HOWARD W. "BUZZY" DUERR
Age 80, of Stowe Twp. on Thursday, December 21, 2006. Beloved husband of the late Eleanor (SERKOCH); loving father of Mariann, Howard Jr. (Sharyn) and Barry (Lisa); dear grandfather of Victoria, Christopher, Brandon, Emily and Nicholas; brother of the late Robert Duerr. Buzzy was a lifelong resident of Stowe Twp. where he was Commissioner for 20 years, a lifetime member of the West Park Volunteer Fire Co., the American Legion and VFW Post 418. He received a Purple Heart with the US Army in Germany during WWII. NORA COYNE DURKIN
207 S Irving Ave, died last night in St Mary's Hospital. Born in Scranton, daughter of Mrs Mary Hopkins COYNE, with whom she lived, and the late John R Coyne. Her husband, John Durkin, died 4 years ago in McKees Rocks. Mrs Durkin lived in McKees Rocks for 38 years. Church of the Nativity. Also survived by 2 sisters, Miss Catherine Coyne at home & Mrs Harold FINNERTY of Scranton; 5 brothers, Joseph Coyne at home, John J, Edward J & Thomas F of Scranton, James R of Clifton Heights. MARY DYMORA
Age 89, of Stowe Twp., on Thursday, December 14, 2006. Beloved sister of Walter and the late Agnes LEONE, Ann KAGLIK, Michael, Frank, Ted, Cecelia and Joe; also survived by nieces and nephews. Friends received Saturday and Sunday 2-4 and 6-8pm at the VALERIAN F. SZAL FUNERAL HOME, INC., 238 Helen Street, McKees Rocks. Funeral Monday 11am followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. John of God Parish, The Church at St. Mary's 11:30am.

JOSEPH SHIMKO, 90 of Mentor passed away April 5, 2008. Born July 27, 1917, in Mckees Rock, PA. A U.S. Army veteran, he earned a BA in Business from Western Reserve University, and worked for Carborundum Abrasive Manufacturing until his retirement. He was a charter Member of Faith Lutheran Church. Survived by his wife, Betty, of 61 years. Children: Gregory of Detroit, MI; Susan SAARI of Mentor, Joseph Timothy (Christee) of Forth Worth, TX; Stephan (Jenne) of Hawaii; Grandchildren, Brant (Julie); Stephanie (John); Elizabeth (Kevin), Josh, and Amanda. Great-grandchildren Meghan, Leia and Elijah Joseph. Sisters Mary WOHLGEMUTH of Castle Rock, CO and Mary RADOS of Naples, FL. Preceded in death by mother Elizabeth MIZISIN. Funeral Service 11 a.m. Thursday, at Faith Lutheran Church 8125 Mentor Ave Mentor.

FRANK "CHICHY" SICILIA
On Thursday, January 3, 2008, Frank, age 85, of Stowe Twp. Husband of Adeline MAIETTA; father of Lorraine GREGA, Janet (Sam) ABATTA, Frank (Janet) Sicilia and Diane (Marc) BENADINELLI; brother of Catherine REGINA and Jenny ROMANUCCI and the late Joseph Sicilia; grandfather of Leigh Ann, Shannon, Nicole, Sonni, Frank Jr., Nicolas, Dominick and Julian; great grandfather of Brittany, Ben, Cole, Maura, BraeLynn, Sophia, Mia and Nicholas. He was a decorated Special Ranger in the Army during WWII and active in the Lions Club. Friends received at the ANTHONY M. MUSMANNO FUNERAL HOME, 700 7th Street, McKees Rocks. Funeral Mass in St. Malachy Church, Forest Grove Road, Coraopolis, PA on Monday at 10am. Visitation on Saturday and Sunday from 1-4 and 6-8pm.

ROSE MARIE SIKORA
Rose Marie Sikora, 81, of Nazareth, died March 4, 2008 in Easton Hospital. She was the wife of John J. Sikora, who died Nov. 5, 2000. She was born Aug. 29, 1926 in McKees Rocks, Pa., she was the daughter of the late John and Franceska (Horvath) KOGER. She was a homemaker. Rose Marie was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, Nazareth. She was a former member of Nazareth Vigilance Hose Company. She was a graduate of Stowe High School. She is survived by a daughter, Joanne, wife of Edward ROSSNER, of Forks Township; two grandchildren, John Rossner and Debra BORGO; two great-grandchildren, Ashley Borgo and Virginia LENDER. Services: 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Reichel Funeral Homes Inc., 220 Washington Park, Nazareth. Mass of Christian Burial, 10 a.m. in Holy Family Catholic Church, Nazareth. Burial in Holy Family cemetery.

