Margaret E. Hartz
Margaret E. Hartz, 94, East Main Street, Weatherly, a guest at Weatherwood, the Carbon County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Weatherly, died Wednesday evening at the Greater Hazleton Health Alliance’s Church Street Campus.
Born in Weatherly, she was the daughter of the late George and Gertrude (Hunter) Eby, and a member of Centenary United Methodist Church, Weatherly.
She was a 1925 graduate of (former) Weatherly High School and a member of the Weatherly Area High School Alumni Association. In addition, she was a former member of the Hazleton (Mayflower) Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star.
A registered nurse, she had been employed at Frankford Hospital, Philadelphia.
Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents, were her husband, Calvin G. Hartz, 1981; a brother, Graham Eby; and a sister, Miriam Bretsky.
Surviving are her son, John C. Hartz, Germany; a daughter, Mrs. Tom (Miriam) Cullom, Des Peres, Mo.; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. from the Philip J. Jeffries Funeral Home, 211 First St., Weatherly. The Rev. Amy Boock, pastor, Centenary United Methodist Church, will officiate.
Burial will follow in Union cemetery, Weatherly.
Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of the services.

Frank P. McDonald
Frank P. McDonald, 84, formerly of Shenandoah, died Friday at Oakwood Court at Dock Woods Community, Lansdale, Montgomery County, where he resided.
Born in Shenandoah, he was the son of the late Harry and Anna (McCarthy) McDonald, and attended Shenandoah parochial schools.
An Army veteran of World War II, he received the Good Conduct Medal.
Prior to retiring, he was employed as a diesel machinist, last employed by Asplundh Manufacturing Co., Philadelphia.
He was a member of St. Casimir’s Roman Catholic Church, Shenandoah; a life-member of Phoenix Fire Co., Shenandoah; and a life-member of Mahanoy City Elks Lodge.
Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents, were his first wife, the former Irene Kostes, 1994; brothers, Bernard and James McDonald; and sisters, Margaret McDonald and Catherine Miller.
Surviving are his second wife, the former Mary Killien; and a sister, Mary Tim, Shenandoah. Nieces and nephews also survive.
Combined religious and military services will be held Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. from the Walukiewicz-Oravitz Fell Funeral Home, 132 S. Jardin St., Shenandoah.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. in St. Casimir’s R.C. Church.
Interment will follow in Indiantown Gap National cemetery, Annville.
Friends may call at the funeral home Wednesday from 8 a.m. until the time of the services. There will be no calling hours Tuesday evening.

George A. Perhonitch Jr.
George A. Perhonitch Jr., 53, 435 E. Chestnut St., Hazleton, formerly of Quakake, died suddenly Thursday at the Greater Hazleton Health Alliance’s Broad Street Campus.
Born in Hazleton, he was the son of George A. Perhonitch Sr. and Verna (Sube) Perhonitch, Quakake, and a former member of St. Michael’s Byzantine Catholic Church, McAdoo.
He had been employed at Hershey Chocolate USA for 20 years.
An avid hunter, fisherman and outdoorsman, he was a member of the National Rifle Association and held a lifetime membership in the Bass Anglers’ Sportsmens Society.
Surviving, in addition to his parents, are his wife of 13 years, the former Barbara Gueiss; stepsons, Brian Sipler, Mountaintop, and Barry Sipler, Lansford; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Warren (Brenda) Hunsicker, Hazleton; two grandchildren; a brother, Charles Perhonitch; and a sister, Mrs. Albie (Sarah) Kamisky, both of Quakake. Nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins also survive.
His funeral will be held Sunday evening at 7:30 p.m. at the Damiano Funeral Home, Blaine and Cleveland streets, McAdoo. The Rev. Mark Whitmer will officiate.
Burial will take place at the convenience of the family.
Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday evening from 6 p.m. until the time of the service.

Joseph J. Shane
Joseph J. Shane, 639 E. Centre St., Mahanoy City, died July 30 at Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center, Pottsville.
Born in Shenandoah, he was the son of the late Anthony and Anna Sucavage. He graduated from J.W. Cooper High School, Class of 1927.
He was a member of St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, Mahanoy City.
Mr. Shane last worked as manager of an office supply store in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents, were his wife, Anna, in 1983; and a sister, Isabelle Leon in 1997.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial, to be celebrated in St. Joseph R.C. Church at 10 a.m. on Monday.
Interment will be in the family plot in Our Lady of Dawn cemetery, Shenandoah.

