Carolyn C. Sass
Carolyn C. Sass, of New Holland, PA died on Thursday, October 3, 2007 at Hospice of Lancaster County after a long battle with cancer. She was born in Allentown, PA to the late Joseph L. and Viola F. (Keiper) Ursprung and was married
to Ronald E. Sass.
Carolyn was confirmed at St. Stephen UCC in New Holland. She graduated from Ephrata High School in 1954 with a 1953 diploma after a year recuperating from Polio. She earned a double B.S. degree in Elementary and Special Education from Millersville University in 1968 and taught in Eastern Lancaster County Schools from then until her retirement in 1992.
Carolyn enjoyed country and bluegrass music and getting to know many of the entertainers. She also enjoyed drawing, singing with the autoharp, playing computer games and corresponding with pen pals on the internet.
She was fond of animals, especially her cat, Tigger and enjoyed wildlife like bison, eagles and wolves. Carolyn enjoyed traveling to Alaska, Nova Scotia and around mainland USA.
In addition to her husband Ronald, Carolyn is survived by a daughter, Rosalyn J. Ursprung and her husband Phillip Patterson of East Earl, PA, a grandson, Phillip Patterson, Jr., a brother, David L. Ursprung of Panama, South America, two sisters: Nancy J. McNally of Denver, PA and Susan M. Witwer of Ephrata, PA, a number of nieces and nephews and a number of great nieces and nephews.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 10 am on Tuesday, October 9, 2007 at St. Stephen UCC cemetery, 249 E. Main St., New Holland, PA with the Reverend Marlin Martin officiating. Services are under the direction of Gravenor Home For Funerals, Inc., 100 W. Main St., Ephrata, PA.

Nancy M. Monath
Nancy M. Monath, 55, passed away on September 30, 2007 at The Reading Hospital and Medical Center. She formerly resided at the Denver Nursing Home in Stevens, PA. The family would like to thank all of the doctors, nurses and clergy of The Reading Hospital and Medical Centers Trauma and ICU and past caregivers for their exceptional care of their beloved Nancy.
Born, September 20, 1952 in Philadelphia, PA, she was the daughter of the late Donald and Eleanor (McDermott) Monath. Nancy attended the Good Shepard Parish in Camp Hill and Our Mother of Perpetual Help Church in Ephrata, PA. Nancy also attended classes at St. Marys of Providence in Morgantown, PA and enjoyed singing, dancing and arts and crafts.
Nancy is survived by her brother Robert J. and his wife, Marilyn M. Monath of Denver, PA, an aunt, Elizabeth M. Sellers of Chambersburg, PA, a niece, Melissa K. Heckman and her husband Rusty S. of Mohrsville, PA, two grandnieces and a grandnephew.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to pay their respects on Wednesday, October 3, 2007, at the Gravenor Home For Funerals, 100 W. Main St., Ephrata, PA from 6 to 8 PM with a Christian Prayer Service at 8 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, October 4, 2007 at 11 AM at Our Mother of Perpetual Help Church, 320 Church Ave., Ephrata, PA. Final Commendation and Farewell will be at the Gate of Heaven in Mechanicsburg, PA.

Rudolph K. Reidenbach
Rudolph K. Reidenbach, 82, of Ephrata, PA, formerly of Lancaster, PA, went to be with his Lord on Wednesday, August 22, 2007. He was married
to Patricia A. (Bowman) Reidenbach and was the son of the late Arthur and Elizabeth (Kunkle) Reidenbach. Rudolph was the cherished father of Randolph B., husband of Dolores (Ryan) Reidenbach of Elizabethtown, PA and Amanda J. (Reidenbach), wife of Don Wolf of Ephrata. Also surviving are two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Rudolph was born in Lancaster and moved to Ephrata in 1960. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a submariner. Rudolph was a member of First United Methodist Church in Ephrata and was employed as a machine operator at various factories in the area.
Funeral services will be strictly private at the convenience of the family.
LaRue E. Wolfe
LaRue E. Wolfe, 81, of Ephrata, PA died at her residence on Thursday, October 11, 2007 after a lengthy illness. She was born in Lincoln-Ephrata, PA to the late Harvey F. and Florence I. (Hufford) Shiffler. Mrs. Wolfe's husband, Charles E. Wolfe passed away in 1973.
LaRue was employed as a Retail Store Manager at the Silco variety store and White Shield drug store of Ephrata. She was most recently employed as a clerk at the Rite Aid in Ephrata until retiring in 2004.
Mrs. Wolfe is survived by a daughter, Lola J. Wolfe with whom she resided, two sisters, Lillian E. Martin of Narvon, PA and Clarice L. Lerch of Akron, PA, two brothers, Paul G. Shiffler, husband of Vilma (Schmidt) of Ephrata and Ralph H. Shiffler of Lancaster, PA. She was preceded in death by sisters: Alberta, Enetta, Louella and Shirley and brothers: Albert, Robert, Carl, Calvin, Richard and Harold.
Friends may call at Gravenor Home For Funerals, 100 W. Main St, Ephrata from 7-9 pm on Sunday, October 14, 2007 and from 9:30-10:30 am on Monday, October 15, 2007. Funeral services will begin at 10:30 am with the Reverend Glenn Beard officiating. Interment will be in Lincoln cemetery, Apple St., Lincoln-Ephrata.

