Richard H. (Dick) Miller

Richard H. "Dick" Miller, 72, of Denver, PA, entered into rest on Sunday, Dec. 12, 2010 at the Lebanon VA Medical Center after a lengthy illness. He was the husband of Fonda R. (Weidman) Miller.

Born in Rexmont, PA, Dick was the son of the late Harry D. and Mary C. (Kayser) Miller. He worshipped in the Lutheran faith and was a U.S. Army Veteran. For 23 years he was a salesman for MGS Trailers of Denver.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Tyrone R. Miller of Stevens, PA; a daughter, Moneith Y., wife of Thomas D. Gable of Denver, PA; three grandchildren, Chase, Woody and Tashina; and two sisters, Barbara Ann, wife of Sam Blatt of Robesonia, PA and Carolyn, wife of Karl Hausman of Reading, PA.

Friends will be received at Paul L. Gravenor Home For Funerals, 100 W. Main St., Ephrata, from 9:30-10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 15. Funeral services will follow at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Dennis L. Trout officiating. Interment with Military Honors accorded by the Red Rose Veterans Honor Guard will be in Mellinger's cemetery, Schoeneck-Stevens, PA.

Donations in Dick's memory may be made to the Lebanon VA Medical Center, 1700 South Lincoln Ave., Lebanon, PA 17042.

Grace M. Hackman

Grace M. Hackman, 79, of Stevens, PA and a lifelong resident of the Ephrata, PA area, went to be with the Lord on Friday, Dec. 10, 2010 at home after a short illness. She was the wife of Jay C. Hackman.

Born in Ephrata, Grace was the daughter of the late Earl W. and Katie L. (McElhenney) Sweigart. She was a housewife and in the 1950's was employed as a Sewing Machine Operator. She also was an Avon and Stanley Products Sales Representative.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Sandra M., wife of Rick L. Gerhard of Stevens, PA; two granddaughters: Ellen R., wife of Ryan Garber of Mt. Joy, PA and Maureen R., wife of Dustin Horning of Denver, PA; six great-grandchildren; two sisters: Edna Grube and Mabel Russell; and two brothers: Clarence and Calvin Sweigart.

Grace was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, Norman Weller, and a brother, Earl Sweigart.

Friends will be received at Paul L. Gravenor Home For Funerals, 100 W. Main St., Ephrata, PA from 6-8 p.m. on Mon., Dec. 13 and from 9-10 a.m. on Tues., Dec. 14. Funeral services will begin at 10 a.m. at Gravenor's, following Tuesday's visitation. The Rev. Ken Mingledorff will be officiating and interment will be in Center Union cemetery, East Earl, PA.

Donations in Grace's memory may be made to Hospice of Lancaster County, P.O. Box 4125, Lancaster, PA 17604-4125.

Jean M. Landis

Jean Marie (Bowman) Landis, 92, left this life on July 29, 2017 at Landis Homes, Lititz, PA. Jean was born in Manheim Township, and was the daughter of the late Lorenze and C. Belle (Fisher) Bowman. She was the wife of the late James E. Landis, who died in 1985.

Surviving Jean are three children, Jean Landis Naumann, wife of Arthur Naumann of Kingston, MA, James Landis, husband of Dorothy Shinn of Edmond, OK, and Jenny Landis, wife of Donald Faix of Parkesburg, PA. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Bernadette and Colleen Landis, CO, Derick Naumann, husband of Charlene, MA, and Katherine Shinn-Landis, OK, and two great-grandchildren, Cameron and Kayleigh Naumann.

Jean was preceded in death by a son, Joel Landis, and by her siblings, Elva Eyster, Elizabeth Grube, Virginia Witwer and Arthur Bowman. Jean enjoyed crossword puzzles, word searches and jigsaw puzzles. She was a housewife for much of her life, and was always baking, canning and cooking for her family. She loved cardinals and any shade of the color blue, and enjoyed beautiful flowers, especially roses. She was a volunteer with the Office of Aging for 11 years.

