
Emma B. Jones, 86, Dorrance Township, died Thursday night at Davis Manor, Wright Township. She resided in Dorrance Township since 1970.
Born in New York City, Aug. 21, 1916, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Emma (Thornton) Greene.
She was a former resident of Guttenburg, N.J., where she was a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars ladies auxiliaries. While residing in New Jersey, she had been employed by Kaiser Corp., a wristwatch component manufacturer in North Bergen, N.J., and by the United States Postal Service.
In addition, she assisted her husband, the late Thomas B. Jones, in the operation of the family meat market business, in Cliffside Park, N.J.
She was a member of Christ United Methodist Church, Mountaintop, and the Sunshine Circle of the parish; T.O.P.S., Mountaintop Senior Citizens, and the Nuangola Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.
Surviving are her daughters, Norma M. Whiteside, East Brunswick, N.J.; and Eileen E. Rooney, Wanaque, N.J.; a son, David J., Dorrance Township; nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; brothers, Earl Greene, Beverly Hills, Fla.; and Eric Greene, Tucson, Ariz.
Services will be held Monday at noon from McCune Funeral Home Inc., 80 S. Mountain Blvd., Mountaintop, followed by continued services at 12:30 p.m. in Christ United Methodist Church. The Rev. Bruce J. Gallup, pastor, will officiate.
Interment will take place in Slocum cemetery, Slocum Township.
Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m.