Raymond D. "Pappy" Fry
Raymond D. "Pappy" Fry, 87, of Coudersport, PA, passed away while in Buffalo, NY on Saturday, October 27, 2005 after a short illness. He was born to the late Ivan and Alice (Deibler) Fry and was a longtime resident of Lancaster County, residing in Ephrata, PA until 2002. Raymond was married
to the late Margaret M. Fry, who passed away on Feb. 5, 2002.
Raymond served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was an Auto Mechanic at the former Hunt Motors of Ephrata.
He is survived a daughter, Caroline, wife of William Chadburn of Leicester, England, two sons: Ray L. Fry, husband of Barbara (Zuck) of Reinholds, PA and Ricky L. Fry, husband of Karen (Lesher) of Genesee, PA, 8 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild and his companion, Rose Friedl of Whitesville, NY.
Raymond's family will receive friends on Saturday, November 3, 2007 from 6-8 pm at Gravenor Home For Funerals, 100 W. Main St., Ephrata, PA. Private interment with Full Military Honors will be held at Indiantown Gap National cemetery, East Hanover Twp., Lebanon Co., at the convenience of the family.
Julio Figueroa
Julio Figueroa, 76, of Ephrata, PA, formerly of Chile, South America, died on November 10, 2007 at the Ephrata Community Hospital. Julio was born in Valpaiso, Chile to the late Bartolo and Enriqueta (Toro) Figueroa and was the husband of Mery (Berrios) Figueroa.
Julio worked as a Machine Repairman in the Garment Manufacturing Industry.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters: Gioconda, wife of Mauricio Bezanilla and Ximena, wife of Alberto Garcia, all of Chile; a son, Marcos Figueroa of New Jersey, 8 grandchildren, two brothers: Hector, husband of Alda Figueroa of Chile and Pedro Figueroa of Paris, France; a sister, Luisa, wife of Jose Iglesia of Chile and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, November 15, 2007 at Gravenor Home For Funerals, Inc., 100 W. Main St., Ephrata, PA. Friends will be received from 10-11 am. Interment will be in Cedar Hill cemetery, Ephrata, PA.
Alverta L. Moore
Alverta L. Moore, passed away on Saturday, October 24, 2009, at Untied Zion Home in Warwick Township, PA after a short illness. Born in Rothsville, she was the daughter of the late James S. and Elva (Birkenbine) Long. A lifelong resident of Rothsville, Alverta recently moved to United Zion Home where she celebrated her 94th birthday this month.
Mrs. Moore was the widow of the late Charles L. Moore who preceded her in death in August 1997 after 59 years of marriage. She was a member of Grace Fellowship Church in Ephrata where earlier in life she was organist, pianist and Sunday school teacher. With her husband she enjoyed many things such as attending car shows along the East Coast and as far away as Kentucky. Alverta enjoyed traveling in all of the 50 states, Canada, Mexico and Bermuda, as well as being an avid gardener, quilter and hunter.
Alverta graduated from Rothsville High School in 1933. She was employed by the Morgan Paper Mill for 11 years and was a branch manager for Stanley Home Products for 42 years. Alverta also ran tours of Lancaster County for many years.
Alverta was often heard saying, "I love life, I love people and I love the Church."
Charles and she were members of the Antique Automobile Club of America and The Hershey Regional Antique Automobile Club.
Surviving is a daughter, Sandra J. Moore of Boston, MA; two sisters: Evelyn Marie, wife of L. Ray Ober and Kathryn, wife of Jacob B. Garman; and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, James B. Long.
There will be a viewing at Paul L. Gravenor Home For Funerals, Inc., 100 W. Main St., Ephrata, PA on Wednesday, October 28, 2009 from 5-7 p.m. and a second at Grace Fellowship Church, 822 Pointview Ave., Ephrata, PA on Thursday, October 29, 2009 from 10-11 a.m. Funeral services will follow the viewing at the church at 11 a.m. with the Reverend Frank Rice officiating. Interment will follow in Rothsville Lutheran cemetery.