JERRY T. SILVERMAN
Jerry T. Silverman, retired president of Retail Ventures Inc., died of a stroke Saturday in West Palm Beach, Fla.Mr. Silverman, 63, formerly of Squirrel Hill, began his business at the first Silverman's store in McKees Rocks and went on with his brother, Mark of Mt. Lebanon, to build a nationwide chain of 285 stores known as Silverman's and American Eagle Outfitter which they operated until they sold the business recently. He also was an amateur jazz trumpet player. He received bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Pittsburgh. Besides his brother, he is survived by his wife, Marjorie Katz Silverman; a son, Stephen M. of Shadyside; and a daughter, Jane Ellen of New York City. Friends may call from 12:30 to 2 p.m. tomorrow at Rodef Shalom Temple, 4905 Fifth Ave., Oakland. Services will be there at 2 p.m. Burial will be in West View cemetery, Ross

HERBERT SILVETTE
Dr. Herbert Silvette, 94, of "Low Gear," Stanardsville, Virginia, died February 14, 2002, in a local nursing home. He was born in McKee's Rock, Pa., on December 23, 1907, the son of the late Ellis M. and Ella COHAN Silvette. Dr. Silvette attended New York University, the University of Richmond and the University of Virginia and received the degrees of BS and MS in 1932, as well as a Ph.D. in Physiology in 1934. In 1931, he was a Porter Fellow of APS, and he held an E.R. Squibb & Sons Fellowship in Physiology in 1936; he was an AMA Fellow in 1945 and in 1946 was a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellow. Throughout his long career, he was associated with the University of Virginia Medical College, Meharry Medical College, the University of Washington and the Medical College of Virginia, teaching both physiology and pharmacology. He resigned in January 1947 due to poor health. Dr. Silvette published over 120 papers and books on subjects in the medical field as well as novels and volumes of lyric poetry including Great Man's Ape, The Doctor on the Stage, The Goose's Tale, Eve's Second Apple, Maiden Voyage, Grave Example, The Medlars, My Orange Has Bitter Rind, Never Say Die, Come Unto Me, Tobacco (with P.S. Larson and H.B. Haag: supplemented with P.S. Larson in 1968, 1971 and 1975), Cultural Pharmacology (1974). He catalogued the works of Philemon Holland in 1940 and continued his work on Holland through 1946. Services will be private. Friends and colleagues who wish to honor Dr. Silvette are asked to donate to the charity of their choice.

CATHERINE I. "KATIE" SIMONETTE
Catherine I. "Katie" Simonette, 86, a life long resident of Coraopolis, died on Wednesday, Sept. 20, at Ohio Valley General Hospital in Kennedy Township. She was born in McKees Rocks on June 17, 1920, a daughter of the late John and Eva (Stodnic) Lesovitch. Mrs. Simonette worked for 13 years for the housekeeping department at the downtown Pittsburgh Hilton Hotel. Surviving are her children, William, Robert and Janet Simonette; siblings, Stella Stewart and Howard and William Lesovitch, all of Coraopolis; grandchildren, Lisa Wodarek of Moon Township and Jason Simonette of Coraopolis; and great-grandchildren, Kelly Kruzelyak and Richard Wodarek. Friends were received in Copeland's Coraopolis Funeral Home where a blessing service was held with the Rev. Michael Caridi officiating. Interment followed in Coraopolis cemetery.

FRANK SINKWICH
Frank Sinkwich, who died Monday at 70 after a lengthy illness. The quiet and painfully shy Sinkwich became the first SEC player to win the Heisman Trophy in 1942. Born in McKees Rock, Pa., Sinkwich was the son of Croatian parents who came to the United States from Soviet Georgia. Sinkwich had a successful pro career with the Detroit Lions until a knee injury in 1945 forced him out of pro football. After two knee operations, Sinkwich tried a comeback with the New York Yankees in 1946 and 1947, after which he retired. He returned to Athens and began a beer and wine distributorship. He was lured away for several years as the head football coach at Tampa University before returning to Athens, where he lived until his death. Funeral services for Sinkwich will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church at 355 Pulaski St. in Athens. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Athens Regional Development Council, c/o Athens Regional Medical Center, Fund Development, Athens, Ga., 30613. Sinkwich is survived by a son, Frank Sinkwich of Athens; a daughter, Francine Sinkwich-Minshew of Sandy Springs, and two sisters, Violet FLASK of Youngstown, Ohio, and Eleanor SHUFFLEBAGER of Lehigh, Fla. BETTY C. SKILLING
Betty C. Skilling, 83, of Sugar Grove, IL passed away Wednesday, January 16, 2008 at the Michealsen Healthcare Center in Batavia. Betty was born June 27, 1924 in McKees Rocks, PA, the daughter of John and Marie (nee McNicholas) CLARKE. Betty was united in marriage to Thomas E. Skilling on January 27, 1951 in Pittsburgh, PA. She is survived by her three sons, Tom, Jeff (Rebecca) and Mark (Sukran); a daughter, Sue (Jeff) ERICKSON; four grandchildren, Kristen, Jeffrey, John Taylor, and Aysesu. In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Thomas. All funeral services were held privately.

