Fern A. Scheib
Fern Alfretta Scheib, 77, of Tremont, died Wednesday, June 9, 2004, at the Tremont Nursing and Rehabilitation Center,
Born in Valley View, October 1, 1926, she was a daughter of the late Simon and Verda Underkoffler Romberger.
She was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church, Tremont.
She was also a member of the Tremont Area Senior Citizens.
She was preceded in death by her husband Vernon E. Scheib, who died in 1996.
She was preceded in death by a son Warren V. Scheib and by a step-sister Carol Zerbe.
Surviving are a son Brian L. Scheib of Schuylkill Haven; two daughters Darlene K Bettinger of Tremont and Marie E. Cooper of Chambersburg; three brothers Clair Romberger of Harrisburg, Dean Romberger of Harrisburg, and Lamar Romberger of Tremont; 13 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and a great-great-granddaughter.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, June 12, at the Buffington-Reed Funeral Home, Valley View, with the Rev. Donald Boyd officiating. Interment was in the United Methodist Cemetery, Tremont.

Betty M. Welker
Betty M. Welker of Lykens died Monday, June 7, 2004, at Susquehanna Lutheran Village, Millersburg.
Born in Williamstown, she was a daughter of the late Andrew and Laura Schell Garber.
Surviving are her husband, Kenneth M. Welker; a daughter, Deb Henry; two sisters, Dorothy Baddorf and Delores Nau; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were held at the convenience of the family. John R. Shultz Funeral Home, Lykens, was in charge of arrangements.
Larry J. Deeter
Larry J. Deeter, 58, of 938 Walnut St., Ashland, died Sunday, May 30, 2004, at home.
Born in Hegins, he was a son of the late Raymond and Mable Lucas Deeter. He attended Tri-Valley High School.
He was employed as a coal miner at area mines and later as a self-employed carpenter.
He was of the Protestant faith.
He was preceded in death by five brothers, John, Mark, Clarke, Leonard and Lloyd; a sister, Gladys Bloch.
Surviving are three brothers, Raymond and Earl, both of Hegins, and Clarence of Ashland; four sisters, Edna Klinger and Grace Herb, both of Valley View, Beatrice Troup of Taylorsville, and Martha Bosco of Lavelle; nieces and nephews.
Services were held Wednesday, June 2, from Richard W. Fritz Funeral Home, Ashland, with the Rev. John Clough officiating. Interment was in Christ Church Cemetery, Fountain Springs. Richard W. Fritz Funeral Home, Ashland, was in charge of arrangements.
Sara A. Deibler
Sara A. Deibler, 82, of Millersburg, died Saturday, June 5, 2004, at her residence.
Born in Mifflin Twp., she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Jennie Shaffer Deibler.
She had worked at Brubaker Tool Co. in Millersburg. She was a member of David's Church in Killinger.
Surviving are a companion, J. Franklin Crum and several cousins.
Services will be held on Wednesday, June 9, at 11 a.m. at Hoover Funeral Home in Elizabethville. Interment will be in David's Church Cemetery, Killinger. Viewings will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday and from 10 to 11 a.m. on Wednesday, at the funeral home. Hoover Funeral Home in Elizabethville, is in charge of arrangements.
Preston R. Herb
Preston Ray Herb, 64, died Friday, June 4, 2004, at Sunbury Community Hospital, Sunbury.
Born August 8, 1939, at Red Cross, he was a son of the late Edwin Lee and Ida Minerva Rebuck Herb.
He was a retired bridge painter from Keystone Painting, Pittsburgh.
He was of the Protestant faith. He was a member of the Erdman Sportsman’s Association; and the Millersburg Moose No. 59.
Surviving are his wife of 44 years, Helen Marie Billman Herb; a son, Steven D. Christman of RD Dalmatia; a daughter, Linda L. Matter of Pillow; seven sisters, Alice Wertz of Millersburg, Hilda Klinger of Lykens, Mary Bordner of Pillow, June Shade of Sacramento, Carline Faber of Halifax, Minerva Starr and Laura Knorr, both of Valley View; and three grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 9, at James A. Reed Funeral Home, Pillow, with the Rev. Timothy Doston officiating. James A. Reed Funeral Home, Pillow, was in charge of arrangements.
Robert D. Kauffman
Robert Daniel Kauffman, 78, of Hegins, died Saturday, June 5, 2004, at the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, Hershey.
Born July 24, 1925 at Hegins, he was a son of the late Jacob and Carrie Kroh Kauffman.
He was a retired self employed farmer and carpenter.
He was a member of Friedens Lutheran Church, Hegins.
He was also a member of the Woodman of the World Pitman Lodge.
He was preceded in death by two brothers William Kauffman and Charles Kauffman; and by three sisters Mae Otto, Mary Eckert, and Mildred Schovel.
Surviving are his wife of 53 years Mae K. Maurer Kauffman; four sisters Clara Ressler of Valley View, Kathryn Deardorff of Harrisburg, C. Irene Schovel of Millersburg, and Grace Hornberger; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 9, at the Buffington-Reed Funeral Home, Valley View, with the Rev. Warren Egebo officiating. A viewing will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home. Interment will be in Friedens Cemetery, Hegins.