Isaac G. Burkhart
Isaac G. Burkhart, 88, of Ephrata, died on Sunday, November 22, 2009 at Moravian Manor in Lititz. He was the husband of Marion R. Burkhart and a son of the late Isaac and Alta (High) Burkhart.
Mr. Burkhart graduated from Ephrata High School in 1939 and served in the U.S. Army. He was a Barber and owned and operated Burkhart's Barber Shop in Ephrata for 52 years.
He was a member of Amvets Post 136 (Past Commander), VFW Post 3376 and Cloister Post 429 American Legion, all of Ephrata. Isaac was also an avid fisherman, bird watcher and occasional hunter.
He enjoyed the challenge of the NY Times crossword puzzles and was quite the cook.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Daniel R. Burkhart, husband of Diane, of TX; daughter, Susan, wife of Brad Rettew of Akron; two grandchildren: Laura A. Rettew and Chad R. Rettew of Ephrata; three sisters: A. LaReta Hacker of Ephrata, Mildred Weaver of New Holland and Virginia Ziegler of Columbus, OH.
At his request there will be no viewing or service. A private interment will be held at the convenience of the family at Indiantown Gap National cemetery.

C. Jeanne Custer
C. Jeanne Custer, 86, of Lebanon, PA, formerly of Orwigsburg and Ephrata, PA, died on Tuesday, December 8, 2009 at Manor Care in Lebanon. Mrs. Custer was the widow of the late George H. Custer, Jr. and a daughter of the late Charles C. and Helen J. (McCoy) Cartin.
Jeanne was born in Canonsburg, PA on March 30, 1923. She was a member of Our Mother of Perpetual Help Church in Ephrata and the Catholic Daughters of America. Jeanne worked for 16 years in the office of the former Fleet Air Shoe Co. in Ephrata, retiring in 1983.
Mrs. Custer is survived by a daughter, C. Cathleen, wife of William Large of Lebanon, PA; a son, George T., husband of Lisa (Schultz) Custer of Brownstown, PA; four grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
Friends will be received from 10-11 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 11 at Paul L. Gravenor Home For Funerals, Inc., 100 W. Main St., Ephrata, PA. Christian Prayer Service will follow at 11 a.m. with Father Patrick McGarrity officiating. Final Commendation and Farewell will be held in Cedar Hill cemetery, Ephrata, PA.
Robert J. Cowan
Robert J. Cowan, 80, of East Earl, passed joyfully into the presence of His Savior and Lord at Hospice of Lancaster County, Mt. Joy, on Thursday, October 8th. Born in Pompton Lakes, NJ, he was the son of the late Robert J. and Mildred E. (Butler) Cowan. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Esther (Cowles) Cowan.
The Army kept him busy for 6 years, serving in Panama and Germany. He graduated from Lancaster School of the Bible in June, 1966 following which he served in Christian ministries several years. Later he worked at Lancaster General Hospital, from which he retired in December, 1993.
Following his retirement, he enjoyed part-time work at Yoder's Country Market in New Holland until spring of 2008 when his health began to fail.
Bob enjoyed travelling, reading and following the Phillies baseball games. He was an active member of Community Bible Church of Leola for the last 11 years and greatly enjoyed the Bible study and his friends there.
His survivors, in addition to his wife, include two daughters, Laura E. wife of Daniel Gingrich, Lancaster, Jennifer L. Barnes, Hebron, MD, and a son, Samuel E. husband of Sharon (Stith) Cowan of Vacaville, CA. His survivors also include four grandchildren.
Bob was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy (Bedwin) Cowan, and two sisters, Alma B. Jones and Marjorie Lento.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, October 13, 2009 at Community Bible Church, 169 E. Main St., Leola, PA, with Pastor John Duty officiating. Friends may greet the family prior to the service between 10 and 11 a.m. A viewing will be held at Paul L. Gravenor Home For Funerals, Inc., 100 W. Main St., Ephrata, PA from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, October 12, 2009. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.

