Robert Miller
Robert J. Miller, Sr., 82, formerly of Tower City, died Friday, Sept. 16, 2005, at his daughters home in Williamstown, with whom he resided.
Born in Tower City on Sept. 7, 1923, he was a son of the late Harry and Myrtle Jones Miller.

He was a baker all of his life, working for the former Coopers Bakery and then he and his wife owned and operated the former Tower City Bake Shop. He retired as a supervisor from PennDOT, Harrisburg.

He was of the Protestant faith and belonged to the American Legion. Robert was a World War II Air Force Veteran and of the Navy Reserve.

He was predeceased by his wife, Juanita Coleman Miller in 1990; a step-son, Charles Russell; five brothers; a sister; and two step-sisters.

Surviving are his daughter, Shirley C. Malick with whom he resided; three sons, James R., of Williamstown, John R. of CA, and Robert J., Jr. "Fritz" of Muir; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Graveside services with full military honors will be held Wednesday, Sept. 21, at 11 a.m., from the Greenwood cemetery, Tower City, R.D., with Rev. Charlene Reitz.

Memorial donations may be made to American Cancer Society, 16 N. 4th Street, Minersville, PA 17954. Dimon Funeral Homes, has charge of arrangements.

Cloyd Reitz
Cloyd E. “Ed” Reitz, 90, of Rebuck, died Thursday, Sept. 15, 2005, at the home of his daughter in RR 1, Herndon with whom he resided.
Born in RR 1, Dornsife, Jan. 13, 1915, he was a son of the late Daniel and Jane Schreffler Reitz. He was educated in the Herndon area schools.

He was a retired carpenter, having been employed by the H.B. Alexander Construction Co., Inc., Harrisburg.

He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the US Army.

He was a member of Himmel’s Lutheran Church, Rebuck; a life member of the Herndon Fire Co; life member of the Alvin E. Long American Legion Post 287 of Lebanon; former member of the Keystone Carpenter’s Union, Local No. 287 of Lebanon; and a former member of the Mahanoy Lodge No. 551, IOOF of RR1, Dornsife.

He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Catherine L. Drumheller, who died Sept. 1, 2003; two grandsons, Lynn and Larry Reitz; and two brothers, Robert and Allen Reitz.

Surviving are a son, Lamar E. of Klingerstown; a daughter, Leah N. Underkoffler of RR1 Herndon; a sister, Violet Rebuck of RR2 Shamokin; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Monday, Sept. 19, at Himmel’s Church, Rebuck, with the Rev. Frederick Faust officiating. Interment was in Himmel’s cemetery, Rebuck. Stephen R. Rothermel Funeral Home, Klingerstown, was in charge of arrangements.

Robert Shomper
Robert R. Shomper, 78, of Tempe, AZ, died Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2005, at Friendship Village, after being ill for a long time.
He was a 1944 graduate of the former Lykens High School; had retired from Atlantic Richfield, Los Angeles; was a Navy Veteran of World War II and was involved with the Boy Scouts in the Harrisburg area many years ago.

He was the son of the late John and Esther Challenger Shomper.

Surviving are his wife, Betty Schmid Shomper, formerly of Milwaukee, WI; four sisters, Elizabeth Fischer of Elizabethtown, Faye Welker of Elizabethville, Gail Long of R.D., Millersburg, and Anita Schmiedel of Dover.

Memorial services were held Sunday, Sept. 18, at the Friendship Village Chapel.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Friendship Village of Tempe Foundation, 2645 East Southern Avenue, Tempe, AZ 85282.

Thelma Sweigard
Thelma Lucille "Lucy" Sweigard, 77, of Halifax, died Thursday, Sept. 15, 2005, at her daughters home.
Born March 26, 1928, in Harrisburg, she was a daughter of the late Lee R. and Thelma Rhinehart Hoffman.

She was a member of St. Peter's "Fetterhoff's" Lutheran Church, Halifax. She had memberships with, Order of the Amaranth No. 134, Millersburg; OES Glen Chapter No. 425, Lykens; past member of the American Farm Women's Association; and Halifax Area Garden Club.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles E. Sweigard, Jr. and a brother, Gerald L. Hoffman.

