Gilbert V.W. Hoover
Gilbert V.W. Hoover, 92, of Elizabethville, died February 3, 2004, at the Holy Spirit Hospital, East Pennsboro Township.

Born on March 7, 1911 in Washington Township, he was a son of the late John E. and Katie A. Troxell Hoover.

He was a retired Landscape Supervisor for the Mechanicsburg Navy Depot, Mechanicsburg; the former owner of the former Hoover Yew Garden Nursery, Elizabethville; and worked in the past for the Mechanicsburg Army Depot, Mechanicsburg and the Ned Rich Shirt Co., Elizabethville. He was an Army Veteran of World War II. He was a lifetime member of the Fearnot Assembly of God Church, Hegins.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Loretta E. Reiber Hoover; a son, Merle Hoover; two brothers, Allen and Mervin Hoover; and a sister, Myra Fisher.

Surviving are a son, Verne L. Hoover and a daughter, Kathleen E. Hoover, both of Elizabethville; a granddaughter; and two great-granddaughters.

Graveside services were held at Maple Grove cemetery, Elizabethville on Saturday, February 7.

Memorial Donations may be made to his church at Box 83-B, R.D. #1, Hegins, PA 17938.

Hoover Funeral Home Inc., Elizabethville was in charge of arrangements.

Sandra L. Hoover
Sandra L. Hoover, 53, of Millersburg, died Friday, Feb. 6, 2004, at her residence.

Born in Harrisburg, she was a daughter of William Beard who survives her of Millersburg and the late Anna Brown Beard.

She had worked at the Susquehanna Lutheran Village as a nurses aide. She was a member of the Paxton Bible Church and volunteered with the Meals on Wheels program in Millersburg area.

In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by a brother, Ken Beard.

Surviving in addition to her father are her husband, Edward W. Hoover; three sons, Ed of Millersburg, Shane of Dalmatia, and Chris of Millersburg; a daughter, Angel Laudenslager of Halifax; two brothers, Jeffrey and Paul of Millersburg; two sisters, Tracey Deibler of Elizabethton, TN and Dawn Dauberman of Williamstown; 11 grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.

Services were held on Tuesday Feb. 10, at Reigles Bible Fellowship, Millersburg. Interment was in Salem Lutheran cemetery, Killinger.

Memorial contributions may be made to VNA Hospice, 3315 Derry Street, Harrisburg, PA 17111. Hoover Funeral Homes, Inc., Millersburg, was in charge of arrangements.

Norman W. Kembel
Norman Woodward Kembel, 93, of Hegins, died Monday, Feb. 9, 2004, at the Tremont Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Born May 17, 1910 in Pillow, he was a son of the late Joseph and Cora Hummel Kembel.

He retired as a coal miner from William Carl Mining, Hegins.

He was a member of Friedens United Church of Christ, Hegins.

He was preceded in death by four brothers Edward, Lee, Earl, and Ralph Kembel and by two sisters Carolyn Wiest and Mae Gise.

Surviving are a daughter Grace M. Wedde of Hegins; two sisters Ethel Wiest of Gratz and Cathryn Thomas of Tremont; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 12, at Friedens United Church of Christ, Hegins, with the Rev. Claude Schach officiating. A viewing will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. on Thursday at the church. Interment will be in Friedens cemetery, Hegins.

Memorial contributions can be made to Friedens United Church of Christ, Hegins PA 17938. Buffington-Reed Funeral Home, Valley View, is in charge of arrangements.

John K. Maletich
John K. Maletich, 49, of Lykens Twp., died Sunday, Feb. 8, 2004, at home.

Surviving are his wife, Robin M. Maletich; his mother, Betty Maletich of Lykens; two brothers, Charles of Maine and Joseph of Wiconisco.

Memorial services will be held at the convenience of the family. John R. Shultz Funeral Home, Lykens, is in charge of arrangements.

Dale R. Maurer
Dale R. Maurer, 67, of ManorCare, West Reading, formerly of Ashland and Pitman, died Thursday, Feb. 5, 2004, at ManorCare.