Services will be private at the convenience of the family. Anyone wishing to remember Jean with a gift may make a contribution in her name to Hospice and Community Care of Lancaster or to the Landis Homes Caring Fund. The family wishes to thank the staff of Oregon House at Landis Homes for their compassionate care and Hospice for their support during Jean's final days.

Rita Carlene (Higgins) Cunningham

Rita Carlene (Higgins) Cunningham, 72, of Lancaster, was taken by the angels up to meet her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ Thursday, Oct. 18, 2012 at her home. She retired from Delmarva Millwork Corp. after 17 years of service, in 2004. Following her retirement, she worked part-time at College Corner Café, Lancaster. Her daughter, Melissa, wife of Kris Price, lives in Ephrata.

Elmer E. Blocher

Elmer E. Blocher, 83, of Leola, passed away at home Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2012. He was a checker of blue prints at High Steel and an avid stamp collector. His son, Michael, husband of Kezia Blocher, lives in Denver.

Herman I. Stoltzfus

Herman I. Stoltzfus, age 87, of Cochranville, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2012 at his home. He was a dairy farmer in the Cochranville area. His brother, Raymond, husband of Loretta Jane Lehman Stoltzfus, lives in Ephrata.

Lena G. King

Lena G. King, age 86, formerly of Coatesville, passed away Monday, Oct. 15, 2012 at the Tel Hai Retirement Community of Honey Brook. Lena worked along with her late husband for 26 years in the food business, owning Kings Koffee Kitchen and Kings Kountry Kitchen of Downingtown. Her daughter, Brenda Colon, lives in Denver.

Elton Horning

Elton Horning, 82, formerly of Morgantown, passed away Saturday, Sept. 21, 2013 in hospice care at Lancaster Regional Hospital with his family at his side. Local survivors include his children: Rodney Horning husband of Janie (Reiff), New Holland; Marilyn Gehman, companion of Anthony (Howard), Reinholds and siblings: Eileen Byler of Akron and Philip M. Horning, husband of Melissa (Gill), New Holland.

Elverna L. Ulrich

Elverna L. Ulrich, 92, of Lititz, formerly of Narvon, went home to be with our Lord Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2013, surrounded by her loving family and the caring staff at Moravian Manor. Local survivors include sons: Charles W. III, married to Debra Ulrich of Ephrata; Robert A., married to Elaine Ulrich of Narvon and Donald L., married to Carol Ulrich of Denver and a daughter: Nancy, married to David R. Kaucher of Ephrata.

Ethel M. Yerger
Nov. 13, 1912 - Sept. 1, 2001

Ethel M. Yerger, age 88, of 101 West Main Street, Adamstown, Lancaster County, died Saturday at 5:30 PM in her residence under the care of Hospice of Lancaster County. Born in Robeson Township, Berks County, PA, she was a daughter of the late Victor and Rosie (Blankenbiller) Hicks. Her husband, Robert C. Yerger, died November 25, 1994. She was a member of Peace United Church of Christ, Swartzville, and enjoyed knitting, crocheting and reading. Ethel had assisted her husband in the operation of their former business, R. C. Yerger Appliance Store, Adamstown, for over 50 years. Surviving are 3 daughters, Betty L., married to Paul L. Leisey, Reinholds, PA; Joyce L., married to R. Clifford Sweigart, Akron, PA; and Rosemary Johnston, Adamstown, PA; 8 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandson. Also surviving is a sister, Verna (Hicks) Glass, Adamstown; and a brother, Brooke Grubb, Reading, PA. Mrs. Yerger was preceded in death by a son, Robert C. Jr., and a sister, Mildred (Grubb) Becker.

The funeral ceremony will be held from our parlor on Wednesday, September 5, 2001, at 11:00 AM with her pastor, The Reverend William E. Hoch, officiating. A viewing will be held one hour prior to the service with burial immediately following in Laureldale cemetery, Berks County.