Surviving are a son, Michael A. Sweigard of Harrisburg; four daughters, Suzanne K. Witmer of Halifax, Carol L. Eppley of Halifax, Karen E. Heikes of Millville, DE., and Helen E. Enders of Halifax; and a sister, Gladys M. Pringle of Port Royal; 14 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Religious Service at Hoover Funeral Homes, Inc., Millersburg, Monday, Sept. 19th, with Rev. Phil Kneier officiating. Interment was in Long's cemetery Halifax.

Donations may be made to Pinnacle Health Hospice, 3705 Elmwood Drive, Harrisburg, PA 17110 or American Diabetes Association, 3544 N. Progress Ave., Suite 202, Harrisburg, PA 17110. Hoover Funeral Homes, Inc., Millersburg, was in charge of arrangements.

Marlin Whitcomb
Marlin R. Whitcomb, Sr., 84, of Tower City, died Saturday, Sept. 17, 2005, at his home.
Born in Gratz on July 21, 1921, he was a son of the late George and Eartha Williard Whitcomb.

He was a World War II Army Veteran. He was a member of the Christ United Methodist Church, Tower City. He had raised and trained racing horses and was a member of the U.S. Harness Racing Association. He also collected and enjoyed working on antique cars, and was retired from the former TRW, Harrisburg.

He was predeceased by a brother, Clair and a sister, Myrtle Engle.

Surviving are his wife, Ida Mae Hoffman Whitcomb, to whom he was married 63 years; a son, Marlin R., Jr. of Williamstown; a daughter, Linda L. Reed of Lykens R.D.; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held Wednesday, Sept. 21, at 11:30 a.m. from his church, with Rev. Paul Baughman. Burial with full military honors will be held at the convenience of the family, at Indiantown Gap National cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to his church, 4th Street and Grand Avenue, Tower City, PA 17980; Tower Porter Ambulance Association, P.O. Box 33, Tower City, PA 17980 or Pinnacle Health Hospice, One Norweigen Plaza, Pottsville, PA 17901. Dimon Funeral Homes, has charge of arrangements.

Anna Williams
Anna Elizabeth Williams, 96, formerly of Valley View, died Friday, Sept. 16, 2005, at Tremont Health and Rehabilitation Center, Tremont.
Born in Red Cross, Sept. 29, 1908, a daughter of the late Jay and Vesta Erdman Zartman.

She retired from the former Philmark Mfg, Co., Valley View. She was also part owner of the former Midland Theater, Valley View.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church Valley View.

She was a charter member of the Tri-Valley Senior Citizens; a member of the Mahantongo Senior Citizens, Gratz Historical Society, American Legion Post 575 Auxiliary, and the Valley View Fire Co. Auxiliary.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl E Williams who died in 1980; a daughter Helen E Artz in 2002; a grandson Richard Artz in 1998; three brothers Daniel, Fred, and Clarence Zartman; and two sisters Carrie Snyder and Mary Barnhardt.

Surviving are four grandchildren, Kim W. Artz of Reading, Venessa Y. Engle of Perkasie, Travis C Artz of Thailand, and Jamey E Artz of West Lawn.

Funeral services will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, Valley View, at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 21, with Rev. Carl Shankweiler officiating assisted by Rev. Curtis Zemencik. A viewing will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. on Wednesday at the church. Interment will be made in the Church of God cemetery, Valley View.

Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church Valley View PA 17983 or to the American Red Cross, Katrina Relief Fund. Buffington-Reed Funeral Home, Valley View, is in charge of arrangements.

Raymond Williams
Raymond L. Williams, 58, of RR1, Herndon, died Thursday, Sept. 15, 2005, at the Sunbury Community Hospital. Prior to entering the hospital, he had been a patient at Manor Care, Sunbury, since Aug. 28.

Born in RR 1, Herndon, Nov. 24, 1946, he was a son of the late Raymond J. and Alma Whery Williams.