Margaret Simasek
Margaret Simasek, 93, 310 E. Grant St., McAdoo, died Thursday afternoon at Hometown Nursing Home, where she had been a guest.
Born in Yorktown, Luzerne County, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Jennie (Thomas) Ford, and a member of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, McAdoo, and the Altar and Rosary Society of the parish.
She was a housewife and mother.
Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents, were brothers, Neal, Anthony, Michael, Angelo, Frank and John Ford; and sisters, Lena Wersinger, Anna Kish, Jean Ryba, Stella Waldron and Louise Ford. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Surviving are her husband of 73 years, Anthony “Tony, the Barber” Simasek; children, Mrs. Patrick (Margaret) Fudge, Sayreville, N.J., and Dorothy Rubasky, Jean Kohler and Ronald Simasek, all of McAdoo; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Many nieces and nephews also survive.
Her funeral will be held Tuesday at 9 a.m. from the Damiano Funeral Home, Blaine and Cleveland streets, McAdoo; followed by a Mass of Christian Burial, to be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. in St. Mary’s R.C. Church. The Rev. Joseph Martinkovic will be the celebrant. Concelebrating will be the Rev. James Bechtel.
Burial will follow in the parish cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home Monday evening from 6 to 9 p.m. A rosary service will be held.

Joseph C. Smith
Joseph C. Smith, 69, 2 Mystic Lane, Clifton Park, N.Y., formerly of Hazleton, died July 31 at St. Peter’s Hospital, Albany, N.Y.
A native of Shenandoah, he was a 1949 graduate of Hazleton High School and a graduate of Penn State, having studied at Highacres and graduated in 1954 from University Park. He held a bachelor’s degree in commerce.
Prior to retiring, in 1995, he was last employed by the Department of Transportation for the State of New York as assistant deputy commissioner of finance.
A certified financial planner and a certified public accountant, he was the former director of highway finance for the state of Tennessee.
In addition, he was a privately licensed pilot and an avid aviator.
Surviving are his sisters, Marie Angerame, Hampton Bay, N.Y.; and Elizabeth McVeigh, Hollywood, Fla.; four nieces and nephews, twin grandnieces and a grandnephew.
Arrangements have been handled by the New Comer-Cannon Family Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Road, Colonie, N.Y.
Memorial donations to Community Hospice of Albany, 445 New Karner Road, Albany, N.Y. 12205 would be appreciated.

Edward Stashinsky
Edward Stashinsky, 68, Harleigh, died Thursday evening at Hershey Medical Center.
Born in Stockton, he was the son of the late Nicholas and Anna (Hrino) Stashinsky, and a member of St. John’s Byzantine Catholic Church, Hazleton.
He retired in 1993 in the rank of 1st Sergeant, having served as a military technician with the National Guard.
Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents, was a sister, Dorothy Zavitsky.
Surviving are his wife, the former Marion Lynn; daughters, Mrs. Christopher (Donna M.) Ehrenberg, Newton, N.J.; and Mrs. Edward L. (Miriam) Stone, Hazleton; sisters, Olga Solanick, Detroit, Mich.; and Anna Metz, Lecanto, Fla.; and one granddaughter. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
His funeral will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. from the Frank J. Bonin Funeral Home, Inc., 542 N. Wyoming St., Hazleton.
Divine Liturgy with Office of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. in St. John’s B.C. Church.
Interment will take place in Calvary cemetery, Drums.
Friends and relatives may call at the funeral home Monday evening from 6 to 9 p.m. A Parastas service will be conducted at 7 p.m.

Rita Zehner
Rita Zehner, 87, R.R. 3 Bloomsburg, formerly of the Greater Hazleton area, died Friday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Paul (Stacey) Kluck, with whom she resided the past seven years.
A retired waitress, Mrs. Zehner was employed at Genetti’s Best Western, Hazleton, for 25 years.
Born in Waverly, N.Y., March 6, 1915, she was the daughter of the late Edward J. and Mary (Lewis) Devine, and a member of Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, Weston.
Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents, were her husband, Charles “Chick” Zehner, 1995; a son, Charles “Chuck” Zehner, 1988; brothers, Edward and Albert Devine; and sisters, Pauline Devine, Viola Keene and Loretta Kole.
Surviving, in addition to her daughter, Stacey, are daughters, Mrs. Lon (Nanci) Arledge, Basking Ridge, N.J.; and Mrs. Robert (Marqueen) Fahey, Sun City Center, Fla.; a son, James, Ormund Beach, Fla.; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Services will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. from the Mark S. Harman Funeral Home (West), Conyngham-Rock Glen Road.
The Rev. Patrick McDowell will celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. in Sacred Heart R.C. Church, Weston.
Burial will take place in Mountain Grove cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. A wake service will be held at 8 p.m.