SKORUPSKI
Walter B. Skorupski, 90, of Smiths Creek, died Friday, August 1, 2008 at home surrounded by his family. He was born April 14, 1918 in McKees Rocks, Pennsylvania to the late Walter and Viola Skorupski. He married Doris E. STAHL on October 6, 1952 in St. Clair. Mr. Skorupski retired from Laborer's Local #463. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII and was a member of Smiths Creek American Legion Post #525. He enjoyed gardening, farming, riding his tractor, tinkering and caring for his beloved fish in his pond. He is survived by his wife, Doris; two daughters, Tammy (John) NAVARRO and Patricia GLUCKSTAD, all of Smiths Creek; a son, Rex RAWLINGS of Indiana; four grandchildren, Ed RESPONDEK, David PORTIS, Shawn FURNESS and Joshua KANE; many great-grandchildren; a sister, Irene (Dan) JANKOWSKI of Warren; many nieces and nephews; and family friends, Don and Kathy Loxton and Thomas Portis, his closest and dearest friend. He was preceded in death by a son, Donn Gary Rawlings. Visitation will be 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. on Monday, August 4, 2008 in the Marysville Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday in the Marysville Funeral Home. The Reverend Brian Cokonougher will officiate. Burial will be in Caswell cemetery, Kimball Township. Graveside military honors will be conducted under the auspices of the St. Clair County Allied Veterans Council. Pallbearers will be John Navarro, Don Loxton, Shawn Furness, Dean Morris, Andrew Eves and Andrew Bishop. Honorary pallbearer will be Josh Kane.

JOHN J. SNYDER, JR.
On Sunday, December 1, 2002, John J. Snyder, Jr., age 82, of McKees Rocks; beloved husband of Dorothy (EDWARDS) Snyder; father of Jeffrey Snyder and Jerrilyn (Snyder) VAN COURT; stepfather of Joseph GALIS, Sharon MANCINI, Terry and Robert EDWARDS; grandfather of Lilianne, Emma and Molly Snyder, Adam and Ashley Van Court, Robert, Daniel, Joseph and Stephen Edwards and the late Yvette Edwards; great-grandfather of Jesse, Alyssa, Ryan, Kerri, Abby and Natasha Edwards; brother of Lillian LEMAY and Marie MCNABB; former husband of Smiley HUGHEY. Friends welcome at MCDERMOTT FUNERAL HOME, INC., 1225 Chartiers Ave., McKees Rocks (Family owned & operated since 1886). Monday and Tuesday 2-4 & 7-9 pm. Funeral Wednesday. STEVE SOLOMON
Steve Solomon, 95, of Salem, Ohio, died at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2005, at his home after congestive heart failure. Born July 23, 1909, in McKees Rocks, he was the son of Stephan and Florence FEREZAN Solomon. He retired in 1974 as a foreman at Halstead & Mitchell in Zelienople after 25 years. He previously worked at Ford Motor Co. in Detroit, Mich., for three years and then worked at the Eljer Co. in Salem as a welder for five years. He lived in Zelienople for 42 years before moving to Salem 20 years ago. Mr. Solomon was a member of St. Elias Romanian Orthodox Church in Ellwood City, the Salem Senior Citizens and the Salem Area Retired Workers. He was an avid walker and bicyclist. Survivors include his wife, Mary ROHAN Solomon, whom he married Sept. 3, 1938; two daughters, Joan JANSHEGO of Washington, D.C., and Stephanie SKURCENSKI of Bartlesville, Okla.; two grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters and three brothers. Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at STARK MEMORIAL funeral home, 1014 E. State St., Salem, Ohio. The funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home with the Rev. Panteleimon Stanciu, his church pastor, officiating. Entombment will be at Zelienople Community Mausoleum. Saracusta services will be at 7:15 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