He was educated in the Mahanoy Joint High School, Mandata. He was of the Protestant faith. He was a laborer and a coal miner.

He was a US Army veteran, having served his country as a helicopter mechanic in 1967 and 1968 in Vietnam.

Surviving are two sisters, Arlene Wehry of Klingerstown and Daisy Lenker of Enola; a brother, Ervin Williams of Millersburg; five nieces and three nephews.

Funeral services will be private and at the convenience of the family. Stephen R. Rothermel Funeral Home, Klingerstown, was in charge of arrangements.

Raymond C.H. Campbell, Sr.
Raymond C.H. “Bud” Campbell, Sr., 82, of Fisherville, died Sunday, Aug. 28, 2005, at his residence.

Born in Loyalton, June 19, 1923, he was a son of the late Raymond C. and Beulah Baer Campbell.

He was retired foreman at the former L. B. Smith Inc., Camp Hill.

He was a member of Faith United Methodist Church in Fisherville; member and past president of Fisherville Fire Co.; lifetime member of Elizabethville Fire Co.; Dauphin County Fireman’s' Association; Fisherville Fire police and Fraternal order of police.

He was preceded in death by a great-grandson, Todd Maus; two brothers, Earl, Glen, Sr., Fred, Sr.; and four sisters, Catherine Shertzer, Yvonne Buffington, Marion Zimmerman, Patricia Michaels.

Surviving are his wife of 61 years of Grace N. Wertz Campbell; two daughters, Beverly Gonder, and Cindy Stoneroad; two sons, Wayne and Raymond, Jr.; two sisters, Dorothy Wertz and Jean Shultz, both of Halifax; 14 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be held Wednesday, Aug. 31, at 11. a.m. at Faith U. M. Church in Fisherville with Pastor Gail Boyer officiating. There will be a viewing on Wednesday from 10 to 11 a.m. at Faith U. M. Church. Interment will be at Straw's Church cemetery Halifax, RD.

Donations may be made to Pinnacle Health Hospice, 3705 Elmwood Drive, Harrisburg, PA 17110; to his church, P. O. Box 653, Halifax, PA 17032; or to Fisherville Fire Co., P.O. Box 625, Halifax, PA 17032. Hoover Funeral Homes, Inc., Elizabethville, is in charge of arrangements.

Carl T. Carroll
Funeral services for Carl T. Carroll, 47, of Williamstown, who died Aug. 20 from injuries in a roadside attack in Iraq, were held Tuesday, Aug. 30, from Williamstown United Methodist Church with the Rev. Robert Ellis Stump officiating. Interment with full military honors was in Williamstown United Methodist cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to Williamstown United Methodist Church, East and Spruce Streets, Williamstown, PA 17098. Dimon Funeral Homes Inc., Williamstown, was in charge of arrangements.

Esther M. Christ
Esther M. Christ, 86, a resident of Tremont Health and Rehabilitation Center, formerly of Pottsville, died Saturday at Tremont Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Born in Pottsville, Jan. 30, 1919, she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Mary Wollyung Lawlor. She was a graduate of Pottsville Catholic High School.

She was a member of St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church, Pottsville.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James J.; her son, Thomas J.; four sisters, Margaret Lawlor, Sister Mary Julitta, S.S.J., Mary McCabe and Isabelle Yeasted.

Surviving are several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was the last member of her immediate family.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 31, in St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church. Friends may call from 9 a.m. until the time of Mass on Wednesday at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Patrick's Church Memorial Fund, 319 Mahantongo St. Pottsville, PA 17901. Interment will be in Calvary cemetery, Hillside, Pottsville.

Marie F. Phillips
Marie F. Phillips, 51, of Tower City, died Thursday, Aug. 18, 2005, at her home.

Survived are her mother, Joan Prinkey of Tower City; her son, Brian of Tower City; two sisters Rita Hanson of Pillow, Ruth Shutt of Orwin; a brother, Anthoney Verzicco of Tower City.

Services were private. Interment was in Philadelphia. Dimon Funeral Homes Inc., Tower City, was in charge of arrangements.