RALPH H. YOUNDT, 84, of 597 Fivepointville Road, Brecknock Township, Denver, died November 18, 2001 at 12:07 PM in Mt Sinai Hospital, New York City, New York where he had been a patient since October 25, 2001. He was the husband of Fern (Smith) Youndt. They celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary. Born in Brecknock Township, he was the son the late Charles & Jennie (Hornberger) Youndt. He started Butchering at the age of 14 with a stand at the former Windsor Street Market, Reading, then at the Penn Street Farmers Market, Reading until 1995. He worked with his brothers in the business - Charles Youndt & Sons - until they sold the business. He worked for 65 years as a butcher. He was a member of Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church, Reamstown where he was a former Council member. He was a member of Howell Lodge No. 405 F.& A.M., a member of Rajah Temple A.A.S.R., Reading, and a member and founder of the Muddy Creek Hunting Lodge. He Loved Hunting & Fishing. In Addition to his wife he is survived by 1 Daughter - Lynette Y. wife of Gerald Chatanow of New York City, NY. 2 Brothers - Pherl husband of Verna (Hainley) Youndt of Leola, Donald husband of Nancy (Reider) Youndt of Denver. Also 3 Sisters - Florence widow of Russell Weinhold of Ephrata, Edna widow of David Musser of Emmaus, Stella widow of James Hawthorne of St. Petersburg, Florida. Also are 2 Granddaughters - Jill & Ivy Chatanow. He is Pre-deceased by a sister and 2 brothers.

Ralph's viewing will be held Thanksgiving evening, Thursday, November 22, 2001, from 7:00 to 9:00 PM from our funeral home and one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday. The funeral service will be held Friday, November 23, 2001, at 10:00 AM from Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church, South Reamstown Road, Reamstown, with The Reverend Glenn A. Beard, Jr. officiating. The burial will follow in Salem Union cemetery, Reamstown.

Roy L. Zander
Feb. 12, 1923 - July 11, 2001
Roy L. Zander, 78, of 188 Black Horse Road, Adamstown, Lancaster County, died Wednesday morning at 10:02 AM in the Ephrata Community Hospital where he was a patient for four days. Born in Lancaster, he was a son of the late Elam E. and Mabel M. (Steinman) Zander, and was the husband of Ethel (Rice) Zander. A navy veteran of World War II he was a life member and past trustee of the Adamstown VFW, a life member of the Lititz American Legion and a member of the Navy Club of Lebanon. He was the owner and operator of Zander’s Garage, Adamstown, for the past 52 years. Surviving in addition to his wife is a daughter, Chris Zander, Adamstown; 2 sons, Edward F., married to Laure E. (Fink) Zander, Adamstown; and Frederic A., married to Susan L. (Bath) Zander, Lincoln, Nebraska; 6 grandchildren; 1 great-granddaughter; and 2 sisters, Pauline M. Risser, Ephrata, PA; and Zelma D. Shelly, Brickerville, PA. A brother, Harold S. Zander, preceded him in death.

Grace M. Zerr
1927 - 2001

Grace was born in Shillington, Berks County, a daughter of the late Howard S. and Edna A. (Seltzer) Good. She married Elwood G. Zerr October 16, 1947 and assisted him with running the family farm. She also worked for many years for the Valley Forge Flag Company in their Womelsdorf and Sinking Spring Plants. Grace attended Immanuel Evangelical Congregational Church, Adamstown, and was a member of the Berks County Farm Bureau. Surviving in addition to her husband is a son, David G., married to Edna I. (Hippey) Zerr, Sinking Spring; a daughter, Linda J. Zerr, Pottstown; 5 grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; and a sister, Arlene, married to Edward Wartschlager, Wyomissing. A son, Kent M. Zerr, died in the Vietnam War.

The Funeral Ceremony will be held from our parlor on Friday, May 25, 2001, at 10:00 AM with Rev. Melvin H. Stehr officiating. Interment in Wyomissing cemetery, Gouglersville. A viewing will be held on Thursday evening from 7:00 to 9:00 PM.