John B. (Johnnie) Rauser, Jr.
John B. "Johnnie" Rauser, Jr., 41, of Ephrata, died on Friday, October 2, 2009 at his residence. He was a son of Mary S. Rauser and the late John B. Rauser, Sr.
Johnnie was born in Lancaster, PA and was a lifetime resident of Ephrata. He was a member of the Ephrata Church of the Nazarene and was employed at Martin's Country Market for 24 years.
His favorite hobbies were listening to the Southern Gospel Group "The Inspirations", riding his Kubota tractor and working at Martin's. He was also a Brett Favre fan.
Johnnie often talked about going to heaven to see his Dad and that's where he is now.
He touched a lot of people and will be deeply missed.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by two sisters: Penny L., wife of Day L. Fasnacht of Ephrata and Jana L., wife of Donald E. Wolfe of Reamstown, PA; two brothers: Terry Rauser of Ephrata and Tom Rauser of West Virginia; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Ephrata Church of the Nazarene, 110 Durlach Rd., Ephrata, PA 17522, from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, October 7th and from 9-10 a.m. on Thursday, October 8th. Funeral services will begin at 10 a.m. on Thursday at the church, with the Rev. Dr. B. W. Hambrick and the Rev. Ronald Richmond officiating. Interment will be at Wolf's cemetery, Ephrata, PA.
Erla F. Eberly
Erla F. Eberly, 89, of Elizabethtown, PA, formerly of Ephrata, PA, died on Sunday, September 20, 2009 at Manor Care in Elizabethtown.
Erla was born in Durlach, Clay Township, PA to the late Milton S. and Mamie M. (Frantz) Eberly. She was a member of Indiantown Mennonite Church and was retired from the former W. W. Moyer Co. of Ephrata after 34 years of employment.
Surviving are a number of nieces and nephews; Erla was the last of her immediate family.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers: Clayton, Martin, Milton and John Eberly.
Friends will be received at Indiantown Mennonite Church, 255 Indiantown Rd., Ephrata, PA 17522 from 9-10 a.m. on Wednesday, September 23, 2009. Funeral services will follow at 10 a.m. with the Reverend Stephen Martin officiating. Interment will be in the adjoining church cemetery.

Pauline E. Knauer
Pauline E. Knauer, 86, passed away on November 25, 2009 at Hospice of Lancaster County, Mt. Joy. She was ill with pancreatic cancer for the last 4 months. Pauline was the daughter of the late Hiram and Elizabeth (Shealer) Brumbach. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Knauer Jr. who passed away in1988.
Pauline was last employed as a cook at United Zion Retirement Home for 29 years until her retirement at the age of 82. She loved spending time with her grandchildren, doing word search puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, baking cookies, talking with her many friends and she also made many beautiful counted cross stitch pictures.
Pauline is survived by 5 children: Lorraine (Knauer) Bowman, wife of Robert L. Bowman, Ephrata; Donald L. Knauer, companion of Darla (Griffith) Knauer, Coudersport; Barry L. Knauer, husband of Sally (Garber) Knauer, Lititz; Debra K. (Knauer) Stoessel, Denver; Larry Knauer, husband of Sue (Hainley) Knauer, Reinholds; 4 grandchildren: Bryan Knauer, Amy Stoessel, Vanessa Knauer and Danielle Knauer; 2 step-grandchildren: Don Garber and Todd Reed; 2 step-great-grandchildren, Hannah Garber and Suede Reed; 2 sisters: Verna Munden, Pembroke Pines, Fla, Miriam Spotts, Neffsville and one brother, Lester Brumbach of Manheim.
She was a member of Middle Creek Church of the Brethren.
Funeral services will be held at Middle Creek Church of the Brethren, 351 Middle Creek Road, Lititz on Saturday, November 28 at 10 am. A viewing will be held from 8:30 am until 10am prior to the service. Interment will follow the service at the Middle Creek cemetery adjacent to the church.