Woodrow E. Mattern
Woodrow E. Mattern, 87 of Lykens, died Friday, June 4, 2004, at his residence.
Born July 2, 1916, in Upper Mahanoy Twp., he was a son of the late Charles F. and Sadie Snyder Mattern.
He was a retired founder and proprietor of the former Sunset View Mobile Home Park, Lykens. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Berrysburg, and Woodman of the World post No. 721.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Merle Ferster Mattern.
Surviving are a son, William Mattern of Lykens; a daughter, Carol Hassinger of Elizabethville; a brother, Dr. Paul D. Mattern of Greentown; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Services were held at his church on Monday, June 7, with the Rev. Tom Bruner officiating. Interment was in St. John's Lutheran Church Cemetery, Berrysburg.

Eileen M. Mattis
Eileen Marie Klinger Mattis, 73, of Elizabethville, died Saturday, June 5, 2004, at her home.
Born in Lykens, January 21, 1931, she was a daughter of the late Mark Carl and Alvesta Troutman Klinger. She was a 1948 graduate of Elizabethville High School.
She was a member of Miracle Revival Church, Coaldale; and the Reliance Hose Co. No. 1.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Ernest Nelson Dietrich, who died in November 1960, and her second husband, Bright Mattis, who died in 1994.
Surviving are a daughter, Millie Mae Webster of Lykens RD; a son, Mark Dietrich of Harrisburg; a sister, Francis Shomper of Elizabethville; a brother, Carl Klinger of King of Prussia; and four grandchildren.
Religious services will be held on Monday, June 21, at 1 p.m. at Miracle Revival Church, Coaldale, with the Rev. Robert Saville officiating. Interment will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Elizabethville. Visitation will be at the church from noon until time of service.

Alfonso Promenesky
Alfonso M. Promenesky, 88, of Millersburg, formerly of Williamstown, died Thursday, June 3, 2004, at Holy Spirit Hospital, Camp Hill.
Born in Mahanoy City, June 6, 1915, he was a son of the late Sylvester and Mary Promenesky.
He was retired, having been a tool and die repairman for AMP Inc., Williamstown.
He was of the Protestant faith and was a social member of American Legion Post 239, Williamstown.
Surviving are his wife, the former Helen E. Baddorf, to whom he was married 60 years; a sister, Ann Henry, Maryland; a brother, Joseph of California; nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be private. Dimon Funeral Homes Inc., Williamstown, is in charge of arrangements.
Harold S. Rehrer
Harold S. Rehrer, 84, of Pine Grove, died Wednesday, June 2, 2004, at Pottsville Hospital.
Born in Pine Grove Township, November 14, 1919, he was a son of the late Hezekiah and Emma Zimmerman Rehrer. He was a 1937 graduate of Pine Grove High School.
He was a sergeant in the Army during World War II, serving with Company B, 1282nd Engineer Combat Battalion as a construction foreman. He received the American Theater Ribbon, European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon, Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon, Philippine Liberation Ribbon and the World War II Victory Medal.
He retired as a draftsman for Bethlehem Steel Corp.
He was a member of Jacob's Lutheran Church and American Legion Post 374, both of Pine Grove, Pine Grove Grundsow Lodge and Pine Grove Area Senior Bowling League.
He was preceded in death by six brothers, John, Isaac, Paul, Clayton, Harry and Clarence; a sister, Catherine Umbenhauer.
Surviving are his wife of 63 years, the former Sara E. Shuey; two daughters, Anna Schneck and Jean Zimmerman, both of Pine Grove; three grandsons; 11 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
Services were held Saturday, June 5, from H.L. Snyder Funeral Home Inc., Pine Grove, with the Rev. Gregor Bileck officiating. Interment was in Jacob's Lutheran Cemetery, Pine Grove. H.L. Snyder Funeral Home Inc., Pine Grove, was in charge of arrangements.
Dominic C. Richard
Dominic C. “Nick” Richard, 58, of Rebuck, died Sunday, June 6, 2004, at his home.
Born in Sellersville, June 9, 1945, he was a son of Elfrieda Fritzie Angstadt Richard of Red Hill, and the late Roy Richard.
He was a retired tool and die maker from Knoll International, East Greenfield. He was a member of Grace Community Church, Herndon RD.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Dianne Adams Richard; a son, Dominic “Nick” R. Richard of Kutztown; a daughter, Tanya Richard of Boyertown; a brother, Larry Richard of Red Hill; a sister, Brenda Nicholson of Emmaus; and six grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held on Wednesday, June 9, at 1 p.m. at Grace Community Church, Herndon RD, with the Rev. Jim Banks officiating. Interment will be at County Line, Dalmatia.