Born at Kulpmont, July 26, 1936, he was a son of the late Harold and Chesta Seiler Maurer.

He was a retired employee of the former Dan Steel Corporation, Reading, and had previously worked in other various factories. He was educated in the Mt. Carmel area schools.

He was of the Protestant faith.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Klinger Maurer; an infant daughter, Sharen Kay Maurer; a brother, William H. Maurer; and two sisters, Marilyn J. Hummel and Mary Louise Houser.

Surviving are three daughters, Christine Maurer of Pottsville, Leisa Leymeister of Orwigsburg, and Patty Breiner of Barnsville; a son, Leroy Maurer of Orwigsburg; five sisters, Carolann Laughlin of Locust Gap, Helen Sweigart of Hamburg, Jean Wallace of Ashland, Catherine Duff of Lexington, Kentucky, and Joan Ribarchik of Bristol; two brothers, James C. Maurer of Hershey, and Nevin A Maurer, Sr. of Halifax; three grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Monday, Feb. 9, from the Stephen R. Rothermel Funeral Home, Klingerstown, with the Rev. John Clough officiating. Interment was in the Zion Evangelical Congregational cemetery, Pitman.

In order to defray funeral expenses, contributions may be made to the Stephen R. Rothermel Funeral Home, 1133 Ridge Road, Klingerstown, PA 17941. The Stephen R. Rothermel Funeral Home, Klingerstown, was in charge of arrangements.

Guy G. Moyer
Guy G. Moyer, 89, formerly of Steelton and Lykens, died Friday, Feb. 6, 2004, in the Carlisle Hospital.

He was retired from the Bethlehem Steel Corp. and was a member of St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Highspire.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys M. Moyer; a son, Richard G. Moyer; and a daughter, Linda Moyer Engle.

Surviving are a son, Darryl C. Moyer of New Cumberland; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a cousin, Martha Staub of Lykens.

Services were held on Tuesday, Feb. 10, in the Stone & Murray Funeral Home, New Cumberland, with the Reverend Harold S. Fox officiating. Interment was in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, Lower Paxton Twp.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 240 Broad Street, P.O. Box 97, Highspire, PA 17034.

Elsie V. Peifer
Mrs. Elsie V. Peifer, 79, formerly of Pillow, died Wednesday, February 4, 2004, at Susquehanna Lutheran Village, Millersburg.

Born in Dalmatia, August 2, 1924, she was a daughter of the late Wayne and Katie Witmer Engle.

She was a member of Salem Zion Church, Pillow; Penn Ferry Doll Club; Millersburg Garden Club and Eastern Star.

She was preceded in death by her husband of more than 50 years, Albert L. Peifer; two sisters, Vivian Kauffman and Leah Deppen.

Surviving are two sons, Rick A. Peifer of Camp Hill, and Todd W. Peifer of Millersburg; two daughters, Cheryl A. Hoffman of Berrysburg, and C. Jayne Adams of Enola; two brothers, Kermit Witmer of Dalmatia, and John Witmer of Millersburg; three sisters, Bette Moore of Florida, Dollie Davis of Florida, and Brenda Smeltz of Valley View; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A celebration of life was held at Salem Zion Church, Pillow, on Sunday, February 8, with the Reverend Daniel L. Busch officiating. Interment was at the convenience of the family.

Memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer's Association of Central PA, 3544 N. Progress Avenue, Suite 205, Harrisburg, PA 17110. Myers Funeral Home, Mechanicsburg, was in charge of arrangements.

Dorothy I. Smith
Dorothy Irene Smith, 83, of Valley View, died Sunday, Feb. 8, 2004, at the Friendly Nursing Home, Pitman.

Born July 20, 1920 in Valley View, she was a daughter of the late Charles and Nora Bixler Carl.

She was a retired trimmer from the former Philmark Mfg., Valley View.

She was a member of St. Andrew's United Methodist Church, Valley View.

Her first husband Clyde I. Moyer died in 1949 and her second husband Jesse M. Smith died in 1986.

She was preceded in death by a brother Melvin Bixler.

