Marilyn J. Shearer, 54, of Connellsville (Dunbar Township), passed away early Sunday morning, Aug. 6, 2000, at her home. Friends and family will be received in the BROOKS FUNERAL HOME INC., 111 E. Green St., Connellsville, Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. A funeral service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the funeral home with the Rev. Larry R. Hellein officiating. A committal service and interment will follow in the Indian Creek Baptist Cemetery, Mill Run.
William S. Shotts
Mt. Pleasant
William S. Shotts, 76, of Mt. Joy Road, Mt. Pleasant, formerly of Scottdale, died Sunday, Aug. 6, 2000, in UPMC Shadyside. He was born Feb. 20, 1924, in Greensburg, the son of the late Donald and Edna Stewart Shotts. William was a member of St. Pius X Roman Catholic Church, Mt. Pleasant. He was a retired design draftsman for Westinghouse Bettis Atomic Power Plant, Dravosburg, with 30 years of service. He was also a former employee of Uptegraff Manufacturing Co., Scottdale. William was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army's 176th Quartermaster Co. in Korea, attaining the rank of Tec 5. He was a recipient of the Good Conduct and Victory medals, the American Theater Ribbon, the EAME Theater Ribbon, the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon. He was a life member of the Mt. Pleasant VFW Post 3368 and a social member of the Mt. Pleasant Firemen's Club. William leaves to cherish his memories, his wife, Elsie M. McConnell Sylka Shotts; a daughter, Claire E. Guckes and her husband, Barry, of Baltimore, Md.; and a son, James W. Shotts and his wife, Mary Ann (Mismas), of Ruffsdale RD1, and their son, David Shotts. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Finnerty Shotts on May 12, 1987; a son, David E. Shotts on July 7, 1956; and a sister, Jane M. Lyons on Sept. 5, 1995. Bill's family will receive friends in the FRANK KAPR FUNERAL HOME INC., 417 W. Pittsburgh St., Scottdale, Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A blessing service will be held Thursday at 11:30 a.m., followed by his Funeral Mass to be celebrated at noon in St. Pius X R.C. Church, Mt. Pleasant, with the Rev. Michael W. Matusak as celebrant. Interment will follow in St. John the Baptist Parish Cemetery, Scottdale, where the Mt. Pleasant VFW Post 3368 will render full military honors.

Marilyn A. Tompkins, 62, of Greensburg, died Sunday, Aug. 6, 2000, at her home. She was born Sept. 20, 1937, in Jeannette, a daughter of the late Edgar R. and Minnie McMarlin McCullough. She had been employed by the Monsour Medical Center in Jeannette for many years. She was Protestant by faith. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a son, Dennis K. Tompkins; and two brothers , William and Edgar McCullough. She is survived by her husband, Daniel J. Tompkins; three daughters , Cynthia Bollinger of Greensburg, Pam Bush of Jeannette and Vickie Mahl and her husband, Brian, of Manor; seven grandchildren; a great-grandson; and three sisters , Sylvia Antonucci of Penn Township, Virginia Carroll of Lincoln Heights and Clora Francis and her husband, Samuel, of Greensburg. Friends will be received at the BARNHART FUNERAL HOME, 505 E. Pittsburgh St., Greensburg, Tuesday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Services will be held in the funeral home Wednesday at a time to be announced. Interment will follow in the St. Clair Cemetery. Should friends desire, memorials may be placed with the Westmoreland Hospice, 532 W. Pittsburgh St., Greensburg.
John R. Velkey Sr.

John R. Velkey Sr., 65, of Latrobe, died Monday, Aug. 7, 2000, in Westmoreland Regional Hospital, Greensburg. He was born Nov. 18, 1934, in Lloydsville, a son of the late Paul A. Sr. and Barbara Takatch Velkey. He was a member of St. Vincent Basilica, Latrobe. He was retired from the LD Construction Co., and was a member of Local #9 Bricklayers Union. He served in the U.S. Army National Guard during the Korean conflict. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by an infant daughter, Debbie Velkey; two brothers , Paul A. Velkey Jr. and Thomas F. Velkey; and a sister, Barbara C. Monroe. Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Nellie J. Garris Velkey; two sons , John R. Velkey Jr. of Latrobe and Mark M. Velkey and his wife, Carol, of Pleasant Unity; three daughters , Julia Velkey of Latrobe, Kathy Donahey and her husband, Richard, of Latrobe, and Cindy Stemmler and her husband, Richard, of Pleasant Unity; two brothers , Steve Velkey and Joseph Velkey, both of Latrobe; and a sister, Betty Ann Johnston and her husband, Roy B., of Erie. Also survived by eight grandchildren, Chris, Jeremy, Dean, Joshua, Matthew, Ashley, Richard and Lisa; and a number of nieces and nephews. Friends will be received Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the JOHN J. LOPATICH FUNERAL HOME INC., 601 Weldon St., Latrobe. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday at 10 a.m. in St. Vincent Basilica. Interment in Unity Cemetery, Unity Township. military services will be held Thursday at 9:15 a.m. in the funeral home.

Word has been received of the death of Fredrick M. Wehrli, 63, of Spotsylvania, Va., son of the late Fredrick T. and Rose M. Wehrli of Wilmerding. Survived by his wife, Inez Watson Wehrli of Virginia; a son, Michael of Arlington, Texas ; a daughter, Suzanne of Missouri; and a brother, Thomas of North Huntingdon. Margaret A. Werner

Margaret A. Werner, 93, died Saturday, Aug. 5, 2000 in St. John's Lutheran Care Center, Mars. Born Dec. 14, 1906 in Pittsburgh, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Mathilda Brant Werner. Miss Werner was an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary since 1939. She served in every major office in the Allegheny County Council, including president in 1953. She recently was recognized for her work with veterans during Margaret Werner Day at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in O'Hara. She accumulated more than 18,000 volunteer hours there. Survivors include a sister, Edith Spencer of Spring Hill, Fla. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Eleanor Werner; and three brothers , Edward Werner, Richard Werner and William Werner. Christian Funeral Mass will be at noon Tuesday in St. Boniface Worship Site, Holy Wisdom Parish. Burial will be in North Side Catholic Cemetery. Arrangements by SCHELLHAAS FUNERAL HOME, West View.