Arlan R. Withers
August 31, 1936 - October 19, 2001

Arlan R. Withers, 65, of 90 North Reamstown Road, Reamstown, Lancaster County, died unexpectedly early Friday morning in the emergency room of Ephrata Community Hospital where he was taken after being stricken with a heart attack at his residence. Born in West Reading, Berks County, he was a son of the late Raymond Y. and Mazie W. (Kessler) Withers. He was the husband of Anna M. (Sheaffer) Withers for 43 years on July 19, 2001. Withers was the third generation owner and operator of G. S. Withers & Sons Monuments, Reamstown, for 46 years, a business founded in 1879 by his grandfather. His son, Raymond A. Withers, is associated with the family business and will continue the tradition. He was a member of the East Cocalico Lions Club of Reamstown. His wife and son are his sole survivors.

Arlan's funeral will be held on Tuesday morning, October 23, 2001, at 10:00 AM from our parlors. Burial will follow in Muddy Creek cemetery, East Cocalico Township, PA. A viewing will be held on Monday evening from 7:00 to 9:00 PM.

Kurt M. Whitaker
Oct. 20, 1970 - Aug. 4, 2001

Kurt M. Whitaker, 30, of 1153 East Main Street, Akron, Lancaster County, died in a motorcycle accident late Saturday evening on Route 272 in West Earl Township, Lancaster County, involving several cars. An autopsy will be conducted at Conestoga View, Lancaster, on Monday. Born in Ephrata, Lancaster County, he was a son of James H. Whitaker, Adamstown, Lancaster County, and Jennifer A. (DeLong) Smith, Denver, Lancaster County. He was of the catholic faith. Kurt was co-owner/operator of Whitaker Motors, Adamstown, a family business for the past 5 years. He enjoyed boating, skiing and motorcycling. Surviving in addition to his parents, are 2 brothers, Bret A., husband of Cathrine E. (Porter) Whitaker, Stevens; and Jonathan J. Whitaker, Adamstown; a sister, Kathryn P. Smith, Denver; a step-mother, Brenda L. (Mays) Whitaker, Adamstown; a step-father, D. Glen Smith, Denver; maternal grandfather, Robert DeLong, Ephrata; paternal grandmother, Eleanor (McCallicher) Whitaker, Reamstown;

A closed casket visitation will be held from our parlor on Thursday evening, August 9, 2001, from 7:00 to 9:00 PM. The funeral ceremony will be held on Friday, August 10, 2001, at 10:00 AM from Good Funeral Home.

Marguerite (Ketner) Weinhold

Marguerite K. Weinhold, 83, of 412 South Reamstown Road, Ephrata, Lancaster County, died Tuesday evening at 8:50 PM in the Ephrata Community Hospital where she was a patient since early Sunday morning. Born in Bern Township, Berks County, she was a daughter of the late Alvin and Mabel (Potteiger) Ketner, and was the wife of Ira E. Weinhold for 34 years on May 6th. She was a member of Muddy Creek Evangelical Lutheran Church, Denver. Many years ago she was employed by the Adams and Bright Drugstore, Hamburg. Marguerite enjoyed crocheting, having made numerous afghans and other items. Surviving in addition to her husband are 3 daughters, Sylvia S. (Sullivan), married to George J. Summons, Hamburg, PA; Dianne M. (Weinhold), married to John Woodson, Commerce, Georgia; Nancy A. (Weinhold), married to Patrick D. McQuate, Denver, PA; 5 sons, Richard A., married to Bonnie J. (Martz) Guarino, Hamburg, PA; David A., married to Betty Trump, Cochranville, PA; Ira A., married to Charmayne (Larry) Weinhold, Stevens, PA; Joe W., married to Bonnie (Pennell) Weinhold, Casselberry, Florida; and Bruce W., married to Debbie Weinhold, Orlando, Florida; 31 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandson. A daughter, Linda Ansel; a son, John Weinhold; and a sister, Betty Stoudt, preceded her in death.

Services will be held on Saturday, August 18, 2001, at 2:00 PM from our parlors with The Reverend Jeffrey K. Lott officiating. A viewing will be held from 1:00 to 2:00 PM. Burial will follow in Muddy Creek cemetery, East Cocalico Township, PA.