Surviving are a son Leroy C. Moyer of Dover, Del; three daughters Rose M. Morgan of Valley View, Donna D. Schwartz of Fountain, and Cynthia L. Bernd of Valley View; a brother Clarence H. Carl of Reading; 11 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Feb. 12, at St. Andrew's United Methodist Church, Valley View, with the Rev. William Danis officiating. Viewing will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. on Thursday at the church.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Hegins Area Ambulance Assoc., Valley View, PA 17983. Buffington-Reed Funeral Home, Valley View, is in charge of arrangements.

Johnny L. Speer
Johnny L. Speer, 44, of Pottsville Pa, died Saturday, Feb. 7, 2004, at the Pottsville Hospital.

Born on March 7, 1959 in Gulfport, Miss. he was a son of Sandra L Speer Merwine.

Surviving are his parents Lewis F and Sandra L Speer Merwine of R.D. Ashland; four sons Shawn Speer of Pottsville, John Speer of Schuylkill Haven, Kyle Speer of McAdoo, and Cody Speer of Hazelton; a daughter Alonna Speer of McAdoo; a brother Craig A Merwine of R.D. Ashland; two sisters Renee Daniel and Gail Neumeister both of Pottsville and a granddaughter.

Services will be held at a later date.

Memorial contributions toward the funeral expenses can be made to the Gratz National Bank, P.O. Box 816, Valley View PA 17983.

Jacque A. Wertz
Jacque A. Wertz, 75, of Elizabethville, died at home Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004.

Born January 6, 1929 in Elizabethville, he was a son of the late Albert "Aps" and Mildred Sultzbaugh Wertz.

He was a mechanic for most of his life, working for Gulf Oil on the Pennsylvania Turnpike and Swab Wagon Company, Elizabethville. He was the former owner of the West End Garage, Elizabethville for 27 years.

He was a life member of Reliance Hose Co. No.1, Elizabethville for 53 years and active with many committees and projects. He served as Assistant Chief for 17 years and Chief for 5 years. In 1958 he helped start the first community ambulance service for Elizabethville and was active for 20 years. He was the Elizabethville Borough Civil Defense Director from 1958- 1961.

As a life member of the Dauphin County Volunteer Fireman's Association, he served as President in 1960 and was financial secretary for 20 years. He was also a life member of Duncannon Fire Co.; a member of the Fireman's Association of the State of PA; Cumberland Valley Volunteer Fireman's Association; Moose Lodge No. 59, Millersburg; Fraternal Order of Police Keystone Lodge 41A; and the American Legion, John Lloyd Post No. 404. He belonged to the Salem United Church of Christ, Elizabethville.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Doris M. Dowell and his daughter, Susan Marie.

Surviving are a son, Michael of Elizabethville; two sisters, Bette Kupp and Jeanne Klinger, both of Lykens; and two grandchildren.

Services were held at his church on Monday, Feb. 9. Interment was in Maple Grove cemetery, Elizabethville.

Memorial donations may be made to Reliance Hose Co. No. 1, P.O. Box 239, or Upper Dauphin Center Emergency Services, 466 W. Main Street, both of Elizabethville, PA 17023. Hoover Funeral Home Inc., Elizabethville, was in charge of arrangements.

Bruce O. Bobb
Bruce Oliver Bobb, 85, of Herndon, died Monday, January 26, 2004, at Milton S. Hershey Medical Center.

Born in Allentown, February 1, 1918, he was a son of the late William and Tamie Bohner Bobb.

He was retired from the U.S. Air Force, having served in World War II. He was a member of Zion Stone Valley United Lutheran Church, Dalmatia; a member of the VFW Post 2385 of Lykens; and served as Herndon Borough secretary for many years.

Surviving are his wife, Erma Keen Bobb; a daughter, Janette Witmer of Millerstown; three brothers, Ned Bobb of Allentown, and William Bobb and Dean Bobb, both of Herndon; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Religious services were held Saturday, January 31, at James A. Reed Funeral Home, Pillow, with the Rev. Daniel Busch officiating. Interment was in Stone Valley cemetery, Dalmatia. James A. Reed Funeral Home, Dalmatia, was in charge of arrangements.