Catherine M. Wild, 95, formerly of McKeesport, died Monday, Aug. 7, 2000, in the Maguire Personal Care Home, McKeesport. She was born Feb. 26, 1905, in McKeesport, a daughter of the late George and Dora Strager. She was a member of St. Angela Merici Church, White Oak. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harry N. Wild; two brothers , Joseph and George Strager; and two sisters , Sadie Zezza and Ann Lucas. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Pete Jackowski of North Huntingdon; two brothers , David Strager of Acme and Frank Strager of Liberty Borough; three sisters , Vera Cooper of Liberty Borough, Dolly Fullard of Acme and Audrey Greco of Shippenville; three grandchildren; and two great-granddaughters. Friends will be received at the SHIRLEY-KUKICH FUNERAL HOME INC., Clay Pike, Circleville, North Huntingdon, Tuesday from 2 to 9 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday at 11 a.m. in St. Angela Merici Church, White Oak, followed by interment in Richland Cemetery, Dravosburg.
Wilkus R. Wingrove

Wilkus R. Wingrove, 76, of Derry, died Saturday, Aug. 5, 2000, at his home. He was born Aug. 19, 1923, in Iron Bridge, a son of the late Harry E. and Ruth Leonard Wingrove. Prior to retirement, he had been an employee of Latrobe Foundry for 43 years. A POW for 15 months, he was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of Derry Presbyterian Church, AMVETS Post 88 and VFW Post 33 of Greensburg, and the Greek Club of Snydertown. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Alice M. Hutchison Wingrove, in 1990; and a brother, Samuel E. Wingrove. Wilkus is survived by two daughters , Mrs. James (Judy) Skoloda and Mrs. Lawrence (Nancy) Woitkowiak, both of Latrobe; four granddaughters, Michele Cowan, Lori Bridge, Jamie Skoloda and Jennifer Woitkowiak; two grandsons, Larry Woitkowiak and Brian Skoloda; three great-grandchildren, Christopher and Caitlin Bridge and Hannah Woitkowiak; a sister, Geraldine Dillon of Sheridan, Ore.; and a special friend, Betty Furr of Greensburg. The family received friends Monday and will receive friends Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the MICHAEL J. QUINLISK FUNERAL HOME INC., 548 N. Dorothy V. Wise, 78, of Greensburg RD6, went to be with our Lord and Savior Sunday, Aug. 6, 2000, at the Westmoreland Regional Hospital, Greensburg. Born Aug. 15, 1921, in Hempfield Township, a daughter of the late Roy Taylor and Idella Mae Henry Herrod. She was preceded in death by her husband, Homer E. Wise, on July 17, 2000. Surviving are a son, Roy R. Wise and his wife, Linda, of East Freedom, Pa.; a daughter, Nancy L. Wise of Greensburg RD6; six grandchildren, Wendy Weltz and her husband, Charles, Robert E. Wise and his wife, Susie, Susan Hinerman, Patricia A. Wise, Ricky A. Wise and his wife, Diana, and Dotty L. Gruska and her husband, Gary; seven great-grandchildren, Dalinah Weltz, Bobby and Dustin Wise, Nicole Hinerman, Amber and Jimmy Hinerman, and Alicia Daerr; and two great-great-grandchildren, Adam and Andrew Hinerman; and two sisters , Ruth Schmidt of Adamsburg and Jean Karr of Evanston, Pa. Betty A. Kubena Wisniewski, 76, a longtime resident of Mt. Pleasant (Bullskin Township), died unexpectedly Sunday, Aug. 6, 2000, at her residence. She was born Aug. 31, 1923, in Cokeburg ( Washington County), a daughter of the late Robert and Angela Mynar Kubena. Betty was a longtime member of St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, Everson, and its Holy Rosary Society and Ladies Guild. She was a retired clerk with 15 years of service at Ames Department Store, and had been associated with the Ivrea sisters of Montessouri School, Bullskin Township, for over 20 years. Betty is survived by her loving family: a daughter, Marilyn Kunkle and her husband, James "Bill," of Crown Point, Ind., and their children, Allison, Keith, Lauren and Aaron Kunkle; a son, John W. Wisniewski and his wife, Jayne (Siwula), of Everson, and their children, Lori Beth, Julie Ann and Beth Ann Wisniewski; and a brother, Louis Kubena and his wife, Esther, of Southington, Conn. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John R. Wisniewski, on March 6, 1993; six brothers , William (killed in action during World War II), Leon in 1988, Robert on July 12, 1986, Bohumil in 1977, Anthony on April 12, 1987 and Eman Kubena on Jan. 22, 1983; and a sister, Mary V. Mae Worton, 83, formerly of Munhall, died Monday, August 7, 2000. She was the wife of the late Kenneth K. Worton and mother of Nancy W. Saracco of Jefferson Hills and Kenneth K. Worton II of Dormont. She is also survived by six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She was a member of the Anne Ashley United Methodist Church in Munhall and the AARP Thompson Club. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in the GEORGE IRVIN GREEN FUNERAL HOME INC., 3511 Main St., Munhall. Services will be at 10 a.m. on Thursday.
